Ken
That is interesting. Was there a connection with the same landowner or the same firm having a base in both areas I wonder?
I hope the answer can be found.
Thanks

There is an excellent article in the Dalgety Bay and Hillend Community Council Newsletter "The Diary" from 2009/10 which tells the story of the Hewitts (Pages 11&12)
http://www.dalgetybay.org.uk/uploads/files/pdf/diary/2009_1201.pdf
The father was factor to his uncle's estates of Broughton and Cally in Kirkcudbrightshire and in 1904 became factor to the Estates of the Earls of Moray (which included Donibristle Park)
So it is quite possible that Adam Watson and the Downie family were found work by the Hewitts. _________________ Ken |

Great piece on the PDF. I was in Dalgety Bay last Saturday. Took some pictures of the war memorial. Might look up the other names _________________ Chaz |

So far we have Downie (Gatehouse) and Watson (Parton) and now I've noticed that the two Hewitt brothers were born in Gatehouse. They are listed on the Anwoth/Girthon Memorial in Gatehouse (as well as on memorials in Aberdour) |
I am researching a memorial in Edinburgh where the person came from Kirkcudbright but enlisted in Edinburgh. _________________ Chaz |

The Dalgetty Bay war memorial is a rustic sandstone pedestal surmounted by a column and cross. The dedication and names of the fallen are set out on a polished granite tablet set into the face of the pedestal. The monument stands at Saint Bridget's Church although when I was taking the photographs a local told me that this was not the original site and that it was moved there in the 1980's (I can't verify this).

WMR 44476, which is a stone at the old church to state that the memorial was there until 1989 corroborates this story. The Old Church is now the Cornerstone Full Gospel Church. The POWIS entry for that Church that the memorial is still there is thus 30 years out of date, which is a most unusual error for POWIS, which can usually be relied on. |
