KELSO TOWN and DISTRICT WW1 WAR MEMORIAL.

Three sons of the late Isabella (Fair) Watson (died 1897) and George Watson of of 126 Roxburgh Street, Kelso.

PTE. JAMES WATSON.
James Watson – age 27 – Private (S/14373) 7th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
James was a painter in Kelso when he enlisted in 1914. He joined his battalion in France in August 1915 but was killed less than two months later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1887 in Kelso.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.


PTE. ROBERT WATSON.
Robert Watson – age 21 – Private (351283) 1/9th (Highlanders) Battalion, Royal Scots.
Robert joined his battalion as Private (3830) in 1916.
Born 1895 in Kelso.
Died of Wounds on 4 August 1917 and buried in Mendinghem Military Cemetery, Belgium.


PTE. THOMAS WATSON.
Thomas Watson – age 23 – Private (S/13943) 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
Born 1893 in Kelso as Thomas Waddle Watson.
Missing in Action on 18 August 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.

PTE. GEORGE WEIR.
George Weir – age 38 – Private (40592) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
George was the farm steward at Woodside, Yetholm, Roxburghshire when he enlisted in July 1916. He was posted as Private (25445) to the 7th/8th King's Own Scottish Borderers in France on 5 October but was transferred to the 2nd RSF two weeks later. He was wounded on 31 October and died in the 43rd Casualty Clearing Station exactly a month after he had arrived in France.
Born 1878 in Morebattle, Roxburghshire. Son of George and Betsy or Elizabeth (Davidson) Weir of Woodside Farm and of Rutherford House, Yetholm.
Died of Wounds on 5 November 1916 and buried in Warlincourt Halte British Cemetery, Saulty, France.
Also named on the Morebattle Parish War Memorial.


PTE. ALEXANDER F. WHITELAW.
Alexander Francis Whitelaw – age 23 – Private (A24243 or 424243) 5th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
Alexander was a labourer when he enlisted at Minnedosa, Manitoba in December 1914. He sailed from Canada in March 1915 and joined his battalion in France in July. He was buried in Rosenberg Chateau Military Cemetery, Ploegsteert but was re-interred in 1930.
Born 1893 in Yetholm, Roxburghshire. Son of the late Thomas Whitelaw (died 1909) and of Elizabeth (Lillico) Whitelaw of Yetholm Mill.
Killed in Action on 6 March 1916 and buried in Berks Cemetery Extension, Belgium.
Also named on the Yetholm Parish War Memorial.


PTE. GEORGE H. WHITELAW.
George Hope Whitelaw – age 29 – Private (873) 42nd Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
George was educated in Jedburgh before he moved to St Pancras in London where in 1911 he was a grocer. He emigrated to Canada in May 1914 and became a policeman in Ottawa. He enlisted in the 2nd Reserve Park of the Canadian Army Service Corps in Montreal in December 1914. He sailed from Montreal in May 1915 and landed in France in September. George was transferred to the 42nd Royal Highlanders of Canada in October 1917 but was killed a month later at Passchendaele Ridge.
Born 1888 in Crailing, Roxburghshire. Son of Alexander Francis Whitelaw and of Margaret (Patterson) Whitelaw of Gateshaw, of Marchcleugh and of Caverton Mill, Eckford, Roxburghshire.
Missing in Action on 16 November 1917 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Eckford Parish War Memorial.


PTE. GEORGE T. WHITTLE.
George Thomas Whittle – age 19 – Private (201943) 1/6th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
George was a gardener at Ladykirk Hall, Berwickshire when he enlisted as Private (4070) in October 1916. He was posted to his battalion in France in November 1917 but he died in the 54th Casualty Clearing Station at Aire.
Born 1898 at Eglingham, New Bewick, Glendale, Northumberland. Son of the late Thomas Whittle (died 1903) and of Mary (Thompson) Whittle, and step-son of Walter Young of Eden Hall, Ednam, Roxburghshire and of Hoselaw, Ednam who had married Mary in 1906 in Rothbury, Northumberland.
Died of Wounds on 9 May 1918 and buried in Aire Communal Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Ednam Parish War Memorial and on the Ladykirk Parish War Memorial as George Whitlee, A.S.H.

