PTE. JAMES FOX. King's Own Scottish Borderers
James Fox – age 19 – Private (6589) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was an apprentice painter in Galashiels when he enlisted in the Territorial 4th KOSB in November 1913. He was mobilised in August 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1896 in Ayr. Son of John and Mary (Somers) Fox of 41 Wilderhaugh, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.


R.Q.M.S. HUGH FRASER. King's Own Scottish Borderers
Hugh Fraser – age 48 – Quartermaster Sergeant (6100) 4th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Hugh had been involved with the Volunteers and the Territorials for many years and was mobilised in August 1914. He was appointed QMS for the Depot at Galashiels and had a leading part in raising the Reserve Battalion. He had been a Lieutenant in the Galashiels Boys Brigade and was a Parish Councillor. He died at his home at High Buckholmside, Galashiels.
Born 1867 in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Son of the late Simon and Winforth (Conway) Fraser (both died 1880 in Stirling) Husband of Isabella (Bennett) Fraser of 40 Glendinning Terrace, Galashiels who he married in 1889 in Galashiels.
Died on Service on 30 March 1915 and buried in Galashiels (Eastlands) Cemetery. (CWG)


PTE. JAMES FRASER. Seaforths
James Fraser – age 36 – Private (266822) 8th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
James was employed in the office of the “Southern Reporter” when he enlisted and as Private (4197) he joined the 1/6th Seaforths in France before transferring to the 8th Battalion.
Born 1881 in Hopeman, Duffus, Morayshire. Son of the late Alexander and Betsy (Murdoch) Fraser formerly of High Street, Elgin, Morayshire. Husband of Mary Cook (Lawrie) Fraser of 99 High Street, Galashiels who he married in 1909 in Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 22 August 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial Belgium.

L-CPL. GEORGE FRIER. Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders
George Frier – age 22 – Lance Corporal (S/12110) 1/7th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
George had served his apprenticeship in the Bank of Scotland in Galashiels and he enlisted there in June 1915. He was posted to the 14th Argylls but was wounded and then joined the 1/7th Battalion.
Born 1895 in Antrim, Ireland. Son of James and Jane (Brownlee) Frier of 10 Hall Street, Galashiels.
Died of Wounds on 24 March 1918 and buried in Doullens Communal Cemetery Extension No.1, Somme, France.
Also named on the Bank of Scotland memorial in Edinburgh.

PTE. ROBERT FRIER. King's Own Scottish Borderers

Robert Frier – age 34 – Private (201541) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
In 1901 Robert was cycle engineer in Galashiels. He enlisted in the 8th King's Royal Irish Hussars in January 1902 and joined the15th King's Hussars in India in January 1903. He returned to the UK in November 1909 and transferred to the Army Reserves in January 1910. He became a postman in December 1910 and was working in Stow, Midlothian, but no longer a reservist, when he enlisted. He joined his battalion in Egypt as Private (8650) and served in Palestine where he was killed.
Born 1882 in Galashiels. [Ladhope] Son of James and Jane (Brownlee) Frier of 10 Hall Street, Galashiels. Husband of Christina Binnie (Mann) Frier of Stow Brae, Stow, Midlothian who he married in 1914 in Stow.
Missing in Action on 18 April 1917 and named on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.
Also named on the Stow Parish War Memorial.


L-CPL. PERCIVAL FRIER. King's Own Scottish Borderers
Percy Bowman Frier – age 25 – Lance Corporal (28599) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Percy was employed at the Wilderbank Mill when he enlisted as Private (7754) in the 4th KOSB. He was posted to the 1st KOSB in France in November 1916 but died three months later in the 2/2nd London Casualty Clearing Station at Meaulte near Albert.
Born 1892 in Galashiels. Son of William and Isabella (Bowman) Frier of 37 Woodside Place, Galashiels.
Died of Wounds on 7 February 1917 and buried in Grove Town Cemetery, Meaulte, Somme, France.

LT. CHARLES GARDINER. King's Own Scottish Borderers
Charles Gardiner – age 36 – Lieutenant, 4th Battalion attached to the 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Charles was a partner in the firm of Edward Gardiner & Sons, woollen manufacturers of Selkirk. He was commissioned in the KOSB in November 1915 and promoted in July 1917.
Born 1883 in Old Macher, Aberdeen. Son of the late Edward Gardiner (died 1914) and Margaret (Johnstone) Gardiner of Langhaugh House, Galashiels.
Husband of Gladys Mary (Morrison) Gardiner of Lealands, Galashiels and of 68 Middle Road, Bournemouth who he married in 1911 in Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 25 April 1918 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.


