PTE. B. STEWART, 15th R.S.
Bruce Stewart – age 35 – Private (18154) 15th Battalion (1st Edinburgh), Royal Scots.
Bruce served his apprenticeship in Melrose before he was for 13 years an Ironmonger in Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbrightshire. He was living at Bowling Green Cottage when he enlisted in November 1914 and he landed with his battalion at Le Havre in January 1916. He was wounded by shrapnel and taken prisoner on 29 April 1917 at Monchy and on 26 May was reported to be a Prisoner Of War in Hamelin, wounded in the left lung. Bruce died in hospital at Hamelin and was buried there, but was re-interred at Niederzwehren in November 1923.
Born 1882 at Lilliesleaf, Bowden, Roxburghshire. Son of William Henry Stewart and of Margaret (Bruce) Stewart of Sunnyside Cottage, Darnick, Melrose and of Tweed View, Newstead, Melrose.
Died of wounds on 13 June 1917 and buried in Niederzwehren Cemetery, Germany.
Also named on the Castle Douglas War Memorial, on the St. Andrew's Church memorial, now in the Castle Douglas Parish Church and on the Melrose War Memorial.
Niederzwehren cemetery was begun by the Germans in 1915 for the burial of prisoners of war who died at the local camp. In 1922-23 it was decided that the graves of Commonwealth servicemen who had died all over Germany should be brought together into four permanent cemeteries. Niederzwehren is one. (Source: CWGC)

James Allan – age 28 – Private (200631) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was a gardener in Darnick when he enlisted and as Private (7027) he landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915. He was wounded during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah in July and was evacuated to hospital in Alexandria but went on to serve in Egypt and Palestine.
Born 1889 in Melrose. Son of Andrew and Agnes Oliver (Beattie) Allan of Darnick, Melrose.
Killed in Action on 28 November 1917 and buried in Ramleh War Cemetery, Israel.
Also named on the Melrose War Memorial and on the Free Church memorial in Melrose.

Born 1891 in Melrose. Son of Andrew and Agnes Oliver (Beattie) Allan of Darnick, Melrose.
Missing in Action on 16 December 1917 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Melrose War Memorial and on the Free Church memorial in Melrose.

PTE. G.W. BLACK, 16th R.S.
George Wade Black – age 26 – Private (19419) 16th Battalion (2nd Edinburgh) Royal Scots.
George had been a gardener with the Carnegie Trust at Pittencrieff Gardens in Dunfermline and was at Inchdairnie Gardens, Kinglassie, Fife when war broke out. He was at Auchen Castle, near Beattock in Dumfriesshire when he enlisted with his brother John (19418) in November 1914. They landed with the battalion at Le Havre in January 1916. George died in the 43rd Casualty Clearing Station at Bailleulval near Arras.
Born 1892 in Melrose. Son of James and Margaret (Leishman) Black of Railway Cottages, Darnick, Melrose.
Died of Wounds on 23 March 1918 and buried in Bac-Du-Sud British Cemetery, Bailleulval, France.
Also named on the Melrose War Memorial.

John Robert Black – age 26 – Lance Sergeant (19148) 16th Battalion (2nd Edinburgh) Royal Scots.
John was a stonemason when he enlisted with his brother George (19419) in November 1914 and they landed with the battalion at Le Havre in January 1916. He was wounded on the Somme in August but after treatment at the 8th Stationary Hospital at Wimereux he was able to rejoin his battalion in September. John had been promoted to Corporal in July 1916 and was promoted again in January 1917.
Born 1890 in Melrose. Son of James and Margaret (Leishman) Black of Railway Cottages, Darnick, Melrose.
Killed in Action on 9 April 1917 and buried in Ste. Catherine British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Melrose War Memorial.

Donald Gordon Cruickshank – age 39 – Lance Corporal (42223) 16th Battalion (2nd Glasgow) Highland Light Infantry.
In 1911 Donald was a game keeper at Sunderland Hall, Selkirk. He enlisted as Private (7450) in the King's Own Scottish Borderers but was transferred to the HLI in France.
Born 1878 in Yetholm, Roxburghshire. Son of Donald and Margaret (Mann) Cruickshank of Darnick, Melrose. Husband of Margaret Kerr (Cleghorn) Cruickshank who he married in 1907 in Selkirk.
Missing in Action on 2 December 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium..
Also named on the Melrose War Memorial and on the Free Church memorial in Melrose.

