LT. WALTER J. MURRAY. Canada
Walter James Murray – age 34 – Lieutenant, 42nd Battalion (Royal Highlanders of Canada) Canadian Infantry.
Walter had served his apprenticeship as an architect in Galashiels before emigrating to Canada. He became a partner in the practice of Peden & McLaren at Beaver Hall Hill, Montreal in Quebec and, with Frank Peden, designed several of the Loyola College buildings in Montreal. He had previously served in the Border Rifles and he was granted a commissioned in the 55th Irish Canadian Rangers in Montreal in March 1916. He sailed with the 199th Overseas Battalion in December 1916. The Battalion spent some time in Ireland and England before being broken up and used to reinforce other units. Walter was posted to the 42nd Battalion in France in November 1917 but was injured and evacuated back to England. He rejoined his battalion in January 1918 and was attached to the 7th Canadian Light Trench Mortar Battery. He was wounded and evacuated to the Manor War Hospital in Epsom, Surrey where he died.
Born 1884 in Galashiels. Son of Walter Murray (formerly Water Officer for Galashiels Burgh) and Elizabeth (Wilkinson) Murray of 388 Morningside Road, Edinburgh.
Died of Wounds on 7 October 1918 and buried in Galashiels (Eastlands) Cemetery. (CWG)


PTE. WILLIAM MURRAY. King's Own Scottish Borderers
William Murray – age 31 – Private (27640) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was posted to the 7th/8th KOSB before being transferred to the 1st Battalion.
Born 1886 in Galashiels. Son of Francis and Isabella (Cornish) Murray of 12 Balmoral Place, Galashiels. Husband of Margaret Jane (Knox) Murray of 31 Stanley Street, Galashiels who he married in 1915 in Edinburgh.
Missing in Action on 16 August 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.

PTE. JOSEPH McARDLE. Highland Light Infantry
Note: Most civil records have McCardle.
Joseph McArdle – age 34 – Private (6769) 1st Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
Joseph had been a pre-war regular soldier and played football for Gala Hailles Villa. He re-enlisted at the outbreak of war and joined his battalion in France in March 1915 but he was fatally wounded a month later. Joseph was buried in Winchester Post Military Cemetery, Rue-Du-Bacquerot, Laventie but was re-interred at Aubers in the 1920's,
Born 1880 in Cranston, Midlothian as McCardle. Son of the late John and Margaret McCardle. Husband of Jessie Newlands McArdle of 72 Overhaugh Street, Galashiels who he married in 1905 in Galashiels as McCardle.
Died of Wounds on 5 April 1915 and buried in Aubers Ridge British Cemetery, Aubers, France.
Also named on the Our Lady and St Andrew R.C. Church memorial in Galashiels.


LT. JAMES McCONNELL. Australia
James McConnell – age 48 – Lieutenant, 3rd Australian Pioneer Battalion.
James was an engineering manager when he enlisted in Melbourne in June 1915. He had previously spent 7 years in the Royal Scots. He was posted as Sergeant (1) to the 10th Battalion and promoted to CSM in December before transferring to the Pioneers as RSM in March 1916. He sailed from Melbourne in June and landed in France in November 1916. He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant in February 1917 and to Lieutenant in September. James had been wounded in June 1917 and was evacuated to hospital in Leeds before returning to France in September but he was seconded for duty with a Training Battalion and Pioneer School in England and it was May 1918 before he rejoined the 3rd Pioneers in France.
Born 1871 in Galashiels. Son of the late John and Martha Crichton (Hempseed) McConnell, formerly of Galashiels. Husband of Jeannie (Nixon) McConnell, of "Belmore" 20 Boronia Street, Canterbury, Victoria, Australia who he married in 1894 in Queensland.
Killed in Action on 22 August 1918 and buried in Beacon Cemetery, Sailly-Laurette, Somme, France.


