Lt. Col. James Clark, CB KC, Deputy Lieutenant of the City and chairman of Edinburgh's King's Park School board was 55 years old in 1914, but he went off to France to command the 9th Battalion of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. In May 1915, the School Board received the sad news that he had been killed in action, and at a special meeting it was decided to honour his memory by changing the name of the school to James Clark School.

The School closed in 1972 and in the seventies and early eighties was used as temporary accommodation for other schools, and by Telford College. It has now been converted to housing.