John Cruickshank – age 37 – Private (18943) 2nd Labour Company, Seaforth Highlanders transferred as Private (7367) to 13th Company, Labour Corps.
John had been a stonemason in Melrose for many years when he enlisted as Private (24560) in the King's Own Scottish Borderers. He was posted to the Seaforths in France before being transferred to the Labour Corps.
Born 1880 in Melrose and also registered in Stichill, Roxburghshire. Son of Donald and Margaret (Mann) Cruickshank of Darnick, Melrose. Husband of Agnes (Young) of Darnick who he married in 1903 in Edinburgh.
Agnes, age 38, died in 1919 in Melrose as Mrs Daniel Cameron.
Killed in Action on 5 August 1917 and buried in Gwalia Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Melrose War Memorial and on the Free Church memorial in Melrose.

George Hardie Currie – age 28 – Private (24037) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
George was a painter when he enlisted in December 1915. He was mobilised as Private (22954) in the King's Own Scottish Borderers but was posted to the RSF in France in June 1916. George joined his battalion on 7 July but was kill on the Somme at the end of the month.
Born 1888 in Melrose. Son of the late William John Currie (died 1906) and of Emily Elizabeth (Leeder) Currie of the Post Office, Darnick and of Towerview, Darnick, Melrose.
Missing in Action on 30 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme. France.
Also named on the Melrose War Memorial.


L.Cpl. I. FERNIE, 1/4th K.O.S.B.
Ivor Fernie – age 20 – Lance Corporal (200148) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Ivor was employed in the Town Clerk's Office in Melrose and was secretary of the cricket club. He was a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB and as Private (790) he was mobilised in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 and then served in Egypt and in Palestine where he was wounded in April 1917. Later that year he became ill and he was evacuated to the 24th Stationary Hospital in Kantara where he died.
Born 1896 in Blackford, Perthshire. Son of the late William Fernie (died 1916) and of Annie (McNab) Fernie of Abbotsford Road, Darnick, Melrose.
Died on Active Service on 8 September 1917 and buried in Kantara War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
Also named on the Melrose War Memorial.


PTE. J. GIBB, 10th S.R.
John Gibb – age 19 – Private (235126) 10th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
John landed as Private (6989) with the 1/4th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was wounded during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah a month later and was evacuated to the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh. When he recovered he was posted to the Cameronians but was fatally wounded and died in the 32nd Casualty Clearing Station near Ypres.
Born 1898 in Ancrum, Roxburghshire. Son of Edward and Euphemia (Hume) Gibb of Darnick, Melrose.
Died of Wounds on 9 August 1917 and buried in Brandhoek New Military Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Melrose War Memorial.

James Hastie – age 18 – Private (42356) 9th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
James was an assistant gardener when he enlisted as Private (52425) in the Highland Light Infantry in November 1917. He was posted to the Cameronians in March 1918 but was killed a month later.
Born 1899 in Melrose. Son of William and Helen Goodfellow (Lunn) Hastie of Smith's Road, Darnick, Melrose.
Missing in Action on 28 April 1918 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Melrose War Memorial.


Q.M.S. T. MANN, 18th HUSSARS.
Thomas Mann – age 28 – Squadron Quartermaster Sergeant (1514) 18th (Queen Mary's Own) Hussars.
Thomas was a Corporal with the 18th Hussars at Tidworth Camp in Wiltshire at the outbreak of war and he landed with the regiment at Boulogne on 15 August 1914. He spent the rest of the war on the western front until a month after the Armistice when he contracted pneumonia and died in the 20th Casualty Clearing Station in Charleroi.
Born 1889 in Lauder, Berwickshire. Son of Robina Mann, from 1901 Mrs. George Shillinglaw of Darnick Vale, Melrose.
Died on Service on 8 December 1918 and buried in Charleroi Communal Cemetery, Hainaut, Belgium.
Also named on the Melrose War Memorial and on the Free Church memorial in Melrose.


