KELSO TOWN and DISTRICT WW1 WAR MEMORIAL.

Six sons of Andrew and Mary (Frizzel) Robertson of 52 Roxburgh Street, Kelso served during the war of which three were killed.

PTE. ANDREW ROBERTSON.
Andrew Robertson – age 33 – Private (2630) 38th Battalion, Australian Infantry.
Andrew was a stone-mason in Kelso and served in the Territorial 4th King's Own Scottish Borderers for 4 years. He and his wife had emigrated to Australia in 1908. He enlisted in September 1916 and sailed from Sydney in November. He joined his battalion in France in April 1917 but was attached to the 207th and 10th Machine Gun Companies. He rejoined his battalion in August but was killed in the following year. Andrew was buried in Rosenberg Chateau Military Cemetery but was re-interred in 1930.
Born 1884 in Earlston, Berwickshire.
Husband of Helen Kerr (Hendry) Robertson of 13 Hunter Street, Zetland, Sydney, New South Wales who he married in 1906 in Kelso.
Killed in Action on 4 February 1918 and buried in Berks Cemetery Extension, Belgium.


PTE. GEORGE DENHOLM ROBERTSON.
George Denholm Robertson – age 26 – Private (S/4824) 7th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
George landed with his battalion at Boulogne in May 1915 but he was killed four months later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1889 in Kelso.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.


SERGT. WILLIAM ROBERTSON.
William Robertson – age 29 – Sergeant (442765) 54th Battalion (Kootenay), Canadian Infantry.
William was a lineman when he enlisted at Vernon Camp in British Columbia in May 1915. He sailed with his battalion from Halifax, Nova Scotia in November 1915 and was promoted to Sergeant in England in July 1916 before the battalion moved to France in August. William was killed a month later.
Born 1886 in Kelso.
Husband of Violet (Matthew) Robertson of Dennis Street, Cranbrook, British Columbia who he married in 1909 in Cranbrook.
Killed in Action on 8 September 1916 and buried in Reninghelst New Military Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Cranbrook War Memorial.

John Inches Robertson – age 21 – Private (S/13274) 8th/10th Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
John was employed by a builder in Kelso when he enlisted.
Born 1896 in Kelso. Son of Robert and Grace (Inches) Robertson of 25 Sheddon Park Road, Kelso.
Died of Wounds on 5 December 1917 and buried in Duisans British Cemetery, Etrun, France.


PTE. JOHN ROBERTSON (ECKFORD)

Same man?
In 1891 Nicholas was in Oxnam. In 1901 John and his mother Nicholas were living in Morebattle and in 1911 they were in Linton. All these parishes are adjacent to Eckford.

PTE. JOHN ROBERTSON (LINTON)
John Robertson – age 23 – Private (7172) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was a farm servant in Linton, Roxburghshire when he enlisted. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1892 in Linton. Son of Nicholas Robertson.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Linton Parish War Memorial.

PTE. JAMES RODGERS.
James Rodgers – age 20 – Private (766479) 3rd Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
James emigrated to Canada in 1913 to learn fruit farming. He was living at 659 Yonge Street, Toronto, Ontario when he enlisted there in December 1915 and he sailed with the 123rd Battalion (The Royal Grenadiers) from Halifax, Nova Scotia in August 1916 but was posted to the 3rd Battalion in France in October 1916.
Born 1896 in Kelso. Son of John and Mary (Brunton) Rodgers of 13 Union Street, Kelso.
Missing in Action on 3 May 1917 and named on the Vimy Memorial, France.
Also named on the Kelso High School memorial.


2nd LIEUT. EDWARD J. P. ROGER.
Edward James Pringle Roger – age 39 – Second Lieutenant, 49th Divisional Train, Army Service Corps.
Edward and his brother Henry were the joint tenants of Manorhill Farm, Makerstoun, Roxburghshire when they enlisted as Privates (S/9146 and S/9147) in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. They landed at Le Havre with the 14th Battalion in June 1916 and both were commissioned in the ASC in October 1917.
Born 1879 in Old Macher, Aberdeen. Son of the late George Stevenson Roger of Aberdeen (died 1882) and Mary (Walker) Roger of Davidson's Mains, Edinburgh.
Killed in Action on 19 July 1918 and buried in Mendinghem Military Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Makerstoun Parish War Memorial.
Henry or Harry Stevenson Roger was born in 1876 in Aberdeen. After serving with the Argylls he was transferred as Private (224782) to the Labour Corps before gaining his commission. He survived the war and was discharged in February 1919.


