CAPT. WALTER F. COCHRANE. King's Own Scottish Borderers
Walter Francis Cochrane – age 42 – Captain, 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Walter was the managing director of the tweed manufacturer A. L. Cochrane & Brothers, at Netherdale Mill, Galashiels. He had a long association with the Territorial force having been commissioned in the Roxburgh and Selkirk Volunteer Rifles in February 1898. He was granted a Captaincy with the 4th KOSB in September 1914 and joined the battalion in Egypt in 1916. Walter served in Palestine where he was killed at Gaza.
Born December 1874 in Galashiels. Son of Archibald and Helen Brown (Duff) Cochrane of Abbotshill, Galashiels. Husband of Emma Mabel (Purdom) Cochrane of Kirklands, Galashiels who he married in 1906 in Hawick, Roxburghshire.
Killed in Action on 19 April 1917 and buried in Gaza War Cemetery, Palestine.


PTE. DAVID COCKBURN. King's Own Scottish Borderers
David Cockburn – age 38 – Private (201768) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
David was a wool mill worker when he enlisted and he landed as Private (7270) with the 6th KOSB at Boulogne in May 1915. At some point he transferred as Private (9407) to the 4th KOSB and was posted to the 1/5th KOSB Palestine where he was killed at Gaza.
Born 1878 in Galashiels. [Ladhope] Son of David and Euphemia (Phin) Cockburn of Wilderhaugh, Galashiels. Husband of Christina (Little) Cockburn of 63 High Buckholmside, Galashielswho he married in 1912 in Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 19 April 1917 and named on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.


SGT. GEORGE A. COCKBURN. King's Own Scottish Borderers
George Alexander Cockburn – age 21 – Sergeant (6666) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
George was a joiner in Galashiels when he re-enlisted in the Territorial 4th KOSB in May 1914. He had previously served for four years with the battalion. He was mobilised in August 1914 and was promoted to Sergeant in May 1915 just before he landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915. George was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1894 in Galashiels. Son of Alexander and Jane (Chalmers) Cockburn of 34 Croft Street, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.

PTE. GEORGE COLLINS. King's Own Scottish Borderers
George Collins – age 21 – Private (20952) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
George enlisted in July 1915 and joined the 7th KOSB in France in October 1915.
Born 1895 in Lauder, Berwickshire as George Collins Shiels.
Son of Jemima Middleton (Shiels) Riddle of Hunter Square, Galashiels. She married William Gordon Riddell in 1911 in Edinburgh.
Died of Wounds on 15 September 1916 and buried in Heilly Station Cemetery, Mericourt-L'Abbe, Somme, France.


2ND.LT. R. HOPE CONNOCHIE. King's Own Scottish Borderers
Robert Hope Connochie – age 24 – Second Lieutenant, 4th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers
Robert was employed at Tweed Mill, Galashiels when he enlisted as Private (1703) in the Lothians and Border Horse Yeomanry. He landed with his squadron in France in September 1915 and later served as Private (120335) until he was commissioned in the KOSB in September 1916.
Born 1893 in Galashiels. Son of Thomas Dixon Connochie, Veterinary Surgeon, and of Agnes Murray (Hope) Connochie of "Braeside", Gala Terrace, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 31 July 1917 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.


PTE. BENJAMIN COSSAR. Canada
Benjamin Cossar – age 27 – Private (171752) 3rd Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
Benjamin emigrated to Canada in April 1913 to join his brother Robert who had gone out a year before. He was a motor cycle engineer when he enlisted in Toronto, Ontario in August 1915 but he became ill and it was March 1917 before he sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia. Benjamin joined his battalion in France in May 1917 but he was killed at Passchendaele Ridge.
Born 1890 in Galashiels. [Ladhope] Son of the late Alexander Cossar (died 1905) and of Agnes Ferguson (Ednie) Cossar of 26 Kirkbrae, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 6 November 1917 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.

PTE. WILLIAM H. COWAN. King's Own Scottish Borderers
William Henderson Cowan – age 19 – Private (6529) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was a millworker when he enlisted in the Territorial 4th KOSB in March 1913. He was mobilised in August 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1896 in Galashiels. Son of William and Catherine (Murdoch) Cowan of 66 High Buckholmside, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.


PTE. ANDREW CRAIGHEAD. Royal Scots Fusiliers
Andrew Craighead – age 24 – Private (40804) 1st Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
Andrew was employed in the printing office of Craighead Brothers of Ladhope Vale, Galashiels when he enlisted in the Royal Scots. He was posted to the 1st RSF.
Born 1892 in Galashiels. Son of Andrew and Margaret (Fairbairn) Craighead of Scott Street and of Tweed Road, Galashiels,
Missing in Action on 26 September 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.