PTE. WILLIAM GASS. Highland Light Infantry
William Graham Gass – age 27 – Private (28034) 18th Battalion (4th Glasgow) Highland Light Infantry.
William enlisted as Private (22542) in the Royal Scots Fusiliers but he was posted to the HLI in France.
Born 1890 in Dumfries. Son of John and Mary (Graham) Gass of 26 Stirling Street, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 19 August 1917 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.

John Gavin – age 35 – Bombardier (365224) 269th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery.
Born 1882 in Galashiels. Son of John and Mary (O'Reilly) Gavin of Gasworks Cottages, Galashiels. Husband of Mary Agnes (Millar) Gavin who he married in 1911 in Galashiels.
Died of Wounds on 29 September 1917 and buried in Locre Hospice Cemetery, Belgium.


PTE. JOHN GETHIN. Royal Scots
John Gethin – age 27 – Private (40475) 1/9th (Highlanders) Battalion, Royal Scots.
Born 1891 in Galashiels. Son of the late John Gethin (died 1912) and of the late Helen (Judge) Gethin (died 1915) formerly of Bridge Street, Galashiels.
Husband of Catherine (Swinton) Gethin of 8 St. Michael's Wynd, Peebles who he married in 1915 in Peebles.
Missing in Action on 12 April 1918 and named on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Peebles War Memorial.


PTE. FRANK GIBSON. Camerons
Frank Gibson – age 31 – Private (S/15374) 5th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Frank enlisted in Galashiels in November 1914 and joined the 1st Camerons in France in March 1915. He had transferred to the 5th Camerons by June 1917.
Born 1887 in Whitsome, Berwickshire as Abram Gibson. Son of George and Margaret (Waddell) Gibson of Whitsome.
Missing in Action on 23 March 1918 and named on the Pozieres Memorial, Somme, France.
Also named on the Galashiels East Church memorial, and on the Whitsome Parish War Memorial as Abram Gibson.


PTE. JAMES GIBSON. Camerons
James Gibson – age 28 – Private (S/17969) 1st Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
James was a moulder when he enlisted in April 1915. He was posted to his battalion in France in July 1915 but he was killed three months later at Loos.
Born 1888 in Galashiels. Son of the late Margaret (Henderson) Gibson (died 1909) and of James Gibson of 30 Scott Street, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 13 October 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.

PTE. DAVID A. GILDAY. Royal Scots
David Archibald Gilday – age 25 – Private (201391) 1/4th Battalion (Queen's Edinburgh Rifles) Royal Scots.
David was a rubber worker when he enlisted as Private (4603) in Edinburgh in April 1916. He joined his battalion in Egypt in October 1916 and served in Palestine where he was killed near Gaza. Although his burial details were recorded his grave was lost.
Born 1892 in Galashiels. Son of Patrick and Mary (Archibald) Gilday of 2 Wardlaw Terrace, Edinburgh. His brother Hugh Gilday lived at 83 Overhaugh Street, Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 12 November 1917 and named on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.


PTE. THOMAS GOODSIR. King's Own Scottish Borderers
Thomas Goodsir – age 19 – Private (28006) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Born 1899 in Galashiels. Son of Peter and Elizabeth Melrose (Mann) Goodsir of Abbotsford Road, Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 13 June 1918 and buried in La Kreule Military Cemetery, Hazebrouck, France.

and his cousin – Peter and Alexander were brothers

PTE. THOMAS GOODSIR. Canada
Thomas Goodsir – age 21 – Private (29551) 16th Battalion (Canadian Scottish) Canadian Infantry.
Thomas had served his apprenticeship in the Galashiels branch of the Royal Bank of Scotland before he emigrated to Canada where he joined the Royal Bank of Canada in November 1912. He was working in the East End Branch in Vancouver, British Columbia when he enlisted in the 72nd Seaforth Highlanders of Canada in August 1914. He re-enlisted for overseas service at Valcartier Camp in Ontario and sailed with the 16th Battalion in October 1914. They moved to France in February 1915 and then to the Ypres salient where Thomas was killed at St. Julien.
Born 1894 in Galashiels. Son of Alexander and Elizabeth Jane (Davidson) Goodsir of 37 Bank Street, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 22 April 1915 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Royal Bank of Canada War Memorial in Montreal.