PTE. ROBERT H. McCRIRRICK. Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders
Robert Henderson McCrirrick – age 30 – Private (S/11034) 2nd Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Robert joined his battalion in France in October 1915.
Born 1887 in Galashiels. Son of the late Thomas McCrirrick (died 1906) of Elm Row, Church Bank and of Helen Ann (Henderson) McCrirrick of Euchan, Galashiels,
Killed in Action on 18 August 1916 and buried in Caterpillar Valley Cemetery, Longueval, Somme, France.

PTE. CUMMING McCULLOCH. King's Own Scottish Borderers
Cumming McCulloch – age 18 – Private (6610) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Cumming was an apprentice at Wheatland Mill in Galashiels when he enlisted in the Territorial 4th KOSB in November 1913. He was mobilised in August 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1897 in Hawick, Roxburghshire. Son of James and Isabella (Grant) McCulloch of 10 Stanley Street, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.


PTE. D. McCULLOCH. Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders

C.Q.M.S. DONALD MACDONALD. King's Own Scottish Borderers
Donald MacDonald – age 27 – Company Quartermaster Sergeant (201022) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Donald was a railway clerk when he enlisted in Galashiels and he became the CQMS of the 3/4th Battalion. He joined the 1/4th battalion in Egypt and served in Palestine where he was fatally wounded. He died in the 66th Casualty Clearing Station at Deir el Belah.
Born 1890 in Inverness. Son of the late Ronald Macdonald and of Mary (Cameron) Macdonald of 46 Telford Road, Inverness. Husband of Margaret (Weatherston) Macdonald of 112 Scott Street, Galashiels who he married in 1916 in Edinburgh.
His son Donald George John Angus Macdonald was born in March 1918 in Galashiels.
Died of Wounds on 30 October 1917 and buried in Deir El Belah War Cemetery, Palestine.
Also named on the Inverness Burgh War Memorial.

L-CPL. ANDREW McDOUGALL. King's Own Scottish Borderers
Andrew McDougall – age 33 – Lance Sergeant (34890) 9th Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment.
Andrew enlisted in Edinburgh in July 1909 and was posted to the 2nd KOSB as Private (10453). He joined the 2nd KOSB in India in January 1911. The battalion returned to England December 1914 and then sailed again landing at Gallipoli in April 1915. They moved to France in March 1916 and Andrew was wounded on the first day of the battle of the Somme on 1 July 1916 and after he had recovered he was posted to the 9th Y&L Regiment.
Born 1883 in Galashiels. [Ladhope] as Andrew McDougal. Son of the late William McDougal and of Mary (Hunter) McDougal formerly of Galashiels and of 57 Carlton Road, Edinburgh.
Missing in Action on 1 October 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.


CPL. THOMAS McDOUGALL. King's Own Scottish Borderers
Thomas McDougall – age 28 – Private (12058) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Thomas lived in Galabank Street, Galashiels and was a barman at the Ladhope Inn when he enlisted. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in May 1915 but he was killed four months later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1887 in Galashiels. Son of the late Margaret (Robson) McDougall (died 1899) and of the late Thomas McDougall (died 1908) formerly of Croft Street, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.


CAPT. HARRY McGHEE. Scottish Rifles
Harry McGhee – age 35 – Captain, 11th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
Harry served his apprenticeship as a draper in Galashiels, and was employed in Glasgow and in London. At the outbreak of war he was a representative of a firm in Shanghai and he came home and received a commission in the Scottish Rifles in February 1915. He was promoted to temporary Captain in the 11th Battalion in May. The battalion landed at Boulogne in September but sailed for Salonika in northern Greece in November 1915.
Born December 1881 in Galashiels as Henry. Son of the late John McGhee (died 1898) and of Mary (Crosbie) McGhee of 200 Magdala Terrace, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 8 May 1917 and named on the Doiran Memorial, Greece.

