This fellow was a bit of a nightmare to research until:
Jedburgh Gazette 31/8/1917
JEDBURGH MAN MISSING. Mrs John Gray, Boundaries, Jedburgh, has now received from Perth notification of date 22nd August. that her son, Private James Gray. Gordon Highlanders, was posted as missing on the 18th June, 1917. This is official confirmation of the information published in the Gazette four weeks ago.

PRIVATE JAMES COULTER (JEDBURGH) REPORTED KILLED.
Mrs John Gray. 1 Boundaries. Jedburgh, has received official intimation that no further news having been obtained relative to her son, Private James Coulter, Gordon Highlanders, who has been missing since 18th June 1917, the Army Connell have been regretfully constrained to conclude that he was killed on the above date. A message of sympathy from the King and Queen accompanies the intimation. Private Coulter was 22 years of age, and Mrs Gray's only son. Previous to enlistment he was a butler Maxpoffle, St Boswells.

Fortunately his service record as James Gray survived.

He is named on the St. Boswell Parish War memorial as:
JAMES GRAY, G.Hrs.
James Gray – age 21 – Private (10361) 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
James, aged 19, was a butler/valet at Maxpoffle House, St. Boswells when he enlisted in June 1915 and he joined the 2nd Gordon Highlanders in France in October. He was wounded at the Somme on 1 July 1916 and treated at the 2nd General Hospital at Abbeville before he was evacuated to the Royal Victoria hospital at Netley, Hampshire. He returned to France and was posted to the 1st Battalion in December 1916.
Born 1896 at Bankhead in Linton, Roxburghshire as James Coulter.
Son of Sarah Coulter or Brown and step-son of John Gray of Boundaries, Jedburgh who had married in 1905 in Linton.
Sarah's parents are shown as Andrew Brown and Margaret Coulter.
Missing in Action on 18 June 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.

Named on the Ancrum Parish War Memorial in Roxburghshire as:

JAMES YOUNG, Sgt. Scot. Rifles.
James Young, Military Medal – age 21 – Lance Sergeant (12532) 1st Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
In 1901 James, age 4, was with his siblings and his mother at his grandfather James Young's home at Hundalee Smithy, Jedburgh. He was in Ancrum when he enlisted in August 1914 and he joined the 2nd Cameronians in France in March 1915. At some point he transferred to the 1st Battalion and he was awarded the M.M. for his actions on 21/22 March 1918.
Born 1896 in Jedburgh, Roxburghshire. Son of the late Adam Young (died 1901) and of Ellen or Helen Linton (Paxton) Young of Hundalee Smithy, Jedburgh. He named his aunt Janet H. Veitch as his legatee.
Missing in Action on 13 April 1918 and named on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.

He sailed from Sydney in October and, after a period in Egypt from December 1914, the battalion landed at Gallipoli in April 1915.
Born 1888 in Hobkirk, Roxburghshire.
Missing in Action on 2 May 1915 and named on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.


THOMSON, GEO. PTE. AUSTRS.
George Thomson – age 36 – Private (6365) 3rd Battalion, Australian Infantry.
George was a ship's steward, living at Meringa, Boundary Road, Croydon, New South Wales, when he enlisted in March 1916. He sailed from Sydney in September and landed in Plymouth before joining his battalion in France in February 1917. He was wounded in May and after treatment in hospitals in Rouen and Le Havre he rejoined his battalion in August only to be wounded again in October. George was evacuated to hospital in Epsom before returning to his battalion in April 1918 but he was killed four months later. He was buried in Proyart Communal Cemetery Extension but was re-interred in April 1923.
Born 1882 in Hobkirk, Roxburghshire.
Killed in Action on 26 August 1918 and buried in Heath Cemetery, Harbonnieres, Somme, France.


THOMSON, R. T. (sic) PTE. AUSTRS.
Robert Hume Thomson – age 40 – Private (3992) 51st Battalion, Australian Infantry.
Robert had been a gardener at Hunthill, Jedburgh before he emigrated and was still a gardener, living in Perth, Western Australia when he enlisted in June 1917. He sailed from Melbourne, Victoria in October and landed at Devonport in December before joining his battalion in France in April 1918. Robert was killed a week later. He is known to be buried in Adelaide Cemetery but his actual burial plot was lost and he has a special memorial marker.
Born 1877 in Glendale, Northumberland.
Husband of Margaret Lawson (Eunson) Thomson, of Edward Street, Osborne Park, Perth, Western Australia and later of 7 George Street, Leith, who he married in 1904 in Leith North.
Killed in Action on 24 April 1918 and buried in Adelaide Cemetery, Villers-Bretonneux, Somme, France.

