KELSO TOWN and DISTRICT WW1 WAR MEMORIAL.

1939 -1945.


RADIO OFFICER IAN LYLE
.
Ian Lyle – age 20 – Third Radio Officer, S.S. Umona, Merchant Navy.
Ian was employed as an electrician in Kelso before he joined the Merchant Navy in 1940. The “Umona” sailing from Durban, South Africa to London with a cargo of maize, was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-124 off the coast of Sierra Leone.
Born 1920 at Nisbet Mill in Crailing, Roxburghshire. Son of Thomas and Isabella (Veitch) Lyle of Broadloan, Kelso, of Eccles Mains Farm and of Greenlaw, Berwickshire.
Killed by enemy action/ Lost at Sea on 30 March 1941 and named on the Tower Hill Memorial, London.
Also named on the Kelso High School memorial

SGT. AIR GUNNER ALEXANDER LYLE.

Alexander Lyle – age 22 – Sergeant/Wireless Operator/Air Gunner (1067838) 101 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Alexander's Wellington bomber had taken off from RAF Bourn in Cambridgeshire for a raid on Hamburg but the aircraft crashed near Bremen. The crew were buried in Delmenhorst but were re-interred in Becklingen in August 1946.
Born 1920 at Nisbet Mill in Crailing, Roxburghshire. Son of Thomas and Isabella (Veitch) Lyle of Broadloan, Kelso, of Eccles Mains Farm and of Greenlaw, Berwickshire.
Killed in Action on 27 July 1942 and buried in Becklingen War Cemetery, Germany.


W.O. NAVIGATOR ALLAN A. W. MELROSE.
Alan Andrew Watt Melrose – age 23 – Warrant Officer/Navigator/Wireless Operator (1344712) 141 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Alan worked in the Commercial Bank in Kelso before he enlisted in 1941. He had served in the Middle East and Malta before joining 141 Squadron. His Mosquito fighter/bomber had taken off from RAF West Raynham in Norfolk to support the main bomber stream by attacking enemy night fighters and airfields but the aircraft crashed to the west of Ypres and Alan and his pilot were killed.
Born 1921 in Morningside, Edinburgh as Alan. Son of the late George Watt Melrose (died 1937) and of Hannah Matthew (Williamson) Melrose of St. James Place, Kelso.
Killed in Action on 28 June 1944 and buried in Wevelgem Communal Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Kelso High School memorial and on the Commercial Bank Memorial now in the RBS HQ at Gogarburn, Edinburgh.


SGT. W.O. AIR GUNNER WILLIAM P. MORRISON.
William Paton Morrison – age 23 – Sergeant/Wireless Operator (1354746) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
William was a cricketer with the Kelso club and was employed in the Royal Bank of Scotland in Kelso when he enlisted in 1940. He was a crewman on an Anson of the Central Navigation School at RAF Cranage near Middlewich in Cheshire when the aircraft crashed near Northwich.
Born 1920 in Kelso. Son of John Miller Morrison and Margaret Sim (Lang) Morrison of 14 Inch Park, Kelso.
Died on Service on 17 June 1943 and buried in Kelso Cemetery. (CWG)
Also named on the Kelso High School memorial and on the RBS Roll of Honour.

STOKER JAMES MUIR.
James Muir – age 35 – Stoker 2nd Class (LT/KX 115114) H.M.S. Cervantes, Royal Naval Patrol Service.
James of 11 Grovehill, Kelso was returning to his ship with two crew mates when their dingy capsized near Elmley Ferry on the River Swale in Kent. The “Cervantes” was a motor boat of the Medway Motor Boat Patrol operating out of HMS Wildfire, the Royal Navy Shore Establishment at Sheerness Royal Dockyard.
Born 1907 in Kelso. Son of William and Nellie or Ellen (Hyslop) of 11 Grovehill, Kelso.
Died on Service on 3 November 1942 and buried in Gillingham (Woodlands) Cemetery, Kent.
Also named on the Kelso High School memorial


SAPPER JOHN B. MURRAY.
John Bell Murray – age 20 – Sapper (14681264) 908 Port Operating Company, Royal Engineers.
John died at Menteng Pulau, Java.
Born 1925 in Kelso. Son of Thomas Reid Murray and Janet Oliphant (Reilly) Murray of Kelso.
Died on Service on 21 June 1946 and buried in Jakarta War Cemetery, Indonesia.

