Holy Rood Scottish Episcopal Church , Maule Street, Carnoustie has a war memorial to the Casualties of the Congregation within the church itself . It lists the names of the casualties .

I a number of years ago got access via the then minister but he has moved and I hear there is now a new female minister in situ . I had the "old" film camera then but I hope to go and get in using the diggy camera ..

The Carnoustie war memorial unveiled at HOLY ROOD - Scottish Episcopal church - was unveiled by GENERAL SIR FRANCIS DAVIES , Scottish Command . Canon The Rev J B Jobberns presided . The Memorial consisted of a Bronze Tablet mounted on Marble . The work of Messrs A R Moybray & Co , London and Oxford. It is set on the North wall of the Church ,, The ex service members of the Holy Rood Church under Major Ransall of the RE acted as Body guard to General Davies .
The Tablet was dedicated by The Most Rev Bishop Robberts of Brechin , Primus and lists the following
To the Glory of God , and in Honoured memory of the men of this church who gave their lives for King and Country in the Great War 1914-1918 :

GEORGE APPLEBY; GEORGE B. AIKENHEAD BAILIE ; JOHN BUTCHART ; GEORGE RICHARD CARTER ; WILLIAM SMALL COCHRANE ; DOUGLAS HOWARD DUNCAN ; JAMES NICOLL GIBSON ; ALFRED GOOCH; JAMES SAMSON MANBY; ERNEST RODGER MARQUIS ; JOHN MCD . McLACHLAN; DAVID MILL; WILLIAM MOSS OGG ; DAVID RAMSAY; RALPH WILSON ROBERTSON ; WILLIAM RICHARD SCHOFIELD ; ALBERT EDWARD SIMPSON; and ROBERT STEWART . " Their Memory liveth for evermore

church memorial :

JOHN BUTCHART :

CWGC : Pte 1163 , J BUTCHART , "C" Coy, 1st Bn the Black Watc (Royal Highlanders ) died 26th April 1916 , aged 26 years , Buried Bully- Grenay Communal Cemetery French extention, Pas De Calais, France Grave B 2 , son of Mr and Mrs William Butchart, of The Anchorage Barry Road Carnoustie Forfarshire , native of Bridge of Don , aberdeen

Scottish National War Memorial Edinburgh Castle :

BUTCHART , john , born bridge of don, aberdeenshire , 1163, pte , kia F & F , 26th April 1916 , 1st Battalion.

** Please note the SNWM shows just now this entry as BUTCHER John etc but this is being corrected on the roll wihen it is next updated , the correction has been approved by the Trustees of the SNWM during Sept 2023 .

Even the Soldiers died in the Great War Black Watch lists this casualty as BUTCHER and also the Book "history of the BW in the great war edited by Major General Wauchope have the 1st Bn casualties record this soldier as being BUTCHER .

The birth certificate record that birth of John BUTCHART 21st June 1890 at coastguard station Bridge of Don .
