PTE. WILLIAM W. JARDINE. Camerons
William Romanis Walker Jardine – age 19 – Private (31519) 5th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
William was living in Ullapool in Ross-shire when he enlisted at Dingwall. He was wounded in the spring of 1918 and evacuated to the King George Hospital Stamford Street, Lambeth, London where he died.
Born 1898 in Galashiels as William Romanis Walker. Son of Agnes Purves (Walker) Jardine and step-son of William Jardine of Galashiels who married in 1905 in West Derby, Lancashire.
Died of Wounds on 15 May 1918 and buried in Brookwood Military Cemetery, Surrey. (CWG)


MAJ. McGREGOR JOBSON. King's Own Scottish Borderers
McGregor Jobson – age 40 – Major, 4th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
“Max” was a director and secretary of Wright and Jobson, Tweed Mill, Galashiels. He was commissioned in the Roxburgh and Selkirk Volunteer Rifles in July 1902. He transferred to the 4th KOSB when it was formed in 1908 and was promoted to Captain in June 1911. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 where he was wounded. He was promoted to Major in July. He rejoined the battalion in Egypt and served in Palestine before he was posted to the 1/4th Seaforth Highlanders in France in September 1917. Max was wounded and captured in mid April 1918 but died in the Municipal Hospital in Tourcoing.
Born 1878 in Dundee. Son of the late David Jobson (died 1879) and of Mary Patterson (Miller) Jobson. Husband of Ada Marjory (Gulland) Jobson of Langrig, Galashiels who he married in 1910 in Edinburgh.
Died of Wounds on 3 May 1918 and buried in Tourcoing (Pont-Neuville) Communal Cemetery, Nord, France.


CPL. JAMES JOHNSTON. King's Own Scottish Borderers
James Johnston – age 39 – Corporal (200484) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was in business as a saddler in Channel Street in Galashiels and was a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB. He was mobilised in August 1914 and landed as Private (6674) at Gallipoli in June 1915. He was on board the Troopship “Aragon” on his way to rejoin his battalion when the ship was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine UC34 outside of Alexandria Harbour.
Born 1879 in Galashiels. [Ladhope] Son of the late John Johnston (died 1901) and of the late Agnes (Mercer) Johnston (died 1896) Husband of Catherine Munro (Jamieson) Johnston of 92 Lintburn Street and of 7 Tweed Place, Galashiels who he married in 1905 in Galashiels.
Killed by Enemy Action/ Lost at Sea on 30 December 1917 and named on the Chatby Memorial, Egypt.

PTE. PETER JOHNSTON. Royal Scots
Peter Johnston – age 19 – Private (375470) 12th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Peter died in the 44th Casualty Clearing Station at Poperinghe.
Born 1897 in Galashiels. Son of Charles and Jessie Dickson (Hall) Johnston of 65 Meigle Street, Galashiels.
Died of Wounds on 25 September 1917 and buried in Nine Elms British Cemetery, Belgium.


PTE. ALBERT E. JOHNSTONE. D.C.M. Scottish Rifles
Albert Edward Johnstone – age 26 – Private (9941) 1st Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
I cannot find any record that Albert was awarded a Distinguished Conduct Medal.
Albert enlisted in the King's Own Scottish Borderers as boy soldier with his pal Robert Kirkwood (see below) in 1903. Later he transferred to the Cameronians and he landed with his battalion at Le Havre on 15 August 1914.
Born 1889 in Galashiels as Robert Baxter. Son of Robert Baxter of Selkirk and of Georgina Anderson Grainger of 8 Queen Street, Galashiels.
Georgina married George Oliver Nichol in 1902 in Galashiels.
Husband of Jane (Wilson – formerly Mrs Meiklem) Johnstone of 32 Scott Street, Galashiels who he married in December 1915 in Perth.
Their daughter Helen Richmond Farquhar S. Johnstone Meiklem born 17 February 1915, died of TB at Scott Street on 13 March 1917 aged 2. The death was registered as Nellie Nichol Johnstone by her grandfather George Nichol.
Killed in Action on 28 June 1916 and buried in Gorre British and Indian Cemetery, France.

Alexander George Johnstone – age 20 – Private (6473) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
“Allie” was a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB and was mobilised in August 1914, He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1894 in Galashiels. Son of the late Mary Isabella (Heard) Johnstone (died 1901) and of C.S.M. William Johnstone of 28 Market Street, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Galashiels East Church memorial.