L/CORPL. WILLIAM RUDDIMAN.
William Ruddiman – age 25 – Lance Corporal (16593) 7th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was trained as a forester by his father and worked at Scone Palace, Perth and at Bowmont Forest, Floors Castle from where he enlisted in November 1914. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915 but was killed two months later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1890 at Rothes Estate, Leslie Fife. Son of Walter and Jane (Dunn) Ruddiman of Foresters Lodge, Rothes Estate, Leslie, Fife.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Eckford Parish War Memorial, on the Eckford Parish Church memorial now in Eckford Community Hall, on the Leslie Parish War Memorial and on the Scone Parish War Memorial.

PTE. JOHN RUTHERFORD.
John Rutherford – age 37 – Private (20743) 15th Battalion (1st Edinburgh) Royal Scots.
John was a tailor in Kelso when he enlisted in February 1915. He was posted to 2nd Royal Scots in France in June 1915 but was wounded in March 1916 and treated at the 6th British Red Cross Hospital in Etaples before being evacuated to Brook War Hospital in Woolwich, London. After he recovered he was posted to the 15th Royal Scots in November 1916.
Born 1880 in Cockburnspath, Berwickshire. Son of Peter and Isabella (Johnston) Rutherford, of Cockburnspath. Husband of Mary Ellen Royce (Read) Rutherford of 22 The Square, Kelso who he married in 1911 in Kelso.
Killed in Action on 31 May 1917 and buried in Mindel Trench British Cemetery, St. Laurent-Blangy, France.
Also named on the memorial in Kelso North Church and on the Cocksburnpath Parish War Memorial, together with his youngest brother Robert, Private (16669) 13th Royal Scots who died 1 August 1918.


PTE. DAVID SANDERSON.
Thomas David Sanderson – age 19 – Private (17591) 1st Battalion, Scots Guards.
Thomas was educated at Kelso High School. He died in the 49th Casualty Clearing Station at Grevillers.
Born 1899 in Kelso as Thomas David Wood Sanderson. Son of the late Isabella (Wood) Sanderson (died 1911) and of Alexander Sanderson of Coal Market, Kelso.
Died of Wounds on 30 September 1918 and buried in Grevillers British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Kelso High School memorial.

James Sanderson – age 31 – Private (6772) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was educated at Kelso High School and by 1901, aged 18, he was a law clerk in solicitor's office in Kelso. He enlisted at the outbreak of war and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born c.1884 in Galashiels, Selkirkshire. Son of the late Jane Sanderson and of Alexander Sanderson of Coal Market, Kelso. Husband of Margaret (Turnbull) Sanderson of Wood Market, Kelso and of 10B, Scotland Street, Edinburgh who he married in 1910 in Kelso.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Kelso High School memorial.

Not listed by CWGC.
David Reid Scott – age 24 – Private (35799) Royal Scots.
David was a ploughman when he enlisted. He was discharged from the army in September 1916 and died at home of tuberculosis.
Born 1894 in Yetholm, Roxburghshire. Son of the late John Robertson Scott and of Ellen (Leitch) Scott of Greenlees, Linton, Roxburghshire.
Died on 13 November 1918. Burial place not known.
Also named on the Linton Parish War Memorial.


2nd LIEUT. GEORGE SCOTT.
George Trotter Scott – age 23 – Second Lieutenant, 2nd Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own)
In 1901 George, age 7, was living with relatives Robert and Elizabeth Hall at Berrymoss Cottage, Kelso. He enlisted in October 1914 and as Corporal (R6024) he landed at Boulogne with the 8th Battalion of the King's Royal Rifle Corps in May 1915. He was commissioned in November 1915.
Born 1894 in Sprouston, Roxburghshire. Son of Wilhelmina McLachlan Scott.
Died of Wounds on 6 May 1917 and buried in La Chapelette British And Indian Cemetery, Peronne, Somme, France.


