W.OP. W. JEFFREY ORMISTON, R.N.
William Jeffrey Ormiston – age 17 – Boy Telegraphist (D/JX 158808) H.M.S. Glorious, Royal Navy.
William joined the navy in June 1938. In April and May 1940 the aircraft carriers “Ark Royal”, “Furious” and “Glorious” had been providing air cover to military operations in Norway. On 8 June “Glorious” and two escorting destroyers were returning to Scapa Flow when they were attacked and sunk by the German battleships “Gneisenau” and “Scharnhorst”.
Born 1922 in Selkirk. Son of James and Agnes Isabella (Richardson) Ormiston of 180 Glendinning Terrace, Galashiels.
Killed in Action/Lost at Sea on 8 June 1940 and named on the Plymouth Naval Memorial, Devon.


F.SGT. WM. N. PATERSON, R.A.F.
William Noble Paterson – age 24 – Flight Sergeant (1345502) 159 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
William was educated at Galashiels Academy and was the upper gunner on a Liberator bomber which had taken off from RAF Digri in Bengal, India on a low level daylight attack on the Bangkok to Lampang Railway but the aircraft was attacked by a Japanese fighter and crashed in the Bay of Bengal.
Born 1921 in Galashiels. Son of Andrew and Anne (Noble) Paterson of Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 6 October 1944 and named on the Singapore Memorial, Singapore.
Also named on the Galashiels Academy memorial.


MAJOR R.T. PAYNE, R.A.
Richard Tyson Payne – age 46 – Major (20453) Royal Artillery attached to 4 Field Regiment, Royal Indian Artillery.
Richard was educated at Castle Douglas Academy in Kirkcudbrightshire and from 1911 at George Watson's College in Edinburgh. Taking up engineering as a career after leaving school in 1913, he became associated with Scottish Oils and Shell Mex and was appointed superintendent of that company at Galashiels. He was a keen Territorial, was commissioned in March 1921 and held the rank of Captain in the 79th Lowland Brigade of the Royal Field Artillery. Richard died in India following an illness.
Born 1897 in Castle Douglas, Kelton, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Son of John Richard Payne (died 1929) and of Margaret Mackenzie (Crawford) Payne. Husband of Margaret May “Mysie” (Tweedie) Payne of Wilderhouse, Galashiels who he married in 1938 in Edinburgh.
Died on Active Service on 24 July 1943 and buried in Ranchi War Cemetery, India.
Also named on the George Watson's College memorial.

SGT. (A.G.) WM. PHILIP, R.A.F.
William Philip – age 21 – Sergeant/Air Gunner (1616244) 44 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
William was educated at Galashiels Academy and was a dental mechanic in Galashiels when he enlisted in March 1942. He spent four months in training in Canada. His Lancaster bomber had taken off from RAF Dunholme Lodge in Lincolnshire for a raid on the scientific research centre at Peenemunde but the aircraft crashed in the Baltic Sea. William was buried in Gross Zicker Cemetery on Ruger Island but was re-interred in Berlin in August 1948.
Born 1922 in Galashiels. Son of James and Margaret Philip of 43 St. John's Street, Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 18 August 1943 and buried in Berlin 1939-1945 War Cemetery, Germany.
Also named on the Galashiels Academy memorial.


CPL. HUGH S. PORTEOUS, R.A.F.
Hugh Stoddart Porteous – age 35 – Corporal (1104516) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Hugh had been a traveller with Messrs Peter Anderson of Bridge Mills in Galashiels before he joined up and he was a member of the RAF Police at Forres in Moray (a satellite airfield of RAF Kinloss). He died of a perforated duodenal ulcer at the Leanchoil Hospital in Forres.
Born 1909 in Galashiels. Son of the late Catherine (Paisley) Porteous (died 1940) and of John Ross Porteous of Galashiels. Husband of Janet Galbraith (Kennedy) Porteous of Wood Street, Galashiels who he married in 1940 in Edinburgh.
Died on Active Service on 11 June 1944 and buried in Galashiels (Eastlands) Cemetery. (CWG)


TEL. JAMES QUINN, R.N.
James Quinn – age 18 – Ordinary Telegraphist (P/JX 159300) H.M.S. Tamar, Royal Navy.
James was at the navy shore base, HMS Tamar, during the Japanese invasion of Hong Kong in December 1941. He died of a brain injury in the Bowen Road Military Hospital and was re-interred at Stanley in January 1946.
Born 1923 in Galashiels. Son of the late Augustine Quinn (died 1930) and Annie (Innes) Quinn of 270 Halliburton Place, Galashiels.
Died of Wounds on 4 March 1942 and buried in Stanley Military Cemetery, Hong Kong, China,
Also named on the Our Lady and St Andrew R.C. Church memorial in Galashiels.

