Three sons of Peter and Minnie (Wright) Dick of Galapark Road, Galashiels. The family emigrated to join their father at Oakburn, Manitoba in June 1912.

PTE. GEORGE DICK. Canada
George Dick – age 19 – Private (718297) 1st Battalion, Canadian Mounted Rifles.
George was farming at Vista, Manitoba when he enlisted at Oakburn in January 1916. He sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia with the 107th (Timber Wolf) Battalion in September 1916 and was posted to the 1st CMR in France in December 1916. George died of multiple gun shot wounds in the 24th General Hospital in Etaples.
Born 1898 in Galashiels.
Died of Wounds on 12 April 1917 and buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, France.


SGT. JOHN DICK. M.M. Canada
John Dick, Military Medal – age 25 – Sergeant (1000883) 43rd Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
John had served his apprenticeship in Bank Street, Galashiels and was a barber at Shoal Lake, Manitoba when he enlisted there in March 1916. He sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia with the 226th (Men of the North) Battalion in December and was posted to the 43rd Battalion in France in August 1917. He was promoted to Corporal and to Sergeant in August 1918 and was awarded a MM. John was killed by shell-fire near Tilloy.
Born 1892 in Galashiels. Husband of Mary Ellen (Russell) Dick of Shoal Lake, Manitoba who he married in 1916 at Shoal Lake.
Killed in Action on 1 October 1918 and buried in Crest Cemetery, Fontaine-Notre Dame, France.


PTE. WILLIAM R. DICK. Canada
Not listed by CWGC.
William Robert Dick – age 23 – Private (2383180) 1st Depot Battalion, Manitoba Regiment.
William was farming with his father at Oakburn, Manitoba when he received his draft papers and he reported at Winnipeg on 7 May 1918 where he was found to be medically unfit for active service and he was discharged. However during the trip he contracted a severe cold which developed into pneumonia and he died in the Shoal Lake Hospital.
Born 1895 in Galashiels.
Died on 21 May 1918 and buried in McLean Cemetery, Shoal Lake, Manitoba.

The brothers are also named on the War Monument which was erected in 1952 in Shoal Lake, in the Rural Municipality of Yellowhead, Manitoba.

PTE. THOMAS DICKSON. Scots Guards
Thought to be:
Thomas Dickson – age 33 – Private (2667) 2nd Battalion, Scots Guards.
Thomas was educated at Musselburgh Academy before enlisting. He served in the South African War from 1899 to 1902. He was a mason in Musselburgh until, as a reservist, he was mobilised in August 1914 and he landed with his battalion at Zeebrugge in October 1914. He was killed by a sniper at Loos.
Born 1881 in Lauder, Berwickshire as Thomas Rutherford Dickson. Son of the late Alexander Dickson (died 1911) and of Violet (Rutherford) Dickson of Morn Street, Alyth, Perthshire and of "Tearo", Morebattle, Roxburghshire.
Missing in Action on 29 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Morebattle Parish War Memorial, on the Lauder War Memorial and on the Alyth Parish War Memorial in Perthshire.


PTE. WILLIAM H. DICKSON. Seaforths
William Henry Dickson – age 21 – Private (S/9681) 8th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
William joined his battalion in France in December 1915.
Born c.1896 in Inverness. (Source:1901 census but I cannot trace. SNWM has Ladhope)
Son of the late Jane (McGregor) Dickson (died 1903) and of John Dickson of 110 Halliburton Place, Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 23 April 1917 and buried in Guemappe British Cemetery, Wancourt, France.


SAP. LEO DILGER. Royal Engineers
Leopold Ignatius Dilger – age 28 – Pioneer (97633) 106th Field Company, Royal Engineers.
Leo enlisted in May 1915 and joined his company in France in December 1915.
Born 1887 in Galashiels as Ignatius Leopold Dilger. Son of the late Dionisius Dilger (died 1915) and of Amalia (Ganter) Dilger of Johnstone's Close, Galashiels. Husband of Margaret (Amos) Dilger of 29 Stirling Street, Galashiels who he married in 1910 in Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 29 July 1916 and buried in Sucrerie Military Cemetery, Colincamps, Somme, France.
Also named on the Our Lady and St Andrew R.C. Church memorial in Galashiels.
Leo's parents had both been born in Germany but had married in Glasgow in 1876 and Dionisius had a watchmaker's business in Galashiels for about 40 years. At the time of his death four of his sons were serving in the British Army.