PTE. JAMES F. SCOTT.
James Farrow Scott – age 20 – Private (45642) 4th (Reserve) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was a farm servant when he enlisted but he contracted meningitis and died in the West of Fife Infectious Diseases Hospital in Dunfermline.
Born 1898 in Kelso. Son of James and Margaret Arres (Farrow) Scott of Hill Head Farm, Kelso.
Died on Service on 10 July 1918 and buried in Kelso Cemetery. (CWG)

James William Service – age 21 – Private (533) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was employed as a fishing hook dresser in Kelso and as a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB he was mobilised in August 1914 but he contracted pneumonia and died in the Red Cross Hospital in Galashiels.
Born 1893 in Kelso. Son of Thomas and Alice Margaret (Dods) Service of 153 Roxburgh Street, Kelso.
Died on Service on 10 March 1915 and buried in Kelso Cemetery. (CWG)


L/CORPL. JOHN SHARPE.
John Sharpe – age 24 – Lance Corporal (4175) 9th Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
John was employed as a grocer with Messrs D&J McEwen in Aberfoyle, Perthshire when he enlisted in 1914. He was a well known local runner and competed with success in the Gartmore Games, winning the Glasgow Cup several times. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915 but was fatally wounded two months later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1891 in Yetholm, Roxburghshire. Son of Robert and Margaret (Smart) Sharpe of Bowmont Cottage, Yetholm.
Died of Wounds on 28 September 1915 and buried in Noeux-Les-Mines Communal Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Yetholm Parish War Memorial and on the Aberfoyle War Memorial.


LIEUT. ROBERT SINCLAIR.
Robert Sinclair – age 33 – Lieutenant, 2nd Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
Robert had been with the Black Watch in India for 15 years and in August 1914 he was Sergeant (7234) with the 2nd Battalion in Bareilly. They moved to France, landing at Marseilles in October 1914. Robert was commissioned in April 1915 but was killed at Neuve Chapelle a month later. He was buried in Vieille Chapelle Old Military Cemetery but was re-interred at Souchez after the war.
Born 1882 in Edinburgh. Son of the late Ann (Young) Sinclair (died 1890) and of William Sinclair, ex-Sergeant of Edinburgh City Police, of Manse Lodge, Linton, Roxburghshire.
Killed in Action on 9 May 1915 and buried in Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery, Souchez, France.
Also named on the Linton Parish War Memorial.

LIEUT. FRANK W. SMAIL.
Frank Weddell Smail – age 23 – Lieutenant, 1/7th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers.
Frank was educated at Berwick Grammar School and at Loretto School in Musselburgh until 1909. He studied farming near Duns in Berwickshire and by 1911 he was tenant of the farm at Linton Burnfoot, Roxburghshire. He had enlisted as a Private in the Lothians and Border Horse Yeomanry and was commissioned in the Territorial 7th Northumberland Fusiliers in May 1914. He landed with the battalion in France in April 1915 but was wounded in head by a sniper in June. He was evacuated to the Hospital for Officers at 24 Park Street in Mayfair, London but died there in December 1915.
Born 1892 in Berwick-on-Tweed, Northumberland. Son of the late Fanny Maria (Weddell) Smail (died 1900) and of Henry Richardson Smail, proprietor of the Berwick Advertiser, of Berwick-on-Tweed.
Died of Wounds on 1 December 1915 and buried in Berwick-Upon-Tweed Cemetery, Northumberland. (CWG)

GUNNER IAN S. SMITH.
Ian Stuart Smith – age 23 – Gunner (158994) 38th Heavy Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery.
Ian was educated at Kelso High School and was employed in the Estate Duty Office in Edinburgh when he enlisted.
Born 1895 in Alnwick, Northumberland. Son of William and Jessie Smith of 11 Wood Market, Kelso.
Died of Wounds on 1 July 1918 and buried in Terlincthun British Cemetery, Wimille, France.
Also named on the Kelso High School memorial.