Robert Gordon – age 32 – Second Lieutenant, 99th Company, Machine Gun Corps.
Robert served a weaving apprenticeship in his father's tweed manufacturing business at Rosebank Mill in Galashiels. He enlisted as Private (3096) in the 1/9th (Highlanders) Battalion of the Royal Scots and joined the battalion in France in May 1915. He was commissioned in the Gordon Highlanders in June before being posted to the MGC.
Born 1883 in Galashiels. Son of Robert and Jeannie (Hendry) Gordon of Ryefield, Galashiels.
Died of Wounds on 4 December 1916 and buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, France.

Charles Grant – age 20 – Gunner (193386) "C" Battery. 51st Brigade, Royal Field Artillery.
Born 1897 in Galashiels. Son of the late Thomas Grant of Stanley Street, Galashiels (died 1909) and of Elizabeth (Macauley) Grant of 36 Montgomery Street, Edinburgh.
Missing in Action on 29 April 1918 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.

GEORGE GRANT. Royal Navy
George Donald Grant – age 17 – Gunner (RMA/14651) H.M.S. Defence. Royal Marine Artillery.
George was a farm labourer when he enlisted in July 1915 and was serving on the Armoured Cruiser “Defence” during the battle of Jutland in the North Sea when she was hit by salvoes of shells from ships of the German Fleet causing the magazines to explode.
Born 1898 in Galashiels. Son of the late Lewis Grant and of the late Isabella (Laidlaw) Grant (both died in 1906) formerly of Hall Street, Galashiels.
His oldest brother, David, was at Corporation Buildings, Langholm, Dumfriesshire.
Missing in Action/Lost at Sea on 31 May 1916 and named on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire.
Also named on the Lilliesleaf Parish War Memorial in Roxburghshire.

PTE. THOMAS GRANT. DRAGOON GUARDS. Cavalry

Thomas Laidlaw Grant – age 27 – Private (2218) 3rd (Prince of Wales's) Dragoon Guards
Thomas had been in the army for seven years and in 1911 was serving as Private (2212) with the 6th Dragoon Guards (Carabiniers) in South Africa. At the outbreak of war they were based in Canterbury and moved to France on 16 August 1914. Thomas was wounded at the Aisne in September and he was evacuated home. When he recovered he was posted to the 3rd Dragoon Guards in August 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1889 in Galashiels [Ladhope] as Thomas Grant. Son of the late Lewis Grant and of the late Isabella (Laidlaw) Grant (both died in 1906) formerly of Hall Street, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 27 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.


PTE. ROBERT E. GRAY. Camerons
Robert Easton Gray – age 25 – Private (17968) 6th Battalion Cameron Highlanders.
Robert returned from Canada to enlist and he landed with his battalion at Bolougne in July 1915. He was wounded at the Somme in August 1916 and evacuated to hospital in Perth. At the end of the year he married his wife Jessie and returned to France. He died in the St. John's Ambulance Brigade Hospital at Etaples.
Born 1891 in Hawick, Roxburghshire. Son of John Henderson Gray and of the late Margaret (Easton) Gray of 6 St. John Street, Galashiels. Husband of Jessie Mary “Linty” (McCartney) Gray of Douglas Bank and of Jericho Cottage, Locharbriggs, Dumfries who he married in 1916 in Dumfries.
Died of Wounds on 12 April 1917 and buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Locharbriggs War Memorial in Dumfries and on the Hawick Roll of Honour.

PTE. THOMAS GRAY. Canada
Thomas Gray – age 39 – Private (183675) 31st Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
Thomas was a farmer when he enlisted at Stettler, Alberta in November 1915. He sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia in May 1916 and joined his battalion in France in August but a month later he suffered multiple wounds and, after treatment in hospital in Rouen, he was evacuated to the Scottish National Red Cross Hospital in Glasgow in October. After he had recovered Thomas rejoined his battalion in April 1917 but he was killed three months later.
Born 1879 in Galashiels. Son of the late Archibald Gray (died 1913) and of Jane (Scott) Gray of 19 Trinity Street, Hawick, Roxburghshire.
Killed in Action on 10 July 1917 and buried in Fosse No.10 Communal Cemetery Extension, Sains-En-Gohelle, France.
Also named on the Galashiels East Church memorial, on the Hawick Roll of Honour and on the Stettler War Memorial.