PTE. THOMAS CRANSTON. King's Own Scottish Borderers
Thomas Cranston – age 38 – Private (201889) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Thomas had served as Private (3169) with the KOSB in the South African War and was employed at the coal depot at the railway station. He enlisted in the 4th KOSB Reserve and was posted to the 2nd KOSB.
Born 1877 in Smailholm, Roxburghshire. Son of the late John (died 1885) and Mary (Wood) Cranston (died 1897) formerly of Victoria Street, Galashiels. Husband of the late Mary Elliot (Kerr) Cranston who he married in 1903 in Galashiels but who died on 4 January 1912 at 16 Bank Close, Galashiels during the birth of their son Robert.
His sister Mrs. Elizabeth (Wood/Cranston) Shiels was named as the guardian of his child.
Killed in Action on 16 August 1917 and buried in Artillery Wood Cemetery, Belgium.

PTE. EDWARD CRICHTON. Camerons
Not currently listed by CWGC but under review.
Edward's name was added to the Debt of Honour Register on 23 February 2023

Edward Crichton οΏ½ age 38 οΏ½ Private (220236) Cameron Highlanders.
Edward was an assistant gardener when he enlisted as Private (6733) in the 2/7th Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in October 1916. He was posted as Private (278267) to the Argylls in France in June 1916 and he was transferred to 7th Cameron Highlanders in August 1917. He was admitted to hospital in Danners with Trench Fever in January 1918 and joined the 5th Battalion in June. Edward was demobilised in October 1919 and discharged from the Army in March 1920. He was a tweed pattern weaver when he died of the effects of Trench Fever and Endocarditis in the Craigleith Hospital in Edinburgh.
Born 1883 in Castleton, Roxburghshire. Son of the late Sarah (Johnstone) Crichton of 54 Galabank Road, Galashiels (died 1907) and of James Crichton of 36 Island Street, Galashiels. Husband of Alice Pringle of 185 Magdala Terrace, Galashiels who he married in 1907 in Galashiels.
Died on 5 August 1921 and buried in Galashiels (Eastlands) Cemetery.

SGT. JAMES CRICHTON, King's Own Scottish Borderers

James Crichton οΏ½ age 35 οΏ½ Corporal (7480) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James had enlisted as Private (5386) in the KOSB in February 1897 and had spent 14 years in the army. He enlisted at the outbreak of war and landed with his battalion at Bolougne in May 1915 but he was fatally wounded during the battle at Loos.
Born 1877 in Kirkpatrick Fleming, Dumfriesshire. Son of the late Sarah (Johnstone) Crichton of 54 Galabank Road, Galashiels (died 1907) and of James Crichton of 36 Island Street, Galashiels.
Died of Wounds on 27 September 1915 and buried in Chocques Military Cemetery, France.


PTE. JOHN S. CROMBIE. King's Own Scottish Borderers
John Scott Crombie οΏ½ age 25 οΏ½ Private (6901) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was Secretary and Captain of the Gala Harriers Club and as a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB he was mobilised in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was fatally wounded three weeks later.
Born 1890 in Galashiels. [Ladhope] Son of John and Joanna (Scott) Crombie of 18 Scott Crescent, Galashiels.
Died of Wounds on 28 June 1915 and buried in Lancashire Landing Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey.

GNR. ROBERT CROSBIE. Royal Garrison Artillery
Thought to be:
Robert Crosbie – age 21 – Gunner (95859) 163rd Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery.
Robert enlisted at Galashiels in November 1915.
Born 1896 in Crossford, Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire. Son of Thomas and Margaret (Downie) Crosbie of Auchinraith Estate, Bothwell, Lanarkshire.
Killed in Action on 4 July 1917 and buried in Vlamertinghe New Military Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Pettinain Village War Memorial in Lanarkshire.


PTE. ALBERT CROSS. Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders
Albert Cross – age 22 – Private (S/2966) 2nd Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Albert was employed as a moulder when he enlisted in Glasgow in August 1914. He joined his battalion in France in November 1914.
Born 1893 in Galashiels. Son of the late Henry Cross (died 1911) and of Janet Gill (Weatherhead) Cross of 28 Stanley Street, Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 25 September 1915 and buried in Cambrin Churchyard Extension, France.