CORPL. JOHN WIGHT.
John Wight – age 20 – Lance Corporal (200716) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was brought up by his grandparents John and Elizabeth Wight in Jedburgh, Roxburghshire. He was a farm servant at Whitton Farm, Morebattle, Roxburghshire when he enlisted in the 4th KOSB in November 1914. He was posted to the 7th/8th KOSB in France April 1917 but was wounded and gassed and then joined the 6th KOSB. John was killed near Meteren.
Born 1897 in Jedburgh, Roxburghshire. Son of Thomas and Alice Jane (Whitelaw) Wight. Nephew of Alexander Whitelaw of Marchcleuch Farm. Jedburgh who he named as his legatee.
Missing in Action on 18 August 1918 and named on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Morebattle Parish War Memorial and on the Jedburgh War Memorial.


PTE. ADAM W. WILSON.
Adam Waldie Wilson – age 25 – Private (18349) 9th Battalion, Machine Gun Corps.
Adam was living in the Kelso area when he enlisted and, as Private (11918) he landed in France with the 11th Battalion, Royal Scots, 9th (Scottish) Division, in May 1915. Later he joined the Division's MGC. Adam died in the 36th Casualty Clearing Station at Haringhe.
Born 1893 in Gordon, Berwickshire. Son of William and Robina (Mathieson) Wilson. Brother of Mrs. Janet (Wilson) Clark, of Jardine Hall, Lockerbie.
Died of Wounds on 25 April 1918 and buried in Haringhe (Bandaghem) Military Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Linton Parish War Memorial.


PTE. CHARLES WILSON.
Charles Wilson – age 24 – Private (14274) 1st Battalion, Scots Guards.
Born 1892 at the North Side Police Station in Ancrum, Roxburghshire.
Son of Alexander and Annie (Eadie) Wilson of Sheddon Park Lodge, Kelso.
Missing in Action on 13 September 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.

Joseph Wilson – age 22 – Private (7432) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Joseph was a cattleman at New Smailholm, Roxburghshire when he enlisted in the 4th KOSB in November 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was killed a month later during the battle of Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1893 in Carham, Glendale, Northumberland. Son of Joseph and Margaret (Wright) Wilson.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Smailholm Parish War Memorial.


PTE. ROBERT WILSON.
Thought to be:
Robert John Spence Wilson – age 26 – Private (29855) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert had been a gardener at Sunlaws House, Roxburgh for 9 years when he enlisted in the KOSB Reserve in December 1914.
Born 1890 at Fairnington Farm, Roxburgh, indexed as Robert Spencer Wilson. Son of Robert and Elizabeth (Cunningham) Wilson of Springwells Farm, Eccles, Berwickshire.
Missing in Action on 9 April 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Roxburgh Parish War Memorial and on the Eccles Parish War Memorial.


PTE. THOMAS WILSON.
Thomas Slater Wilson – age 23 – Private (56316) 52nd Battalion, Machine Gun Corps.
Thomas was a member of the Territorial 4th King's Own Scottish Borderers and was mobilised in August 1914. As Private (538) he landed with the 1/4th KOSB at Gallipoli in June 1915. He then served in Egypt and Palestine before the 52nd (Lowland) Division moved to France in April 1918. At some point Thomas had been transferred to the MGC of the Division.
Born 1894 in Crailing, Roxburghshire as Thomas Slater.
Son of Agnes (Slater) Wilson and step-son of William Wilson of Minto, Roxburghshire who had married in 1896 in Crailing.
Killed in Action on 2 June 1918 and buried in Thelus Military Cemetery, France.

William Wilson – age 23 – Private (12164) 1st Battalion, Scots Guards.
William enlisted at Earlston, Berwickshire in November 1914 and joined his battalion in France in June 1915 but was killed four months later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1892 in Bunkle and Preston near Duns, Berwickshire.
Son of James and Isabella (Hope) Wilson of Holefield, Sprouston near Kelso.
Missing in Action on 27 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial
Also named on the Earlston Parish War Memorial.


L/CORPL. FRANCIS M. WOOD.
Francis Melrose Wood – age 19 – Lance Corporal (729) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Frank was a member of the Territorial 4th King's Own Scottish Borderers and was mobilised in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was wounded later that month and evacuated to hospital in Malta. He rejoined his battalion but contracted pneumonia and died in hospital on the island of Lemnos.
Born 1897 at Newton Don in Nenthorn, Berwickshire.
Son of William and Margaret (Melrose) Wood of Newton Don near Kelso.
Died on Active Service on 4 December 1915 and buried in Portianos Military Cemetery, Lemnos, Greece.
Also named on the memorial in Kelso North Church.