John McGhee – age 25 – Private (200392) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB and as Private (6512) he was mobilised in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 and later served in Egypt and Palestine.
Born 1892 in Galashiels. Son of John and Elizabeth (Jeffrey) McGhee of 31 Stanley Street, Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 28 November 1917 and buried in Ramleh War Cemetery, Israel.


PTE. HUGH McGUIRE. Royal Scots
Hugh Maguire – age 29 – Private (2457) 1/5th Battalion (Queen's Edinburgh Rifles) Royal Scots.
Hugh was employed as a shunter at Joppa near Edinburgh by the North British Railway Company when he enlisted in September 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915 but was killed a week later.
Born 1886 in Galashiels. Son of the late Margaret (Tait) Maguire (died 1886) of Galashiels and of James Maguire of 1 New Broughton and of 45 Albany Street, Edinburgh. Husband of Jane (Finlay) Maguire of 4 New Broughton, Edinburgh who he married in 1908 in Edinburgh.
Missing in Action on 2 May 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the North British Railway Company Memorial in Waverley Station, Edinburgh.

James Maguire – age 35 – Private (3366) 2nd Battalion, Scots Guards.
James was living at North High Street in Musselburgh near Edinburgh and was employed by the North British Railway Company as a wagon checker. He was a reservist and he joined the 1st Scots Guards in France in September 1914 before transferring to the 2nd Battalion. He was killed by a sniper while he was repairing a telegraph wire and he was buried in Winchester Post Military Cemetery, Rue-Du-Bacquerot, Laventie but was re-interred at Aubers in the 1920's,
Born 1879 in Galashiels. Son of the late Margaret (Tait) Maguire (died 1886) of Galashiels and of James Maguire of 1 New Broughton and of 45 Albany Street, Edinburgh. Husband of Margaret Clark (Baxter) Maguire who he married in 1908 in Edinburgh.

John McIntosh – age 28 – Private (6913) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John enlisted in the KOSB Reserve in Edinburgh in August 1914 and was posted to the 2nd KOSB in France in March 1915. He was wounded in August 1916 and after treatment in the 1st South African General Hospital in Abbeville he was evacuated to the Edinburgh War Hospital at Bangour, West Lothian in September but he died there a few days later.
Born 1888 Galashiels [Ladhope] as John Crozier McIntosh. Son of the late Alexander and Margaret McIntosh formerly of Stirling Street, Galashiels. Husband of Isabella (Hunter) McIntosh of 55 South Mary's Street, Edinburgh who he married in 1911 in Jedburgh, Roxburghshire.
Died of Wounds on 8 September 1916 and buried in Galashiels (Eastlands) Cemetery. (CWG)

William George MacKay – age 19 – Lance Corporal (59448) 11th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Born 1899 in Galashiels. Son of Simon and Agnes (Hogarth) MacKay of 66 King Street, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 25 April 1918 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.


A.B. DOUGLAS A. MACLAGAN. Royal Navy
Douglas Alexander Maclagan – age 31 – Able Seaman (219820) H.M.S. Invincible, Royal Navy.
In 1901 Douglas was living with his family at 195 Galapark Road, Galashiels and was working as a Telegraphic Messenger. He enlisted in the navy in December 1902 and joined the battle-cruiser “Invincible” in November 1914. She was destroyed by a magazine explosion during the battle of Jutland after the armour of one of her gun turrets was penetrated by shell from the German ships.
Born December 1884 in Partick, Glasgow. Son of Alexander and Emily (Lumsden) Maclagan of 71 Albert Place and of 44 Island Street, Galashiels.
Missing in Action/Lost at Sea on 31 May 1916 and named on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire.

John McLaren – age 25 – Private (204536) 1st Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
John was posted as Private (201357) to the 1st King's Own Scottish Borderers in France but was transferred to the 1st RSF.
Born 1892 in Galashiels. Son of John and Janet (Ramsay or Reid) McLaren of Woodside Place, Galashiels.