CSGT.MAJ. JAMES CROSSAN. King's Own Scottish Borderers
Note: All civil records spell the family name as Crosson.
James Crossan – age 42 – Sergeant (200340) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James had served in the South African War and was a Sergeant (6005) in the Territorial 4th KOSB. He was posted to the 1/4th KOSB in Egypt in December 1916 and was onboard the Troopship “Ivernia”, sailing from Marseilles to Alexandria, when she was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine UB-47 off Cape Matapan, Greece. Most of the troops survived and landed in lifeboats at Suda Bay, Crete. James then served in Palestine before moving with the battalion to France in April 1918.
Born 1876 in Selkirk as James Crosson. Son of the late Catherine (Fitzpatrick) Crosson (died 1885) and of the late James Crosson (died 1905) formerly of 22 Church Street, Galashiels. Husband of Christina Moore (Menzies) Crosson of 156 Halliburton Place, Galashiels who he married in 1902 in Galashiels.
Died of Wounds on 7 October 1918 and buried in Sunken Road Cemetery, Boisleux-St. Marc, France.
Also named on the Our Lady and St Andrew R.C. Church memorial in Galashiels.

William Renilson Crowe – age 24 – Private (42555) 1st Battalion, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers.
William enlisted as Private (S3/027847) in the Army Service Corps in November 1914 and went to France in December 1915. At some point he was transferred to the Inniskilling Fusiliers.
Born 1893 in Galashiels. Son of John and Jane (Dodds) Crowe of Bank Close, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 20 December 1917 and named on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval, France.


L-CPL. DONALD G. CRUIKSHANK. Highland Light Infantry
Donald Gordon Cruickshank – age 39 – Lance Corporal (42223) 16th Battalion (2nd Glasgow) Highland Light Infantry.
In 1911 Donald was a game keeper at Sunderland Hall, Selkirk. He enlisted in Galashiels as Private (7450) in the King's Own Scottish Borderers but was transferred to the HLI in France.
Born 1878 in Yetholm, Roxburghshire.
Son of Donald and Margaret (Mann) Cruickshank of Darnick, Melrose. Husband of Margaret Kerr (Cleghorn) Cruickshank who he married in 1907 in Selkirk. Margaret died in 1933 in Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 2 December 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium..
Also named on the Melrose War Memorial, on the Free Church memorial in Melrose and on the Darnick Village War Memorial together with his brother John of the Seaforth Highlanders who died on 5 August 1917.


L-CPL. WILLIAM CUNLIFFE. King's Own Scottish Borderers
William Cunliffe – age 25 – Lance Corporal (200483) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
At the time of the 1901 census William, aged 8, and his father, an ammonia maker, had arrived in Galashiels. His mother Jane and the other children, including the newborn Dorothy, were still in Oswaldtwistle in Lancashire living with Jane's parents.
William was a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB and as Private (6673) he was mobilised in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 and was wounded during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah. He then served in Egypt and in Palestine where he was fatally wounded.
Born 1892 in Oswaldtwistle, Blackburn, Lancashire. Son of William and Jane (Eccles) Cunliffe of 5 Larchbank Street, Netherdale, Galashiels.
Died of Wounds on 14 November 1917 and buried in Ramleh War Cemetery, Israel.

PTE. ANDREW CUNNINGHAM. Seaforths
Andrew Cunningham – age 19 – Private (203151) 7th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
Andrew was the youngest of eight brothers serving in the army and the only one to be killed.
Born 1898 in Galashiels. Son of the late Charlotte (Wilson) Cunningham (died 1906) and of Francis Cunningham of 33 Overhaugh Street, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 14 October 1918 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Our Lady and St Andrew R.C. Church memorial in Galashiels.


PTE. ARTHUR CUNNINGHAM. King's Own Scottish Borderers
Arthur Cunningham – age 21 – Private (6818) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Arthur was a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB and was mobilised in August 1914. He and his brother Walter landed with their battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but Arthur was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1894 in Wilton, Hawick, Roxburghshire.
Son of Walter and Elizabeth (Martin) Cunningham of 61 Lintburn Street and of 52 Meigle Street, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.

Walter was a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB and as Private (6857) he was mobilised in August 1914. He and his brother Arthur landed with their battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915. (see above) Walter was wounded during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah and he was evacuated to hospital in Perth. He re-joined the battalion in Egypt in May 1916 and served in Palestine where he was killed at Gaza.
Born 1892 in Wilton, Hawick, Roxburghshire. Son of Walter and Elizabeth (Martin) Cunningham of 61 Lintburn Street and of 52 Meigle Street, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 19 April 1917 and named on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.