ANDERSON, R. B. LIEUT. K.O.S.B.
Robert Ballantine Anderson – age 27 – Lieutenant, 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert was educated at St. Mary's School in Melrose, Roxburghshire and at Edinburgh Academy before becoming a Student of Law at Edinburgh University 1908 to 1912. He was appointed a Writer to the Signet in Edinburgh in 1913. He enlisted as a Private in the 1st Lovat Scouts in September 1914 and was commissioned in January 1915. He joined his battalion at Gallipoli in July 1915 and later served in Egypt and Palestine where he was promoted to Lieutenant in June 1916 but where he was killed at Gaza.
Born 1890 in Jedburgh. Son of Robert Ballantine Anderson and Agnes (MacMillan) Anderson, of Glenburn Hall, Jedburgh.
Killed in Action on 19 April 1917 and buried in Gaza War Cemetery, Palestine.
Also named on the St. Mary's School memorial, on the Edinburgh Academy memorial, on the Edinburgh University's Roll of the Fallen, on an individual memorial in Jedburgh Parish Church and on a memorial in Jedburgh Old and Trinity Church.


BAILLIE, GEO. PTE. K.O.S.B.
George Baillie – age 22 – Private (200061) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
As Private (638) George joined his battalion in Egypt in 1916 and he served there and in Palestine before the battalion moved to France in April 1918.
Born 1896 in Wilton, Hawick, Roxburghshire. Son of Robert Baillie and Mary Jane (Philip or Rennie) Baillie of 31 New Bongate, Jedburgh.
Killed in Action on 3 October 1918 and buried in Cambrai East Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on a memorial in Jedburgh Old and Trinity Church.


BAIRD, J. S. M.M. CORPL. CANADIANS.
John Sword Baird, Military Medal – age 29 – Corporal (406667) 1st Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
John was a book-keeper when he enlisted at Hamilton, Ontario in April 1915. He had previously served with the Territorial 4th KOSB for 4 years before he emigrated and for a year with the local militia 77th Wentworth Regiment in Ontario. He sailed from Canada with the 36th Battalion in June 1915 and was posted to 1st Battalion in France a year later. He was awarded a MM for his actions as a despatch rider between the front line and battalion HQ in July 1916. John was killed while leading his platoon at Courcelette chalk pit.
Born 1887 in Jedburgh. Son of the late George Baird of Normanie, Jedburgh (died 1908) and of Jane Mills (Sword) Baird of 164 Park Avenue, Barrow-in-Furness, England.
Killed in Action on 23 September 1916 and buried in Adanac Military Cemetery, Miraumont, Somme, France.
Also named on the Trinity Church memorial in Jedburgh Old and Trinity Church.

BALFOUR, R. B. PTE. M.G.C.
Robert Brown Balfour – age 25 – Private (98145) 238th Company, Machine Gun Corps.
Robert was employed in his father's business in Jedburgh when he enlisted as Private (21859) in the Highland Light Infantry. He was posted to the MGC and landed with his Company in France in July 1917. He had been at the front for 8 weeks when he was killed.
Born 1892 in Jedburgh. Son of George and Margaret Murray (Common) Balfour of 15 High Street Jedburgh.
Missing in Action on 20 September 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.


BALLANTYNE, ALEX. PTE. K.O.S.B.
Alexander Milligan Ballantyne – age 27 – Private (29995) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Alexander was employed in the cloth finishing department of a factory in Galashiels, Selkirkshire when he enlisted. He landed as Private (6676) with the 1/4th KOSB at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was wounded. When he recovered he was posted to the 6th KOSB in France.
Born December 1890 in Jedburgh. Son of the late William Ballantyne (died 1914) and of Euphemia (Telfer) Ballantyne of 65 Castlegate, Jedburgh. Husband of Sarah Ballantyne (Watson) Ballantyne of 97 St Andrew Street, Galashiels who he married in 1916 in Galashiels while he was on leave.
Missing in Action on 3 May 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Trinity Church memorial in Jedburgh Old and Trinity Church and on the Galashiels Roll of Honour.