CPL. JAMES DIVERS. Machine Gun Corps
James Divers – age 27 – Corporal (3785) 116th Company, Machine Gun Corps.
James enlisted in Galashiels as Private (22553) in the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) in October 1915 but transferred to the MGC in France.
Born 1890 in Duncrivie, Arngask, Perth & Kinross. (SNWM, 1891 census as Divers and GROS – Birth Register as Dyver)
Son of Patrick Dyver or Divers and of Annie (McGonigle) Divers of 34 Overhaugh Street, Galashiels. They had married in 1889 in Arngask as Dyver.
Killed in Action on 28 February 1917 and buried in Railway Dugouts Burial Ground (Transport Farm) Belgium.
Also named on the Our Lady and St Andrew R. C. Church memorial in Galashiels.


PTE. WILLIAM DOBSON. Royal Army Medical Corps
Not listed by CWGC - outside time limit. Thought to be:
William Dobson – age 48 – Private (64300) Royal Army Medical Corps.
William enlisted in Galashiels in August 1915 but was discharged a year later due to illness and was awarded a Silver War Badge (68572) He was a warehouseman when he died of bronchitis and pleurisy at Abbots Place, Galashiels.
Born 1874 in Galashiels. Son of the late James Dobson (died 1905) and of the late Mary (Chisholm) Dobson (died 1880) Brother of Helen Dobson of Hollybush, Galashiels who registered his death.
Died on 21 March 1922.


PTE. WILLIAM DOBSON. New Zealand
William Dobson – age 52 – Private (8/1185) Otago Regiment, New Zealand Infantry.
William had been a plumber in Galashiels before the family emigrated to Queensland, Australia in the early 1880's. He married there but he and his wife later moved to New Zealand. He had previously served with Roxburgh & Selkirk Volunteer Rifles, with a Volunteer Force in Queensland and was a member of the Wellington Highland Rifles when war broke out. He tried to enlist but was rejected so he joined the New Zealand Shipping Company and sailed on the Troopship “Ruapehu”. His enlistment was accepted on the ship in Alexandria, Egypt on 3 January 1915. The Regiment landed at Gallipoli on 25 April but William was killed a few weeks later. His remains were recovered in September 1915.
Born 1863 in Galashiels. Son of John Hardie Dobson (died 1906) and Catherine (Ure) Dobson of 13 Roxburgh Street, Galashiels and of Queensland, Australia. Husband of Mary (Yesberg) Dobson of 50 Daniell Street, South Wellington, New Zealand who he married in 1887 in Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia.
Killed in Action between 1 and 23 May 1915 and buried in Redoubt Cemetery, Helles, Gallipoli, Turkey.

John Dodds – age 38 – Private (S/8739) 1st Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
John enlisted in Leith, Edinburgh and joined his battalion in France in June 1915.
Born 1878 in Yarrow, Selkirkshire. Son of James Dodds and of Agnes (Barnson) Dodds (died 1896) of Hennel, Yarrow and of Leith.
Missing in Action on 3 September 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.


L-CPL. WILLIAM DODDS. King's Own Scottish Borderers
William Dodds – age 23 – Lance Corporal (8340) 4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers..
William was transferred as Private (42824) to the 14th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry when he arrived in France.
Born 1893 in Galashiels. Son of William and Margaret (Murray) Dodds of 84 Magdala Terrace, Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 24 April 1917 and buried in Fifteen Ravine British Cemetery, Villers-Plouich, France.