Daniel McLaughlin – age 36 – Private (202713) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Dan was in business as a hairdresser in Channel Street, Galashiels when he enlisted.
Born 1882 in Galashiels. Son of Michael and Catherine (Candlin) McLaughin of Galashiels. Husband of Catherine (McWiggan) McLaughlin of Island Street, Galashiels who he married in 1912 in Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 11 April 1918 and named on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Our Lady and St Andrew R.C. Church memorial in Galashiels.


PTE. D. B. McLENNAN. Scots Guards
Note: All military records show the name as David Bain McLennan.
David Bain MacLennan – age 27 – Private (6657) 1st Battalion, Scots Guards.
David was a farm servant when he enlisted in November 1906. He transferred to the Army Reserve 5 years later and joined the River Tweed Police as a water bailiff before he married and became a policeman with the Northumberland Constabulary in March 1914. As a reservist he was mobilised in August 1914 and he landed with his battalion at Le Havre in August, one of the first British formations to move to France, but he was killed a month later at the River Aisne near Vendresse.
Born 1887 in Avoch, Ross-shire as David Bain McLEMAN.
Son of Alexander McLeman and Catherine (McLennan) McLeman, of Rosehaugh, Avoch, Ross-shire who married there in 1871. Husband of Elizabeth Sim (Millar) MacLennan of Boldside Fishing Lodge, Galashiels who he married in March 1914 in Galashiels as David Bain MacLennan.
Missing in Action on 14 September 1914 and named on the La Ferte-Sous-Jouarre Memorial, Seine-et-Marne, France.
Also named on the Avoch Parish War Memorial as as Cpl. D. B. MacLeman and on the Northumberland County Constabulary War Memorial as L/Cpl. D. B. MacLennan.

Robert McRae – age 24 – Private (S/9033) 8th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
Robert joined his battalion in France in October 1915.
Born 1892 in Galashiels. Son of Alexander and Mary (Storie) McRae of 103 High Buckholmside, Galashiels.
Died of Wounds on 1 July 1916 and buried in Calais Southern Cemetery, France.

Born 1895 in Galashiels. Son of Alexander and Mary (Storie) McRae of 103 High Buckholmside, Galashiels.
Died of Wounds on 3 November 1918 and buried in Rocquigny-Equancourt Road British Cemetery, Manancourt, France.


PTE. FRANK McTAVISH. King's Own Scottish Borderers
Frank McTavish – age 29 – Private (6802) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
In 1901 Frank, aged 15, was a woodman at Cavers, Roxburghshire and was a forester when he enlisted in Galashiels in September 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1886 in Fogo, Berwickshire as Francis. Son of John and Margaret (Lillie) McTavish of Manse Cottage, Cavers.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Cavers and Kirkton Parishes War Memorial and on the Hawick Roll of Honour.

PTE. THOMAS NEIL. Highland Light Infantry
Note: Military records have Neill.
Thomas Neill – age 38 – Private (5620) 2nd Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
Almost certainly a reservist, Thomas joined his battalion in September 1914 just a month after they had arrived in France. He was killed at Neuve Chapelle.
Born 1877 in Peebles as Thomas Edgar Neil. Son of the late Elizabeth Purdie Neil (died 1902) of Langhaugh Mains Farm House, Galashiels and of Robert Neil of Rink Cottages, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 17 May 1915 and named on the Le Touret Memorial, France.


PTE. JAMES C. NEWLANDS. Highland Light Infantry
James Cornish Newlands – age 22 – Private (281991) 1/9th (Glasgow Highland) Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
James died in the 4th General Hospital in Camiers.
Born 1897 in Galashiels. Son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Cornish) Newlands of 14 Balmoral Place, Galashiels. Husband of Elizabeth Mary (McFairbairn) Newlands of 313 Galapark Road, Galashiels who he married in 1918 in Edinburgh.
Died of Wounds on 20 April 1918. and buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, France.


