Is Private John Bernard the brother of Harry Bernard mentioned in the Dundee Courier?

Thanks

Adam

I'm guessing so.

DUNDEE COURIER: 27.07.1917
TWO CUPAR SOLDIERS ARE KILLED...

Information was also received in Cupar last night that Private John Bernard, Cameron Highlanders, son of Mr James Bernard, hairdresser, Lady Wynd, had been killed in action. Aged about 21 years, Private Bernard before he enlisted was a skin-dresser in the employment of Mr Gustav Vogel, Cupar.

However it is believed that in the late 1800's, a German called Gustaf Vogel arrived in town, and set up his business in Kirk Wynd as a sausage skin manufacturer.

We do know from the minute books that he took his three degrees during 1902 and 1903, and went on to become an office bearer in the lodge for a brief time soon after. Whilst we believe that he was the supplier of the Ram's head, there is no further trace of this in the minute books. Gustaf also worked in the local slaughterhouse, and he met an untimely death by contracting anthrax when being cut by a knife.

Rolling Eyes You've got to love this project and the "stuff" it turns-up.

If only it was possible to "like" posts Ken, as your snippet of Cupar's manufacturing history has made my day!

Thanks to Mrs Aase Goldsmith for photo.
Coming to a Christmas tree near you soon!
Real story is that the council are doing essential repairs to stonework and it will be unveiled soon. They have managed to trace the daughter of the lady who modelled for it.