PTE. D. MITCHELL, 1/5th K.O.S.B.
David Mitchell – age 19 – Private (201577) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
David was a gardener at Clovenfords, Caddonfoot, Selkirkshire when he enlisted as Private (8706) in the KOSB. He joined his battalion in Egypt in 1916 and served in Palestine where he was killed at Gaza.
Born 1897 in Melrose. Son of the late David Mitchell (died 1909) and of Margaret (Harper) Mitchell of Tower Road and of Smith's Road, Darnick, Melrose.
Missing in Action on 19 April 1917 and named on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.
Also named on the Melrose War Memorial and on the Caddonfoot Parish War Memorial.

George Alexander McDonald – age 24 – Private (1024) 1/8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
George had worked as a joiner in Melrose before he moved to Haddington, East Lothian. He enlisted in Dunbar and landed with his battalion at La Havre in November 1914 but he was killed six months later near Festubert.
Born 1890 in North Berwick, East Lothian. Son of Robert and Jane (Durie) McDonald of Smith Street and of Albert Place, Darnick, Melrose.
Missing in Action on 16 May 1915 and named on the Le Touret Memorial, France.
Also named on the Melrose War Memorial and on the Dunbar War Memorial.


PTE. J. RAFFERTY, 8th N.F.
James Rafferty – age 24 – Private (4084) 8th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers.
James enlisted in Newcastle-on-Tyne and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in July 1915 but was killed a month later.
Born 1891 in Calton, Glasgow. Son of Hugh and Annie (Reynolds) Rafferty of Tower Road, Darnick, Melrose.
Missing in Action on 11 August 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Melrose War Memorial.


SGT. W.K. REDPATH, M.M. & BAR. 1st CAM. Hrs.
Walter Kerr Redpath, Military Medal – age 25 – Sergeant (20370) 1st Company, Machine Gun Corps.
Walter was serving with the 1st Cameron Highlanders in Edinburgh at the outbreak of war and as Private (8684) he landed with his battalion at Le Havre on 14 August 1914. He transferred to the 1st MGC when it was formed in January 1916. The announcement of Walter's Military Medal was made in September 1916, a month after his death, but I cannot trace the award of a second M.M.
Born 1891 in Walkerburn, Peebleshire. Son of the late Margaret (Kerr) Redpath (died 1891) and of John Redpath of Darnick. Step-son of Jane (Hogarth or Smith) Redpath of North Berwick and of Montreal, Canada.
John and Jane married in 1894 in Edinburgh and by 1901 the family were living in North Berwick, East Lothian. John, Jane and their two youngest children, Thomas and John, emigrated to Canada in May 1911.
Killed in Action on 31 August 1916 and buried in Flatiron Copse Cemetery, Mametz, Somme, France.
Also named on the Melrose War Memorial and on the North Berwick War Memorial.

William Rutherford – age 20 – Private (6997) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1894 in Melrose. Son of James and Cecilia (Lillie) Rutherford of Tower Road, Darnick, Melrose.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Melrose War Memorial.


SAP. J. SHIEL, R.E.
James Shiel – age 38 – Sapper (154299) Royal Engineers.
James was a stonemason and he enlisted in March 1916 but became ill while serving overseas and was evacuated back to the UK. He was discharged from the army in December 1917 and awarded a Silver War Badge (221163) James died of tuberculosis at his home in Darnick.
Born 1881 in Melrose. (Source:1891 census and GRoS – Birth Register)
Son of the late William Shiel (died 1912) and of Susan Jean (Grieg) Shiel of Darnick, Melrose.
Died on 14 May 1920 and buried in Melrose Abbey Churchyard. (CWG)

L.Cpl. A. SMITH, 12th R.S.
Adam Stevenson Smith – age 19 – Private (41297) 12th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Adam enlisted as Private (25339) in the King's Own Scottish Borderers and was posted to the 5th Entrenching Battalion in France before being transferred to the Royal Scots.
Born 1898 Melrose. Son of William and Agnes (Lillie) Smith of Darnick, Melrose.
Missing in Action on 11 April 1918 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Melrose War Memorial.