PTE. JAMES WRIGHT.
James Wright – age 26 – Private (6833) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James, like his father, was a fishing tackle maker and was a player with the Kelso Rugby club when he enlisted in September 1914. He had previously served for 5 years with the Territorial 4th KOSB. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June but was he was wounded a month later during the battle of Achi Baba Nullah. James was evacuated to the 21st General Hospital in Alexandria where he died a week later.
Born 1889 in Kelso. Son of George and Margaret (Currie) Wright, of Tweedside, Sprouston, Roxburghshire.
Died of Wounds on 26 July 1915 and buried in Alexandria (Chatby) Military And War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
Also named on the Sprouston Parish War Memorial, on the Kelso High School memorial and on the memorial in Kelso North Church..

He then served in Egypt and in Palestine where he was wounded again and he died in the 54th Casualty Clearing Station at Deir el Belah.

Thought to be:
Christopher Young – age 23 – Private (200809) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
As Private (7383) Christopher landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915. He then served in Egypt and Palestine where he was wounded at Gaza. He died five days later in hospital at Kantara.
Born 1894 in Carrington, Midlothian. Son of Christopher and Sarah Jane (Tweddle) Young of Pirntaton, Fountainhall and of Ferniehurst, Stow, Galashiels, Selkirkshire.
Died of Wounds on 23 April 1917 and buried in Kantara War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
Also named on the Teviothead Parish War Memorial.


PTE JAMES YOUNG (KELSO)
James Young – age 37 – Private (301539) 1/9th (Highlanders) Battalion, Royal Scots.
Born 1881 in Kelso. Son of the late John Young (died 1893) and the late Annie (Cairns) Young (died 1918) formerly of Procters Smithy, Kelso. He named his sister Mary Young as his legatee.
Killed in Action on 1 August 1918 and buried in Raperie British Cemetery, Villemontoire, Aisne, France.


PTE. JAMES YOUNG. (MAKERSTOUN)
James Young – age 19 – Private (326587) 10th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
James was a ploughman at Greatridge Hall, Makerstoun, Roxburghshire when he enlisted in November 1914. He was posted as Private (S/6527) to the 11th Battalion, A&SH in France in October 1915 but was found to be underage (he was still 16) and he was returned to England in January 1916. He was transferred to the Reserve Battalion in February and then as Private (4881) to the 2/9th Battalion in October where he remained until August 1917 when he moved to the 2/8th Battalion. James was posted to the 1/8th A&SH in France in January 1918 but was transferred to the 10th A&SH and was killed three months later.
Born January 1899 in Greenlaw, Berwickshire as James Galbraith Young. Son of the late Thomas Young and of Jane (Galbraith) Young of Greatridge Hall, Makerstoun.
Killed in Action on 4 April 1918 and buried in Bienvillers Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Makerstoun Parish War Memorial.

Missing in Action on 19 August 1917 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Oxnam Parish War Memorial and on the Edgerston Parish War Memorial, Roxburghshire.

Thomas James Broomfield Young – age 19 – Lance Corporal (15750) 1st Battalion, Scots Guards.
Thomas was employed by the Kelso Gas Company when he enlisted.
Born 1898 in Eckford, Roxburghshire. Son of the late William Young, schoolmaster at Eckford (died 1908) and of Jessie Jane (Broomfield) Young of Belmont Place, Kelso.
Died of Wounds on 4 April 1918 and buried in Doullens Communal Cemetery Extension No.1, Somme, France.
Also named on the Kelso High School memorial.

KELSO TOWN and DISTRICT WW1 WAR MEMORIAL.

1939 -1945.

SGT. PILOT ADAM ANDERSON
.
Adam Anderson – age 20 – Sergeant/Pilot (1347713) 49 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Adam was on the staff of Kelso Post Office and played rugby for the Tweedside club. His Lancaster bomber had taken off from RAF Fiskerton in Lincolnshire for a raid on Stettin (now Szczecin, Poland) but was hit by anti-aircraft fire and crash landed near Stadil on the Danish west coast. Adam was badly injured and died some hours later in hospital. In all four of the crew were killed.
Born 1922 in Kelso. Son of James and Margaret Anderson, of Roxburgh Street, Kelso.
Died of Wounds on 21 April 1943 and buried in Lemvig Cemetery, Denmark.
Also named on the Kelso High School memorial.