PTE. JAMES DOHERTY. King's Own Scottish Borderers
James Doherty – age 19 – Private (7217) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was a ploughman at Primside farm in Morebattle, Roxburghshire when he enlisted in Kelso and he landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1895 at Newstead, Melrose, Roxburghshire as Docherty.
Son of William and Margaret (McGlein) Docherty of Mossilee Farm, Caddonfoot, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Morebattle Parish War Memorial as Pte. J. DOCHERTY, KOSB.


GNR. WILLIAM DONALD. Royal Field Artillery
William Donald – age 23 – Gunner (51260) 42nd Brigade, Royal Field Artillery.
William had worked in the Botany Mill in Galashiels and had been a member of the Volunteer Rifles Band, however he was a coal miner when he enlisted in the RFA in August 1908. He landed with the 41st Battery of his Brigade as part of the 3rd Division in August 1914.
Born 1890 in Perth. Son of the late Ann Robb (Littlejohn) Donald (died 1897) and of William George Shaw Donald.
Missing in Action on 25 October 1914 and named on the Le Touret Memorial, France.

PTE. ANDREW DONALDSON. King's Own Scottish Borderers
Andrew Donaldson – age 24 – Private (6442) King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Andrew was employed at the Waverley Ironworks in Galashiels and he had joined the Territorial 4th KOSB in January 1912. He did not serve overseas and was discharged from the army due to illness in August 1916. Andrew was awarded a Silver War Badge (108301) but died in Galashiels three years later.
Born 1894 in Galashiels. Son of Alexander and Margaret (Lillie) Donaldson of Glebe Place, Galashiels.
Died on 5 March 1919 and buried in Galashiels (Eastlands) Cemetery. (CWG)


PTE. FRANK DONALDSON. R.M.L.I. Royal Navy
Frank McLean – age 25 – Private (CH/17765) H.M.S. Glory, Royal Marine Light Infantry.
In 1901 Frank, aged 8, was living with his aunt and uncle and their family in Galashiels. He enlisted in January 1913 and was serving on the battleship “Glory” at Archangel in northern Russia when he was killed in an accident.
Born December 1894 in Galashiels. Adopted son and nephew of Alexander and Joyce (McLean) Donaldson of 32 High Buckholmside, Galashiels.
Died on Active Service on 18 August 1918 and named on the Chatham Naval Memorial, Kent.

Thomas Donaldson – age 19 – Private (200464) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Thomas joined his battalion in Egypt as Private (6636) and served in Palestine where he became a prisoner of war.
Born 1898 in Galashiels. Son of Alexander and Joyce (McLean) Donaldson of 32 High Buckholmside, Galashiels.
Died on Service between 1 and 30 November 1917 and buried in Haidar Pasha Cemetery, Istanbul, Turkey.


PTE. WILLIAM B. DONALDSON. King's Own Scottish Borderers
William Bisset Donaldson – age 19 – Private (6591) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was employed at Rosebank Mill in Galashiels and had enlisted in the Territorial 4th KOSB in November 1913. He was mobilised in August 1914 and as part of the Signallers Section he landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was wounded during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah. William was evacuated to hospital in Egypt but he died there.
Born 1896 in Galashiels. Son of Peter Braid Donaldson and Isabella (Wilson) Donaldson of 14 Union Street and of 69 Kirkbrae, Galashiels.
Died of Wounds on 17 July 1915 and buried in Alexandria (Chatby) Military and War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.

James Douglas, Meritorious Service Medal – age 34 – Private (22527) 17th Battalion, Royal Scots.
James was awarded a MSM in 1918 “in recognition of valuable services rendered with the Forces in France.” He died in the 56th Casualty Clearing Station at Gezaincourt.
Born 1884 in Galashiels. Son of the late Barbara (Bertram) Douglas (died 1906) and of Archibald Douglas of 44 St Andrew Street, Galashiels.
Died of Wounds on 2 June 1918 and buried in Bagneux British Cemetery, Gezaincourt, Somme, France.