S.SGT. GEORGE RATHIE, R.A.O.C.
George Rathie – age 45 – Staff Sergeant (7584187) 44 Divisional Ordnance Workshops, Royal Army Ordnance Corps.
George had been a mechanic with the car dealership Croall & Bryson before joining the SMT Company from where he enlisted at the outbreak of war. He was wounded during the evacuation from Dunkirk in May 1940 and was then posted to Egypt where he died.
Born 1896 in Stow, Midlothian. Son of the late Janet (Guthrie) Rathie (died 1929) and of Adam Rathie of Galashiels (former coachman at Torsonce House in Stow) Husband of Mary (Davies) Rathie of Selkirk who he married in 1923 in Edinburgh.
Died on Active Service on 29 July 1942 and buried in Heliopolis War Cemetery, Egypt.


PTE. JAMES T. RENTON, K.O.S.B.
James Tweedie Renton – age 24 – Private (3194739) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was employed at Wilderbank Mill in Galashiels when he enlisted in 1939. He was a signaller with his battalion when he was killed near Biest, south of Tilburg. James was re-interred at Bergen-op-Zoom in May 1946.
Born 1920 in Melrose, Roxburghshire as James Tweedie Rafferty. Son of Margaret (Rafferty) Renton and step-son of William Renton of 199 Galapark Road, Galashiels. William Renton, 48, of Galapark Road married Margaret Rafferty, 31, of Darnick, Melrose in 1931 in Edinburgh.
Killed in Action on 26 October 1944 and buried in Bergen-Op-Zoom War Cemetery, Netherlands.


PTE. JOHN RIGG, CAMERON HGHRS.
John Rigg – age 21 – Private (3188431) 5th Battalion, Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders.
John was employed at Buckholm Mill in Galashiels and, with his father, was a member of the Territorial 4th King's Own Scottish Borderers. They were mobilised at the outbreak of war but John was posted to the Camerons while his father Sergeant Major Rigg, who had served in WW1, was discharged from the army in September 1943. In March 1943 the 51st Highland Division was ordered to send two battalions to hold a sector of the Zigzaoug anti tank ditch on the Merath line. The 5th Camerons and 5th Seaforth found themselves pinned down in the Wadi and caught in tremendous fire. When they were withdrawn, under cover of smoke, at 0300hrs on 24 March they had suffered very heavy losses. John's remains were recovered from the battlefield and were re-interred at Sfax in April 1944.
Born 1921 in Galashiels. Son of John and Janet (Hermiston) Rigg of 20 Forest Hill, Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 23 March 1943 and buried in Sfax War Cemetery, Tunisia.

L.SGT. F. C. ROBERTSON, K.O.S.B.
Frederick Charles Robertson – age 35 – Lance Sergeant (3183608) King's Own Scottish Borderers attached to the King's African Rifles.
Frederick had enlisted in the KOSB when he was 17 and served in Egypt and in India. He was a linesman in Galashiels with the Post Office Engineering Department when he was mobilised from the Reserves in 1939. He spent some time at Berwick before being posted to the KAR but he died of appendicitis while travelling to join the Regiment.
Born c.1906 in Falkirk. (Source: Army Record but I cannot trace) Son of the late Gustav and Isabella (Robertson) Robertson. (both dead by 1932) Husband of Eleanor (Thwaites) Robertson of 82 Tweed Road, Galashiels who he married in 1932 in Edinburgh.
Died on Service on 10 January 1941 and buried in Freetown (King Tom) Cemetery, Sierra Leone.