BRIG. MAJ. WILLIAM F. SOMERVAIL. D.S.O. M.C.
William Fulton Somervail, Distinguished Service Order, Military Cross – age 26 – Captain, 2nd Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) and Brigade Major 3rd Infantry Brigade.
William was educated at Loretto School in Musselburgh until 1911. He obtained a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the Cameronians in August 1914 and joined the 1st battalion in France in January 1915. He was awarded a M.C. “For conspicuous gallantry, marked ability and presence of mind at Neuve Chapelle from 10th to 14th March, 1915, when he ably seconded his Commanding Officer and performed excellent work on his own initiative. On the evening of the 12th March he collected the men of his battalion and conducted them over unknown ground to a position for attack with very good judgment. He brought his Battalion out of action after the engagement on 14th March.” He was promoted to Lieutenant in the 2nd Battalion in April 1915, to Captain in June and fought at Loos and on the Somme. In July 1917 he took command of his Battalion again, was made Temporary Lieutenant-Colonel and awarded the D.S.O. In January 1918 he became Brigade Major, 3rd Infantry Brigade. William and his Brigadier, Sir William Algernon Ireland Kay, went out alone to reconnoitre the position at Joncourt near St. Quentin, and were found later lying dead, killed by the same shell.
Born 1892 in Edrom, Berwickshire. Son of James Alexander Somervail and of Isabella (Fulton) of Hoselaw, Linton, Roxburghshire. Husband of Joyce Isabel (Munro) Somervail of Auchindoune, Cawdor, Nairn who he married in August 1918 in Inverness.
Killed in Action on 4 October 1918 and buried in Vadencourt British Cemetery, Maissemy, Aisne, France.
Also named on an individual plaque in Hoselaw Chapel, on the Linton Parish War Memorial, on the Edrom Parish War Memorial and on the Loretto School memorial.

PTE. ROBERT STAVERT.
Robert Stavert – age 19 – Private (540) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert was employed with Hogarth & Sons, painters in Kelso and as a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB he was mobilised in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
In 1901 Robert Bryce and Robert Beattie, both born in Duns, Berwickshire in 1895, were “boarders” with Agnes Stavert and her family at 22 Wood Market, Kelso. Beattie was still there in 1911 but I cannot trace Bryce.
Born 1895 in Duns, Berwickshire. Son of ????
Foster son of Agnes (Tolmie) Stavert of 20 Wood Market, Kelso.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.

Walter Stavert – age 30 – Private (24018) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
Walter 29 was a labourer when he enlisted in November 1915. He was mobilised as Private (22957) in the King's Own Scottish Borderers in February 1916 but was posted to the 2nd RSF in France in June 1916. Walter was killed on the Somme six weeks later.
Born 1886 in Kelso. Son of the late Thomas Stavert (died 1889) and Agnes (Tolmie) Stavert of 20 Wood Market, Kelso.
Missing in Action on 30 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.


PTE. ARCHIBALD G. STEEL.
Archibald George Steel – age 19 – Private (16091) 2nd Battalion, Scots Guards.
Archie was educated at Kelso High School and enlisted as soon as his age allowed. His father James was already on service with a Canadian Regiment.
Born 1898 in Kelso. Son of James Steel and of Agnes Beattie (Watson) Steel of 47 Roxburgh Street, Kelso. Grandson of the late Archibald Steel of The Weigh House Hotel, Kelso.
Missing in Action on 25 November 1917 and named on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval, France.
Also named on the Kelso High School memorial.


SAPPER THOMAS STEEL.
Thomas James Steel – age 30 – Sapper (134442) 79th Field Company, Royal Engineers.
Thomas enlisted in Walsall, Staffordshire in 1915 and had been at the front since June 1916.
Born 1887 at Kirknewton, Glendale, Northumberland. Son of the late Thomas Steel (died 1898) and of Margaret (Chirnside) Steel of East Bowmont Street, Kelso and formerly of Wooler, Northumberland.
Missing in Action on 31 July 1917 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the memorial in Kelso North Church.

