The Scotsman, 15th July 1921

LAUDER - The Parish Church of Lauder was filled with a crowded congregation from all parts of the Dale on the occasion of a service in memory of its soldiers who fell in the war. Both the local ministers took part, Dr McConachie and the Rev John Robertson MA, UF Church. Another short service took place at the memorial - in the form of an old Mercat Cross - which has been set up in a green plot at the west end of Lauder. It was unveiled by Colonel Hope of Cowdenknowes. Dr McConachie read the names of the fallen soldiers and offerred the dedicatory prayer. A larger number of wreaths were laid on the memorial before the close of the service, from the Earl and Countess of Lauderdale, Colonel and Mrs Hope, ex-service men, public bodies, and many friends.

The Buildings of Scotland - Borders, p485

War Memorial, Edinburgh Road, 1923 [presumably a mistake]. An octagonal granite shaft on a stepped base surmounted by a lion rampant holding a shield, with cross and dates 1914-18.

Thomas, killed in the Battle for Hong Kong in late 1941, is the only Redpath in the Royal Scots in CWGC. His brother George actually died in the autumn of 1938 in the Mandate of Palestine. So, unusually, a pre-WWII death noted.

That is interesting about an inter-war death being recorded. As far as I remember the only other one on a civic war memorial in Scotland is on the memorial at Tomatin for a North-West Frontier death.

Thanks