Robert Heard Johnstone – age 21 – Private (200708) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert landed with his battalion at Gallipoli as Private (7170) in June 1915. He then served in Egypt and in Palestine where he was wounded at Gaza. Robert was evacuated to hospital in Alexandria where he died.
Born 1896 in Galashiels. Son of the late Mary Isabella (Heard) Johnstone (died 1901) and of C.S.M. William Johnstone of 28 Market Street, Galashiels.
Died of Wounds on 1 May 1917 and buried in Alexandria (Hadra) War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
Also named on the Galashiels East Church memorial.


PTE. THOMAS F. JOHNSTONE. King's Own Scottish Borderers
Thomas Fairgrieve Johnstone – age 25 – Private (41934) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Thomas was a hairdresser's assistant, living at 1 Caledonian Road, Edinburgh when he married in August 1916. He enlisted as Private (353519) in the 1/4th Battalion (Queen's Edinburgh Rifles) Royal Scots but was transferred to the KOSB in France.
Born 1893 in Galashiels. Son of the late George Macrae Johnstone (died 1906) and of Flora Augusta (Ballantyne) Johnstone (from 1912 Mrs William Dickson) of Galashiels. Husband of Jane Ann (Simpson) Johnstone of 13 Young Street, Edinburgh who he married in 1916 in Edinburgh.
Died of Wounds on 19 October 1918 and buried in Rocquigny-Equancourt Road British Cemetery, Manancourt, France.


PTE. JAMES L. JOSS. Canada
James Lumsden Joss – age 30 – Private (133198) 73rd Battalion (Royal Highlanders of Canada) Canadian Infantry.
James had served his apprenticeship in Galashiels and was a painter when he enlisted in Montreal in November 1915. He sailed with his battalion from Halifax, Nova Scotia in March 1916 and landed at Le Havre in August. James died in the 6th Casualty Clearing Station at Barlin.
Born 1886 in Galashiels. Son of John Farquhar Lumsden Joss and of Elizabeth (Hope) Joss of Almonte, Lanark, Ontario. Nephew of D. J. Hope, painter, Galashiels.
The family had emigrated to Canada while James was a young child and his brothers were all born in Almonte. By 1900 they were back in Galashiels but they emigrated again in March 1911.
Husband of Margaret Helen (Ramsay) Joss of Almonte and of Elgin Street, Ottawa who he married in 1914 in Lanark, Ontario.
Died of Wounds on 5 March 1917 and buried in Barlin Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
Also named on the Almonte War Memorial.

Charles Keddie – age 22 – Private (6830) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Charles was employed at Waulkmillhead Mill in Galashiels when he enlisted in September 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1893 in Galashiels as Charles Hall Keddie. Son of Peter and Eliza (Hogg) Keddie of 8 Ladhope Bank, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.


PTE. PATRICK KIERNAN. King's Own Scottish Borderers
Patrick Kiernan – age 39 – Private (7547) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
The 2nd KOSB were in Ireland at the outbreak of war and Patrick landed with the battalion at Le Havre on 15 August 1914.
Born 1875 in Galashiels. [Ladhope] Son of Patrick Kiernan (died 1901) and Mary (Connor) Kiernan (died 1877) of Edinburgh. Husband of Mary (Little) Kiernan of 32 Wilderhaugh who he married in 1910 in Galashiels.
Died of Wounds on 5 May 1915 and buried in Poperinghe Old Military Cemetery, Belgium.


PTE. ROBERT KING. Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders
Robert Patterson King – age 22 – Private (S/21538) 1/5th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Robert and his family moved from Halliburton Place, Galashiels to Kinross after 1911 and Robert enlisted there. His battalion, after service in Palestine, moved from Egypt in 1918, landing at Marseilles in April.
Born 1896 in Galashiels. Son of Robert John King and Joan Douglas (Dobbie) King of 12 Smith Street, Kinross.
Killed in Action on 29 July 1918 and buried in Oulchy-Le-Chateau Churchyard Extension, Aisne, France.
Also named on the Kinross War Memorial as Robert P. King.