PTE. WILLIAM M. STEEL.
William Milne Steel – age 24 – Private (29689) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William, aged 17, was a joiner in Kelso when he enlisted as Private (409) in the Territorial 4th KOSB in February 1910. He was a player with both the Kelso Rugby Club and the Kelso Football Club. He was mobilised in August 1914 and transferred to the 12th Scottish Provisional Battalion as a Lance Corporal in May 1915. He was discharged from the army as his term of service had expired in February 1916 but he re-enlisted and joined the 6th KOSB in France.
Born 1893 in Melrose, Roxburghshire. Son of the late James Steel and of Sarah White (Hendry) Steel of 25 Horse Market, Kelso.
Killed in Action on 9 April 1917 and buried in Tilloy British Cemetery, Tilloy-Les-Mofflaines, France.


LT. COL. JOHN C. STORMONTH-DARLING. D.S.O.
John Collier Stormonth-Darling, Distinguished Service Order – age 38 – Lieutenant Colonel, 1st Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) attached to the 1/9th (Glasgow Highland) Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
John was educated at Cordwalles School in Maidenhead and at Loretto School in Musselburgh until 1897. He gained a commission in the King's Own Scottish Borderers in February 1900 but transferred to the Cameronians that year and served in the South African War. He landed with the 1st Cameronians at Le Havre in August 1914 and was later promoted to Major. He had been awarded a DSO in February 1915 while a Captain. John was posted to command the 1/9th HLI in November 1915 and was killed leading his battalion at Le Transloy on the Somme a year later.
Born 1878 in Kelso. Son of the late Patrick Stormonth-Darling (died August 1916) and of Katherine Scott (Collier) Stormonth-Darling of Edenbank, Kelso.
Killed in Action on 1 November 1916 and buried in Guillemont Road Cemetery, Guillemont, Somme, France.
Also named on the Loretto School memorial and on a Cameronians memorial plaque in Dunkeld Cathedral.


PTE. CHARLES STREET.
Charles Street – age 23 – Private (306) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Charles was a noted rugby forward and as a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB he was mobilised in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1893 in Kelso. Son of Charles Street, Head Gardener at Floors Castle Gardens, Kelso, and of Maria McKenzie (Blair) Street.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Kelso High School memorial and on the St. Andrews Church memorial.

PTE. JAMES SWANSTON.
James Swanston – age 30 – Private (24017) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
James was a forester in Stichill, Roxburghshire when he enlisted in December 1915. He was mobilised as Private (22953) in the KOSB in March 1916 and was posted to the 2nd RSF in France in June 1916 but he was killed six weeks later.
Born 1886 in Stichill as James Cockburn Swanston. Son of George and Elspeth (Cockburn) Swanston of East Lodge, Stichill.
Missing in Action on 30 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.

BOMB. MARK TAIT.
Mark Tait, Military Medal and Bar – age 25 – Corporal (7482) “Y” 18th Trench Mortar Battery, Royal Field Artillery.
Mark was employed by a fruiterer in Kelso when he enlisted in 1914. He was a Driver when he landed in France in July 1915. He was a Bombardier when he was awarded a M.M. for bravery in September 1917 and he was awarded a second medal in November 1917.
Born 1893 in Jedburgh, Roxburghshire. Son of James and Annie (McKay) Tait of 5 Lillie's Place, Kelso. Husband of Mary Ann (Brannan or Mustard) Tait who he married in January 1918 in Kelso.
Missing in Action on 21 March 1918 and named on the Pozieres Memorial, Somme, France.
Also named on the Church of the Immaculate Conception (St Mary's) memorial in Kelso.


