George Elder has been the subject of discussion on the Great War Forum a few years back: https://www.greatwarforum.org/topic/203842-george-elder-ww1-hamilton-academy-war-memorial-lanarkshire/ and it appears he may well have survived the war, possibly dying in Carluke in 1972.
