PTE. JOHN ROONEY.
John Rooney – age 26 – Private (16423) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John enlisted in November 1914 and landed with the 6th KOSB at Boulogne in May 1915. At some point he was transferred to the 2nd Battalion.
Born 1891 in Melrose, Roxburghshire as John Mulvay. Son of the late Jane (Mulvay) Rooney (died 1903) and step-son of William Rooney of Woodburn Cottages, Clovenfords, Caddonfoot who had married in 1893 in Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 8 November 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Galashiels War Memorial as John M. Rooney, KOSB.


PTE. JAMES THOMSON.
I cannot trace this man - now traced!

James Thomson – age 30 – Private (12734) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was a ploughman at Rink, Caddonfoot when his son David Hutchison Thomson was born there in January 1914. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in May 1915 but he was killed four months later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1885 in Galashiels, Selkirkshire. [Ladhope] Son of Janet Thomson (later Mrs John Martin) of Comely Bank Terrace, Galashiels. Husband of Mary (Lunam) Thomson who he married in 1912 in Earlston, Berwickshire.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Galashiels War Memorial and the Earlston Parish War Memorial.



PTE. PATRICK THOMSON.

L.CPL. CHARLES WHYTE. M.M.
Charles Morrison Whyte, Military Medal – age 27 – Private (125077) 3/1st Battalion, Lovat Scouts.
Charles was employed at the Tweed Vineries in Cloverfords, Caddonfoot when he enlisted in 1914. He landed as Private (2225) with the 1/1st Lovat Scouts at Gallipoli in September 1915 but was invalided home. After he recovered he joined the Special Scouts and went to France in October 1916. He was a noted sniper and was awarded a M.M. in early 1917.
The Scouts formed a number of detachments used for observation and sniping work in France.
Born 1890 in Dornoch, Sutherland. Son of William and Isabella (Morrison) Whyte of Aldourie Home Farm, Dores, Inverness-shire.
Killed in Action on 22 May 1917 and buried in Bully-Grenay Communal Cemetery, British Extension, France.
Also named on the Dores Parish War Memorial.


CPL. THOMAS WILLIAMS.
Thomas Pilling Williams – age 26 – Lance Corporal (G/11081) 2nd Battalion, Middlesex Regiment attached to the 2nd Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment.
In 1911 Thomas was a gardener, living with his parents in Wrexham, North Wales. It is assumed that he was working on one of the estates in Caddonfoot when he enlisted in the 3rd (King's Own) Hussars in Galashiels in September 1914. He was posted to the Middlesex Regiment and landed with the 11th Battalion at Boulogne in June 1915. At some point he was transferred to the 2nd Battalion.
Born 1890 in Ruabon, Wrexham, Denbighshire. Son of Frederick and Frances (Jones) Williams of 31 Bradley Road, Wrexham.
Killed in Action on 9 September 1916 and buried in Caterpillar Valley Cemetery, Longueval, Somme, France.
Also named on the Wrexham War Memorial.


PTE. ROBERT WOOLLEY.
Robert Woolley – age 23 – Private (S/9940) 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
Bob was a policeman when he enlisted in Galashiels in May 1915. He joined his battalion in Belgium in September 1915.
Born 1893 in Leith, Edinburgh. Son of George and Margaret (McLaren) Woolley of Craig Lodge, Clovenfords, Caddonfoot.
Killed in Action on 30 April 1916 and buried in Kemmel Chateau Military Cemetery, Belgium.


PTE. WILLIAM WYPER.
William Wyper – age 19 – Private (47859) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
William was resident in Clovenfords, Caddonfoot when he enlisted.
Born 1899 in Manor, Peeblesshire. John and Janet (Robertson) Wyper.
Missing in Action on 10 April 1918 and named on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Manor Parish and on the Peebles War Memorials together with his brother Thomas, Private (S/1721) 8th Seaforth Highlanders, who was killed on 19 July 1916.

1939 -1945


SGT. GEORGE BRUCE, R.A.F.
George Bruce – age 22 – Sergeant/Air Gunner (1347044) 103 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
George's Lancaster bomber had taken off from RAF Elsham Wolds in Lincolnshire for a raid on Berlin but on the return leg the aircraft collided with an Halifax bomber of 428 Squadron and both aircraft crashed near RAF Middleton St. George in County Durham.
Born 1921 in Westruther, Berwickshire. Son of Richard A. D. Bruce and Jane (Haliburton) Bruce of Old Peel, Clovenfords, Caddonfoot and of Ashiestiel, Caddonfoot.
Died on Active Service on 27 November 1943 and buried in Caddonfoot Parish Churchyard. (CWG)


