PTE. ALEXANDER M. LOGAN. Gordons
Alexander Melrose Logan – age 38 – Private (291480) 6th/7th Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
Alexander was a tailor when he enlisted in 1915. He was posted to the 7th Gordons and also served in the 6th Gordons before the battalions were merged in early October 1918.
Born 1879 in Galashiels. [Ladhope] Son of the late William Logan (died 1901) and of the late Elizabeth (Melrose) Logan (died 1911) formerly of High Buckholmside, Galashiels. Husband of Agnes (Kemp) Logan of Halliburton Place, Galashiels who he married in 1917 in Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 12 October 1918 and buried in Avesnes-Le-Sec Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
Also named on the Galashiels East Church memorial.


PTE. GEORGE LOWRIE. Royal Highlanders (Black Watch)
George Lowrie – age 22 – Private (S/9890) 4th/5th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
George was educated at Boroughmuir School in Edinburgh before becoming a Student of Arts at Edinburgh University in 1913. He enlisted in July 1915 and joined the 8th Black Watch in France in December 1915. He was wounded on the Somme in July 1916 and evacuated home. He returned to France in December 1917 and served with the 1st Black Watch before joining the 4th/5th Battalion. George's remains were recovered from his battlefield burial and re-interred in Peronne in July 1919.
Born 1895 in Galashiels. Son of John and Jane Buchanan (Smart) Lowrie of Magdala Terrace, Galashiels and of 44 Balcarres Street, Edinburgh.
Killed in Action on 24 March 1918 and buried in Peronne Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France.
Also named on the Boroughmuir School memorial and on the Edinburgh University Roll of the Fallen.


L-CPL. NOAH LUDSKI. King's Own Scottish Borderers
Note: All WW1 military records use Ludskie.
Noah Ludskie – age 39 – Lance Corporal (7573) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
In 1891 Noah was being educated at the Jews' Hospital and Orphan Asylum in Norwood, London and in 1901 he was a tailor living with the Purves family at 29 High Buckholmside, Galashiels. He served as Lance Corporal (8948) with the York and Lancaster Regiment in the South African War in 1902 but returned to Galashiels later that year and he was employed as a presser at Waukrigg Mill when he enlisted. He volunteered for overseas service in May 1915 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1876 in Leeds, Yorkshire. Son of the late Reuben Ludski (born Warsaw) and the late Rosa (Rehfeld) Ludski. (born Germany) Husband of Mary Ann McIntosh of 160 Halliburton Place, Galashiels who he married in 1902 in Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.

PTE. THOMAS LUNN. King's Own Scottish Borderers
Thomas Lunn – age 23 – Private (6839) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Thomas was a pattern weaver, living at 29 Queen Street, Galashiels, and a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB. He was mobilised in August 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1890 in Galashiels. [Ladhope] Son of Walter and Sarah (Cribbis) Lunn of 32 Wilderhaugh, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.


CPL. JOHN LYONS. King's Own Scottish Borderers
John Lyons – age 33 – Corporal (16476) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was a slater to trade and a step-dancer of some merit. He was well known member of the Galashiels Amateur Dramatic Society. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in May 1915 but he was killed four months later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1881 in Galashiels. Son of Michael and Ann (Reid) Lyons, of 5a Park Street, Galashiels,
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Our Lady and St Andrew R.C. Church memorial in Galashiels.

William Lyons – age 29 – Private (5189) 3/8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
William was a mill worker when he enlisted. He joined the 1/8th Royal Scots in France in August 1915 but he suffered from shell-shock and was evacuated to Craigleith Hospital in Edinburgh where he died.
Born 1887 in Galashiels. [Ladhope] Son of Michael and Ann (Reid) Lyons, of 5a Park Street, Galashiels,