LT. ROBERT KIRKWOOD. D.C.M. King's Own Scottish Borderers
Robert Patrick Kirkwood, Distinguished Conduct Medal – age 28 – Lieutenant, 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers attached to the 1st Battalion, North Staffordshire Regiment.
In 1901 the family were at 41 St. John Street, Galashiels where Robert's father, a former CSM in the KOSB, had died in the previous year. Robert enlisted in the KOSB as a boy soldier in 1903 and was serving as Sergeant (8233) with the 2nd KOSB in Ireland when war was declared. He landed with the battalion at Le Havre in August 1914 and was awarded a DCM “For conspicuous gallantry and coolness in action, especially at Ypres from 7th to 9th November, 1914, when he showed a fine example at a critical time in holding his post. Has been noted for the excellent services rendered throughout the campaign.” Robert was wounded in June 1915 and was commissioned in August.
Born 1889 in Cairo, Egypt. Son of the late John William Kirkwood (died 1900) and of Ann Maria (Murphy) Kirkwood formerly of 41 St. John Street, Galashiels and of the Royal Hibernian Military School, Phoenix Park, Dublin.
Missing in Action on 5 October 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Our Lady and St Andrew R.C. Church memorial in Galashiels.


GNR. JAMES KIVLICHAN. Royal Garrison Artillery
James Kivlichan – age 38 – Gunner (96030) 246th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery.
James was a butcher with the Dumbarton Co-operative Society and was living at 13 Bowie Street, Dumbarton when he enlisted in December 1915. He was mobilised in June 1916 and was posted to the 246th Battery in September. They arrived in Mesopotamia in May 1917. James died of malaria in hospital in Baghdad.
Born 1880 in Galashiels. [Ladhope] Son of the late Hugh Kivlichan (died 1894) and Isabella (Craigen) Kivlichan of Orchard Street, Kilmarnock and of 24 St. John Street, Galashiels.
Died on Service on 17 November 1918 and buried in Baghdad (North Gate) War Cemetery, Iraq.
Also named on the Our Lady and St Andrew R.C. Church memorial in Galashiels.


PTE. ALEXANDER KNOX. Royal Scots
Alexander Knox – age 37 – Private (13105) 11th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Alexander was a tailor in Galashiels when he enlisted. He landed with his battalion in France in May 1915 but was killed four months later during the battle at Loos.
Born 1878 in Bathgate, West Lothian. Son of Alexander and Elizabeth (Speedie) Knox of 66 Lintburn Street, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 27 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.

Andrew McDougall Knox – age 18 – Private (6599) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Andrew was an apprentice sawyer at the Buckholmside Sawmill in Galashiels and had been a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB since November 1913. He was mobilised in August 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1896 in Newcastle-on-Tyne. Son of the late Andrew Knox (died 1899) and of Margaret Alice (Armstrong) Knox; and step-son of James Gladstone of 7 Low Buckholmside, Galashiels. James and Margaret married in 1903 in Newcastle.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.


PTE. HUGH KNOX. Highland Light Infantry
Hugh Knox – age 40 – Private (32823) 15th Battalion (1st Glasgow) Highland Light Infantry.
Hugh served his apprenticeship as a grocer with the Waverley Co-operative Society at Channell Street, Galashiels and in 1901 was living with his family at 49 Magdala Terrace. He was the branch manager at Newton, Ayr when he enlisted and he joined his battalion in France in November 1916.
Born 1876 in Galashiels. Son of the late Edward Knox (died 1887) and of Christina (Gill) Knox of 55 Channell Street, Galashiels. Husband of Margaret (Hood) Knox of 8 Bellesleyhill Road, Newton on Ayr who he married in 1906 in Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 4 February 1917 and buried in Varennes Military Cemetery, Somme, France.
Also named on the Ayr War Memorial.

Robert Knox – age 33 – Private (201041) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert joined his battalion at Gallipoli as Private (7870) in November 1915. and later served in Egypt and Palestine before the battalion moved to France in April 1918.
Born 1885 in Galashiels. [Ladhope] Son of the late George Knox (died 1909) and of Elizabeth (King) Knox (died 1907) formerly of Magdala Terrace, Galashiels.

L-CPL. WALTER KNOX. Royal Highlanders (Black Watch)
Walter Knox – age 28 – Lance Corporal (1836) 1/6th (Perthshire) Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
Walter had served his apprenticeship at Hartrigge, Jedburgh, Roxburghshire and was a gardener to Sir Stuart Coats at Ballathie, Stanley in Perthshire when he enlisted in September 1914. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in May 1915 but he was killed less than two months later.
Born 1887 in Jedburgh. Son of the late Robert Knox, saddler, of Jedburgh (died 1911) and of Jessie (Turnbull) Knox of 3 Croft Street, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 24 June 1915 and named on the Le Touret Memorial, France.
Also named on the Jedburgh War Memorial, on a memorial in Jedburgh Old and Trinity Church, and on the Kinclaven Parish War Memorial in Perthshire.