PTE. ROBERT T. MURRAY.
Robert Thomas Murray – age 21 – Private (3192790) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert worked as a grocer in Kelso when he enlisted in 1939. He was an active member of the Wheelers Cycling Club along with his friends Alexander Gibb and James Ker who were killed in the same incident.
In 1939 a building known as Yates Retreat, in the village of Theydon Bois near Epping in Essex, was requisitioned as accommodation for the 6th KOSB who were engaged on security and other duties in the area. In the early hours of 18 November 1940 a German parachute mine dropped by the Luftwaffe struck the Retreat killing thirty men and injuring many others.
Born 1919 in Kelso. Son of the late David Murray and of Agnes Murray of 45 Grovehill, Kelso.
Killed by enemy action on 18 November 1940 and buried in Kelso Cemetery. (CWG)

C.P.O. WALTER PATTERSON.
Walter Patterson – age 35 – Chief Stoker (P/KX 76713) H.M.S. Stronghold, Royal Navy.
Walter was a Leading Stoker in the Royal Navy when he married in Kelso in 1932.
The destroyer “Stronghold” had been based at Hong Kong in 1939 before moving to Singapore. After war with Japan was declared in December 1941 she escorted convoys to Australia until she was attacked and sunk by the heavy cruiser “Maya” and two destroyers from a Japanese carrier force operating south of Java.
Born 1906 in Edinburgh. Son of Henry Patterson and Helen Noble (Pringle) Patterson. Husband of Evelyn Grace (Wight) Patterson of Eastney, Hampshire who he married in 1932 in Kelso.
Killed in Action/Lost at Sea on 2 March 1942 and named on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire.
Also named on the Kelso High School memorial


L/CORPL. JAMES M. S. PIERCY.
James Miller Stuart Piercy – age 28 – Private (3185799) 13th Battalion, The King's Regiment (Liverpool)
James was employed as an engineer in Kelso when he enlisted in 1933. He had been in India with the 2nd King's Own Scottish Borderers since 1938 but later transferred to The King's Liverpool Regiment. After Japan occupied Burma in 1942, the Allies formed a unit intended to penetrate deep behind Japanese lines from India. The 13th King's provided the majority of the British contingent for the "Chindits". Organised into two groups, the Chindits' first operation (codenamed Longcloth) began on 8 February 1943 by crossing the Chindwin River and advancing into Burma.
Born 1914 in Berwick, Northumberland. Son of the late William Piercy and of Christina (Stewart) Piercy of 3 Rutherford Place, Kelso.
Missing in Action on 28 March 1943 and named on the Rangoon Memorial, Myanmar.
Also named on the Kelso High School memorial and the St. Andrews Church Memorial as KOSB.


SGT. REAR GUNNER WILLIAM PRATT.
William Pratt – age 20 – Sergeant/Air Gunner (1570343) 178 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
By July 1944, 178 Squadron, flying Liberator bombers, had moved to Amendola in the Foggia basin, Italy and, as well as carrying out bombing missions over Italy and the Balkans, the squadron was actively involved in the air drop operations in support of the besieged Polish Home Army in Warsaw.
William's aircraft crashed there and the crew were buried in the Warsaw Military Cemetery but were re-interred in Krakow in July 1948.
Born 1924 in Kelso. Son of James and Beatrice Watt (Young) Pratt of Kelso.
Killed in Action on 15 August 1944 and buried in Krakow Rakowicki Cemetery, Poland.

DRIVER ALFRED C. RICHARDSON.
Alfred Carlyle Richardson – age 36 – Driver (T/235403) Royal Army Service Corps attached to the
Royal Artillery.
Alfred died while a prisoner of war at Lintang Camp, Kutching, Borneo and was re-interred at Labuan in September 1946.
Born 1909 in Gordon, Berwickshire. Son of the late Annie Scott (Chalmers) Richardson (died 1935) and of John Henry Richardson of Kelso. Husband of Elizabeth Jean (Richardson) Richardson who he married in 1939 in Kelso.
Died on Service on 16 June 1945 and buried in Labuan War Cemetery, Malaysia.
Also named on the Kelso High School memorial


PTE. JAMES ROBERTSON.
James Robertson – age 19 – Private (14314161) 5th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
James was a well known local athlete who joined the King's Own Scottish Borderers in October 1942. Later he transferred to the 5th Black Watch and landed on Sicily on 10 July 1943. James was fatally wounded during the battle for the Sferro Hills.
Born 1923 in Kelso. Son of Mr. and Mrs. James Robertson of 122 Orchard Park, Kelso.
Died of Wounds on 2 August 1943 and buried in Catania War Cemetery, Sicily, Italy.
Also named on the Kelso High School memorial.