PTE. DAVID S. MABON. Royal Scots
David Sibbald Mabon – age 43 – Private (3366) 3rd Reserve Battalion, Royal Scots.
David was a mill worker aged 18 when he enlisted as Private (4268) in the Royal Scots in January 1892. He served in South Africa from November 1899 to September 1902 and was transferred to the Army Reserve in January 1904. He and his wife lived at 11 Yeaman Place, Dundee Street, Edinburgh but he was living in the Scottish Naval and Military Veterans Residence at Whitefoord House in Edinburgh when he re-enlisted in August 1914. He became ill in May 1915 and he was discharged from the Army with a Silver War Badge (118519) in January 1916. David died of spinal cancer in the Craigleith Military Hospital in Edinburgh.
Born 1875 in Galashiels. Son of the late William and Elizabeth (Sibbald) Mabon formerly of 75 Scott Street, Galashiels.
Husband of Catherine (Molloy) Mabon who he married in 1898 in Edinburgh.
David's death register shows him as the widower of Catherine but she died as the widow of David Maben, Private Royal Scots in 1931 in Edinburgh.
Died on 6 October 1918 and buried in Edinburgh (Comely Bank) Cemetery. (CWG)


PTE. JOHN MABON. King's Own Scottish Borderers
John Mabon – age 20 – Private (200403) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB and he was mobilised in August 1914. He landed with the 1/4th KOSB at Gallipoli as Private (6530) in June 1915 and served as a stretcher-bearer until he contracted enteric fever. He was evacuated home and when he recovered he was posted to the 1/5th KOSB in Palestine where he was killed at Gaza.
Born 1897 in Galashiels. Son of Robert and Mary (MacKay) Mabon of 77 High Buckholmside, Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 19 April 1917 and buried in Gaza War Cemetery, Palestine.


PTE. THOMAS MABON. Highland Light Infantry
Thomas Mabon – age 19 – Private (55858) 1/5th (City of Glasgow) Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
Thomas had joined his battalion in Palestine before they left there for service in France. They arrived at Marseilles in April 1918.
Born 1898 in Galashiels as Thomas Dryden Mabon. Son of the late Mary (Davidson) Mabon (died 1910) and of John Mabon of 152 Halliburton Place, Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 24 August 1918 and buried in Wancourt British Cemetery, France.


CPL. WILLIAM MABON. Camerons
Thought to be a brother of John Mabon (above):
William Maben – age 26 – Corporal (8545) 1st Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
In 1911 William Maben, aged 22, was a Lance Corporal with the 1st Camerons at Aldershot, Hampshire. He was resident in Rosyth in Fife at the outbreak of war and it seems likely that he was a reservist as he joined his battalion, which had landed at Le Havre a month earlier, on 13 September 1914.
Born 1891 at High Buckholmside in Galashiels [Ladhope] as William Mabon.
Son of Robert and Mary (MacKay) Mabon of High Buckholmside, Galashiels.
It seems that William became split from his family as in 1901 he was at the Smyllum Orphanage in Lanark as William Mabon, aged 11, born Galashiels and the Army Registers of Soldiers effects shows that monies were never issued to any family member.
Missing in Action on 31 October 1914 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Our Lady and St Andrew R.C. Church memorial in Galashiels.

Adam Douglas Mack – age 18 – Private (7668) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Adam was a farm servant when he enlisted. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1896 in Fala & Soutra, Midlothian. Son of Alexander and Janet (Douglas) Mack of Easter Langlie Farm, Galashiels/Melrose border.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Melrose Parish War Memorial in Roxburghshire.


PTE. JAMES MACK. Machine Gun Corps
James Mack – age 32 – Private (182479) Machine Gun Corps.
James had worked in the Abbots Mill in Galashiels for 17 years and was a foreman spinner when he enlisted in September 1918. While in training he became ill and he died of pneumonia in the Military Hospital at Cannock Chase, Lichfield, Staffordshire.
Born 1886 in Galashiels. Son of the late George Mack (died 1910) and of the late Janet (Nairns) Mack (died 1914) formerly of 3 Douglas Street, Galashiels.
Died on Service on 8 November 1918 and buried in Galashiels (Eastlands) Cemetery (CWG)


PTE. ROBERT MACK. King's Own Scottish Borderers
Robert Mack – age 26 – Private (200468) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert was a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB and he was mobilised in August 1914. He landed with the 1/4th KOSB at Gallipoli as Private (6643) in June 1915 and later served in Egypt and Palestine before transferring at some point to the 2nd KOSB.
Born 1892 in Galashiels. Son of John and Mary (Innes) Mack of 13 Greenbank Street, Galashiels.
Died of Wounds on 3 September 1918 and buried in St. Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, France.


PTE. WILLIAM D. MACK. King's Own Scottish Borderers
William Dalgleish Mack – age 25 – Private (40142) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Born 1891 in Galashiels.
Son of Robert and Annie (Dalgleish) Mack of 182 Croft Street, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 6 May 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.

