Memorial: Tower Hill Memorial.

SS Gretavale was a British cargo steaming in Convoy SC-52 when she was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-202, about 250 miles NE of Belle Isle Strait. She was on a voyage from Baltimore to Loch Ewe. Of a complement of 44 only 6 survived. Survivors were rescued by HMCS Windflower. (Source: https://www.wrecksite.eu).

Unusual to see both a Military Cross and a Distinguished Conduct Medal.
Robert served from early in the war until almost the end.

Lance Sergeant (48) Robert Downie who had joined the Territorial 6th Scottish Rifles in 1908 landed with the 1/6th Battalion at Le Havre in March 1915.

Hamilton Advertiser 24/7/1915 p.4 (part of a longer para)
Sergeant Downie, who is 24 years of age, joined the Territorials seven years ago, and he is presently attached to “A” (Hamilton) Company. He on the Roll of Honour of Avon Street Church, of which congregation Sergeant Downie is a member in full communion. Detail of his gallant action are not yet officially announced, but in letters from members of the Battalion Sergeant Downie is reported have displayed great bravery in the attack and retirement on June 15th.

For conspicuous gallantry and resource at Rue d'Ouvert on 15th June, 1915. During an attack across open ground, when all the Officers and Serjeants had fallen, he led the Company with great determination and marked ability under very severe fire, and eventually brought what was left of the Company out of action.

Hamilton Advertiser 21/4/1917 p.4
Lieutenant Robert Downie. Scottish Rifles has been wounded and removed to hospital. He is reported have received a sever gunshot wound on the left leg while leading an attack an enemy machine gun emplacement.

Lt. (A./Capt.) Robert Downie, D.C.M., 5/6th Bn. Scots Rif., T.F.
He led his company in the advance to Clary on October 9th, 1918, with great courage and initiative. When the advance of his battalion and cavalry on the right were hung up by machine-gun fire, he personally reconnoitred the position under heavy machine-gun fire, and then with his company outflanked the enemy, capturing fifty prisoners and twelve machine guns. His gallant action enabled the advance to continue. He did splendid work.