L-SGT. JAMES DOUGLAS. King's Own Scottish Borderers
James Douglas – age 29 – Lance Sergeant (200918) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
In 1911 James was a weaver in a woollen factory in Galashiels and was living at 46 Croft Street with Philip and Margaret Douglas. He was a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB and he joined his battalion in Egypt as Corporal (6745), serving in Palestine where he was fatally wounded.
Born 1888 in Galashiels. [Ladhope] as James Thompson. Son of Robert and Wilhelmina (Storrie) Thompson.
In 1891, aged 3, he was living with Philip and Margaret (Storrie) Douglas at Douglas Place, Galashiels and Mrs. Margaret Douglas of 75 Queen Street, Galashiels is named as his mother by CWGC
Died of Wounds on 14 November 1917 and buried in Ramleh War Cemetery, Israel.


PTE. ROBERT DOUGLAS. Royal Scots
Robert Douglas – age 39 – Private (1150) 1/8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Robert was a painter to trade. He enlisted at Haddington in East Lothian in August 1914 and he landed with his battalion at Le Havre in November 1914.
Born 1876 in Galashiels. [Ladhope] Son of the late Daniel Douglas (died 1883) and Margaret or Peggy (Ingles) Douglas of Market Street, Galashiels.
Husband of Christina Fox (Henderson) Douglas of Kendall Cottage, 14 Victoria Road, North Berwick, East Lothian who he married in 1897 in Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 16 May 1915 and named on the Le Touret Memorial, France.
Also named on the North Berwick War Memorial.


PTE. WALTER DOUGLAS. Gordons
Walter Douglas – age 19 – Private (S/20513) 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
Born 1899 in Galashiels. Son of the late Walter Douglas and of Jane (Graham) Douglas of 19 Kyle Street, Ayr.
Died of Wounds on 2 April 1918 and buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Ayr War Memorial


PTE. WILLIAM DOUGLAS. Highland Light Infantry
William Douglas – age 36 – Private (41833) 10th/11th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
William was an assistant cutter with the Co-operative Society when he enlisted as Private (8708) in the King's Own Scottish Borderers . He was posted as Private (29655) to the 2nd KOSB in France before transferring to the HLI.
Born 1882 in Galashiels. Son of George and Jessie (McNaughton) Douglas of Galashiels. Husband of Ellen (Maben) Douglas of 79 Meigle Street, Galashiels who he married in 1912 in Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 17 April 1918 and buried in Tourcoing (Pont-Neuville) Communal Cemetery, France.

CPL. WILLIAM DUFF. M.M. Royal Engineers
William Brown Duff, Military Medal – age 27 – Corporal (75954) Imperial Signal Company, Royal Engineers.
William was a Post Office telephone linesman when he enlisted in Galashiels in June 1915. He sailed for East Africa in February 1916 and was promoted in March 1917. William was awarded a M.M. in 1918 but was wounded in mid-April 1918 and died in hospital at Medo in Portuguese East Africa.
Born 1891 in Dundee. Son the late Isabella (Fairley) Duff (died 1913) and of John Doig Duff of 7 Braid Place, Edinburgh.
Died of Wounds on 22 April 1918 and buried in Pemba (formerly known as Porto Amelia) Cemetery, Mozambique.


PTE. JOHN DUNCANSON. King's Own Scottish Borderers
John Duncanson – age 21 – Private (6494) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John joined the 2nd KOSB in France in September 1914 but was wounded and was evacuated home. When he had recovered he joined the 1st KOSB at Gallipoli where he was killed.
Born 1894 in Galashiels. Son of George and Elizabeth (Gray) Duncanson of 78 Halliburton Place, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 28 June 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.

and his cousin (George and James were brothers, born in Tillicoultry Clackmannanshire)

PTE. ROBERT DUNCANSON. King's Own Scottish Borderers
Robert Duncanson – age 32 – Private (8128) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert was a butcher when he enlisted in Galashiels in December 1902. As a reservist he was mobilised at the outbreak of war and he landed with his battalion at Le Havre in August 1914 but he was killed a month later on the Aisne to the east of Paris.
Robert was reported to be the first man from Galashiels to fall.
Born 1882 in Galashiels. [Ladhope] Son of the late James Duncanson (died 1913) and Mary (Keddie) Duncanson of 34 High Buckholmside, Galashiels.
Husband of Janet Blair (Lees) Duncanson of 93 High Buckholmside, Galashiels who he married in 1913 in Edinburgh.
Missing in Action on 17 September 1914 and named on the La Ferte-Sous-Jouarre Memorial, Seine-et-Marne, France.