P.O. WILLIAM C. GRAY. Royal Naval Reserve
Not listed by CWGC - not eligible.
William Clark Gray – age 21 – Able Seaman, S.S. Quentin, Merchant Marine.
William's father had for many years operated an aerated water business in Channel Street, Galashiels and his son was a well known local athlete, gymnast and boxer. William died when he fell from the main top mast into the hold of the cargo ship “Quentin” in Rotterdam Port.
Born 1895 in Hawick, Roxburghshire. Son of William Clark Gray and of Jane or Jeannie Grant (Farquhar) Gray of 25 McDonald Road, Edinburgh.
Died on 1 March 1917.


PTE. JOHN GREEN. King's Own Scottish Borderers
John Green – age 23 – Private (6495) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John enlisted at the outbreak of war and joined the 2nd KOSB in France in September 1914. Later he served with the 1st and 6th Battalions.
Born 1894 in Galashiels. Son James and Margaret (Roebuck) Green of Low Buckholmside, Galashiels.
Died of Wounds on 23 August 1917 and buried in Hermies British Cemetery, France.

PTE. ELLIOT GRIEVE. Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders
Elliot Grieve – age 20 – Private (S/14994) 10th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Elliot enlisted in the Argylls in November 1915.
Born 1896 in Galashiels. Son of the late Adam Grieve (died 1906) and of Margaret (Chambers) Grieve of 14 Roxburgh Place, Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 12 October 1916 and buried in Warlencourt British Cemetery, France.


PTE. JAMES W. GRIEVE. Canada
Note: James gave his birth details as 20 August 1890 in Galashiels when he enlisted but he was born on that date in Gordon Village in Berwickshire.
James Wyllie Grieve – age 26 – Private (234402) 44th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
James was farming at Monominto, Manitoba when he enlisted in Winnipeg in March 1916. He sailed with the 203rd Battalion from Halifax, Nova Scotia in October 1916 and was posted to the 44th in France in April but about three weeks later he was fatally wounded and he died in the 22nd Casualty Clearing Station at Bruay.
Born 1890 in Gordon Village, Berwickshire. Son of James and Isabella (Wyllie) Grieve of 715 Goulding Street and of 499 Basswood Place, Winnipeg.
In 1895 the family were at 32 Livingston Place, Galashiels. By 1901 they had moved to Edinburgh and by 1906 they were in Manitoba.
Died of Wounds on 12 May 1917 and buried in Bruay Communal Cemetery Extension, France.

James Hair – age 19 – Private (16729) 1st Battalion, Scots Guards.
James was a young child when the family moved from Galashiels to Edinburgh.
Born 1898 in Galashiels. Son of Thomas and Agnes Hall (Murray) Hair of Edinburgh.
Killed in Action on 10 March 1918 and buried in Fampoux British Cemetery, France.


PTE MATTHEW HALDANE. Camerons
Matthew Finlayson Haldane – age 25 – Private (S/14326) 7th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
The family moved from Halliburton Place in Galashiels just after Matthew was born, initially to Northumberland and, by 1901, to Edinburgh. Matthew enlisted there and landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915 but he was killed two months later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1890 in Galashiels. [Ladhope] Son of William and Mary (Finlayson) Haldane of 5 Sciennes, Edinburgh.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.

PTE. EDWIN G. HALIBURTON. South Africa
Edwin Galletly Haliburton – age 17 – Private (13052) 2nd Regiment, South African Infantry.
Edwin was an outfitter and claimed to be 18 and a half years old when he enlisted in March 1917. He sailed from Cape Town and joined his regiment in June.
Born 1900 in Melrose, Roxburghshire. Son of William and Mary (Cornish) Haliburton of "Galahill," 5c, Ritson Road, Durban, South Africa who had married in 1891 in Galashiels. Grandson of the late James Cornish of Balmoral Place, Galashiels.
Died of Wounds on 24 September 1917 and buried in Mendinghem Military Cemetery, Belgium.