BELL, ALEX. PTE. SEAF. H.
Alexander Bell – age 19 – Private (203074) 1/4th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
Alexander had served his apprenticeship as a baker in Jedburgh. He enlisted in August 1916 and joined his battalion in France in September 1917 but was killed two months later.
Born 1898 in Jedburgh. Son of James and Agnes (Mabon) Bell of Richmond Row, Jedburgh.
Missing in Action on 20 November 1917 and named on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval, France.
Also named on the Trinity Church memorial in Jedburgh Old and Trinity Church.

Walter Bell – age 30 – Private (273245) 17th Battalion (Rosebery) Royal Scots.
Walter enlisted as Private (2480) in the 1/1st Lothians and Border Horse Yeomanry but was transferred to the Royal Scots in France. He died in 5th General Hospital in Rouen.
Born 1888 in Jedburgh. Son of Walter and Elizabeth (Anderson) Bell of Hindhousefield, Jedburgh.
Died of Wounds on 20 June 1918 and buried in St. Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, France.
Also named on a memorial in Jedburgh Old and Trinity Church.


BEST, THOS. PTE. GORD. H.
Thomas Best – age 42 – Private (3/7327) 2nd Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
Thomas was a tailor when he enlisted as Private (5562) in the Gordon Highlanders in January 1896.
He served in India where he took part in the storming of the Heights of Dargai in 1897 and in the South Africa War when he was one of defenders at Ladysmith in 1900. He transferred to the Army Reserve in January 1904 and was discharged in January 1912. Thomas re-enlisted in December 1914 and joined his battalion in France in February 1915 but was killed a month later.
Born 1871 in Jedburgh. Son of the late Andrew Best (died 1901) and of Elizabeth (Potts) Best of Exchange Street, Jedburgh. Brother of James Best of Doorpool, Bonchester Bridge, Roxburghshire.
Missing in Action on 13 March 1915 and named on the Le Touret Memorial, France.


BLAIKIE, JAS. PTE. SEAF. H.
James Blaikie – age 18 – Private (S/5267) 1st Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
Jim was a forester on the Hartrigge estate, Jedburgh when he enlisted in September 1914. He joined his battalion in France in March 1915 but was killed a few weeks later.
Born 1896 in Ord, Berwick, Northumberland. Son of William and Margaret (Thomson) Blaikie of 6 Old Bongate, Jedburgh.
Missing in Action on 9 May 1915 and named on the Le Touret Memorial, France.
Also named on the Trinity Church memorial in Jedburgh Old and Trinity Church.

John Brunton – age 38 – Lance Corporal (S/5197) 1/5th Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
John was a stone-mason when he enlisted in September 1914. He landed with the 10th Gordon Highlanders at Boulogne in July 1915 but was wounded during the battle at Loos in September 1915 and admitted to hospital.
Born 1882 in Jedburgh. Son of the late Ormiston Brunton (died 1905) and of Betsy (Hinshelwood) Brunton of The Bow and of 18 Castlegate, Jedburgh.
Missing in Action on 28 July 1918 and named on the Soissons Memorial, Aisne, France.
Also named on a memorial in Jedburgh Old and Trinity Church.

Walder Brunton – age 26 – Private (S/22554) 2nd Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Walder was employed at Allars Mill in Jedburgh when he enlisted in September 1916. He was posted to his battalion in Salonica, Northern Greece but in September 1918, during an influenza epidemic, Walder was reported to be dangerously ill and he died in the 80th General Hospital at Kirechkoi.
Born 1891 in Jedburgh. Son of the late Ormiston Brunton (died 1905) and of Betsy (Hinshelwood) Brunton of The Bow and of 18 Castlegate, Jedburgh.
Died on Active Service on 2 October 1918 and buried in Kirechkoi-Hortakoi Military Cemetery, Greece.
Also named on a memorial in Jedburgh Old and Trinity Church and on the St.John's Episcopal Church memorial, The Pleasance, Jedburgh.