PTE. WM. RUTHERFORD, K.O.S.B.
William Rutherford – age 18 – Private (3190259) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was an apprentice slater when he enlisted. He died from the effects of rheumatic fever in the West House Hospital in Edinburgh.
Born 1922 in Edinburgh. Son of the late John Monilaws Rutherford (died 1924) and Margaret (Davidson) Rutherford of 184 Glendinning Terrace, Galashiels.
Died on Service on 18 April 1940 and buried in Galashiels (Eastlands) Cemetery. (CWG)


L.CPL. GEO. W. SANDERSON, CAMERONIANS.
George William Sanderson – age 23 – Lance Corporal (3190759) 1st Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
George was educated at Galashiels Academy and was a member of the Gala Cycling Club. He was employed by Oliver & Sons, nurserymen of Darnick, Melrose when he enlisted in the King's Own Scottish Borderers in 1939. He joined the 1st Cameronians in India as they deployed to Burma in February 1942, serving with the Chindits in the process. George was evacuated to Sylhet in Assam, India where he died and he was re-interred at Gauhati in November 1946.
Born 1921 in Edinburgh (also registered in Galashiels) Son of George William and Winifred Conroy Sanderson, of 46 Forest Gardens, Galashiels.
Died of Wounds on 3 May 1944 and buried in Gauhati War Cemetery, Assam, India.
Also named on the Galashiels Academy memorial.

PTE. T. B. SANDERSON, PARA. REGT.
Thomas Bethune Sanderson – age 28 – Private (3194576) 3rd Battalion, The Parachute Regiment, Army Air Corps.
Thomas had served in the Black Watch in India and in the Sudan before the war and as a Reservist he was recalled in early 1940. 3 Para was formed in September 1941 from volunteers from across the Army and in November 1942 they captured the German airfield at Bone in Tunisia, the first British Army battalion level parachute operation, thereafter the battalion fought as line infantry for the rest of the campaign. Thomas was killed on his third wedding anniversary.
Born c.1915 in India. His father was a Sergeant with the 1st HLI at Ambala in India in 1914. Son of the late William Gladstone Sanderson (died 1917) and of Hannah (Hendry) Sanderson. Husband of Alison Thomson (Gray) Sanderson, of 32 Croft Street, Galashiels who he married in 1940 in Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 8 March 1943 and buried in Tabarka Ras Rajel War Cemetery, Tunisia.
His father William Gladstone Sanderson, Company Sergeant Major (7214) 10th/11th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry died on 23 April 1917.


F.SGT. V. A. SANDERSON, R.A.F.
Victor Andrew Sanderson – age 23 – Flight Sergeant/Navigator (1554662) 50 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Victor's Lancaster bomber had taken off from RAF Skellingthorpe near Lincoln for a raid on Nurnberg but the aircraft was attacked by a night-fighter and crashed at Beilstein. The crew were buried in Haiern Civilian Cemetery but were re-interred in Hanover in April 1947.
Born 1920 in Galashiels. Son of Robert and Jessie (McGirr) Sanderson of Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 31 March 1944 and buried in Hanover War Cemetery, Germany.


CAPT. HENRY SCOTT OF GALA, K.R.R.C.
Henry John Alexander Makdougall Scott Of Gala – age 39 – Major (12838) 2nd Battalion, King's Royal Rifle Corps.
Henry was educated at Eton College before attending the Royal Military College at Sandhurst from where he was commissioned in the KRRC in December 1920. He served in India in 1928 and was promoted to Captain in May 1930. He left the army in 1935 when he became Laird of Gala. Henry rejoined his regiment in September 1939 but he was killed during the defence of Calais in May 1940.
Born 1901 in Makerstoun, Roxburghshire as Scott-Makdougall. Son of the late Hugh James Elibank Scott Makdougall (died 1934) and of Agnes Harriette (Jenkinson) Scott Makdougall of Gala House, Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 26 May 1940 and buried in Calais Southern Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Eton College memorial.

FUS. T. T. SHELDRICK, R.S.F.
Thomas Teggart Sheldrick – age 36 – Fusilier (2876762) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
Thomas had joined the army as a band-boy and had landed in India when he was just 16 years old. He had served for 12 years in the Cameronians, 2 years in the Gordons and latterly with the RSF, a total of nearly 21 years. He was in France in 1940 and was evacuated from Dunkirk. Later he served in Persia and Iraq. Thomas was killed during the landings at Sicily.
Born 1908 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Son of the late Catherine Sheldrick (died 1921) and of Leonard Sheldrick of 2 Chiefswood Road, Melrose, Roxburghshire who married Janet McLaren in 1929 in Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 10 July 1943 and buried in Syracuse War Cemetery, Sicily, Italy.