Henry Cunningham – age 28 – Private (41184) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
Born 1890 in Galashiels. [Ladhope] Son of the late John Cunningham (died 1913) and Bridget (McGorral) Cunningham (died 1911) formerly of Bank Close, Galashiels.
Killed Action on 24 June 1918 and buried in Meteren Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Our Lady and St Andrew R.C. Church memorial in Galashiels.


PTE. ROBERT F. CUNNINGHAM, Canada
Robert Frier Cunningham – age 26 – Private (199092) 5th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
Robert's father had a drapery business in Galashiels for many years before the family emigrated to Canada in 1912. Robert was a weighman when he enlisted in Fort William, Ontario in March 1916. He sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia in June and joined his battalion in France in August but he died a month later in the 3rd Canadian Field Ambulance at Albert.
Born 1888 in Galashiels. [Ladhope] Son of Robert Frier Cunningham and of Eleanor (Graham) Cunningham of 245 Sherbourne Street Toronto. Husband of Eva (Gentle) Cunningham of 604 S. Syndicate Avenue, Fort William, Ontario who he married in 1914 in Fort William.
Died of Wounds on 26 September 1916 and buried in Albert Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France.


PTE. JOHN CURRIE. King's Own Scottish Borderers
John Currie – age 35 – Private (29649) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John had studied at the Glasgow School of Art and at the outbreak of war was an art teacher in Edinburgh. He was about to take up a post as Art Master at the Academy and Technical College in Galashiels when he was mobilised.
Born 1881 in Selkirk. Son of Thomas and Helen (Hogg) Currie of 85 Magdala Terrace, Galashiels. Husband of Alexi (Mitchell) Currie of 202 Galapark Road, Galashiels who he married in 1915 in Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 3 May 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.


BUGLER WILLIAM B. CURRIE. King's Own Scottish Borderers
William Bain Currie – age 20 – Private (6433) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB and was mobilised in August 1914. He landed with the battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 and was a stretcher-bearer during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah. He contracted dysentery and was evacuated to hospital in Malta where he died.
Born 1895 in Galashiels. Son of Thomas Speeden Currie and Annie (Bain) Currie of Old Gala House, Galashiels.
Died on Active Service on 29 October 1915 and buried in Pieta Military Cemetery, Malta.
Thomas Currie had served for many years in the Volunteer Rifles and from April 1908 in the Territorial 4th KOSB and was the Master Cook at the Headquarters in Galashiels until he was discharged from the army as Sergeant (6046) in November 1916.

PTE. ANDREW DALGLEISH. Royal Army Service Corps
Andrew Dalgleish – age 32 – Private (S4/094962) 17th Field Bakery, Army Service Corps.
Andrew was a baker living at 189 Magdala Terrace, Galashiels when he enlisted in May 1915. He went to France in January 1916 but died of broncho pneumonia in the 2nd Canadian Stationary Hospital.
Born 1887 in Dublin North, Ireland. Son of Andrew and Jane (Hughes) Dalgleish of Cannon Street, Selkirk and of 2 Rutland Road, Longwood, Huddersfield, Yorkshire. Andrew and Jane had married in 1877 in Selkirk.
Died on Active Service on 14 May 1918 and buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, France.


TPR. CHARLES R. DALGLIESH. Canada
Charles Rieve Dalgliesh – age 28 – Private (114809) Canadian Cavalry Brigade, Machine Gun Squadron.
Charles was a rancher at Nadeauville, Saskatchewan when he enlisted in the Canadian Mounted Rifles at Maple Creek in December 1914. He sailed from St. John, New Brunwick in November 1915 and was posted to the Royal Canadian Dragoons in France in May 1916 before being attached to the CCB Machine Gun Squadron in August. He remained as part of this unit for the rest of the war, Charles was hit by shrapnel from a stray shell while watering the horses at Castell Woods near Amiens and died in a nearby French Field Ambulance.
Born 1890 in Galashiels. Son of Charles Rieve Dalgliesh (died 1902) and Janet Cumming (Douglas) Dalgliesh (died 1917) formerly of 284 Galapark Road, Galashiels.
Died of Wounds on 1 April 1918 and buried in Namps-Au-Val British Cemetery, Somme, France.
Also named on the Nadeauville War Memorial.