L-CPL. WILLIAM NEWLANDS. Gordons
William Newlands – age 23 – Lance Corporal (S/6856) 9th Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
William had served his apprenticeship as a painter in Galashiels when he enlisted in November 1914. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915 and he was promoted to L/Cpl. in December 1916 but he was wounded at the end of July 1917 and died in the 32nd Casualty Clearing Station at Brandhoek on the following day.
Born 1894 in Galashiels. Son of John and Mary (Taylor) Newlands of 88 High Buckholmside and of 260 Haliburton Place, Galashiels.
Died of Wounds on 1 August 1917 and buried in Brandhoek New Military Cemetery, Belgium.

George Tait Nixon – age 20 – Private (40422) 13th Battalion, Royal Scots.
George was a chef at the Caledonian Hotel in Edinburgh when he enlisted.
Born 1898 in Galashiels. Son of Thomas and Mary (Tait) Nixon of 4 Goslaw Green, Selkirk and of 49 Lintburn Street, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 28 March 1918 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Caledonian Station Hotel Roll of Honour and on the Selkirk Roll of Honour.


GNR. GEORGE NOBLE. Royal Field Artillery
George Noble – age 33 – Gunner (38361) 16th Battery, 41st Brigade, Royal Field Artillery.
George enlisted in the National Reserve in December 1914 and joined his battery in France in April 1915.
Born 1884 in Galashiels. Son of John and Agnes (Davidson) Noble of 27 Stirling Street, Galashiels. Husband of Mary (Kerse) Noble of Stirling Street, Galashiels and of 145 Dumbiedykes Road, Edinburgh who he married in 1913 in Kelso, Roxburghshire.
Killed in Action on 22 April 1917 and buried in Roclincourt Military Cemetery, France.

William John Noble – age 21 – Private (200471) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers attached to the 52nd Division Signal Company.
William was a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB and as Private (6649) he joined the 1/4th KOSB in Egypt in 1916. He served in Palestine until the battalion moved to France in April 1918. William was buried in Blairville Orchard British Cemetery but was re-interred in Souchez in 1920.
Born 1897 in Galashiels. Son of John and Agnes (Davidson) Noble of 27 Stirling Street, Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 24 August 1918 and buried in Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery, Souchez, France.

LT. THOMAS O'HARA. Royal Scots
Thomas O'Hara – age 32 – Lieutenant 1/4th Battalion (Queen's Edinburgh Rifles) Royal Scots.
Tom was a member of the Gala Harriers Club, was connected to the legal profession and was a member of the Territorial 4th Royal Scots. He was commissioned from Corporal (661) in February 1915 and promoted to Lieutenant in September. He joined the 1/4th Battalion at Gallipoli in November 1915 and then served in Egypt and Palestine before they moved to France in April 1918.

PTE. PETER OLIVER. King's Own Scottish Borderers
Peter Oliver – age 36 – Private (7078) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Peter had enlisted as Private (6315) in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in 1897 and served until November 1905. He was living with his widowed mother at 12 Queen Street, Galashiels when he enlisted as Private (3152) in the Royal Scots Reserve in August 1914. He was posted to the 11th Battalion at Aldershot but he was discharged in October as “unlikely to become an efficient soldier” due to a previous fracture of his leg. He obviously re-enlisted in the KOSB and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1878 in Galashiels. Son of the late John Oliver and of Alice or Alison Graham (Richardson) Oliver of 12 Queen Street, Galashiels and of 62 Crosshill Street, Lennoxtown, Glasgow.
Alice married William Paris in 1899 in Glasgow but he died there in 1912.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.