F.SGT. J. H. SHERIDAN, R.A.F.
James Harvey Sheridan – age 35 – Flight Sergeant/Air Bomber (1563203) 102 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
James was educated at Galashiels Academy and was a draftsman with an iron-founders in Galashiels. He was killed when his Halifax bomber, which had completed a raid on Dortmund, crash-landed short of the runway on its return to RAF Pocklington in Yorkshire. The other crew members were injured but survived.
Born 1909 in Galashiels. Son of Michael and Georgina (Harvey) Sheridan of Scott Street, Galashiels. Husband of Margaret Moyes (Heatlie) Sheridan of 97 Tweed Road, Galashiels who he married in 1932 in Galashiels.
Died on Active Service on 1 January 1945 and buried in Galashiels (Eastlands) Cemetery. (CWG)
Also named on the Galashiels Academy memorial.


L.CPL. J. W. SIMPSON, D.L.I.
John Warwick Simpson – age 21 – Lance Corporal (3190669) 8th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry.
The 8th DLI were part of the BEF sent to France in 1939 and withstood the onslaught of the German Blitzkrieg in May 1940, taking part in the British counter-strike at Arras before the retreat to Dunkirk.
Born 1918 in Galashiels. Son of Walter Rollo Simpson and Grace (Maclachlan) Simpson of Meigle Street, Galashiels and of Blyth Bridge, West Linton, Peeblesshire who had married in 1916 in Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 22 May 1940 and named on the Dunkirk Memorial, France.
Also named on the Galashiels Academy memorial.

F.O. DEREK L. SKINNER, D.F.C. R.A.F.
Derek Lahee Skinner, Distinguished Flying Cross – age 20 – Flying Officer (42655) 148 Squadron, Royal Air Force.
Derek was educated at Lindisfarne College, Westcliff-on-Sea in Essex before gaining a commission with the RAF on 2 September 1939. After carrying out a large number of night bombing operations over Europe he was awarded a DFC as Pilot Officer Derek Lahee Skinner (42655), No. 44 Squadron and was promoted in April 1941. He was just 19 years old. For a few months he ferried aircraft across Africa before volunteering for operational duties again and he was posted to Egypt to join 148 Squadron. On his second mission he was piloting a Wellington bomber for a raid on Derna in Libya but the aircraft did not return.
Born 1921 in Edmonton, London. Son of Ernest Henry James Skinner (HM Inspector of Taxes, Galashiels) and Hilda Maude (Lahee) Skinner of Woodburn, Mossilee Road, Galashiels and of Beckenham, Kent.
Missing in Action on 10 December 1941 and named on the Alamein Memorial, Egypt.
Also named on the Lindisfarne College War Memorial.


C.P.O. J. SMAIL, O.B.E. R.N.
James Smail – age 38 – Chief Petty Officer (D/J 85547) H.M.S. Hunter, Royal Navy.
James was awarded the Medal of the Military Division of the Order of the British Empire for gallantry during the rescue of casualties when the destroyer “Hunter” hit a mine off the Spanish coast near Almeria on 13 May 1937 while enforcing the arms blockade during the Spanish Civil War. In 1940 at Narvik in Norway “Hunter” as part of the 2nd Destroyer Flotilla together with HMS Hardy, HMS Havock, HMS Hostile and HMS Hotspur carried out a successful attack on German destroyers. Two were sunk along with several merchant ships. On withdrawing to sea the flotilla met further German destroyers and in a brief action “Hunter” was sunk.
Born 1901 in Galashiels. Son of the late Mary (Crozier) Smail (died 1906) and of Alexander Smail of 13 Livingstone Place, Galashiels. Husband of Jane Forsyth (Morrison) Smail of 26 Peddie Street, Dundee who he married in 1930 in Dundee.
Killed in Action/Lost at Sea on 23 April 1940 and named on the Plymouth Naval Memorial, Devon.
Also named on the Dundee WW2 Roll of Honour.