PTE. ADAM HALL. Royal Army Veterinary Corps
Adam Hall – age 34 – Private (SE/16324) Army Veterinary Corps.
Adam had been a middle distance runner in his youth but his attempts to enlist were rejected as medically unfit. However his expertise with horses led to his Special Enlistment in the AVC but about three weeks after leaving Galashiels he contracted pneumonia and he died in the Royal Herbert Military Hospital at Woolwich, London.
Born 1879 in Galashiels. [Ladhope] Son of Adam Hall (died 1913) and Janet Shiel (Wood) Hall (died 1910) formerly of King Street, Galashiels.
Died on Service on 27 April 1916 and buried in Galashiels (Eastlands) Cemetery. (CWG)


S.SGT. JAMES R. HALL. Royal Field Artillery
James Redpath Hall – age 24 – Fitter Staff Sergeant (88487) "D" Battery. 125th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery.
James spent his childhood in Galashiels but by 1901 the family had moved to Edinburgh. He landed in France with his Battery as part of the 37th Division in July 1915. James was killed in an accident.
Born 1891 in Galashiels. [Ladhope] Son of James and Mary (Rutherford) Hall of High Buckholmside, Galashiels and of 119 Easter Road, Edinburgh.
Died on Active Service on 7 February 1916 and buried in Foncquevillers Military Cemetery, France.

PTE. FRANCIS HALLIDAY. King's Own Scottish Borderers
Frank Halliday – age 20 – Private (12186) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Frank enlisted in August 1914 and landed with his battalion at Boulogne in May 1915 but he was killed four months later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1895 in Galashiels as Francis. Son of the late Mary (Oliver) Halliday (died 1911) and of James Halliday of 7 Park Street, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.

SGT. WILLIAM HALLIDAY. Gordons

William Halliday – age 27 – Lance Sergeant (10185) 2nd Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
William, aged 18, was working in a tweed mill in Galashiels when he enlisted in November 1906. He joined the 1st Gordons in March 1907 and served in India before joining the 2nd Battalion in Egypt in December 1908. At the outbreak of war they returned to the UK and landed at Zeebrugge in Belgium in October 1914. William was wounded at Ypres later that month and evacuated home. He rejoined his battalion in March 1915 but was killed at Festubert five months later. He was buried there but was re-interred at Cuinchy after the war.
Born 1888 in Galashiels. [Ladhope] Son of the late Mary (Oliver) Halliday (died 1911) and of James Halliday of 7 Park Street and of 46 Overhaugh Street, Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 26 May 1915 and buried in Guards Cemetery, Windy Corner, Cuinchy, France.


PTE. RICHARD HANDYSIDE. King's Own Scottish Borderers
Richard Handyside – age 21 – Private (6904) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Richard was a police constable, living at 75 High Buckholmside, Galashiels, when he enlisted in September 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1894 in Wilton, Hawick, Roxburghshire. Son of Richard Lillico Handyside and of Janet (Murray) Handyside of 10 Earle Street, Hawick.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Hawick Roll of Honour.

PTE. JOHN HARDIE. King's Own Scottish Borderers
John Hardie – age 37 – Private (7251) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John had served with the 3rd Royal Scots in the South African War and he enlisted in the KOSB Reserve in August 1914. He was working in Buckholmside Skin Works in Galashiels when he was posted to his battalion in December 1914 but he was killed three months later near Ypres.
Born 1877 in Coldstream, Berwickshire. Son of Annie Hardie of 72 High Buckholmside, Galashiels and of 9 Greenside Place, Edinburgh.
Missing in Action on 26 March 1915 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.


PTE. JOHN S. HARDIE. King's Own Scottish Borderers
John Smith Hardie – age 22 – Private (6511) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB and was mobilised in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1893 in Galashiels. Son of John and Jemima (Smith) Hardie of 1 Rosebank Place and of 44 Wilderhaugh, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.


L-CPL. W. HARDIE. Royal Highlanders (Black Watch)
William Hardie – age 30 – Lance Sergeant (S/4761) 9th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
In 1891&1901 William was living with his widowed father at his grandparents' home in Melrose, Roxburghshire and in 1911 he was a footman in South Kensington, London. He was a butler in Newton Mearns when he enlisted in Glasgow and he landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915 but he was killed two months later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1886 in Stow, Midlothian. Son of the late Betsy (Anderson) Hardie (died 1888) and of Christopher Hardie of Colmslie, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.