BUCHANAN, G.W.V. PTE. SC. RIFLS.
Note: I have no idea what the initial "V" stands for.
George William Buchanan – age 18 – Private (7106) 1/5th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
George had been educated at Rothesay Academy on Bute and at Shawlands Academy in Glasgow before attending The Royal Technical College (now Strathclyde University) and was an apprentice engineer when he enlisted in Glasgow at the outbreak of war. He was living with his family at 78 Prince Albert Street, Crosshill where his father was a teacher of physical training with the Glasgow School Board. George landed with his battalion at Le Havre in November 1914 but was killed three months later. He was buried in Rue-Marle Cemetery in La Chapelle-D'Armentieres but was re-interred in 1920.
Born 1897 in Jedburgh as George William Buchanan. Son of Colour Sergeant Thomas Buchanan, 7th KOSB, and of Janet (Oliver) Buchanan.
Killed in Action on 26 January 1915 and buried in Houplines Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
Also named on the Glasgow Roll of Honour, on the Burgh of Rothesay War Memorial & Roll of Honour, on The Royal Technical College Roll of Honour and on the Shawlands Academy memorial.

James Budd – age 31 – Corporal (9714) 1st Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
James was a railway brakesman, living at Baillies Causeway in Hamilton when he married in 1913.
Born 1886 in Sunderland, County Durham. Son of James and Hannah Isabel (Kirton) Budd of 2 Water Works Road, Sunderland, County Durham. Husband of Mary Ann (Turnbull) Budd of Old Bongate, of Bridge Street and of Maitland House, Jedburgh who he married in 1913 in Hamilton, Lanarkshire.
Missing in Action on 20 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Caledonian Railway Company memorial in Glasgow Central Station.


CAIRNS, A. T. PTE. ROYAL SCOTS.
Alexander Taylor Cairns – age 19 – Private (35723) 11th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Alexander was employed at a draper in Canongate, Jedburgh when he enlisted as Private (25021) in the King's Own Scottish Borderers but he was posted to the Royal Scots in France.
Born 1897 in Maxton, Roxburghshire. Son of Thomas and Isabella (Tully) Cairns, formerly of Bonjedward, and of Boundaries, Jedburgh.
Died of Wounds on 20 September 1917 and buried in Mendinghem Military Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on a memorial in Jedburgh Old and Trinity Church.

Killed in Action on 27 August 1918 and buried in H.A.C. Cemetery, Ecoust-St. Mein, France.

CAMPBELL, AND. GUNNER, R. F. A.
Andrew Campbell – age 32 – Gunner (46195) 26th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery.
Andrew had served in the army before the war and in 1911 was with 63 Battery in India. He was a reservist and was recalled at the outbreak of the war. He was a mason to trade and he had been working for the Ancient Monuments Commission on Jedburgh Abbey. Newspaper reports show his unit as 367 Battery, 146 Brigade, 28th Division and records show that Andrew landed with 146 Brigade at Le Havre in January 1915. Andrew was fatally wounded by a poison gas shell at Ypres.
Born 1883 in Jedburgh. Son of the late Agnes (Thomson) Campbell (died 1908) and of the late James Campbell (died 1914)
Died of Wounds on 3 May 1915 and buried in Poperinghe Old Military Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on a memorial in Jedburgh Old and Trinity Church.


CAMPBELL, HON. J. B. DSO. CPT. COLDS. GDS.
The Hon. John Beresford Campbell, Distinguished Service Order – age 48 – Captain, 1st Battalion, Coldstream Guards.
Gentleman Cadet John Beresford Campbell, from the Royal Military College, was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Coldstream Guards in March 1887 and by 1901 he was a Captain in the Guards Reserve. In 1911 he was living with his wife and family in Kylebroghlan, Moycullen, County Galway, Ireland. He joined his battalion in France in November 1914 and was awarded a DSO for “gallantry in the operations at Givenchy, 21st to 23rd December, 1914 when he handled his Company with great efficiency.” John was killed a month later.
Born 1866 in Westminster, London. Eldest son of Hallyburton George Campbell, 3rd Baron Stratheden and Campbell, and Louisa Mary Beresford (Hope) Campbell, Lady Stratheden and Campbell. Husband of Alice Susan (Hamilton) Campbell, Lady Stratheden and Campbell of Hartrigge and of Hunthill, Jedburgh who he married in 1895 in London.
Missing in Action on 25 January 1915 and named on the Le Touret Memorial, France.
Also named on a memorial in Jedburgh Old and Trinity Church and on the St.John's Episcopal Church memorial, The Pleasance, Jedburgh.