Robert Drummond Small – age 18 – Private (14514487) 2nd Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
Robin was educated at Galashiels Academy and assisted his father as a greenkeeper at Ladhope Golf Course before he enlisted in April 1943. The battalion landed at Normandy on D-Day+1, 7 June 1944. Robert was killed near Tilly La Campagne and was re-interred at Banneville in August 1945.
Born 1925 in Largo, Fife. Son of Robert and Jessie Catherine Dowie (Wilson) Small of Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 8 August 1944 and buried in Banneville-La-Campagne War Cemetery, Calvados, France.
Also named on the Galashiels Academy memorial.


P.O. IAN O. M. SMITH, R.A.F.
Ian Ogg Mackenzie Smith – age 23 – Pilot Officer (87038) 99 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Ian was educated at Galashiels Academy and was commission from Leading Aircraftman (967461) in October 1940. His Wellington bomber had taken off from RAF Waterbeach near Cambridge for a raid on Berlin but was lost without trace over the North Sea.
Born 1917 in Barnet, London. Son of John Dugald Smith and Mary Helen (Ogg) Smith of Morven, Galashiels. Husband of Mary Florence (McGowan) Smith who he married on 3 March 1941 in Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 9 May 1941 and named on the Runnymede Memorial, Surrey.
Also named on the Galashiels Academy memorial and on the Galashiels East Church memorial.


RFN. T. B. SMITH, CAMERONIANS (S.R.)
Thomas Bell Smith – age 36 – Rifleman (14595707) 2nd Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
Thomas was a joiner in Galashiels when he enlisted. His battalion was amongst the first assaulting forces to set foot in Italy on the 3rd September 1943. The battalion was then sent to help following the allied landings at Anzio in January 1944.
Born 1907 in Galashiels. Son of the late James and Wilhelmina Swan (Bell) Smith formerly of 172 Croft Street, Galashiels. Husband of Janet Baillie (Tait) Smith of 36 Huddersfield Street, Galashiels who he married in 1936 in Selkirk.
Killed in Action on 16 March 1944 and buried in Beach Head War Cemetery, Anzio, Italy.

CAPT. IAN L. SPALDING, F.F. REGT. I.A.
Ian Lindsay Spalding – age 26 – Captain (EC/1180) 3rd Royal Battalion, 12th Frontier Force Regiment, India Army.
Ian was educated at Galashiels Academy and was commissioned in the Indian Army in August 1940. The 3/12th FFR fought in the East African and Western Desert Campaigns where it was all but destroyed at El Adem on 15 June 1942. It was reformed in Egypt in October 1943 and served in Tunisia and Italy.
Born 1917 in Galashiels. Son of the late William Spalding (died 1939) and of the late Elizabeth Young (Lindsay) Spalding (died 1937) of Galashiels and of Annan, Dumfriesshire. Grandson of Elizabeth Hall Lindsay and brother of Elizabeth Jean Spalding of Lawyers Brae, Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 26 May 1944 and buried in Sangro River War Cemetery, Italy.
Also named on the Galashiels Academy memorial and on the Galashiels Old Church memorial.


L.CPL. J. STALKER, A.& S. HGHRS.
James Stalker – age 20 – Lance Corporal (14273277) 8th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Jim was educated at Galashiels Academy and was employed in the office at Comly Bank Mill in Galashiels when he enlisted in 1942. The 8th Battalion fought in Tunisia, Sicily and all the way up Italy. Jim was killed in the Adriatic sector, south east of Bologna.
Born 1924 in Galashiels. Son of Walter Haldane Stalker and of Ann Georgina Stewart (Henderson) Stalker of 172 Magdala Terrace, Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 22 October 1944 and buried in Faenza War Cemetery, Italy.
Also named on the Galashiels Academy memorial.

David Thomson Stanners – age 21 – Sergeant/Wireless Operator/Air Gunner (1065713) Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
David was educated at Galashiels Academy and had studied at the Technical College in Galashiels before being employed in the pattern department at Buckholm Mill. He was a member of the Gala Harriers when he joined the RAF in 1940. David's Wellington bomber of 15 Operational Training Unit had taken off from RAF Harwell in Oxfordshire in support of a raid on Bremen but the aircraft was hit by ground fire and crashed off the Dutch coast. David's body was washed up at Hallum in Friesland in July 1942.
Born 1921 in Kinross. Son of John and Annie (Graham) Stanners of 52 Glendinning Terrace, Galashiels who had married in 1905 in Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 25 June 1942 and buried in Ferwerderadeel (Hallum) Protestant Churchyard, Netherlands.
Also named on the Galashiels Academy memorial.