PTE. JAMES MANDERSTON. Camerons
James Manderston – age 21 – Private (S/13939) 7th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Known to his family as Hamish, he was educated at Pitlochry High School before the family moved to his father's home-town of Galashiels. He was employed in Comelybank Mill in Galashiels when he enlisted and he landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915 but he was killed two months later during the battle at Loos.
Born 1894 in Moulin, Pitlochry, Perthshire. Son of James and Jessie (McLaren) Manderston of Magdala Terrace, Galashiels who married in 1893 in Moulin.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Pitlochry Higher Grade School memorial.


PTE. JOHN L. H. MANN. Royal Scots
John Lees Hall Mann – age 24 – Private (270985) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots.
John was a millworker when he enlisted as Private (7230) in the 2/4th King's Own Scottish Borderers in November 1914. He was posted to as Private (315622) to the 15th Scottish Rifles in January 1917 and landed in France in September but was transferred to the Royal Scots and joined the 2nd Battalion in May 1918. John died in the 14th Stationary Hospital at Wimereux.
Born 1894 in Galashiels. Son of James and Jane Lees (Hall) Mann of 16 Abbots Place, Galashiels.
Died of Wounds on 6 September 1918 and buried in Terlincthun British Cemetery, Wimille, France.


PTE. GEORGE MARK. King's Own Scottish Borderers
Not listed by CWGC.
George Mark – age 35 – Private (7064) 2/4th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
George, aged 18, was a millworker when he enlisted as Private (8237) in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in January 1902. He served with the 1st Battalion in South Africa in 1902/3, the 2nd Battalion in India from 1903, and again in South Africa from 1906. He was transferred to the Army Reserve in 1910 and was discharged from the Army in January 1914. He re-enlisted as Private (7064) in the KOSB and was at Hawick when he was discharged from the Army in March 1916. George died of tuberculosis in Galashiels.
Born 1883 in Galashiels. [Ladhope] as George William Mark. Son of George and Margaret Wilson (Fairbairn) Mark of Halliburton Place, Galashiels.
Died on 1 June 1919.


PTE. JAMES MARTIN. King's Own Scottish Borderers
Note: also known as James Thomson he is listed under both names on this memorial.
James Thomson – age 30 – Private (12734) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was a ploughman at Rink, Caddonfoot, Selkirkshire when his son David Hutchison Thomson was born there in January 1914. He was employed at Rhymers Tweed Mill in Earlston, Berwickshire when he enlisted and he landed with his battalion at Boulogne in May 1915 but he was killed four months later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1885 in Galashiels. [Ladhope] Son of Janet Thomson (later Mrs John Martin) of Comely Bank Terrace, Galashiels. Husband of Mary (Lunam) Thomson who he married in 1912 in Earlston, Berwickshire.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Caddonfoot Parish and the Earlston Parish War Memorials as James Thomson.


CPL. ROBERT S. MASON. Royal Army Service Corps
Robert Scott Mason – age 33 – Corporal (S/307598) "E" Supply Company, Royal Army Service Corps.
Robert died in the 45th General Hospital in Salonica, northern Greece.
Born 1886 in Galashiels. [Ladhope] Son of John Embilton Mason and of Margaret (Scott) Mason of 95 High Buckholmside, Galashiels.
Died on Service on 1 October 1919 and buried in Mikra British Cemetery, Kalamaria, Greece.

PTE. RUSSELL MASON. Royal Scots
George Russell Mason – age 20 – Private (2009) 1/4th Battalion (Queen's Edinburgh Rifles) Royal Scots.
Russell had served his apprenticeship as a painter with Tait Brothers in Galashiels and he was well known in the town as a musician and singer. He enlisted in August 1914 and was with his company at the Infirmary Street Baths in Edinburgh when he drowned.
Born 1894 in Old Macher, Aberdeen. Son of John and Isabella (Strachan) Mason of 30 Beaconsfield Place, Aberdeen.
Died on Service on 10 September 1914 and buried in Aberdeen (Allenvale) Cemetery. (CWG)
His brother John Hampton Strachan Mason, M.A. also fell. A graduate of Aberdeen University he served as Private (2193) with the 4th Gordon Highlanders but was killed a year after his brother had died, on 25 September 1915.