PTE. CHARLES THOMSON.
Charles Thomson – age 22 – Private (43121) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Charles enlisted as Private (7180) in the Durham Light Infantry and was posted as Private (40722) to the DLI's Labour Company in France. He was transferred as Private (64219) to the Labour Corps before being transferred again to the KOSB.
Born 1895 in Eccles, Berwickshire. Son of Hugh Graham Thomson and of Margaret (Reilly ) Thomson of Cessford, Eckford, Roxburghshire.
Died of Wounds on 30 November 1917 and buried in Fins New British Cemetery, Sorel-Le-Grand, Somme, France.
Also named on the Eckford Parish War Memorial and on the Eckford Parish Church memorial now in Eckford Community Hall.

PTE. JAMES T. THOMSON.
James Thomas Thomson – age 23 – Private (8411) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James joined his battalion in Egypt in 1916 but became ill and died in hospital in Kantara.
Born 1893 in Kelso. Son of James and Margaret Thomson of 16 Albert Place, Kelso.
Died on Active Service on 31 January 1917 and buried in Kantara War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.


PTE. JOHN THOMSON.
Note: The spelling of the family name (Thompson/Thomson) varies from record to record.
John Thompson – age 28 – Private (200831) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
As Private (7431) John landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915. He then served in Egypt and Palestine where he was captured and made a prisoner of war.
Born 1889 in Kelso as Thomson. Son of the late Thomas Thomson (died 1909) and of Christina (Holmes) Thomson of Spylaw Farm, Kelso.
Died on Service between 8 & 11 January 1917 and buried in Baghdad (North Gate) War Cemetery, Iraq.


PTE. GEORGE TICE.
George Tice – age 29 – Private (38777) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots.
George was a battalion signaller when he was killed by a shell during a counter-attack.
Born 1888 in Yetholm, Roxburghshire. Son of George and Sarah Elizabeth (Stenhouse) Tice of Yetholm.
Killed in Action on 26 September 1917 and buried in Tyne Cot Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Yetholm Parish War Memorial.

PTE. JOHN TICE.
John's name was added to the CWGC's Debt of Honour Register on 4 August 2014.
John Tice – age 32 – Private (38961) 1st Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps.
John joined his unit in France in July 1915 and served throughout the war. He died of cancer in Bangour Military Hospital, West Lothian.
Born 1886 in Kelso. Son of William and Isabella (Nisbet) Tice of 24 Horse Market, Kelso.
Died on 24 August 1919 and buried in Kelso Cemetery. (CWG)

As Private (7727)William joined his battalion in Egypt in 1916 and served there and in Palestine before they moved to France in April 1918.
Born 1888 in Kelso. Son of William and Isabella (Nisbet) Tice of 24 Horse Market, Kelso. Husband of Margaret (Green) Tice of 2A, Greenside Place, Edinburgh who he married in 1910 in Kelso.
Died of Wounds on 20 September 1918 and buried in Sunken Road Cemetery, Boisleux-St. Marc, France.


PTE. ANDREW TINLIN.
Andrew Elliot Tinlin – age 21 – Private (11808) 7th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Andrew enlisted at the outbreak of war and joined the 2nd KOSB in France in September 1914 during the retreat from Mons. He was wounded at the Aisne and then joined the 7th KOSB who had arrived at Boulogne in July 1915.
Born 1895 in Sprouston, Roxburghshire. Son of Robert and Elizabeth Jane (Alcorn) Tinlin of Toll House, Sprouston.
Missing in Action on 24 February 1916 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Sprouston Parish War Memorial.

PTE. JAMES TITILAH.
James Titilah – age 25 – Private (34253) Royal Army Medical Corps attached to the 9th Field Company, Royal Engineers.
James landed in France in November 1914.
Born 1892 in Kelso. Son of the late Abraham Titilah (died 1895) and Jane (Taylor) Titilah (died 1902) formerly of 11 Horse Market, Kelso.
He named his brother Abraham of Meadow View, Kelso and his sisters Jane, Phyllis and Mabel as his legatees.
Killed in Action on 23 December 1917 and buried in Monchy British Cemetery, Monchy-Le-Preux, France.