PTE. DAVID HARKNESS. Royal Scots
David Harkness – age 22 – Private (27830) 16th Battalion (2nd Edinburgh) Royal Scots.
The battalion landed at Le Havre in January 1916 and fought its first battle on the Somme six months later.
Born 1894 in Peebles. Son of the late David Harkness (died 1913) and of Margaret (Cook) Harkness of 13 Halliburton Place, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 1 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Peebles War Memorial.


PTE. THOMAS HART. Royal Scots

Thomas Hendry – age 25 – Private (9674) 1st Battalion, Royal Scots.
Thomas was a brass moulder when he enlisted in Edinburgh in August 1906. He served in India from January 1909 until the battalion left to returned to England in October 1914. He transferred to the 3rd Reserve Battalion in December and returned to the 1st Battalion in Belgium in March 1915.
Thomas was killed six weeks later.
Born 1889 in Galashiels as Thomas Hart. Son of James Hart of Darnick, Melrose, Roxburghshire and of Margaret Allan Short of Galabank Street, Galashiels. Margaret married Thomas Hendry in 1898 in Leith, Edinburgh and lived at 6 Northcote Street and at 55 Haymarket Terrace, Edinburgh.
Died of Wounds on 22 April 1915 and buried in Bedford House Cemetery, Belgium.


PTE. JOHN HASTIE. Royal Highlanders (Black Watch)
John Hastie – age 35 – Private (S/14812) 12th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) transferred as Private (2629) to the Scottish Command Labour Centre, Labour Corps.
John was a wool spinner. He died of pneumonia in the Queen's Barracks Hospital in Perth.
Born 1884 in Galashiels. [Ladhope] Son of William and Isabella (Finlay) Hastie of 21 Low Buckholmside, Galashiels.
Died on Service on 26 May 1919 and buried in Perth (Jeanfield and Wellshill) Cemetery, Perthshire. (CWG)

PTE. JAMES HAY. King's Own Scottish Borderers
James Scott Hay – age 17 – Private (6601) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was a millworker when he enlisted in the KOSB Special Reserve in August 1913. He was posted to the 2nd in Belgium in December 1914 but he was killed at Ypres just over a week later.
Born 1897 in Galashiels as James Scott Tait. Son of Janet (Tait) Hay and step-son of George Hay of 33 Hunter Square, Galashiels and of 2 Gullan's Close, Holyrood Road, Edinburgh who married in 1900 in Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 15 December 1914 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.


PTE. ROBERT W. HEATLIE. Royal Scots
Robert Walter Heatlie – age 20 – Private (350262) 1/9th (Highlanders) Battalion, Royal Scots.
Robert's father had been a tailor in Galashiels in 1891 before he married in Edinburgh in 1894. Robert enlisted in Edinburgh and joined his battalion in France in December 1915. He died in the 42nd Stationary Hospital in Amiens.
Born 1897 in St. George, Edinburgh. Son of Walter Dalgliesh Heatlie and of Margaret (Thompson) Heatlie of 19 Slateford Road, Edinburgh.
Died of Wounds on 27 November 1917 and buried in St. Pierre Cemetery, Amiens, Somme, France.


2ND.LT. A. HUBERT M. HENDERSON. King's Own Scottish Borderers
Andrew Hubert Millin Henderson – age 20 – Second Lieutenant, 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Andrew was educated at St. Mary's School in Melrose, Roxburghshire and at the Edinburgh Institution (now Stewart's Melville College) before becoming a student of medicine at Edinburgh University in 1913. He was a Sergeant and Lieutenant in the 1st Highland Cadet Battalion of the Royal Scots from 1911 to May 1913 when he gained a commission in the Territorial 4th KOSB. Andrew landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1895 in St. Andrew, Edinburgh. Son of Dr. Percy James Henderson, M.B. and of Hannah Jane or Annie (Millin) Henderson of 9 Church Street, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the St. Mary's School memorial, on the Edinburgh Institution and Edinburgh University Rolls of Honour, and on the Edinburgh Old College memorial.
