LANG , James C. Captain.

Named on the Melrose War Memorial in Roxburghshire as:

CAPTAIN J.C. LANG.
James Corbet Lang – age 40 – Captain, 1st Battalion attached to the 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James had served with the Black Watch (Lovat's Scouts) in the South African War and was commissioned in the KOSB in November 1900. He was posted as the Adjutant of the Territorial 4th Battalion of the KOSB in August 1912 and landed with them at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.

Born 1874 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Son of the Rev. Gavin Lang and of Frances Mary (Corbet) Lang of Inverness.
Husband of Mary Lilian (Mustard) Lang of Moira Cottage, Colinton, Edinburgh who he married in 1907 in Bromley in Kent.
In 1911 James (an Army Officer) and Mary Lilian were at Marine Parade, Hollywood, County Down, Ireland.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.

His inclusion on the Melrose memorial is probably explained by the report in the Southern Reporter of 26 /8/1915 p. 7
4th K.O.S.B. OFFICER'S SACRIFICE. FELL IN ATTEMPTING TO SAVE HIS COLONEL.
A letter has been received from the Front by Mrs McNeile, of Kippilaw, [Bowden near Melrose] giving details of the last moments of Captain J. C. Lang, Adjutant, l/4th K.O.S. Borderers. After the 4th K.O.S. Borderers had on July 12th retired to the line to be held by our troops, which in their charge they had overshot, Captain Lang was seen to return with them, but instead of remaining under cover of the trench, he, although wounded, deliberately went out into the fire-swept zone again, in order, it is supposed, to bring in Lieutenant Colonel McNeile, who had fallen during the retirement. Neither his body, nor that of Lieutenant Colonel McNeile, have been found, and it is possible, therefore, that he sacrificed his life in the endeavour. Mrs McNeile is most anxious that all honour should rendered to the memory of one whose last effort was to save her husband's life, and the Territorial Force Associations were of the opinion that no better means could be found than by asking all the local papers to publish the account of what happened.

UPDATE:

The 1915 Valuation Roll shows that Captain Lang and his wife lived at Hazeldean, Newstead, Melrose.

The Probate of his Will shows that Mary was a Nursing Sister at the Edinburgh War Hospital in Bangour, West Lothian.