Thought to be:
James Easton – age 22 – Private (16811) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots.
James was a farm servant at Rawflat Farm, Ancrum, Roxburghshire when he enlisted in December 1914. He was posted to the 2nd Royal Scots in France in August 1915. James died in the 10th Casualty Clearing Station at Lijssenthoek.
Born 1893 in Hume, Berwickshire. Son of Walter and Mary (Temple) Easton of Rawflat Farm, Ancrum and of Haymount, Makerstoun, Roxburghshire.
Died of Wounds on 17 March 1916 and buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Ancrum Parish War Memorial.


LT. ANDREW EDGAR. M.C. King's Own Scottish Borderers
Andrew Edgar, Military Cross – age 22 – Company Sergeant Major (10885) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Andrew had been a railway wagon greaser before he enlisted in 1910. He was a Sergeant in the 2nd KOSB when he landed with the battalion at Le Havre in August 1914 and by January 1916, when he married, he was CSM in the 6th KOSB. He was awarded a M.C. in 1916 “For continuous gallantry and devotion to duty over a long period. His coolness under fire is remarkable. He has done excellent work on trenches and with wiring parties
Andrew was reportedly commissioned in the field but he was killed on the Somme six months later and the promotions was not confirmed.
Born 1893 in Galashiels. Son of Thomas Henry Ainsley Edgar and of Sarah (Kerr) Edgar of 26 Promenade, Portobello, Edinburgh.
The family had moved to Portobello where Thomas was a Railway Goods Guard by 1901.
Husband of Georgina Edgar (Scott) Edgar of 21 Dickson Street, Hawick, Roxburghshire who he married in Jan 1916 in Wilton, Hawick.
Missing in Action on 7 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Hawick Roll of Honour and on the Wilton Parish Church memorial.

REV. PIERCE J. EGAN. R.A.CH.D.
The Rev. Pierce John Egan – age 56 – Chaplain 4th Class, Army Chaplains' Department attached to the 1st Battalion, British West Indies Regiment.
The Rev. Egan had studied at Trinity College in Dublin from where he graduated M.A. in 1889. He held posts in Derry and in Edinburgh before he became rector of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Galashiels in 1913. He offered his services as a Chaplain in June 1915 and he went out to Egypt in February 1916 but contracted dysentery and was admitted to hospital in Alexandria in March. He died three weeks later.
Born c.1860 in County Clair, Ireland. Son of ?
Husband of Jessie Helen (Moody) Egan of The Rectory, Galashiels and of 7A, Spencer Road, Eastbourne who he married in 1899 in Belfast.
Died on Active Service on 6 April 1916 and buried in Alexandria (Chatby) Military And War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.

Andrew Elder – age 26 – Private (25978) 1st Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
Born 1890 in Galashiels. Son of Robert and Margaret (O'Niel) Elder of Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 11 January 1917 and named on the Basra Memorial, Iraq.
Also named on the Galashiels East Church memorial.

Robert Elder – age 19 – Private (51049) 1st Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
Robert was employed at the Waukrigg Mill in Galashiels when he enlisted.
Born 1898 in Galashiels. Son of James and Elizabeth (Graham) Elder of 13 Union Street, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 12 April 1918 and named on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Galashiels East Church memorial.

Henry Elliot – age 22 – Private (S/18066) 1st Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.

Killed in Action on 3 September 1916 and buried in Caterpillar Valley Cemetery, Longueval, Somme, France.