PTE. WILLIAM MATHER. Machine Gun Corps
William Mather – age 23 – Private (56332) 155th Company, Machine Gun Corps.
William enlisted as Private (7319) in the 1/4th King's Own Scottish Borderers and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915. He then served in Egypt and in Palestine where he was killed at Gaza. At some point he had been transferred to his Brigade's Machine Gun Company.
Born 1894 in Galashiels. Son of Mary Mather of 100 Lintburn Street, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 19 April 1917 and named on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.


PTE. ROBERT MEIN. King's Own Scottish Borderers
Robert Mein – age 22 – Private (201051) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert joined his battalion in Egypt as Private (7900) but died of disease in hospital in Alexandria.
Born 1894 in Melrose, Roxburghshire. Son of the late Isabella (Watt) Mein (died 1914) and of Joseph Mein of Langhaugh Mill, Galashiels and of Torwoodlee, Caddonfoot, Galashiels.
Died on Active Service on 27 March 1917 and buried in Alexandria (Hadra) War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.

Born 1890 in Galashiels [Ladhope] as James Mein. Son of Walter and Isabella McInnes (Millar) Mein of 139 Magdala Terrace, Galashiels. Husband of Mary Ann (Wood) Mein who he married in 1917 in Edinburgh.
Missing in Action on 4 October 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.

William Millar Mein – age 26 – Private (352159) 11th Battalion, Royal Scots.
William was employed as a grocer in Market Street, Galashiels when he enlisted as Private (352159) in the Royal Field Artillery. He was transferred as Private (25474) to the Royal Scots Fusiliers before being posted as Private (5479) to the 1/9th (Highlanders) Battalion of the Royal Scots in France.
Born 1892 in Galashiels. Son of Walter and Isabella McInnes (Millar) Mein of 139 Magdala Terrace, Galashiels.
Died of Wounds on 5 April 1918 and buried in Voormezeele Enclosures No.1 and No.2, Belgium.


PTE. JAMES MELROSE. King's Own Scottish Borderers
James Melrose – age 19 – Private (11496) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was a millworker when he enlisted in March 1913. He was a member of the pipe band when his battalion, which had been in Ireland, landed at Le Havre on 15 August 1914. Robert was fatally wounded two months later and died in hospital in Bolougne.
Born 1895 in Galashiels. Son of Isabella Melrose and step-son of John Nicholson of 10 Hunter Square, Galashiels who married in 1903 in Galashiels.
Died of Wounds on 18 October 1914 and buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Our Lady and St Andrew R.C. Church memorial in Galashiels.

Born c.1878 in Canada. Son of the late Helen (Thomson) Melrose (died 1915) and of Adam Melrose of Magdala Terrace, Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 4 July 1916 and buried in Bernafay Wood British Cemetery, Montauban, Somme, France.


L-CPL. DAVID MERCER. M.M. Scottish Rifles
David Mercer, Military Medal – age 26 – Lance Corporal (41720) 5th/6th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
David enlisted as Private (48172) and was posted to the 16th Royal Scots but he was transferred to the Scottish Rifles.
He was awarded a M.M. in September 1918.
Born 1891 in Galashiels. [Ladhope] Son of the late George Mercer (died 1895) and of Janet (Nisbet) Mercer of 57 Croft Street, Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 26 October 1918 and buried in Romeries Communal Cemetery Extension, France.


LT. W. MALCOLM MERCER. King's Own Scottish Borderers
William Malcolm Mercer – age 32 – Lieutenant, 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was a well-known local athlete, having been a member of Gala Football Club and of Gala Cricket Club and he enlisted as Private (6909) in the 4th KOSB at the outbreak of war. He was commissioned in May 1915 and joined the 1/4th KOSB at Gallipoli in August. He then served in Egypt and Palestine and was promoted in July 1917.
Born 1885 in Melrose, Roxburghshire. Son of the late James Mercer (died 1903) of Buckholmside Sawmills. Galashiels and of Isabella Murray (Turnbull) Mercer (died 1909) of Langsyde, Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 28 November 1917 and buried in Ramleh War Cemetery, Israel.

Due to the various spellings I have listed the MILLAR and MILLER names together.