L-CPL. J. DANIEL. D.C.M. Royal Highlanders (Black Watch)
James Dalgliesh Daniel, Distinguished Conduct Medal – age 25 – Lance Corporal (1731) Depot, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
By 1901 the family had moved from Halliburton Place, Galashiels to Kirkcaldy in Fife. James enlisted in the Black Watch in 1911 and was serving with the 2nd Battalion at Bareilly in northern India in August 1914. The battalion moved to France, landing at Marseilles on 12 October 1914.
James was awarded a DCM “For gallant conduct on 4th November, 1914, in carrying a wounded man into safety.” He was recommended for a second award for a similar action in 1915 but he died of the wounds he suffered during that event in the 3rd Southern General Hospital in Oxford.

PTE. WILLIAM T. DARLING. King's Own Scottish Borderers
William Temple Darling – age 40 – Private (22518) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
In 1901 William was working as a painter in Selkirk but later that year he emigrated to Boston, USA. He returned via New York in July 1915 to enlist and he was posted to the 2nd KOSB before he joined the 6th KOSB. William died of influenza and pneumonia in the Norfolk War Hospital, Thorpe, Norwich.
Born 1878 in Peebles. Son of the late Jane or Jean (Temple) Darling (died 1907) and of William Darling of 33 Queen Street, Galashiels.
Died on Service on 3 March 1919 and buried in Galashiels (Eastlands) Cemetery. (CWG)


PTE. ADAM D. DAVIDSON. King's Own Scottish Borderers
Adam Dalgleish Davidson – age 20 – Private (6619) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Adam was employed at Buckholm Mill in Galashiels when he enlisted in the Territorial 4th KOSB in December 1913. He was mobilised in August 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1895 in Galashiels. Son of the late Mabel (Dalgleish) Davidson (died 1912) and of Robert Davidson of 139 Halliburton Place, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.

Andrew Davidson – age 25 – Private (25941) 10th Battalion, Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment)
Andrew was a groom, employed in the Buckholmside Skinworks in Galashiels, when he enlisted in the Army Veterinary Corps as Horse Keeper/Private (3474) in January 1915 and he went to France that month. He was transferred to the West Riding Regiment in September 1917 and in November they moved to Italy. Andrew returned from leave in the UK in August 1918 but he was wounded at the River Piave and died in the 39th Casualty Clearing Station.
Born 1893 at Fairnington, Roxburgh. Son of the late Margaret (Patton) Davidson (died 1916) and of Andrew Davidson of 48 Market Street, Galashiels. Husband of Catherine (McLaren) Davidson of 123 High Buckholmside, Galashiels who he married in 1913 in Edinburgh.
Died of Wounds on 29 October 1918 and buried in Giavera British Cemetery, Arcade, Italy.

Missing in Action on 6 December 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.

George Davidson – age 25 – Private (200859) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
George was a bread checker with the Co-operative Society when he enlisted in 1914. He was serving with the KOSB at Inverkeithing in Fife when he married in September 1915 and as Private (7491) he joined the 1/4th KOSB in Egypt before serving in Palestine where he was wounded at Gaza.
Born 1893 in Galashiels. Son of William and Annie (Scott) Davidson of 15 Livingston Place, Galashiels. Husband of Amelia Maud (Rintoul) Davidson of 4 Greenbank Street, Galashiels who he married in 1915 in Edinburgh.
Killed in Action on 22 October 1918 and buried in Vichte Military Cemetery, Belgium.

James Scott Davidson – age 26 – Sapper (213982) 10th Field Company, Canadian Engineers.
James was a plumber, working in Detroit, Michigan, USA, when he crossed the border to enlist at Windsor, Ontario in February 1916. He sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia in May and spent almost a year with the Canadian Training Division in England before joining the 10th Field Company in France in March 1917.
Born 1891 in Galashiels. [Ladhope] Son of William and Annie (Scott) Davidson of 15 Livingston Place, Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 20 October 1917 and buried in White House Cemetery, St. Jean-Les-Ypres, Belgium.

James was living in Galashiels when he enlisted. He landed with the 6th KOSB at Boulogne in May 1915 but he was killed a year later while serving with the 7th KOSB.

Robert was a forester at Gala House, Galashiels and was a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB. He was mobilised in August 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1894 in Roberton, Roxburghshire as Robert Moffat Davidson. Son of Matthew and Catherine (Moffat) Davidson of Todshawhaugh, Borthwick Water, Roberton, of Billerwell, Bonchester Bridge, Hobkirk, and of 2 Weensland Terrace, Hawick, Roxburghshire.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Hobkirk Parish War Memorial in Bonchester Bridge.