3rd ENGINEER THOMAS J. SEAR.
Thomas James Sear – age 25 – Third Engineer Officer, M.V. Diala, Merchant Navy.
The tanker “Diala” was sailing from the UK to the USA when she was torpedoed by the German submarine U-553 in the Atlantic east of Newfoundland. The ship was abandoned by most of the crew but the lifeboats were never found.
Born 1917 in Ravensworth, Chester-le-Street, Durham. Son of the late Thomas Sear, gamekeeper at Spylaw, Kelso (died 1940) and of Emma (Oakley) Sear of Racecourse House, Kelso.
Killed by enemy action/Lost at Sea on 15 January 1942 and named on the Tower Hill Memorial, London,
Also named on the Kelso High School memorial and the St. Andrews Church Memorial.

PTE. COLIN STEWART.
Colin Stewart – age 23 – Private (3193068) 5th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Colin served his apprenticeship as a painter in Kelso and had been in the army for just seven months when he landed with his battalion at St. Malo in Brittany on 13 June 1940. The 5th KOSB was the covering battalion during the withdrawal to Cherbourg, and itself left on 18 June.
Born 1917 in Bellingham, Northumberland. Son of John and Emily Eleanor (Pyle) Stewart of 10 Roxburgh Street, Kelso.
Died of Wounds on 18 June 1940 and buried in Cherbourg Old Communal Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Kelso High School memorial.


MAJOR JOHN STORMONTH – DARLING, D.F.C.
John Sayer Stormonth-Darling, Distinguished Flying Cross – age 30 – Major (77297) 79 (The Scottish Horse) Medium Regiment, Royal Artillery attached to 655 Air Observation Post Squadron, Royal Air Force.
John was educated at Winchester College from 1928. On leaving in 1933 he joined Barclays Bank and in 1939 he was sent to Canada, but came back in September to join his territorial cavalry regiment, the Scottish Horse, into which he had been commissioned in October 1938. The Scottish Horse were converted into artillery in 1939, and he served with them until being promoted to Captain in 1941. He then volunteered as an Air Observation pilot, spotting targets and fall of shot for artillery units, and was attached to the RAF in 1942, serving with an AOP squadron in both North Africa and Italy in 1943, and acted as a personal pilot for Army HQ in Italy in 1944. By 1945 he was in command of 655 AOP Squadron RAF in Northern Italy where he was killed as the result of an accident. John was awarded a DFC “in recognition of gallant and distinguished services in Italy” after his death.
Born 1914 in Roxburgh. Son of Robert and Beryl Madeline (Sayer) Stormonth-Darling of Rosebank, Kelso.
Died on Service on 1 August 1945 and buried in Udine War Cemetery, Italy.
Also named on the Kelso High School memorial and the St. Andrews Church Memorial.


PTE. GEORGE D. TAIT.
George Dickson Tait – age 27 – Private (3185752) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
The 1st KOSB embarked for France in 1939. They crossed the Belgian frontier in May 1940 and then they were ordered to withdraw. Fighting their way to the coast, on the night of 31 May they were evacuated from the beaches of Dunkirk.
Born 1913 in Kelso. Son of James Tait and Lillias Russell (Dickson or Pringle) Tait of Mayfield, Kelso,
Killed in Action on 31 May 1940 and buried in Adinkerke Military Cemetery, Belgium (just east of Dunkirk)

GUARDSMAN WILLIAM THOMSON.
William Thomson – age 35 – Guardsman (2699612) 1st Battalion, Scots Guards.
William left Jedburgh when he was 13 and was employed by Roxburgh Count Council when he enlisted. He was fatally wounded and died three days later in hospital in Naples.
Born 1909 in Jedburgh, Roxburghshire. Son of the late Jessie Walker (Cockburn) Thomson (died 1921) and of Richard Thomson. Husband of Edith (Crozier) Thomson of 25 Horse Market, Kelso who he married in 1937 in Kelso.
Died of Wounds on 6 June 1944 and buried in Naples War Cemetery, Italy.
Also named on the Kelso High School memorial.


PTE. ROBERT TURNBULL.
Robert Turnbull – age 29 – Private (3323679) 1st Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Robert was employed as a painter in Kelso before working in London. He moved to Glasgow in 1940 and joined the Argylls. Robert served in North Africa before being killed during the landing of his battalion on Sicily.
Born 1914 in Kelso. Son of William Innes Turnbull and Jean or Jane Gray (Pirie) Turnbull of Winchester Row, Kelso.
Missing in Action on 10 July 1943 and named on the Cassino Memorial, Italy.
Also named on the Kelso High School memorial.