PTE. CHARLES O'NEILL. Royal Army Veterinary Corps
Charles O'Neill – age 47 – Private (SE/2157) Army Veterinary Corps
Charles was a groom and his expertise with horses led to him being Specially Enlisted into the AVC. He landed in France in December 1914 but he was evacuated home and he died of pneumonia in Killingbeck Sanatorium in Leeds.
Born at 1868 in Dundalk, Ireland. Son of James and Helen O'Neill. Husband of Marie O'Neill of 8 Bank Close, Galashiels.
Died on Service on 24 March 1915 and buried in Leeds Roman Catholic Cemetery, Yorkshire.

PTE. DAVID ORMISTON, Royal Engineers
David Ormiston – age 29 – Sapper (42634) 73rd Field Company, Royal Engineers.
David had served his apprenticeship as a painter in Selkirk and he lived in Scott's Place in Selkirk when he enlisted. He landed with his company, as part of the 15th (Scottish) Division, at Boulogne in July 1915 but he was killed two months later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1886 in Galashiels. Son of the late Janet (Johnstone) Ormiston (died 1900) and of the late Charles Cowan Ormiston (died 1908) of Galashiels.
Brother of Mrs Elizabeth Bertram of 26 Queen Street, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 26 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Selkirk Roll of Honour.

PTE. ROBERT ORMISTON. King's Own Scottish Borderers

Robert Ormiston – age 22 – Private (12354) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert was employed by Messrs James Boyd & Son, Manufacturers, in Jedburgh, Roxburghshire when he enlisted in 1914. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in May 1915 but he was killed by a sniper three months later.
Born 1893 in Galashiels. Son of the late Janet (Johnstone) Ormiston (died 1900) and of the late Charles Cowan Ormiston (died 1908) of Galashiels
Brother of Mrs Elizabeth Bertram of 26 Queen Street, Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 4 August 1915 and buried in Le Touret Military Cemetery, Richebourg-L'Avoue, France.

LT. J. R. OVENS. CONN. RANGERS
John Roberts Ovens – age 25 – Lieutenant, 1st Battalion, Connaught Rangers.
John was educated in Edinburgh and at Heidelberg before attending the Royal Military College at Sandhurst. He was commission in the Bedfordshire Regiment in May 1908, transferred to the Connaught Rangers in December 1909 and was promoted in June 1911 while serving in India.
In August 1914 the battalion was in Ferozepore, India. They sailed from Karachi as part of the Indian Corps and moved to France, landing at Marseilles on 26 September 1914.
Born 1889 in Edinburgh. Son of the late John Roberts Ovens (died 1891) and of Henrietta (Rutherford) Ovens formerly of Ladhope House, Galashiels and of Horsehill House, Callow End, Worcester.
Killed in Action on 5 November 1914 and buried in Rue-Du-Bacquerot No.1 Military Cemetery, Laventie, France.

PTE. JOHN PATERSON. King's Own Scottish Borderers
John Paterson – age 27 – Private (200556) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John landed at Gallipoli with the 1/4th KOSB as Private (6822) and was wounded in the head during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah. At some point he transferred to the 7th/8th Battalion.
Born 1891 in Galashiels as John Paterson Scott. Son of Mary Ann Scott (Paterson) and of John Paterson of 181 Galapark Road, Galashiels who married in 1899 in Galashiels. Husband of Mary Jane (Mabon) Paterson of Galapark Road who he married in 1915 in Edinburgh.
Died of Wounds on 23 July 1918 and buried in Buzancy Military Cemetery, Aisne, France.


PTE. ROBERT J. PATERSON. King's Own Scottish Borderers
Robert John Paterson – age 23 – Private (6719) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert was a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB and was mobilised in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1892 in Galashiels. Son of the late Thomas Paterson (died 1913) of 19 Scott Street, Galashiels and of Jane Hunter (Tait) Paterson of 274 Galapark Road, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.