Not listed by CWGC.
James Samuel Bews – age 19 – Apprentice, M.V. “British Valour”, Merchant Navy.
Known as Hamish, James was born and spent his early years in Stirling. The family moved to Kelso in 1927 where his father set up in business at 7 Bridge Street and they lived at 21 Forestfield. James died of septicaemia in the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow.
Born 1924 in Stirling. Son of James David Bews and of Agnes Hunter Isabell (Cruickshank) Bews of Forestfield, Kelso.
James and Agnes married in Stirling in 1922.
Died on 6 December 1943 and buried in the family plot in Kelso Cemetery.
Also named on the Kelso High School memorial.


SGT. OBSERVER FRANCIS BOLES.
Francis Boles – age 20 – Sergeant/Navigator (1349988) 138 Squadron (Special Duties) , Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Francis's Halifax bomber had taken off from RAF Tempsford in Bedfordshire on a supply mission for the Special Operations Executive. The aircraft was shot down and crashed at Ecorcei in Normandy.
Born 1922 in Kelso. Son of Francis and Beatrice (McCann) Boles of St Clare's, Kelso.
Killed in Action on 17 August 1943 and buried in Ecorcei Churchyard, Orne, France.
Also named on the Kelso High School memorial and on the St Mary's Roman Catholic Church memorial.

VOLUNTEER W. BROWN.
William Brown – age 28 – Volunteer, 4th Scottish Border Battalion, Home Guard.
William was acting as a marker on the rifle range at Marlfield, Eckford, Roxburghshire when he was wounded in the head by the accidental discharge of a rifle. He died in the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.
Born 1912 in Oxnam, Roxburghshire as William Anderson Brown. Son of John Anderson Brown and Isabella Thomson (Hogarth) Brown. Husband of Catherine Sked (Craig) Brown of Marlfield Cottage who he married in 1939 in Kelso.
Died of Wounds on 2 September 1940 and buried in Kelso Cemetery (CWG)
Also named on the Eckford Parish War Memorial and on the Eckford church memorial now in Eckford Community Hall as William Anderson Brown, Pte. Home Guard.


PILOT OFFICER STUART S. CAMPBELL, C.G.M.
Stuart Somerville Campbell, Conspicuous Gallantry Medal – age 22 – Pilot Officer (184644) 39 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Stuart was brought up in Kelso and went to Edinburgh to study the stationery trade.
In early 1944, flying Bristol Beaufighters, 39 Squadron moved from North Africa to Sardinia and then to the Italian mainland to attack targets in the Adriatic and on the Yugoslav coast. It also flew night intruder raids over northern Italy. During this time Stuart was awarded a Conspicuous Gallantry Medal (Flying) as Flight Sergeant (I555I02) Stuart Somerville Campbell, 39 Sqn.
“This airman has proved himself to be a valiant and devoted member of aircraft crew. He has participated in many sorties, including numerous attacks on enemy shipping and throughout has displayed a high standard of navigational ability. In June, 1944, when over a target in Northern
Italy, his aircraft was struck by fragments of shell which started a fire. Flight Sergeant Campbell was wounded but, despite this, he succeeded in extinguishing the outburst. He afterwards navigated the aircraft home in the face of great difficulty. Towards the end of July, 1944, this airman was again a member of a crew detailed for an air operation. During the mission his aircraft was damaged by anti-aircraft fire. A fire started but he extinguished it. Although deprived of the full use of navigational aids he guided his pilot safely home. This airman has displayed a high degree of courage and resolution
.” Stuart was commissioned as a Pilot Officer in August 1944
Born 1922 in Alnwick, Northumberland. Son of David Mackintosh Campbell and May Leask (Harold) Campbell, of Addiscombe, Croydon, Surrey.
Nephew of the Misses Campbell of Abbotsford Grove, Kelso.
Missing in Action on 7 September 1944 and named on the Malta Memorial, Malta.

SGT. AIR GUNNER ROBERT J. CHARTERS.
Robert John Charters – age 23 – Sergeant (1348547) 106 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Bobby's Lancaster bomber had taken off from RAF Metheringham in Lincolnshire for a raid on Berlin but the aircraft crashed in the North Sea off Friesland, Netherlands.