PTE. JAMES ELLIOT. King's Own Scottish Borderers
James Elliot – age 23 – Private (31812) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was living in Galashiels when he enlisted as Private (50610) in the Royal Army Medical Corps. At some point he transferred to the KOSB and was posted to the 1/4th Battalion.
Born 1895 in Coldstream, Berwickshire. Son of Janet (Houliston) Elliot (widow) of Park Street, Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 1 September 1918 and buried in H.A.C. Cemetery, Ecoust-St. Mein, France.


SGT. JOHN ELLIOT. Machine Gun Corps
John Elliot – age 26 – Sergeant (16901) 12th Battalion, Machine Gun Corps.
John enlist as Private (7231) and joined the 2nd KOSB in France in December 1914. At some point he transferred to the MGC.
Born 1891 in Galashiels as John Aiken Elliot. Son of Margaret Elliot of 58 Kirkbrae, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 26 March 1918 and named on the Pozieres Memorial, Somme, France.


BOMB. JOHN P. EMSLIE. Royal Garrison Artillery
John Paton Emslie – age 25 – Lance Bombardier (107024) "L" Anti-Aircraft Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery.
John was a fishmonger and poulterer in Bank Street, Galashiels when he enlisted.
Born 1892 in Galashiels. Son of George and Margaret (Paton) Emslie of 42 Channel Street, Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 30 August 1918 and buried in Bellacourt Military Cemetery, Riviere, France.

PTE. GEORGE FAIRBAIRN. Canada
George Wayness Fairbairn – age 24 – Private (8436) 2nd Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
George had emigrated to Canada in April 1913 and was working as a groom when he enlisted, together with his brother William, at Valcartier Camp, Ontario in September 1914. They sailed with their battalion from Quebec in October and landed in France in February 1915. Both were reported wounded and missing near Ypres in April 1915 but George had become a prisoner of war. He was held in a camp at Dulmen but became ill and was taken to hospital where he died of peritonitis in the Johanniter Kraukenhaus in Stendal. George was buried there but was re-interred in Berlin in the mid-1920's.
Born 1892 in Galashiels. Son of Robert and Isabella Nicol (Scott) Fairbairn of Wood Street, and of Langhaugh Cottages, Galashiels.
Died on Service on 27 February 1917 and buried in Berlin South-Western Cemetery, Germany.
Also named on the Almonte War Memorial in Ontario.

William Fairbairn – age 25 – Private (8437) 2nd Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
William was a warper in the mill town of Almonte in Ontario, Canada when he enlisted, together with his brother George, at Valcartier Camp, Ontario in September 1914. They sailed with their battalion from Quebec in October and landed in France in February 1915. Both were reported wounded and missing near Ypres in April 1915 but William had been killed.
Born 1890 in Galashiels. [Ladhope] as William Scott Fairbairn. Son of Robert and Isabella Nicol (Scott) Fairbairn of Wood Street, and of Langhaugh Cottages, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 22 April 1915 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Almonte War Memorial in Ontario.

Their father, Robert, aged 47, enlisted as Private (26347) in the Royal Scots in August 1915. He was transferred to the Labour Corps as Private (220104) in June 1917 and discharged from the army in January 1919.

PTE. PETER FAIRBAIRN. Royal Scots
Peter Fairbairn – age 40 – Private (34052) 16th Battalion (2nd Edinburgh) Royal Scots.
In 1911 Peter was working as a stone dyker and was living with his family at 95 Wood Street, Galashiels and in 1915 they were at Crosshouse in Manor Parish, Peeblesshire. Peter died of disease in the 55th Casualty Clearing Station at Tincourt.
Born 1876 in Galashiels. [Ladhope] Son of the late John Fairbairn (died 1900) and of the late Margaret Naysmyth (Kay) Fairbairn (died 1905) formerly of Magdala Terrace, Galashiels. Husband of Margaret (McLaren) Fairbairn of 212 Halliburton Place, Galashiels who he married in 1907 in Moulin, Perthshire.
Died on Active Service on 16 July 1917 and buried in Tincourt New British Cemetery, Somme, France.
Also named on Peebles and Manor Parish War Memorials.