CAPT. W. P. PATERSON. King's Own Scottish Borderers
William Paterson Paterson – age 21 – Captain, 3rd Battalion attached to the 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William had been educated at the Royal High School and the Edinburgh Academy and was serving an apprenticeship at a tweed mill in Galashiels when, as a former cadet in the Officer Training Corps, he gained a commission in the KOSB in August 1914. He went to France as a Lieutenant in February 1915 and was promoted in April 1916. William was killed at Delville Wood on the Somme
Born 1895 in Old Aberdeen. Son of the Rev. William Paterson Paterson, D.D., Professor of Divinity in the University of Edinburgh, and of Jane (Sanderson) Paterson of 3 Royal Terrace, Edinburgh. They had married in 1888 in Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 30 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named Edinburgh Academy memorial and, together with his brother Robert on the Royal High School in Edinburgh.
Robert Sanderson Paterson – age 21 – Second Lieutenant, 62nd Battery, Royal Field Artillery attached to "Chestnut Troop" Royal Horse Artillery. Killed at the Battle of Neuve Chapelle on 11 March 1915.

2ND.LT. WALTER PATON. R. N. LAN. R.
Walter Paton – age 34 – Second Lieutenant, 2/5th Battalion, The Loyal North Lancashire Regiment.
Walter enlisted in November 1914 and as Private (14438) he joined the 1st Cameron Highlanders in France in May 1915. Later he transferred as Acting Sergeant (112202) to the Royal Engineers. He was commissioned from an officer cadet in August 1917 and joined the 2/5th LNLR which had landed at Le Havre earlier that year.
Born 1883 in Wilton, Hawick, Roxburghshire. Son of Walter and Janet (Bain) Paton of Park Street, Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 26 October 1917 and buried in Poelcapelle British Cemetery, Belgium.


PTE. WILLIAM PATON. King's Own Scottish Borderers
William Paton – age 19 – Private (6574) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was a warehouseman and a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB when he was mobilised in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1895 in Glen Park, Melrose as William Johnstone Paton.
Son of Grace Paton.
In 1901 William was living with his grandparents Walter and Janet (Bain) Paton and he was with them at Park Street, Galashiels when he was mobilised.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.


PTE. ROBERT G. PAXTON. Royal Army Service Corps
Robert George Paxton – age 30 – Private (M/341601) Motor Transport, Army Service Corps attached to the 317th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery.
Robert was a motor mechanic in charge of the garage at the Crown Hotel in Thornton, Fife when he enlisted in Kirkcaldy in the Autumn of 1917. Robert died of influenza in the 11th General Hospital in Genoa, Italy.
Born 1887 in Direlton, East Lothian. Son of John and Agnes (Henderson) Paxton of Torwoodlee, Galashiels and of Crossflat,
St. Boswells, Roxburghshire. Husband of Christina Robertson (Watt) Paxton of Torwoodlee who he married in 1913 in Alva, Clackmannanshire.
Died on Active Service on 1 November 1918 and buried in Staglieno Cemetery, Genoa, Italy.
Also named on the Thornton War Memorial.


SGT. W. PEARCE. Highland Light Infantry
William Pearce – age 28 – Sergeant (17575) 12th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
William, as a Private, landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915.
Born 1888 in Whithorn, Wigtownshire. Son of Maurice (a coachman) and Janet (Williamson) Pearce of The Peel, Clovenfords, Caddonfoot, Selkirkshire.
Killed in Action on 13 August 1916 and buried in Caterpillar Valley Cemetery, Longueval, Somme, France.
Also named on the Caddonfoot Parish War Memorial.


PTE. RICHARD PEARSON. Royal Scots
Richard Pearson – age 19 – Private (59926) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots.
Richard was an apprentice boot repairer when he enlisted in October 1916. He was mobilised to the 53rd Training Battalion in October 1917 and posted as Private (45695) to the 12th Highland Light Infantry in France in May 1918 but was transferred to the 2nd Royal Scots. Richard died in the 29th Casualty Clearing Station at Delsaux Farm.
Born 1899 in Galashiels. Son of the late William Pearson (died 1915) and of Helen or Ella (Fleming) Pearson (formerly Mrs Middlemiss) of 95 St. Andrew Street, Galashiels.
Died of Wounds on 24 October 1918 and buried in Delsaux Farm Cemetery, Beugny, France.