LT. J. McD. SUTHERLAND, CAM. HGHRS.
John McDonald Sutherland – age 23 – Lieutenant (330218) Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders.
John was educated at Galashiels Academy, and at the College of Art at the Heriot-Watt College in Edinburgh. He studied building construction at the Technical College in Galashiels and served his apprenticeship with the family company of Messrs G. Sutherland & Sons, Sculptors of Galashiels. He was commissioned from Cadet (2382677) in September 1944. John was killed near Speldorf in Germany after the Allies had crossed the Rhine and he was re-interred in Reichswald in October 1946.
Born 1921 in Galashiels. Son of David and of Lily Stewart (Dow) Sutherland of 7 Paton Street, Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 28 March 1945 and buried in Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Germany.
Also named on the Galashiels Academy memorial.
The “Angel of Peace” above the WW1 name plaque on the Galashiels War Memorial was sculpted by his father David Sutherland.
His uncle, George McDonald Sutherland, Second Lieutenant, 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers, was killed on 9 April 1917.



CPL. JAMES G. SWAN, R.A.S.C.
James Guthrie Swan – age 28 – Corporal (T/64679) 12 Company, Royal Army Service Corps.
James was educated at Galashiels Academy and was serving in Hong Kong when Japanese forces began their attack on 8 December 1941. The colony surrendered on Christmas Day.
Born 1913 in Galashiels. Son of James Swan and of Isabella Guthrie. Adopted son of Mrs Jane Ann (Smart) Neilson of 3 Bridge Street, Galashiels.
Missing in Action between 8 and 25 December 1941 and named on the Sai Wan Memorial, Hong Kong, China.
Also named on the Galashiels Academy memorial.

CPL. PETER TAIT, A.& S. HGHRS.
I cannot directly link this man to Galashiels but he is thought to be:
Peter Tait – age 20 – Corporal (14363551) 2nd Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Peter was killed near Vynen in Germany during the Rhine crossing and was re-interred at Reichswald in October 1946.
Born c.1925 in Edinburgh. (Source: SNWM but I cannot trace) Son of ????
Killed in Action on 24 March 1945 and buried in Reichswald Forest War Cemetery Germany.
Also named on the Galashiels Old Church memorial.


DR. WM. D. TAIT, R.A.S.C.
William Dalling Tait – age 27 – Private (T/1 3185322) Royal Army Service Corps.
William died in Richmond, Surrey.
Born 1913 in Colinton, Edinburgh. Son of William and Agnes (Johnston) Tait. Husband of Margaret Robson (Neilson) Tait who he married in 1938 in Galashiels.
Died on Service on 20 March 1941 and buried in Galashiels (Eastlands) Cemetery. (CWG)


TPR. WM. J. TELFORD, L.& B.H.
William John Telford – age 26 – Trooper (106125) "B" Squadron, 2nd Lothians and Border Horse, Royal Armoured Corps.
William was employed by Adam Purves & Son, motor engineers in Galashiels, and was a viola player in a local orchestra when he enlisted in 1939. He was evacuated from Dunkirk and in late 1942 he was posted to Egypt where he served from El Alamein through to Sicily and into Italy.
Born 1917 in Kirkton, Roxburghshire. Son of the late Thomas Telford (died 1936) and of Devina (Irving) Telford of 129 Scott Street, Galashiels. Husband of Vera (Yardley) Telford of Hull who he married in 1941 in Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 28 August 1944 and buried in Florence War Cemetery, Italy.
Also named on the Galashiels East Church memorial.

David James Boyd Thomson – age 23 – Private (3193075) 5th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
David was educated at the Academy and at the Technical College in Galashiels and he was employed as a designer in Selkirk when he enlisted in January 1940. He and another Borderer were fatally wounded at St Margaret's, Dunbar, East Lothian while on coastal defence duties.
Born 1917 in Galashiels. Son of James Boyd Thomson and Isabella Robertson (Cossar) Thomson of 17 Stanley Street, Galashiels.
Died on Active Service on 31 December 1940 and buried in Galashiels (Eastlands) Cemetery.
Also named on the Galashiels Academy memorial and on the Galashiels Old Church memorial.