CPL. ROBERT FAIRBAIRN. Royal Scots
Not listed by CWGC – outside time limit. Thought to be:
Robert Fairbairn – age 29 – Corporal (19761) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots.
Robert had served with the 16th and 13th Royal Scots and had been wounded previously before he was reported to have been made a prisoner of war in May 1918. He was repatriated and arrived in Dover in November 1918. He was working as a grocer in Galashiels when he died of tuberculosis at his home at Buckholm Mill Cottages, Galashiels.
Born 1894 in Galashiels. Son of the late George Wayness Fairbairn (died 1920) and of the late Jessie Paterson Fairbairn (died 1912) formerly of Buckholm Mill Cottages, Galashiels.
Died on 4 February 1924.
His death was register by his uncle Robert Fairbairn of Langhaugh Cottages, Galashiels, the father of George and William Fairbairn - detailed above.


PTE. FRANCIS FAIRHOLM. Camerons
Frank Fairholm – age 28 – Private (S/15544) 2nd Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Frank was a power loom tuner at the Botany Mills in Galashiels and boarded in Galapark Road when he enlisted in November 1914. He joined his battalion in March 1915 but he was killed two months later.
Born 1882 in Wilton, Hawick, Roxburghshire as Francis Omond Fairholm. Son of the late William Fairholm (died 1893) and of the late Ann (Omond) Fairholm (died 1898) formerly of Wilton, Hawick.
Hid brothers William, Anstruther, Joseph, Adam and his sister Mrs. Janet Richardson were named as his legatees.
Missing in Action on 11 May 1915 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.

L-CPL. PATRICK FAIRLEY. DURHAM L.I.
Patrick Fairley – age 35 – Private (4/9665) 10th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry.
In 1911 Patrick was a stoker for the Gas Company in Durham and was living with his wife and family at 39 Framwellgate. He joined his battalion in France in December 1915.
Born 1881 in Perth. Son of the late Mary (Maguire) Fairley (died 1895) and of John Fairley formerly of Stirling Street, Galashiels. Husband of Annie (Kinnear) Fairley who he married in 1902 in Durham.
Missing in Action on 16 September 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named in the Book of Remembrance in the DLI Memorial Chapel in Durham Cathedral.


PTE. JOHN FERGUSON. King's Own Scottish Borderers
John Ferguson – age 28 – Private (29554) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was a carter and was living at 9 Damside, Galashiels when he married in 1914.
Born 1888 in Ledgerwood, Berwickshire. Son of Hugh and Catherine (Airlie) Ferguson of Ledgerwood. Husband of Joan (Hall) Ferguson who he married in 1914 in Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 26 February 1917 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.


PTE. THOMAS FERGUSON. Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders
Thomas Ferguson – age 24 – Private (592) 1st Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Thomas was a van man with the St Cuthbert's Co-operative Society in Edinburgh when he enlisted in the Argylls in August 1910. He served in Malta from September 1911 before moving to India in November 1912 and he was in Dinapore in August 1914. The battalion returned to England and landed at Le Havre in December 1914 but Thomas was fatally wounded five months later and died in the 2nd Casualty Clearing Station at Bailleul.
Born 1891 in Galashiels. [Ladhope] Son of the late William Henderson Ferguson (died 1899) and of the late Agnes (Menelaws) Ferguson (died 1910) formerly of Johnstone's Close, Galashiels.
William had been a butcher in Edinburgh until the late 1880's when the family moved to Galashiels but in the late 1890's they returned to Edinburgh.
Thomas's brothers George, James, William, Alexander and Archibald and his sisters Agnes and Robina were named as his legatees.
Died of Wounds on 12 May 1915 and buried in Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension, Nord, France.