PTE. JAMES H. KYLE. Royal Highlanders (Black Watch)
James Hay Kyle – age 25 – Private (S/10347) 2nd Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
James was a butcher in the High Street, Galashiels when he enlisted as Private (6279) in the 5th Reserve Cavalry Regiment (The Scots Greys) in September 1914. He transferred to the Black Watch and joined the 8th Battalion in France in July 1915 but was gassed at Loos in September. He joined the 2nd Black Watch in Mesopotamia in February 1916 and was at the taking of Baghdad before serving in Egypt and Palestine. James contracted malaria and died in the 32nd Combined Clearing Hospital in Beirut, Palestine.
Born 1893 in Ednam, Roxburghshire. Son of James and Mary (Hay) Kyle of Glenmayne Lodge, and of 199 Galapark Road, Galashiels.
Died on Service on 1 November 1918 and buried in Beirut War Cemetery, Lebanese Republic.

CPL. JAMES LAIDLAW. Royal Scots
James Laidlaw – age 24 – Corporal (22525) 17th Battalion, Royal Scots.
James was a mill worker when he enlisted in April 1915, He was promoted in August and landed with his battalion at Le Havre in February 1916 but he was killed six months later on the Somme.
Born 1892 in Galashiels as James Andrew Laidlaw. Son of Thomas and Alice (Smith) Laidlaw of 1 Roxburgh Street, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 27 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.


R.MAN. THOMAS LAIDLAW. P. O. RIFLES
Thomas Laidlaw – age 35 – Rifleman (371400) 1/8th (City of London) Battalion, London Regiment (Post Office Rifles)
Thomas had been a postman in Galashiels, then at Newlands in Peebleshire in 1901 and, from May 1912 at Berwick-on-Tweed. He enlisted in early 1915 and joined his battalion in France as Rifleman (3590) in November 1915. He was evacuated home due to illness and rejoined his battalion in February 1917. Thomas's remains were recovered from his battlefield grave and re-interred in Tyne Cot in May 1922.
Born 1883 in Galashiels. [Ladhope] Son of William and Isabella (Cockburn) Laidlaw of St Peter's Church Halls, and of Island Street, Galashiels. Husband of Marion Douglas (Wilson) Laidlaw of Wool Market, Berwick-on-Tweed and of "West Linton," Romsay Road, Waitara, Sydney, New South Wales, who he married in 1908 in West Linton, Peeblesshire. Marion emigrated to Australia in September 1920.
Killed in Action on 20 September 1917 and buried in Tyne Cot Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Berwick-on-Tweed War Memorial and on the District Postal Staff memorial in the Berwick-on-Tweed Delivery Office in Wool Market.


GNR. WILLIAM LAIDLAW. Royal Field Artillery
William Laidlaw – age 36 – Gunner (176273) “A” Battery, 291st Brigade, Royal Field Artillery.
William was a tailor in Galashiels. His Brigade landed at Le Havre in January 1917. William died of influenza in the 15th Casualty Clearing Station in Don.
Born 1882 in Galashiels. [Ladhope] Son of William and Mary (Alexander) Laidlaw of Galabank Street, Galashiels. Husband of Jane Tweedie (Park) Laidlaw of Gala Terrace, and of 4 Paton Street, Galashiels who he married in 1902 in Galashiels.
Died on Active Service on 8 November 1918 and buried in Don Communal Cemetery, Annoeullin, France.

Robert Laing – age 18 – Private (6561) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert was a law clerk in Huddersfield Street, Galashiels when he enlisted in the Territorial 4th KOSB in November 1913. He was mobilised in August 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1896 in Galashiels. Son of the late William Laing and of Isabella (Campbell) Laing of 30 Albert Place, and of 62 Douglas Place, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.

William was employed in the Abbotsford Mill in Galashiels when he enlisted. He joined his battalion in France as Private (3906) in 1916.
Born 1897 in Galashiels as William Albert Waugh Landels. Son of Elizabeth Landels of 54 Douglas Place, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 17 March 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.