PTE. ANDREW MILLAR. R.M.L.I. Royal Navy
Andrew Millar – age 21 – Private (CH/17680) H.M.S. Laurentic, Royal Marine Light Infantry.
Andrew enlisted in November 1912 together with his friend Charles Inglis (see above) He joined the “Laurentic” on 12 December 1916.
The “Laurentic” was a liner of the White Star Line. She was converted to an armed merchant cruiser and sank after striking two mines laid by the German submarine U-80 off Lough Swilly to the north of Ireland.
Born 1895 in Galashiels. Son of Ann (Millar) Hogarth of 29 High Buckholmside, Galashiels who married George Hogarth in 1911 in Galashiels.
Killed by Enemy Action/ Lost at Sea on 25 January 1917 and named on the Chatham Naval Memorial, Kent.
Also named on the Our Lady and St Andrew R.C. Church memorial in Galashiels.


SGT. DAVID MILLAR. King's Own Scottish Borderers
David Millar – age 34 – Sergeant (6026) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
David was for many years a three-quarters for Gala Football Team and was a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB. He was mobilised in August 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1881 in Galashiels as David Miller. Son of the late Euphemia (McMillan) Miller (died 1893) and of James Miller of Galabank Street, Galashiels. Husband of Mary (Cunningham) Millar of 15 Galabank Street who he married in 1903 in Galashiels as David Millar.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.


CPL. E. MILLER. Canada
Edward Millar – age 29 – Corporal (110372) 5th Battalion, Canadian Mounted Rifles.
Edward worked at Abbotsford Mill in Galashiels, served with the Territorial 4th King's Own Scottish Borderers and was a member of the Gala Harriers Cross Country Team before he emigrated to Canada. He was a millworker when he enlisted at Sherbrooke in Quebec in March 1915. He sailed with his battalion from Quebec in July and they landed in France in October but due to illness he was evacuated to hospital in Folkestone, England in December 1915. He then served with several Reserve Battalions in England before re-joining the 5th CMR in November 1917.
Born 1888 in Galashiels. [Ladhope] Son of Elizabeth (Millar) Laidlaw of 47 Oakbank Place, Winchburgh, West Lothian and step-son of Peter Laidlaw who had married in 1902 in Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 15 March 1918 and buried in Thelus Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Sherbrooke War Memorial and on the Winchburgh and Niddry War Memorial as Edward Millar.

PTE. HUNTER MILLER. Seaforths
Hunter Miller – age 20 – Private (S/8496) 1st Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
Hunter was a millworker when he enlisted as Private (15974) in the Cameron Highlanders in December 1914 however he was found to be medically unfit and was discharged in January 1915. He re-enlisted in May 1915 and joined the 1st Seaforths in France in August and moved with them to Mesopotamia, landing at Basra in December. Hunter died in hospital in Amara.
Born 1896 in Galashiels. Son of John Hunter Miller and Christina Watson (Swanston) Miller of Lintburn Street, Galashiels.
Died on Active Service on 20 July 1916 and buried in Amara War Cemetery, Iraq.
Also named on the Galashiels East Church memorial.

James Swanston Millar – age 27 – Private (42061) 15th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
James was a millworker when he enlisted in December 1915. He was posted as Private (29801) to the 1st King's Own Scottish Borderers in France before transferring to the HLI. He was discharged from the Army as “no longer physically fit for active service” and awarded a Silver War Badge (B139951) in March 1919. James died in the Edinburgh War Hospital at Bangour, West Lothian.
Born 1893 in Galashiels as Miller. Son of John Hunter Miller and Christina Watson (Swanston) Miller of Lintburn Street, Galashiels. Husband of Grace Johnstone (Moultrie) Millar of 110 Lintburn Street, Galashiels who he married in 1914 in Galashiels as James Swanston Millar.
Died on 24 November 1920.


L-SGT. ROBERT MILLAR. King's Own Scottish Borderers
Robert Millar – age 22 – Lance Sergeant (6423) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert had been a half-back with Selkirk football club. He was a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB and was living in Galashiels when he was mobilised in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1894 in Selkirk. Son of Robert and Jane (Laidlaw) Millar of 25 Buccleuch Road, Selkirk. Husband of Mary Ann (McLaughlin) Millar of Overhaugh Street, Galashiels who he married in 1914 in Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.


PTE. WILLIAM W. MILLAR. King's Own Scottish Borderers
William White Millar – age 19 – Private (7060) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was employed at Netherdale Mill when he enlisted. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1896 in Galashiels. Son of the late Janet (White) Millar (died 1897) and of James Millar of 8 Waverley Place, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.

