This is a gem for me. Although Guardbridge is in Leuchars Parish this memorial is specifically for the men from the village, which obviously took the form of an institute at one time.
I had a look at the Leuchars Memorial and all but two of the men are listed there viz;
Gowans, Reg. N. S. (M.M. & Bar)
Name: GOWANS
Initials: R
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Serjeant
Regiment/Service: Machine Gun Corps (Infantry)
Unit Text: 54th Coy.
Age: 22
Date of Death: 11/12/1917
Service No: 4051
Awards: M M and Bar
Additional information: Son of Nellie and the late John Gowans, of Brixton Bank, Guardbridge, Fife.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: XV. F. 12.
Cemetery: DOZINGHEM MILITARY CEMETERY
Born: Shotley Bridge, Durham
and
Mackie, James
No positive i.d. |

From internet searching, it looks like there was a Memorial Institute in the town from 1921-1958. The pieces that make up the current memorial were then moved to the small church in the town, which itself closed in 1999 and was remodelled as a private residence. It is easy for memorials to get lost as buildings are demolished or change use, that the current memorial has such a tasteful and tranquil setting is a minor triumph.
Despite the church in the town, Guardbridge seems to have come under the parish of Leuchars, and the near complete overlap between the names on this memorial and the WW1 names on the Leuchars one likely helps explain the lack of WW2 memorial in Guardbridge. |