PTE. GEORGE W. TURNBULL.
George William Turnbull – age 19 – Private (58961) 1/9th (Highlanders) Battalion, Royal Scots.
George was a postman when he enlisted as Private (2/13714) in a Training Reserve Battalion in June 1917. He was posted as Private (51477) to the 2nd Highland Light Infantry in France in March 1918 but was transferred to the Royal Scots. George was killed nine days later. He was re-interred in Merville in September 1922.
Born 1899 in Kelso. Son of Thomas and Jessie (Turnbull) Turnbull of 121 Roxburgh Street, Kelso.
Killed in Action on 12 April 1918 and buried in Merville Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
Also named on the St. Andrews Church memorial.


PTE. JAMES TURNBULL.
James Turnbull – age 20 – Private (201223) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers
James was employed at Monthooly Farm, Crailing, Roxburghshire when he enlisted. He joined his battalion in Egypt as Private (8216) and served in Palestine where he was killed near Gaza.
Born 1896 in Greenlaw, Berwickshire. Son of James and Elizabeth (Leslie) Turnbull of Upper Nisbet Farm, Crailing, of Newton, Jedburgh, Roxburghshire and of Kerchesters, Kelso.
Killed in Action on 6 April 1917 and buried in Deir El Belah War Cemetery, Palestine.
Also named on the Crailing Parish War Memorial.

PTE. WILLIAM TURNBULL.
William Robert Turnbull – age 33 – Private (8528) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was a baker when he enlisted as Private (1551) in the Gordon Highlanders in August 1914 however he was considered unlikely to be become an effective soldier and discharged a month later.
He obviously re-enlisted and he joined the 1st KOSB at Gallipoli in May 1915 but was killed a month later.
Born 1882 in Kelso. Son of the late John Wright Turnbull of Roxburgh Street, Kelso (died 1915) and of the late Isabella (Morrison) Turnbull (died 1902)
He named his brothers Robert and John, and his sisters Isabella, Margaret, Jessie and Lizzie as his legatees.
Missing in Action on 4 June 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the St. Andrews Church memorial.


CORPL. ANDREW TURNER.
Andrew Turner – age 24 – Corporal (S/7383) 2nd Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
Andrew had been a farm servant at Blakelaw Farm, Linton, Roxburghshire. He enlisted in November 1914 and joined his battalion in France in February 1915. He served at Neuve Chapelle and at Loos but was severely wounded at the Somme and died in a Casualty Clearing Station at Corbie.
Born 1891 in Kelso. Son of the late Mary Hogg (Archibald) Turner (died 1893) and of Andrew Turner, and step-son of Helen (Quarry) Turner of Hardie's Mill, Gordon, Berwickshire. Andrew and Helen married in 1895 in Kelso. Husband of Jane (Armstrong or Moffat) Turner of Middle Softlaw, Kelso who he married while on leave on 30 December 1915 in Kelso. Jane married William John Robertson in 1919 in Kelso.
Died of Wounds on 19 March 1916 and buried in Corbie Communal Cemetery, Somme, France.
Also named on the Linton Parish War Memorial.

Born 1882 in Eckford, Roxburghshire. Son of the late Mary Hogg (Archibald) Turner (died 1893) and of Andrew Turner, and step-son of Helen (Quarry) Turner of Hardie's Mill, Gordon, Berwickshire and of Sucklawridge, Kelso.
Missing in Action on 30 November 1917 and named on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval, France.

Thought to be:
Thomas Waddell – age 24 – Private (S/17114) 6th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Thomas was a clerk at Middlethird, Gordon, Berwickshire when he enlisted in January 1915. He joined his battalion in France in August 1915 but he was killed less than two months later during the battle at Loos.
Born 1891 in Chirnside, Berwickshire. Son of William and Jane (Scott) Waddell of Waulkmill, Duns and of Penmanshiel, Grantshouse. Berwickshire.
Missing in Action on 26 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.


PTE. BADDON T. WALLACE.
Baddon Turnbull Wallace – age 22 – Private (546) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Baddon was a pre-war member of the Territorial 4th KOSB and was mobilised in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1893 in Kelso. Son of David Mitchell Wallace and Mary (Turnbull) Wallace of 147 Roxburgh Street, Kelso.
Killed in Action on 12 July 1915 and buried in Lancashire Landing Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey.
