Parish of Cults - Fife

The Parish of Cults war memorial is a freestone shrine of classical design standing within it own railed enclosure in front of the kirk.
The commemoration with a carved wreath are carved in stone on thee face of the arch and reads:
TO THE
GLORY OF GOD
AND IN MEMORY OF
THE MEN OF THIS PARISH
WHO DIED
IN THE GREAT WAR
1914 1919
The names of the dead are listed on two bronze plaques set on the face.
A small additional bronze plaque reads:

There are 3 Baynes listed on this small memorial - the likelihood is that Alexander is related in some way to William and Herriot?

Thanks to Mrs Aase Goldsmith for photographs and additional information.
I think they add to what others have already posted.
The memorial is situated in front of The Sir David Wilkie Memorial Hall - not a kirk - on Ladybank Road, Pitlessie.

Hi everyone

I'm new to this forum but this is "my" war memorial. I've been researching the names for a number of years and have visited the majority of the men's graves or commemoration sites. As you can see from the information Herriot and William Bayne were brothers. Alexander Bayne was their cousin. As it happens, I've visited all three graves.

I thought you might be the chap Willie McFarlane mentioned to me!

Yes, Willie found a photo of him in his police uniform when he joined in 1892? (from memory not got files in front of me). I also got his address then & at the time of the 1901 census (in Dundee). He left the police in 1908 (that's why he's not on the police memorial in Bell St) I'm assuming at this stage that he joined the army then - as he was in the 1st Bat Scots Guards I'm saving up to hopefully get his service records at some stage. He was KIA 15/09/16 & I'm fairly confident that it was at Battle of Flers- Courcelette (the first involving tanks). Further reading & service records will I hope confirm the details. He is one of the many with no known grave & is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. I've a pic of his name on it. I also think Andrew Carstairs may be his brother, but it's a bit unclear. Alex Carstairs also may be brother or cousin perhaps, I've found a David Carstairs also served in war but survived! - he was definitely Thos Carstairs brother. A slight tangle to sort out - more happy hours poring over the local papers - again!
I'm just doing my bit, as you are, to make sure these men are remembered.