F.O. ARTHUR I. TOMLINSON, R.A.F.
Arthur Ian Tomlinson – age 22 – Flying Officer/Navigator (165616) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Arthur was educated at Galashiels Academy, was a promising rugby player with the Gala 1st XV and was employed by the National Bank of Scotland. He was commissioned from Leading Aircraftman (1568958) in June 1944. His Liberator bomber of 111 (Coastal) Operation Training Unit had taken off from Windsor Field on Nassau in the Bahamas for a training flight but it collided with another Liberator and crashed near the airfield. The second aircraft managed to land but Arthur and his crewmates were killed.
Born 1922 in Newington, Edinburgh. Son of John and Margaret (Harkness) Tomlinson of 72 Thistle Street, Galashiels.
Died on Active Service on 23 February 1945 and buried in Nassau War Cemetery, Bahamas.
Also named on the Galashiels Academy memorial and on the National Bank of Scotland memorial now in RBS Headquarters, Gogarburn.


FUS. MARK I. TURNER, R.S.F.
Mark Ian Turner – age 30 – Fusilier (3135666) 11th Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
Ian was employed in the finishing department of Wilderbank Mill in Galashiels when he enlisted in 1940. The 11th RSF had landed at Normandy on 11 June 1944. Ian was fatally wounded during the attack on Fontenay-Le-Pesnel and he died at Martragny but was re-interred in Bayeux in April 1945.
Born 1914 in Inveresk & Musselburgh, Midlothian. Son of the late John Fairbairn Turner (died 1918) and of Agnes (Douglas) Turner. Husband of Catherine Scott (Donaldson) Turner of 199 Galapark Road, Galashiels who he married in 1940 in Galashiels.
Died of Wounds on 20 June 1944 and buried in Bayeux War Cemetery, Calvados, France.

P.O. JOHN B. TWEEDIE, R.A.F.
John Burns Tweedie – age 34 – Pilot Officer/Flight Engineer (175327) 115 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
John was educated at Galashiels Academy and was commissioned from Sergeant (1890840) on 10 April 1944. His Lancaster bomber had taken off from RAF Witchford near Ely, Cambridgeshire for a raid on Dusseldorf but the aircraft was hit by ground fire and crashed in the target area. The crew were buried in Dusseldorf North Cemetery but were re-interred in October 1946.
Born 1909 in Caddonfoot, Selkirkshire. Son of James and Janet Tait (Burns) Tweedie of Galashiels. Husband of Dorothy Ethel (Newbery or Parker) Tweedie of Kensington, London who he married in April 1944 in Ely.
Killed in Action on 23 April 1944 and buried in Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Germany.
Also named on the Galashiels Academy memorial.


MAJOR IAN D. C. VEITCH, R.A.M.C.
Ian Donald Cruickshank Veitch, M.B., Ch.B. (Edin.) – age 38 – Major (246179) Royal Army Medical Corps
Ian was educated at George Watson's College in Edinburgh before studying medicine at Edinburgh University from where he graduated in 1930. He became a G.P. in Galashiels and, as a keen athlete, he was appointed President of the Gala Harriers Club. He was commission in the RAMC in September 1942 and was posted to the 9th India Infantry Brigade. After serving in the Burma campaign in 1944 he was appointed Deputy Assistant Director of Medical Services at Bangalore, where he remained until he was invalided home in December 1945. Ian died in the military hospital in Edinburgh Castle.
Born 1907 in Currie, Midlothian. Son of John Veitch (died 1931) and Jessie (Cruickshank) Veitch of Dunnbrae, Lanark Road, Currie, Midlothian. Husband of Elizabeth Isabella (Smith) Veitch of 12 Sime Place, Galashiels and of Edinburgh who he married in 1935 in Aberdeen.
Died on Service on 4 March 1946 and buried in Currie Parish Churchyard, Midlothian. (CWG)
Also named on the Currie Parish War Memorial, on the Currie Church memorial and on the George Watson's College memorial.