PTE. HAXTON M. LANG. Camerons
Haxton Lang – age 26 – Private (18253) 2nd Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
In 1901 Haxton and his brother Thomas Welsh Lang were orphans attending the Dumfries and Maxwelltown Industrial School in Dumfries. Haxton was living in Leith, Edinburgh when he enlisted and he joined the 5th Camerons in France in October 1915 before transferring to the 2nd Battalion which arrived in Salonica in northern Greece from France in December 1915.
Born 1889 in Galashiels. Son of the late James Lang (died 1891) and Sarah (Ballantyne) Lang (died 1897) formerly of School Close, Galashiels. Nephew of David and Joan (Ballantyne) Oliver of 90 Pitt Street, Leith.
Died of Wounds on 7 October 1916 and buried in Salonika (Lembet Road) Military Cemetery, Greece.

PTE. JOHN LANG, Royal Scots

John Lang – age 29 – Private (1628) 1/7th Battalion, Royal Scots
John was a coal miner, living in Musselburgh, East Lothian, and was a member of the Territorial 7th Royal Scots. He was mobilised in August 1914 but he was among the men of “A” and “D” Companies of his battalion when they were involved in a rail accident at Quintinshill near Gretna while en-route to Liverpool from Larbert in Stirlingshire. 210 men were killed and 224 injured, forming the majority of the 473 casualties of the worst disaster in British railway history.
Born 1886 in Galashiels as John Lang. Son of the late James Lang (died 1891) and Sarah (Ballantyne) Lang (died 1897) formerly of School Close, Galashiels. Husband of Jane Porteous (Dickson) of 94 North High Street, Musselburgh who he married in 1913 in Musselburgh as John Ballantyne Lang.
Died on Service on 22 May 1915 and buried in Edinburgh (Rosebank) Cemetery.

SGT. GEORGE LAWRIE. L&B HORSE. Cavalry
George Lawrie – age 34 – Saddler/Sergeant (120040) 1/1st Lothians and Border Horse.
In 1901, aged 17, George was an apprentice saddler with his father at High Street, Galashiels. He was a Saddler/Sergeant (976) with the Territorial L&B Horse Yeomanry and was mobilised in August 1914. He was based in Haddington and Dunbar in 1915 before being posted to France. George died of illness in hospital in Rouen.
Born 1883 in Galashiels. Son of John Scott Lawrie and Annie Gilray (Penman) Lawrie of High Street, Galashiels. Husband of Margaret Thomson (Leishman) Lawrie of 73 Victoria Street, Galashiels who he married in 1909 in Galashiels.
Died on Active Service on 6 February 1918 and buried in St. Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, France.


PTE. GEORGE LAWSON. Camerons
George Laing Lawson – age 21 – Private (16011) 2nd Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
George was a grocer when he enlisted. He joined his battalion in France in June 1915 and moved with them to Salonica, in northern Greece, in December 1915. George died of cerebral malaria.
Born 1896 in Tynehead, Crichton, Midlothian. Son of William and Helen (Laing) Lawson, of 130 St. Andrew Street, Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 17 October 1917 and buried in Lahana Military Cemetery, Greece.


SGT. T. H. LAWSON. R.S. GREYS. Cavalry
Thomas Hutchison Lawson – age 24 – Lance Sergeant (D/2784) 2nd Dragoons (Royal Scots Greys)
Thomas was a joiner when he enlisted in November 1908. He landed with his Regiment in France on 17 August 1914 but was blinded by shell-fire in October and evacuated to the 3rd Scottish Military Hospital at Stobhill in Glasgow. He was discharged from the Army as physically unfit in May 1915 and died of cancer in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.
Born 1890 in Newington, Edinburgh. Son of Burgh Firemaster Stephen Lawson and of Jane Chalmers (Hutchison) Lawson of 7 Eskmill Row, Eskbridge, Penicuik, Midlothian. Husband of Minnie (Simpson) Lawson of 84 St Andrew Street, Galashiels and of Canada House, Avenue Road, Hunstanton, Norfolk who he married in 1914 in York. His daughter Margaret Daniel Lawson was born in Galashiels on 31 October 1914.
Died on 25 November 1916 and buried in Edinburgh (Newington or Echo Bank) Cemetery.
Also named on the Penicuik War Memorial.

CPL. THOMAS LAWSON. King's Own Scottish Borderers
Thomas Lawson – age 22 – Corporal (844) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Tom was a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB and was mobilised in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1893 in Ancrum, Roxburghshire. Son of Andrew and Mary (Burnett) Lawson of 177 Scott Street, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.