PTE. GEORGE G. MILLS. Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders
George Graham Mills – age 26 – Private (269) 1st Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
George had been in the Army for 8 years, initially as Private (9596) in the Royal Scots Fusiliers. He was serving with the 1st Argylls in Dinapore, India in August 1914 and they returned to England, landing Plymouth in November 1914 before landing at Le Havre in December. A year later they moved to Salonica in northern Greece.
Born 1890 in Galashiels. Son of the late George Mills (died 1908) and of the late Elizabeth (Graham) Mills (died 1913) formerly of 75 Kirkbrae, Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 30 September 1916 and buried in Struma Military Cemetery, Greece.
Also named on the Galashiels East Church memorial.


CPL. JAMES MILLS, Canada
James Mills – age 42 – Private (201647) 1st Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
James had worked in a woollen mill in Galashiels and was a wool spinner in Campbellford, Ontario when he enlisted in the 48th Highlanders in Toronto in October 1915. He had previously served for 9 years with the King's Own Scottish Borderers Volunteers. He sailed with the 95th Battalion from Halifax, Nova Scotia in May 1916 and was posted to the 1st Battalion in France in September. James died in the 23rd Casualty Clearing Station at Lozinghem.
Born 1875 in Wisconsin, USA. Son of James and Margaret (Rae) Mills of Galashiels. Husband of Margaret (Mack) Mills of Campbellford, Ontario and of 3 Douglas Street. Galashiels who he married in 1902 in Galashiels. Margaret returned to Campbellford and re-married in 1922.
Died of Wounds on 11 April 1917 and buried in Lapugnoy Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Campbellford War Memorial.

PTE. HARRY MIRTLE. Royal Scots
Harry Mirtle – age 32 – Private (13570) 12th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Harry was working at Caerlee Mill in Innerleithen when he married in August 1911. He landed with his battalion in France in May 1915. Harry and several others from his battalion were killed by a bomb dropped from a German aircraft, including two men from Walkerburn in Peeblesshire – Sergeants Robert French (13580) and William Tait (13595)
Born 1886 in Galashiels as Henry. Son of the late Henry Mirtle (died 1890) of Balmoral Place, Galashiels and of Mary Hannah (Ellis) Mirtle of Innerleithen, Peeblesshire. Husband of Margaret (Turner) Mirtle of Marmion Cottage, Innerleithen who he married in 1911 in Innerleithen.
Killed in Action on 22 October 1917 and buried in Duhallow A.D.S. Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Innerleithen and Peebles War Memorials.


GNR. ADAM MITCHELL. Royal Garrison Artillery
Adam Mitchell – age 26 – Gunner (69082) 48th Heavy Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery.
Adam was employed in the finishing department of Netherdale Mill in Galashiels when he enlisted in November 1915. He was posted to his battery in June 1916.
Born 1893 in Galashiels as Adam Swanson Mitchell. Son of the late Thomas Mitchell (died 1911) and of Isabella (Swanson) Mitchell of 9 Douglas Street, Galashiels.
Died of Wounds on 16 August 1918 and buried in Beveren-Ijzer Churchyard, Belgium.

Joseph Wilson Morgan – age 29 – Private (351576) 1/9th (Highlanders) Battalion, Royal Scots.
Joseph enlisted as Private (4421) in the 1/9th Royal Scots. He was wounded in April 1917.
Born 1888 in Galashiels. Son of the late Thomas Morgan (died 1898) and of Isabella Morgan of 112 St. Andrew Street and of 124 Scott Street, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 20 September 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.

George Morrison – age 28 – Private (12055) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
In 1911 George was lodging at Bridge End, Walkerburn, Peeblesshire and was working in a tweed mill. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in May 1915 but he was killed four months later during the battle at Loos.
Born 1887 in Galashiels. Son of John and Agnes (Hardie) Morrison formerly of Waverley Place, Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 25 September 1915 and buried in Dud Corner Cemetery, Loos, France.
Also named on Peebles and Walkerburn War Memorials.