RAD.OFF. I. R. H. WADDELL, M.N.
Ian Robert Hendry Waddell – age 20 – Second Radio Officer, M.V. Narragansett (London) Merchant Navy.
Ian was educated at Galashiels Academy before becoming a Radio Officer. The tanker “Narragansett” was sailing unescorted from Port Arthur in Texas to Halifax, Nova Scotia with a cargo of petroleum when she was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-105 off the coast of Virginia, USA.
Born 1921 in Galashiels. Son of Robert Hall Waddell and Margaret (Hendry) Waddell of 12 Abbotsford Road, Galashiels.
Killed by Enemy Action/ Lost at Sea on 25 March 1942 and named on the Tower Hill Memorial, London.
Also named on the Galashiels Academy memorial and on the Galashiels Old Church memorial.


SGT. JOSEPH WATSON, S. GUARDS.
Joseph Watson – age 23 – Sergeant (3188696) 2nd Battalion, Scots Guards.
Joseph joined the Scots Guards in 1937 and had been in Egypt for four years when he was taken prisoner in Libya in June 1942. He died in the Prisoner of War hospital at Caserta north of Naples.
Born 1920 in Galashiels. Son of William and Elizabeth Watson of 5 Duke Street, Galashiels.
Died on Service on 31 December 1942 and buried in Caserta War Cemetery, Italy.


LT. FARQUHAR WEBSTER, K.O.S.B.
Farquhar Webster – age 23 – Lieutenant (304350) King's Own Scottish Borderers attached to the 6th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
Farquhar was commissioned in the KOSB from Cadet (3190688) in January 1944. The 6th Black Watch took part in the Italian Campaign, moving to Naples in February 1944 and saw further action at the Fourth Battle of Monte Cassino. By October 1944 the 4th Division was taking part in the British Eighth Army's battle on the Gothic Line. Farquhar was killed near Calisese and was buried in the 4th Division Cemetery there but he was re-interred in Cesena in April 1945.
Born 1921 in Galashiels. Son of the late Mary Ann (Jackson) Webster (died 1940) and of Farquhar Webster of Buckholm Mill Cottages, Galashiels. Husband of Jean Lauchlan (Mitchell) Webster of Guildyden, Monikie, Angus who he married in April 1944 in Monikie. His son was born in January 1945.
Killed in Action on 19 October 1944 and buried in Cesena War Cemetery, Italy.

Andrew Moffat Whyte – age 32 – Engine Room Artificer 4th Class (D/MX 60091) H.M. Submarine Perseus, Royal Navy.
Andrew had served his apprenticeship as an engineer with Aimers, McLean & Co. in Galashiels. He had joined the navy in 1921 and had been in the Near East for two years when the “Perseus” sailed from Malta to patrol in the Ionian Sea. Off the coast of the island of Cephalonia she struck an Italian mine and sank.
Born 1909 in Waterford, Ireland. Son of Andrew and Nellie (Caldwell) Whyte of Abbotsford Ferry, Galashiels. Husband of Ivy Dinah (Little) Whyte of Bury, Lancashire who he married in 1935 in Bury.
Died on Active Service/Lost at Sea on 19 December 1941 and named on the Plymouth Naval Memorial, Devon.


GNR. THOMAS WILLIAMSON, R.A.
Thomas Williamson – age 19 – Gunner (14554904) 138 Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Royal Artillery.
Thomas was a tweed pattern weaver. He died of a brain tumour in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.
Born 1925 in Galashiels as Thomas Beattie. Son of Thomas John Williamson and Elizabeth (Beattie) Williamson of 51 Stirling Street, Galashiels who married in 1926 in Edinburgh.
Died on Service on 5 February 1944 and buried in Galashiels (Eastlands) Cemetery. (CWG)


A.SGT. CHAS. WOOD, K.O.S.B.
Charles Wood – age 25 – Corporal (3192789) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Charles was employed at the Lindean Mill in Galashiels and was a member of the Gala Harriers. The 6th KOSB landed on the Normandy beaches on 15 June 1944 and took part in the battles around Caen and the River Odon. Charles was killed near La Ferriere au Doyen and was re-interred in Tilly-sur-Seulles in April 1946.
Born 1919 in Edinburgh. Son of Georgina Wood of Station House, Lindean, Galashiels. Husband of Margaret Ann Sim (Lockie) Wood of 18 Roxburgh Place, Galashiels who he married in December 1941 in Galashiels while he was serving in the 6th KOSB.
Killed in Action on 1 August 1944 and buried in Tilly-Sur-Seulles War Cemetery, Calvados, France.
Also named on the Galashiels Old Church memorial.