PTE. ANDREW COLVINE, K.O.S.B.
Andrew Colvine – age 22 – Lance Corporal (3189843) 1st Battalion, The London Scottish, Gordon Highlanders.
Andrew was employed at Fairnilee, Caddonfoot and was a member of the Territorial Galashiels Company of the King's Own Scottish Borderers. He was mobilised in September 1939 and served in a number of units before he joined the London Scottish in Italy in early 1944. Andrew was killed during the battle for the village of Gemmano, south of Rimini, and he was re-interred at Gradara in June 1945.
Born 1922 in Caddonfoot. Son of the late Margaret (Anderson) Colvine of Fairnilee (died 1936) and of William Colvine of Scrogbank, Walkerburn, Peeblesshire.
Killed in Action on 5 September 1944 and buried in Gradara War Cemetery, Italy.

F.LT. ALAN W. HUCKLE, D.F.C. R.A.F.
Alan William Huckle, Distinguished Flying Cross – age 25 – Flight Lieutenant/Pilot (128891) 640 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Allan was commissioned from Leading Aircraftman (658585) in September 1942 and was promoted to Flight Lieutenant in September 1944. The award of the DFC was announced in April 1945, a month after his death. Alan's Halifax bomber had taken off from RAF Leconfield in Yorkshire for a raid on Witten near Dortmund but the aircraft was shot down over the target. He was buried in Witten-Annen Cemetery but he was re-interred in June 1947.
Born 1920 in Hackney, London. Son of William Bernard Huckle and May Helena (Mead) Huckle of Fairnilee Caddonfoot and of 38 Brycedale Crescent, Southgate. London. Husband of Millicent (Gray) Huckle who he married in October 1944 in Caddonfoot Parish Church.
Alan's best man at his wedding was Flying Officer James Byron Willoughby (J35130) RCAF of Loreburn, Saskatchewan who was the sole survivor from the aircraft.
Killed in Action on 19 March 1945 and buried in Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Germany.


PTE. JAMES HUMBLE, CAMERONS.
James Humble – age 22 – Private (3062129) 5th Battalion, Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders.
James was employed in the Buckholmside Skinworks in Galashiels when he enlisted in 1940. He had served in North Africa and Sicily before returning to the UK to prepare for D-Day. The Battalion landed at Normandy on 7 June but James was killed at Longueval just over a week later. He was re-interred at Ranville in June 1945.
Born 1921 in Galashiels, Selkirkshire. Son of William and Elizabeth Ann (Laidlaw) Humble, of Torwoodlee, Caddonfoot.
Killed in Action on 16 June 1944 and buried in Ranville War Cemetery, Calvados, France.
Also named on the Galashiels War Memorial.


SGT. THOMAS SANDERSON, R.A.F.
Thomas Sanderson – age 27 – Sergeant (563398) Royal Air Force.
Thomas served his apprenticeship at RAF Halton near Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire and was based at 11 Operational Training Unit at RAF Bassingbourne in Cambridgeshire when he became ill. He died of an intestinal problem and appendicitis at RAF Henlow near Biggleswade, Bedfordshire.
Born 1912 in Wallsend-on-Tyne, Tynemouth, Northumberland. Son of Robert and Jane (Hill) Sanderson of Clovenfords. Caddonfoot.
In 1911 Robert was a policeman living with his wife Jane and his son Robert in Wallsend on Tyne, Tynemouth, Northumberland. They lived in Clovenfords from 1931 after Robert retired.
Died on Service on 2 November 1940 and buried in Galashiels (Eastlands) Cemetery.

SGT. JAMES H. STODDART, K.O.S.B.
James Hector Stoddart – age 25 – Lance Sergeant (3192250) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
The 6th KOSB landed on the Normandy beaches on 15 June 1944, and took part in the battles around Caen and the River Odon. James was killed near Grainville-sur-Oden but was re-interred at Cheux in July 1945.
Born 1918 in Caddonfoot. Son of John and Jane (Scott) Stoddart, of Blackhaugh, Clovenfords, Caddonfoot.
Killed in Action on 1 July 1944 and buried in St. Manvieu War Cemetery, Cheux, Calvados, France.


A/C EDMUND TURNER, R.A.F.
Edmund Turner – age 21 – Aircraftman 2nd Class (1561888) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
“Eddie” was based at the 38th Personnel Transit Centre in Italy when he died of injuries sustained in an accident.
Born 1922 in Eccles, Berwickshire. Son of George and Elizabeth Barbara (Smith) Turner of Torwoodlee, Caddonfoot and of Alderston Lodge, Haddington, East Lothian.
Died on Active Service on 17 May 1944 and buried in Sangro River War Cemetery, Italy.