PTE. WILLIAM MORRISON. Gordons
William Morrison – age 36 – Private (202953) 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
William was a housepainter in Edinburgh when he enlisted.
Born 1882 in Galashiels. [Ladhope] Son of Alexander and Elizabeth (Stewart) Morrison of 111 Lauriston Place, Edinburgh, late of Galashiels. Husband of Jeanie (Aitken) Morrison of 9 Keir Street, Lauriston Place who he married in 1916 in Edinburgh.
Killed in Action on 27 September 1918 and buried in Lowrie Cemetery, Havrincourt, France.


PTE. JAMES MULDOON. Royal Scots
James Muldoon – age 19 – Private (2166) 1/5th Battalion (Queen's Edinburgh Rifles) Royal Scots.
James enlisted in Edinburgh and landed with his battalion at Cape Helles, Gallipoli on 25 April 1915 but he was killed two months later.
Born 1896 in Selkirk. Son of John and Margaret (Turnbull) Muldoon of 3 Caledonian Road, Edinburgh.
John had been a chauffeur at Glenmayne House, Galashiels before becoming a taxi cab owner in Edinburgh. He served as an officer's driver in France.
Missing in Action on 10 June 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.

SGT. JOHN S. MURDOCH. Royal Highlanders (Black Watch)
John Smart Murdoch – age 32 – Sergeant (8054) 1st Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
John had served as Private (7701) with the 1st Black Watch in the South African War in 1901/02 and for six years in India. He was a master baker in Kirkcudbright and as a reservist he was mobilised in August 1914. He rejoined his old battalion and landed with them at Le Havre on 13 August 1914, one of the first British formations to move to France. He served at Mons, the Marne and the Aisne.
Born 1882 in Galashiels. Son of the late John Smart Murdoch and of Janet (Buist) Murdoch of Kirkcudbright. Husband of Jane Martha (Chalmers) Murdoch of 57 High Street, Kirkcudbright and of 6 Ash Place, Galashiels who he married in 1910 in Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 16 September 1914 and named on the La Ferte-Sous-Jouarre Memorial, Seine-et-Marne, France.
Also named on the Kirkcudbright War Memorial, on the St. Cuthbert's Church memorial in Kirkcudbright and on the Kirkcudbright United Free Church memorial.

George Murray – age 24 – Private (7276) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
George was a members of the Town Band and he enlisted at the outbreak of war. He was posted to the 2nd KOSB in December 1914 but was killed three weeks later at Ypres.
Born 1890 in Galashiels [Ladhope] Son of Andrew and Christina (Hodge) Murray of Magdala Terrace, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 17 January 1915 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial. Belgium.

George Robson Murray – age 19 – Private (12879) 11th Battalion, Royal Scots.
George enlisted in Galashiels and landed with his battalion in France in May 1915 but he was killed four months later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1896 in Selkirk. Son of the late Isabella (Neil) Murray (died 1899) and of William Murray of Enfield Cottage, Selkirk.
William and Isabella had married in 1877 in Galashiels and she died there.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Selkirk Roll of Honour.

Missing in Action on 19 April 1917 and named on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.


PTE. JOHN MURRAY. King's Own Scottish Borderers
John Murray – age 33 – Private (200515) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John enlisted in the Border Volunteer Rifles in March 1904. He was employed at Wilderbank Mill and was a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB. He joined the 1/4th Battalion in Egypt as Private (6718) and served in Palestine before they moved to France in April 1918. John was transferred to the 1st KOSB.
Born 1885 in Galashiels. Son of the late Jessie (Amos) Murray (died 1891) and of John Murray of Wilder Place, Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 22 October 1918 and buried in Heestert Military Cemetery, Belgium.


SGT. THOMAS S. MURRAY. Royal Highlanders (Black Watch)
Thomas Stoddart Murray – age 30 – Sergeant (133) 2nd Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
In 1901 Thomas, aged 16, was an assistant tweed warehouseman before he joined the army in 1904 and in 1911 he was serving with the 2nd Black Watch in India. In August 1914 they were based at Bareilly, India as part of the Meerut Division. They moved to France, landing at Marseilles in October 1914 and then moved to Mesopotamia, landing at Basra on 31 December 1915.
Born 1885 in Galashiels. Son of William and Elizabeth (Stoddart) Murray of Burnside, Clovenford, Caddonfoot, Selkirkshire.
Killed in Action on 7 January 1916 and buried in Amara War Cemetery, Iraq.
Also named on the Caddonfoot Parish War Memorial.