SGT. WILLIAM H. LAWSON. Camerons
William Hunter Lawson – age – Sergeant (S/13434) 6th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
William was a well known Borders sportsman both in rugby and athletics. He was President and Secretary of the Gala Harriers Club and Secretary of the Borders Amateur Athletics Association. He was a printers clerk in Galashiels when he enlisted in September 1914. He was promoted to Lance Corporal in February 1915 and landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July. He was made a Sergeant in March 1916 but was killed five months later on the Somme while leading a bombing party. William's remains were recovered from his battlefield grave and he was re-interred in Pozieres in June 1919.
Born 1885 in Galashiels. [Ladhope] William Matthew Lawson and of Maggie (Sanderson) Lawson of 11 Tea Street, Galashiels. Husband of Margaret Aitchison of 11 Tea Street and of 16 Gala Terrace, Galashiels who he married in April 1915 in Edinburgh.
Killed in Action on 24 August 1916 and buried in Pozieres British Cemetery, Ovillers-la Boisselle, Somme, France.

PTE. FRED J. LEE. Royal Engineers
Frederick James Lee – age 21 – Lance Corporal (77220) 22nd Air Line Section, 2nd Indian Army Corps Signal Company, Royal Engineers.
Fred had served his apprenticeship as a motor mechanic at Penman's Queensberry Motor Works in Dumfries. He was working in Glasgow, and living at 44 Westend Park Street, when in March 1914, he enlisted in the Territorial Force as Sapper (9053) in the Scottish Airline Signalling Company, Royal Engineers. In April 1915 he re-enlisted in the Regular Army at Hitchen, Hertfordshire as Driver (77220) Royal Engineers and went out to Egypt in August 1915. In April 1916 he moved to Basra but contracted dysentery and died in the 41st Field Ambulance.
Born 1895 in Keir, Dumfriesshire. Son of the late Elizabeth (Cairns) Lee (died 1896) and of Alexander Lister Lee of Yair, Caddonfoot, Selkirkshire and of 121 Bruntsfield Place, Edinburgh.
Died on Active Service on 17 June 1916 and buried in Amara War Cemetery, Iraq.
Also named on the Caddonfoot Parish War Memorial, on the Dumfries Burgh War Memorial, on the Dumfries Academy Memorial, on the Greyfriars Church memorial in Dumfries, and on the Glasgow Roll of Honour.


PTE. SAMUEL LEES. King's Own Scottish Borderers
Samuel Dickson Lees – age 34 – Private (7804) 2/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Samuel was a farm servant when he enlisted in April 1915. He became ill with a gastric problem and was operated on in the Scottish Military Hospital at Stobhill in Glasgow but he died some weeks later.
Born 1879 in Stow, Midlothian as Samuel Lees. Son of the late George Lees (died 1910) and of the late Christina (Dickson) Lees (died 1907). Husband of Margaret (Dodds) Lees of 73 Halliburton Place, and of 32 Kirkbrae, Galashiels who he married in 1907 in Selkirk as Samuel D. Lees.
Died on Service on 6 November 1915 and buried in Galashiels (Eastlands) Cemetery. (CWG)

PTE. WALTER F. G. LEES. Canada
Walter Francis Godwin Lees – age 39 – Private (114661) 4th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
Walter was farming near Moosomin, Saskatchewan when he enlisted there in the Canadian Mounted Rifles in December 1914. He sailed from Canada in November 1915 and was posted to the Royal Canadian Dragoons in France in May 1916. He was wounded in September and was transferred to the 4th Infantry Battalion in April 1917.
Born 1879 in Galashiels. Son of the late Richard Lees (died 1902) and of Ellen (Godwin) Lees (died 1900) formerly of Galashiels.
Brother of Hugh Harold Godwin Lees (solicitor) of Waitknowe Terrace, Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 8 August 1918 and buried in Caix British Cemetery, Somme, France.


PTE. WILLIAM LEISHMAN. Royal Scots
William Leishman – age 25 – Private (351884) 1/9th (Highlanders) Battalion, Royal Scots.
William was a grocer when he enlisted in Kelso, Roxburghshire.
Born 1892 in Galashiels. Son of the late Elizabeth (Smart) Leishman (died 1896) and of Robert Leishman of 51 Meigle Street, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 21 March 1918 and named on the Pozieres Memorial, Somme, France.
Also named on the Kelso War Memorial.