PILOT OFFICER CHARLES R. H. UNDERWOOD.
Charles Richard Hamilton Underwood – age 21 – Pilot Officer (49700) 203 Squadron, Royal Air Force.
Charles was educated at Kelso High School and he joined the RAF before the start of the war. By 1942 he was a Warrant Officer/Observer (580987) with 203 Squadron, who were flying Bristol Blenheim and Martin Maryland light bombers from bases in Egypt and Palestine, from where it took part in the invasion of Syria, and then flew reconnaissance patrols over the Eastern Mediterranean. Charles was commissioned in June 1942 but his Maryland was shot down by a German fighter on maritime reconnaissance mission between Greece and Crete.
Born 1921 in South Shields, County Durham. Son of the late Roger Hamilton Underwood (died 1921) and of Hilda May (Street) Underwood of Floors Gardens. Kelso and of Yetholm, Roxburghshire. Step-son of the late Charles Edwin Underwood. Hilda May married her brother-in-law in 1924 in South Shields. (see below)
Missing in Action on 28 July 1942 and named on the Alamein Memorial, Egypt.
Also named on the Kelso High School memorial and the St. Andrews Church Memorial.

Charles Edwin Underwood – age 38 – Master, S.S. Leo Dawson, Merchant Navy.
The merchant ship “Leo Dawson” was sailing with a cargo of iron ore from Narvik, Norway to Immingham when she was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-37 off Bressay in the Shetlands
Born 1901 in Spennymoor, Auckland, County Durham. Son of George Douglas Underwood and of Annie (Lythe) Underwood. Husband of Hilda May (Street) Underwood of Floors Gardens. Kelso and of Yetholm, Roxburghshire who he married in 1924 in South Shields, County Durham.
Killed by enemy action/Lost at Sea on 29 January 1940 and named on the Tower Hill Memorial, London.

SGT. AIR GUNNER THOMAS B. UTTERSON.
Thomas Burton Utterson – age 30 – Sergeant/Air Gunner (1828218) 226 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Thomas was a slater, living at 49 Horse Market in Kelso, when he married in 1933.
In 1944 226 Squadron became part of the 2nd Tactical Air Force, operating in support of the Normandy invasions. The squadron moved to France in October 1944, flying their B25 Mitchell Bombers from Vitry-en-Artois near Arras in support of the advancing Allied armies.
Born 1914 in Kelso. Son of Alexander and Lucinda (Burton) Utterson of Kelso. Husband of Elizabeth (White) Utterson who he married in 1933 in Edinburgh.
Killed in Action on 26 November 1944 and buried in Deventer (Raalterweg) General Cemetery, Netherlands.
Also named on the Kelso High School memorial.


PTE. JOHN VEITCH.
John Young Veitch – age 21 – Private (3188895) Royal Scots and No.2 Commando.
On 3 September 1943 the commando landed to the west of the Salerno in Italy before moving inland and ten days later they defended the village of Dragone against the attacking German paratroopers and panzergrenadiers. John was killed and buried there but was re-interred in Salerno in April 1944.
Born 1921 in Kelso. Son of Thomas and Agnes (Young) Veitch of 61 Orchard Park, Kelso.
Killed in Action on 13 September 1943 and buried in Salerno War Cemetery, Italy.
Also named on the Kelso High School memorial.


2nd LIEUT. ANDREW M. WATSON.
Andrew McKenzie Watson – age 28 – Lieutenant (258824) Royal Army Ordnance Corps.
Andrew was an accountant with the Commercial Bank of Scotland in the Comrie branch, in Perthshire when he joined the army at the beginning of the war. He was commissioned in the RAOC in January 1943. He had been a keen rugby player with Kelso and the Harlequins but after visiting home on leave he contracted pneumonia and died in a Military Hospital in Northern Ireland.
Born 1915 in Kelso. Son of James Murray Watson and Catherine Scott (Allan) Watson of The Tofts, Kelso.
Died on Service on 10 August 1943 and buried in Kelso Cemetery. (CWG)
Also named on the Kelso High School memorial and on the Commercial Bank Memorial now in the RBS HQ at Gogarburn, Edinburgh.


GUNNER ANDREW WEATHERSTON.
Andrew Weatherston – age 19 – Gunner (3190854) 417 Battery, 56 Searchlight Regiment, Royal Artillery.
Andrew was an apprentice plasterer when he enlisted. He died of tuberculosis in the Woodend Hospital in Aberdeen.
Born 1922 in Kelso. Son of William Allan Weatherston and Annie Riddle (Brown) Weatherston of 59 Orchard Park Kelso.
Died on Service on 19 March 1941 and buried in Kelso Cemetery. (CWG)
Also named on the Kelso High School memorial.