L-CPL. PETER FINNEY. King's Own Scottish Borderers
Peter Finney – age 45 – Lance Corporal (A/7775) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Peter was a National Reservist and was mobilised in September 1914. He joined the 2nd KOSB at Ypres in December 1914 but was invalided home suffering from “trench feet” in early 1915. After he had recovered he was posted to the 6th KOSB.
Born 1872 in Galashiels. Son of the late Mary (Mclaren) Finney (died 1912) and of the late Robert Finney (died 1915) of Dunsdalehaugh, Selkirk. Husband of Agnes (Affleck) Finney of 21 Halliburton Place, Galashiels who he married in 1895 in Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 3 May 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Selkirk Roll of Honour.


PTE. ADAM FLEMING. Highland Light Infantry
Adam Fleming – age 19 – Private (41762) 12th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
Adam was posted as Private (27052) to the King's Own Scottish Borderers in France but was transferred to the HLI.
Born 1897 in Galashiels. Son of James and Agnes (Rae) Fleming of 53 Douglas Street, Galashiels.
Died of Wounds on 22 May 1917 and buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, France.


PTE. GEORGE A. FLETCHER. Northumberland Fusiliers
Note: Most military records show his name as Alex. or Alexander and the family gravestone has G. Alex. P. Fletcher. His death was registered as Alexander.
George Alexander Fletcher – age 22 – Private (2273) 1/7th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers.
Alexander was an ironmonger when he enlisted at Alnwick in Northumberland and he landed with his battalion in France in April 1915. He was wounded near St. Julien and he was evacuated to the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle where he died.
Born 1892 Pathhead, Crichton, Midlothian as George Alexander Fletcher. Son of James Sinton Fletcher (died 1907) and of Georgina (Paterson) Fletcher of 72 High Street, Gallashiels and of Abbey Vale, Gattonside, Melrose, Roxburghshire.
Died of Wounds on 7 May 1915 and buried in Galashiels (Eastlands) Cemetery. (CWG)

John Fletcher – age 33 – Private (28656) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John had been a clerk with the Galashiels Co-operative Society and was a cashier with the Bonnybridge Co-operative Society in Stirlingshire when he enlisted.
Born 1885 in Galashiels as John Wilson Fletcher. Son of Thomas and Catherine (Wilson) Fletcher of Galashiels. Husband of Lily (Andreos) Fletcher of Falkirk Road, Bonnybridge who he married in 1910 in Bonnybridge.
Missing in Action on 29 June 1918 and named on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Bonnybridge War Memorial.


PTE. JAMES FORREST. King's Own Scottish Borderers
James Forrest – age 22 – Private (200446) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was employed at Wilderbank Mill in Galashiels and was a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB. He was mobilised as Private (6607) in August 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915. He then served in Egypt and Palestine.
Born 1895 in Galashiels. James Crombie Forrest and Betsy or Elizabeth (Wood) Forrest of 228 Galapark Road, Galashiels.
Died of Wounds on 23 November 1917 and buried in Jerusalem War Cemetery, Israel.


L-CPL. WILLIAM B. FOWLER. Australia
William Buchan Fowler – age 40 – Lance Corporal (1135) 45th Battalion, Australian Infantry.
William had previously served for 12 years with the Gordon Highlanders and had been in Australia since 1910. He was working as an engineering fitter when he enlisted in Kensington, New South Wales in October 1914 and he sailed with the 1st Battalion from Sydney that month. He landed at Gallipoli in April 1915 but was wounded and evacuated to hospital in Alexandria. He rejoined his battalion in July but due to illness was evacuated to hospital in Malta in November. He returned to Egypt for repatriation to Australia in January 1916 but after further medical treatment he sailed from Alexandria for England in June 1916 and joined the 45th Battalion in France in July 1917. William was killed a month later.
Born 1876 in Galashiels. [Ladhope] Son of the late James Fowler (died 1912) and of the late Mary (Buchan) Fowler (died 1908) of Galashiels. Husband of Janet (Dobson) Fowler of 137 Halliburton Place, Galashiels who he married in 1896 in Edinburgh while he was a Private in the 2nd Gordon Highlanders.
Missing in Action on 16 August 1917 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