PTE. GEORGE LEITHEAD, Royal Scots
George Leithead – age 21 – Private (16546) 12th Battalion, Royal Scots.
George had served his apprenticeship as a grocer in St Andrew Street, Galashiels. He enlisted in December 1914 and joined the 2nd Royal Scots in in April 1915. He was wounded during the battle of Loos and was evacuated to the 3rd Western General Hospital in Manchester in October 1915. After he had recovered he was posted to the 12th Battalion in France in December. He was wounded again in April 1917 and was treated in the 26th General Hospital at Etaples before he returned to his unit in June. George was killed four months later.
Born 1897 in Pittenweem, Fife. Son of John and Maggie (Emond) Leithead, of 229 Galapark Road, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 12 October 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.

PTE. ALEXANDER R. LENNOX. Scots Guards
Alexander Rutherford Lennox – age 20 – Private (12801) 1st Battalion, Scots Guards.
Alexander enlisted in early 1915 and joined his battalion in France in October 1915. He was hit by a sniper while on sentry duty in the trenches and died in the Lahore British General Hospital in Calais.
Born 1895 in Galashiels. Son of Laurence and Jessie Elizabeth (Rutherford) Lennox of 29 High Buckholmside and of 30 Island Street, Galashiels.
Died of Wounds on 16 January 1916 and buried in Calais Southern Cemetery, France.


L-CPL. ALEXANDER LIDDLE. King's Own Scottish Borderers
Alexander Liddle – age 35 – Private (201569) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Alexander had served his apprenticeship in Galashiels and was in business as a licensed grocer in St Andrew Street when he enlisted. He joined his battalion in Egypt as Private (8691) and served in Palestine before they moved to France in April 1918.
Born 1883 in Galashiels. Son of William and Elizabeth (Wear) Liddle of 46 St. Andrew Street, Galashiels. Husband of Eliza Scott (Hogg) Liddle of 43 Thistle Street, Galashiels who he married in 1916 in Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 20 September 1918 and named on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial, France.


CPL. JOHN H. LINDSAY. King's Own Scottish Borderers
John Harvey Lindsay – age 24 – Corporal (200441) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John played for Gala Hawthorn Football Team and was a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB. He was mobilised in August 1914 and as Private (6601) he landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915. He then served in Egypt and in Palestine where he was wounded. John was evacuated to the 43rs Stationary Hospital in Kantara where he died.
Born 1893 in Stow, Midlothian. Son of William and Margaret Love (Harvey) Lindsay of 147 Halliburton Place, Galashiels.
Died of Wounds on 29 November 1917 and buried in Kantara War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.

GNR. ANGUS LITSTER. Royal Field Artillery
Angus Litster – age 25 – Gunner (109077) Royal Field Artillery.
Angus enlisted in November 1915. He drowned while en route to Mesopotamia.
Born 1891 in Galashiels. [Ladhope] Son of William and Mary (Renwick) Litster of Galashiels.
Died on Service/Lost at Sea on 21 September 1916 and named on the Basra Memorial, Iraq.


PTE. JOHN LITTLE. King's Own Scottish Borderers
(Served as JOHN BROWNLEE).

John Little – age 27 – Private (12655) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John enlisted as John Brownlee at the outbreak of war and was in training at Bordon Camp in Hampshire when he fell from Southampton to London train between Farnham & Aldershot and died of his injuries.
Born 1887 in Galashiels. Son of Andrew and Margaret (Brownlee) Little of Queen Street, Galashiels.
Died on Service on 20 February 1915 and buried in Bordon Military Cemetery, Hampshire. (CWG)


PTE. HUGH LOCKIE. Canada
Hugh Lockie – age 23 – Private (406754) 4th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
Hugh was a tailor when he emigrated to Canada in April 1913. He enlisted in Hamilton, Ontario in April 1915 and sailed from Montreal with the 36th Battalion in June. He was transferred to the 4th Battalion and joined them in France in October 1915. Hugh was fatally wounded on the Somme and died in the 49th Casualty Clearing Station at Contay.
Born 1893 in Selkirk. Son of Thomas and Jane (Douglas) Lockie of 20 Halliburton Place, Galashiels.
Died of Wounds on 10 October 1916 and buried in Contay British Cemetery, Contay, Somme, France.