His son Donald also fell.

Donald Campbell – age 20 – Lieutenant, 3rd Battalion, Coldstream Guards.

Born 1896 in London. Son of the late Captain the Hon. John Beresford Campbell, D.S.O., Coldstream Guards and the Hon. Alice Susan (Hamilton) Campbell, Lady Stratheden and Campbell of Hartrigge and of Hunthill, Jedburgh.
Killed in Action on 19 July 1916 and buried in Essex Farm Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on a memorial in Jedburgh Old and Trinity Church and on the St.John's Episcopal Church memorial, The Pleasance, Jedburgh.

James Cassie – age 24 – Private (11639) Scots Guards.
James had been a constable in the Roxburghshire Constabulary since August 1911 and for some time was based in Jedburgh. He was granted permission to enlist in October 1914 and was in training at Caterham, Godstone in Surrey when he became ill and died.
Born 1890 in Legerwood, Berwickshire. Son of John and Mary (Henderson) Cassie of 72 Forest Road, Selkirk.
Died on Service on 25 January 1915 and buried in Selkirk Cemetery, Selkirkshire. (CWG)
Also named on a memorial in Jedburgh Old and Trinity Church and on the Selkirk War Memorial and Roll of Honour.


COCHRANE, ROBT. PTE. K. O. S. B.
Robert Cochrane – age 19 – Private (200696) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert was employed at Oxnam Neuk Dairy when he enlisted in November 1914. As Private (7174) he joined his battalion in Egypt and served in Palestine where he was fatally wounded at Gaza.
Born 1898 in Dunlop, Ayrshire. Son of Robert and Mary (Heron) Cochrane of Abbey Bridge End, Jedburgh.
Died of Wounds on 20 April 1917 and buried in Deir El Belah War Cemetery, Palestine.
Also named on a memorial in Jedburgh Old and Trinity Church.

CRANSTON, A. D. PTE. K. O. S. B.
Andrew Douglas Cranston – age 28 – Private (899) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Andrew volunteered for overseas service in September 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1887 in Jedburgh. Son of Andrew Douglas Cranston and Margaret (Young) Cranston of 5 Boundaries, Jedburgh.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on a memorial in Jedburgh Old and Trinity Church.


CROZIER, G. S. PTE. R. SCOTS.
George Sinton Crozier – age 22 – Private (41832) 1/9th (Highlanders) Battalion, Royal Scots.
George was a gardener at Hartrigge, Jedburgh when he enlisted in November 1915. He was mobilised as Private (34964) in the Scottish Rifles in May 1917. When he arrived in France he was transferred to the 11th Royal Scots in November 1917 but was wounded in March 1918. When he recovered he was posted to 1/9th Royal Scots but he was attached to 185th Tunnelling Company of the Royal Engineers when he was killed. George was reported missing but his remains were identified in 1919.
Born 1897 in Jedburgh as George Crozier. Son of the late Adam Crozier (died 1905) and of Eliza (Sinton) of Richmond Row and of Canongate, Jedburgh.
Killed in Action on 1 August 1918 and buried in Raperie British Cemetery, Villemontoire, Aisne, France.

William Sinton Crozier – age 20 – Private (12844) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William landed with his battalion at Bolougne in May 1915 but he was killed four months later during the battle of Loos. William was buried on the battlefield but his grave was lost.
Born 1895 in Jedburgh as William Crozier. Son of the late Adam Crozier (died 1905) and of Eliza (Sinton) of Richmond Row and of Canongate, Jedburgh.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the St. John's Episcopal Church memorial, The Pleasance, Jedburgh.

DICKSON, ROBT. PTE. K. O. S. B.