Flora Alice Childs – age 27 – Leading Aircraftwoman (2047042) Women's Auxiliary Air Force
Flora was returning to her base at RAF Happisburgh in Norwich after visiting her mother in law in Hertford Heath when she disappeared on 3 May. She was later found drowned in River Nene in the Isle of Ely, Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire.
Born c.1917 but I cannot trace. Daughter of Andrew Donald and Alice Allan (White) Scott of Kelso. Wife of Edward John Childs, Corporal RAF, who she married in 1944 in Kelso.
Died on Service on 17 May 1945 and buried in Kelso Cemetery
Also named on the Kelso High School memorial.


PTE. ARCHIBALD N. COCKBURN.
Archibald Naismith Cockburn – age 24 – Private (3192440) King's Own Scottish Borderers attached to the 5th Battalion, Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders.
Known locally as Ned, he was a parcels boy with the Scottish Motor Transport Office in Kelso before being employed in the S.M.T. Garage. He enlisted in the KOSB in 1940 and was transferred to the Camerons in North Africa where the 5th Battalion saw action at the Second Battle of El Alamein in October 1942.
Born 1918 in Kelso. Son of James and Mary (Naismith) Cockburn of Orchard Park, Kelso.
Died of Wounds on 18 November 1942 and buried in El Alamein War Cemetery, Egypt.
Also named on the Kelso High School memorial.

CAPTAIN JAMES W. CRAWFORD.
James Wolfenden Crawford, M.B., Ch.B. – age 32 – Captain (128228) Royal Army Medical Corps.
James graduated from Edinburgh University in 1933 and joined the practice of Dr. McCracken in Kelso in 1936. He was commissioned in April 1940.
Born 1910 in Bradford, West Yorkshire. Son of Robert and Edith (Wolfenden) Crawford. Husband of Margaret (Pennington) Crawford of Charlesfield, Kelso and of Edinburgh who he married in 1936 in Middleton St. George, County Durham.
Died on Active Service on 5 May 1942 and buried in Madras War Cemetery, Chennai, India.
Also named on the Kelso High School memorial and on the Edinburgh University Old College memorial.


STOKER THOMAS S. DONALDSON.
Thomas Stewart Donaldson – age 30 – Stoker 1st Class (D/KX 82099) H.M.S. Matabele, Royal Navy.
Thomas had joined the navy in 1932. The destroyer “Matabele” was escorting a convoy to Murmansk in Russia when she was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-454 off the Kola Inlet.
Born 1911 in St. Ninians, Stirling. Son of Peter Clark Donaldson and Margaret Stewart (Armstrong) Donaldson of Ashville, Spylaw Road, Kelso.
Killed in Action/Lost at Sea on 17 January 1942 and named on the Plymouth Naval Memorial, Devon.
Also named on the Kelso High School memorial.


LIEUT. WILLIAM F. DONALDSON.
William Edward Donaldson – age 28 – Second Lieutenant (179607) 44th Royal Tank Regiment, Royal Armoured Corps.
William had been employed in the Bank of Scotland in Kelso before moving to the branch in Forfar. He had joined the Territorial Fife and Forfar Yeomanry and was mobilised in 1939. He was commissioned in the RTR in March 1941.
Born 1913 in Ballina, County Mayo, Ireland. Son of the late William Ferguson Donaldson (died 1938) HM Customs & Excise, and of Miriam Hazel (Howard) Donaldson, formerly of Maxwell Lodge, Abbotsford Grove, Kelso.
Killed in Action on 22 November 1941 and buried in Halfaya Sollum War Cemetery, Egypt.
Also named on the St. Andrews Church Memorial (as Wm Donaldson RTR), on the Kelso High School memorial, on the Forfar Roll of Honour and on the Bank of Scotland memorial in Edinburgh.

L/CORPL. JAMES DOUGLAS.
James Douglas – age 35 – Lance Corporal (3197054) Corps of Military Police.
James had been employed at Messers G. Henderson & Co. Ltd. of Kelso before he joined up. He was killed in a motor cycle accident near Cuckfield in Sussex.
Born 1910 in Kelso. Son of James Brotherston Douglas and of Harriet C. (Duff) Douglas of Horse Market, Kelso. Husband of Margaret Inglis (Ellis) Douglas of Kelso who he married in 1939 in Kelso.
Died on Service on 4 February 1945 and buried in Kelso Cemetery (CWG)
Also named on the Kelso High School memorial.