George Henderson Davie – age 45 – Private (8494) King's Own Scottish Borderers.
In 1901 George was working in a coal mine at New Winton, East Lothian and the family was still there in 1911 but by 1914 they were at 181 Glendinning Terrace in Galashiels. He enlisted in January 1915 but was discharged due to illness and was awarded a Silver War Badge (491539) in January 1916. George died of tuberculosis at his home in Galashiels.
Born 1875 in Ormiston, East Lothian. Son of the late John Davie (died 1911) and of the late Margaret (Gillie) Davie (died 1906) formerly of Pencaitland, East Lothian. Husband of Barbara Jane (Harvey) Davie of 2 Ash Street, Galashiels who he married in 1897 in Innerleithen, Peeblesshire.
Died on 17 December 1920.


PTE. WILLIAM DAWSON. King's Own Scottish Borderers
William Dawson – age 33 – Private (200416) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB. As Private (6554) he joined his battalion in Egypt but at some point he was transferred to the 1st KOSB. William became ill and died in hospital.
Born 1887 in Galashiels. Son of William and Jane Ann (Bell) Dawson of 11 Wood Street, Galashiels. Husband of Mary (Hume) Dawson of Galashiels of 40 Livingston Place, Galashiels who he married in 1913 in Galashiels.
Died on Active Service on 4 October 1918 and buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, France.

James Deans – age 19 – Private (7030) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was employed on Chapel Farm, Lilliesleaf, Roxburghshire when he enlisted and he landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1896 in Westruther, Berwickshire as James Rutherford Deans. Son of David and Elizabeth (Rutherford) Deans of Easter Langlee, Galashiels and of Greenknowe, Gordon, Berwickshire.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.

John Hamilton Graham Deans – age 26 – Sergeant (S/9511) 1st Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
In 1912 John was an Honorary 2nd Lieutenant in the Transvaal Cadets at the King Edward School in Johannesburg and after joining the Standard Bank in Johannesburg he served with the South African Force in the German South West Africa campaign. He then sailed from Natal and arrived in Plymouth in June 1915 and enlisted in the Black Watch. John joined his battalion in France in August 1915.
Born c.1890 in Heidelberg, Transvaal, South Africa. Son of John and Elizabeth Elliot (Romanes) Deans of Bethal, Transvaal, South Africa (who had married in 1889 in Galashiels) and grandson of William Romanes of Croft Street, Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 25 September 1916 and buried in A.I.F. Burial Ground, Flers, Somme, France.
Also named on the M.O.T.H. (Memorable Order of the Tin Hats) Hall Roll of Honour in Heidelberg.

Born c.1895 in Heidelberg, Transvaal, South Africa. Son of John and Elizabeth Elliot (Romanes) Deans of Bethal, Transvaal, South Africa (who had married in 1889 in Galashiels) and grandson of William Romanes of Croft Street, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 12 October 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.

L-CPL. DAVID M. DICK. D.C.M. King's Own Scottish Borderers
David M. Dick – age 33 – Private (6550) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
David was a cabinet maker, living at 65 St Andrew Street, Galashiels and had been a member of the Roxburgh and Selkirk Volunteer Rifles when he enlisted as Private (872) in the Territorial Lothians and Border Horse Yeomanry in June 1908. He transferred at his own request to the 4th KOSB in June 1913 and became a drummer in the band. He was mobilised in August 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915. David was recommended for a Distinguished Conduct Medal for his actions as a stretcher-bearer in bringing in the wounded of the battle at Achi Baba Nullah in July but the award was not made before he became ill and was evacuated to St George's Hospital in Malta where he died.
Born 1882 in Edinburgh as David Dick. Son of James and Margaret (Innes) Dick of 47 Bank Street, Galashiels.
Died on Active Service on 10 November 1915 and buried in Pieta Military Cemetery, Malta.

James Dick – age 27 – Private (6694) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was a painter to trade and played rugby for the Gala A XV. He had spent some time in the USA and had previously served in the Territorial 4th KOSB. He re-enlisted in August 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but within two weeks he was wounded and died the following day in the 11th Casualty Clearing Station at Cape Helles.
Born 1887 in Melrose, Roxburghshire. Son of James and Margaret (Innes) Dick of 47 Bank Street, Galashiels. Husband of Isabella (Roy) Dick of 17 Douglas Street and of 31 Bank Street, Galashiels who he married in 1915 in Galashiels just before he left for Gallipoli.
Died of Wounds on 20 June 1915 and buried in Lancashire Landing Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey.
