The destroyer Boadicea was torpedoed in an air raid off Portland, on June 13th, 1944. Nine officers, including Lt.Cdr. Hawkins and 166 ratings were killed and one officer wounded. (Source wrecksite.eu)

Regiment/Service: Merchant Navy, SS Samgara
Date of Death: 31/5/1945.

Merchant Navy records confirm the above and provide home address as: 89 Beith Road, Elderslie. Place of death: Bombay. Cause of death: Accidentally lost overboard from ship's motor lifeboat.

As the death was not attributable to enemy action, George Ferguson cannot be recorded on the CWGC register.

Curiously the next name on the memorial, Alexander Finlayson, is also a Merchant Navy casualty who is not on the CWGC roll due to his accidental death. He is recorded on SNWM as:

Merchant Navy records show is home address as: Royal Bank Buildings, Lennoxtown. Place of Death: Oban. Age: 17. Circumstances: Cerebral laceration (accident).

Alexander Finlayson is buried in the family grave at Woodside Cemetery, Paisley.