L/CORPL. ANDREW EASTON.
Andrew Easton – age 24 – Lance Corporal (2696824) 2nd Battalion, Scots Guards.
Born 1919 in Roxburgh. Son of Andrew and Agnes (Young) Easton, of Kelso.
Killed in Action on 12 October 1943 and buried in Dely Ibrahim War Cemetery, Algeria.
Also named on the Kelso High School memorial.


L/CORPL. ALEXANDER GIBB.
Alexander Gibb – age 22 – Lance Corporal (3191685) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Alexander had served his apprenticeship as a painter in Kelso before he enlisted in 1939. He was an active member of the Wheelers Cycling Club along with his friends James Kerr and Robert T. Murray who were killed in the same incident.
In 1939 a building known as Yates Retreat, in the village of Theydon Bois near Epping in Essex, was requisitioned as accommodation for the 6th KOSB who were engaged on security and other duties in the area. In the early hours of 18 November 1940 a German parachute mine dropped by the Luftwaffe struck the Retreat killing thirty men and injuring many others.
Born 1919 in Kelso. Son of Andrew and Jane Gibb of 33 Grovehill, Kelso.
Killed by enemy action on 18 November 1940 and buried in Kelso Cemetery. (CWG)
Also named on the Kelso High School memorial and on a memorial in St. Mary's Church in Theydon Bois.

SGT. CLIFFORD HAWKER.
Clifford George Hawker – age 32 – Sergeant (S/3186022) Royal Army Service Corps.
Clifford and his wife Annie were rayon workers in Jedburgh, Roxburghshire when they married in 1937.
Born 1911 in Cardiff. Son of Arthur and Maud (Wilshire) Hawker. Husband of Annie (Armstrong) Hawker of Kelso who he married in 1937 in Jedburgh.
Died on Service on 11 May 1944 and buried in Calcutta (Bhowanipore) Cemetery, Kolkata, India.
Also named on the Kelso High School memorial.


GUNNER JOHN C. HOGARTH.
John Cairns Hogarth – age 25 – Gunner (1578899) 132 (The Glamorgan Yeomanry) Field Regiment, Royal Artillery.
Born 1917 in Smailholm, Roxburghshire. Son of the late Andrew John Hogarth (died 1917) of Smailholm and of Mary (Fleming) Hogarth, of 2 The Tofts, Kelso.
Missing in Action on 3 December 1942 and named on the Medjez-El-Bab Memorial, Tunisia.
Also named on the Kelso High School memorial.
Andrew John Hogarth, Gunner (209304) 20th Reserve Battery, Royal Field Artillery died in the Brook War Hospital at Woolwich, London on 4 April 1917.


STOKER DOUGLAS IRVINE.
Douglas Irvine – age 22 – Stoker 1st Class (D/KX 89066) H.M. Submarine “Thames”, Royal Navy.
Douglas had been employed as a plumber in Kelso before he joined the navy in 1935. he had transferred to the submarine service just two weeks before he was killed. The “Thames” had sailed from Dundee and was on patrol off Norway when she struck a mine and was lost.
Born 1918 in Kelso. Son of John and Isabella Irvine of 94 Orchard Park, Kelso.
Missing in Action/Lost at sea on 3 August 1940 and named on the Plymouth Naval Memorial, Devon.
Also named on the Kelso High School memorial and on the 9th Submarine Flottila memorial at Victoria Dock in Dundee Harbour.

PTE. GEORGE J. LEITCH.
George James Leitch – age 27 – Private (3185798) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
The 1st KOSB embarked for France in 1939 as part of the 3rd division of the BEF. They crossed the Belgian frontier in May 1940 but like the rest of the force they were ordered to withdraw. Fighting their way to the coast they were evacuated from the beaches of Dunkirk on the night of 31 May.
Born 1912 in Roxburgh. Son of William and Elizabeth (Cleghorn) Leitch of Yetholm, Roxburghshire.
Missing in Action on 31 May 1940 and named on the Dunkirk Memorial, France.
Also named on the Kelso High School memorial