Born 1887 in Jedburgh. Son of Isabella Dickson of Richmond Row and of 13 Old Bridgend, Jedburgh.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Trinity Church memorial in Jedburgh Old and Trinity Church and on the North British Railway Company memorial in Edinburgh Waverley Station.
The Jedburgh Railway Company was absorbed by the North British Railway by Act of 3 July 1860 and from that time the line was simply a branch of the North British.


DOCHERTY, W. M. L.C. K. O. S. B.
Note: until 1901 civil records show the family name as Dougherty.
Walter Docherty – age 33 – Lance Corporal (13957) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Walter served his apprenticeship as a tailor in Jedburgh but he was working in the mines at Gorebridge in Midlothian when he enlisted there in September 1914. He landed with the 7th KOSB at Boulogne in July 1915 and was wounded at Loos in September. Walter suffered two further woundings before he was killed.
Born 1883 in Cavers, Roxburghshire . (Indexed as Dougherty)
Son of the late Margaret (Murray) Docherty (died 1911) and of Thomas Docherty of Exchange Street, Jedburgh.
Killed in Action on 2 July 1917 and buried in Roclincourt Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on a memorial in Jedburgh Old and Trinity Church.


DODDS, H. W. PTE. BL. WATCH.
Harry William Dodds – age 21 – Private (S/12511) 1/6th (Perthshire) Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
“Harry Willie” was being trained in his father's bakery and confectionery business in Jedburgh when he enlisted on his 19th birthday in January 1915. He joined the 9th Black Watch in France but he suffered shell-shock and was in hospitals in France and England from November 1916 until March 1917. Harry returned to France in May but was killed two months later.
Born 1896 in Gordon, Berwickshire as Henry William Dodds. Son of James and Mary (Smith) Dodds of 19 Canongate, Jedburgh.
Missing in Action on 31 July 1917 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on a memorial in Jedburgh Old and Trinity Church.

Andrew James Easton, Meritorious Service Medal – age 25 – Lance Corporal (05072) Royal Army Ordnance Corps.
In 1901 Andrew aged 5 was living with his mother and the rest of his family at 70 Castlegate, Jedburgh. His parents, William and Maggie, had married in Jedburgh in 1891.
The announcement of Andrew's award of the MSM as Private (Acting Lance Corporal) Andrew James Easton of Hawick was made in January 1919. He was discharged to the Army Reserve in May 1919 but he died of cardiac valvular disease at the family home at 23 Wilton Crescent, Hawick.
Born 1895 in Wilton, Hawick, Roxburghshire. Son of William and Maggie (Robson) Easton of 23 Wilton Crescent, Hawick.
Died on 16 December 1920 and buried in Hawick Wilton Cemetery.
Also named on the Wilton Parish Church memorial as Andrew J. Easton.


ELLIOT, F. H. TPR. SC. HORSE.
Frank Hall Elliot – age 34 – Driver (208654) 13th Pontoon Park, Royal Engineers.
Frank was a groom at Newton Don Stables near Kelso when he enlisted as Private (4873) in the 1/2nd Scottish Horse Yeomanry in October 1914. He joined his unit in Egypt in February 1916 and later transferred to the Engineers. Frank contracted malaria and died in Kantara.
Born 1883 at Earlsheugh, Jedburgh as Francis Hall. Son of Elizabeth Hall. Adopted son of Robert and Margaret Hall (Rutherford) Elliot of Burgh View and of "Mayfield," Jedburgh.
Died on Active Service on 6 October 1918 and buried in Kantara War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
Also named on a memorial in Jedburgh Old and Trinity Church.


FAIR, JOS. SAPR. R. E.
Joseph Fair – age 37 – Sapper (WR/296357) 107th Railway Company, Royal Engineers.
Joseph was employed on the Hartrigge Estate, Jedburgh when he enlisted as Driver (026029) in the Army Service Corps in November 1914. At some point he transferred to the Royal Engineers as Sapper (164023) and joined the Light Railway Operating Company in Salonica, northern Greece. Joseph died in the 42nd General Hospital.
Born 1881 in Coldingham, Berwickshire. Son of the late George Fair (died 1911) and of Margaret (Shearlaw) Fair, of Cherry Tree Cottage, Grantshouse, Coldingham, Berwickshire.
Died on Service on 18 December 1918 and buried in Mikra British Cemetery, Kalamaria, Greece.