1939 – 1945

STOKER A.G. BUNYAN, R.N.
Alexander Gillies Bunyan – age 34 – Stoker (LT/KX 147619) H.M. Trawler Red Gauntlet, Royal Naval Patrol Service.
Alexander did contracting work with his father before he joined up. The “Red Gauntlet” was a Trawler requisitioned in August 1939 and used as a Minesweeper. She was torpedoed and sunk by the German motor torpedo boat S-86 off Felixstowe.
Born 1909 in Melrose. Son of Alexander and Ann (Gillies) Bunyan of Floral Bank, Gattonside, Melrose. Husband of Isabella Lillico (Goodfellow) Bunyan of Darnick Vale, Melrose who he married in 1935 in Fogo, Berwickshire.
Missing in Action/Lost at Sea on 5 August 1943 and named on the Lowestoft Naval Memorial, Suffolk.
Also named on the Melrose War Memorial and on the Melrose Church memorial.


O.S. N. ELLIOT, R.N.
Thomas Norman Elliot – age 24 – Ordinary Seaman (LT/JX 190062) H.M. Patrol Yacht Nirvana, Royal Naval Patrol Service.
Norman was brought up by his aunt Mrs. J. Rutherford of Darnick, Melrose and was a member of the 1st Melrose Company of the Boys Brigade. He was working at the Douglas Hotel in Galashiels when he enlisted in 1939 and he was training on the “Nirvana” when he was drowned. He was with a group of servicemen returning from a dance in St. Mawes, Cornwall when the small boat crossing the River Percuil to St. Anthony capsized. Eight of the men drowned.
Born 1916 in Caddonfoot, Selkirkshire. Son of the late John Elliot and of Margaret (Jardine) Elliot of 14 East High Street, Lauder, Berwickshire.
Died on Service on 29 September 1940 and buried in Falmouth Cemetery, Cornwall.
Also named on the Melrose Church memorial as Norman Elliot and on the Lauder Burgh and Parish War Memorial as Thomas Norman Elliot.


Sig. D. McDIARMID, R.S.F.
Dan McDiarmid – age 22 – Fusilier (14211548) 6th Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
Dan was a gardener at Gattonside House, Darnick, Melrose when he enlisted. The 6th RSF landed in Normandy in mid-June 1944 and attacked the area around Caen, taking the bridge over the River Odon. Dan was killed near the village of Le Haut du Bosq and was buried there but was re-interred in Cheux in March 1946.
Born 1922 in Selkirk. Son of Hugh and Agnes (Dow) McDiarmid of Abbotsmoss, Melrose.
Killed in Action on 29 June 1944 and buried in St. Manvieu War Cemetery, Cheux, Calvados, France.
Also named on the Melrose War Memorial.


Sgt. A/G. J.K.M. McINTOSH, R.A.F.
James Kerr Murdoch McIntosh – age 19 – Sergeant/Air Gunner (3020834) 625 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Jim's Lancaster bomber had taken off from RAF Kelstern in Lincolnshire for a raid on Nordhausen in Germany but the aircraft crashed at Visbedden in Belgium.
Born 1925 in Coldingham, Berwickshire. Son of James and Elizabeth Fell (Murdoch) McIntosh of St. Boswells, Roxburghshire.
Killed in Action on 3 April 1945 and buried in Leopoldsburg War Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Melrose War Memorial and on the Melrose Church memorial.


Pte. A. STEWART, R.A.S.C.

Alex was killed in a road accident in Italy.
Born 1915 in Melrose. Son of Daniel and Alice (Hunter) Stewart of Broomilees Road, Darnick, Melrose. Husband of Cathie or Josephine Sykes (Linton) Stewart of Keyside, Darnick, Melrose who he married in 1940 in Walkerburn, Peeblesshire.
Died on Active Service on 9 April 1945 and buried in Bari War Cemetery, Italy.
Also named on the Melrose War Memorial.