GNR. FRANK PENNY. TANK CORPS
Frank Bernard Penny – age 18 – Private (200285) 2nd Battalion, Tank Corps.
Frank was posted as Gunner (1782) to the Motor Machine Gun Section of the Royal Field Artillery which later became part of the Tank Corps.
Born 1900 in Galashiels as Francis. Son of the late Lawrence Penny (died 1900) and of Annie (Cunningham) Penny of 3 Balmoral Place, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 18 September 1918 and named on the Vis-En-Artois Memorial, France.
Also named on the Our Lady and St Andrew R.C. Church memorial in Galashiels.


PIPER DAVID PHILP. King's Own Scottish Borderers
David Philips – age 43 – Private (48386) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
In 1881 the Philp family were in Markinch, Fife where the father, David, was a baker but by 1891 they were in Galashiels and were using the name Philips.
David junior served his apprenticeship in Galashiels and was a tailor when he enlisted. I cannot trace any record to show that David served overseas and the 2nd KOSB had returned from Belgium in early 1919. David died of tuberculosis in Aldershot.
Born 1876 in Kirkcaldy, Fife as David Philp. Son of the late David Philips (died 1916) and of the late Jane (Mills) Philips (died 1915) formerly of Galapark Road, Galashiels. Husband of the late Margaret Hamilton (Stewart) Philips (died 1907) of 62 Stirling Street. Galashiels who he married in 1901 in Edinburgh.
Died on 25 June 1919 and buried in Galashiels (Eastlands) Cemetery. (CWG)


L-CPL. JAMES POUSTIE. King's Own Scottish Borderers
James Poustie – age 23 – Lance Corporal (6685) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was one of the best forwards in the Gala Rugby Club 1st XV and was a power loom tuner when he enlisted in August 1914. He was promoted to L/Cpl. in May 1915 and landed at Gallipoli as part of the battalion's Machine Gun Section in June but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1891 in Galashiels. Son of the late Catherine (Brown) Poustie (died 1902) and of William Poustie of 26 Dale Street, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.

PTE. JOSEPH POW. King's Own Scottish Borderers
Joseph Pow – age 27 – Private (200537) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Joseph was a postman in Galashiels when he enlisted and he landed as Private (6782) with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915. He later served in Egypt and in Palestine where he was killed.
Born 1891 in Galashiels. Son of the late Joseph Pow (died 1913) porter at Galashiels Station, and of Janet (Mein) Pow of 17 St. Andrew Street, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 13 November 1917 and named on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.


PTE. ARCHIBALD PRENTICE. R. W. FUS.
Archibald Prentice – age 31 – Private (63132) 3rd (Reserve) Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers transferred as Private (125889) to the 300th Company, Labour Corps.
In 1911 Archie, aged 24, was a stone mason's assistant boarding at 298 Mill Street, Toxteth Park in Liverpool. He enlisted as Private (12916) in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers but did not go overseas. Archibald died at Toxteth Park.
Born 1886 in Galashiels as Archibald Currie Prentice. Son of Alexander and Elizabeth (Cunningham) Prentice of Galashiels. Husband of Martha (Thomas) Prentice who he married in 1913 in Toxteth Park.
Died on Service on 16 May 1917 and buried in Liverpool (Toxteth Park) Cemetery. (CWG)


SGT. WILLIAM PRESTON. Machine Gun Corps
William Preston – age 21 – Sergeant (18465) 188th Company, Machine Gun Corps.
William landed as Private (12281) with the 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers at Boulogne in May 1915. At some point he joined the MGC.
Born 1896 in Galashiels. Son of William and Margaret Drawhill (Hope) Preston of Park Street, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 26 October 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
