Pettinain is another small village which you would only visit if you were specifically going there.

The memorial I think may have originally been in the village square, such as it was, but it appears to have been moved into the churchyard.

Carluke and Lanark Gazette 6/7/1918 p.2

LANARK AIR OFFICER DROWNED Information reached Lanark on Thursday that Second Lieutenant William Alexander Hlunter, of the Royal Air force, had been drowned at sea on the previous day. Lieutenant Hunter, who was the eldest son of Mrs Hunter, St. Ronan's, Bonnington Avenue, Lanark, joined the Air Forces about a year ago, and would have obtained Pilot's Certificate in the course of a few days. The deceased officer was 21 years age, and a native of Lanark. Previous to the outbreak of war he was employed as an electrical engineer in the firm of Messrs Hunter & lack, Glasgow, which firm his father was a partner. From the information to hand, it appears that Lieut. Hunter had been out on a flight, when, something going wrong with his aeroplane, he fell into the sea. The body was recovered, and the funeral, which will be a military one, will take place from Westraw farm to Pettinain Churchyard to-day (Saturday).

His death was registered at Direlton, East Lothian.

Carluke & Lanark Gazette 26/10/1918 p.2

LANARK AIRMAN KILLED. Information has reached Lanark that Second-Lieutenant Andrew Jack Prentice the Royal Air Force, son of Mr and Mrs Charles Prentice, Westraw Mains, had been killed as the result of aeroplane accident on 16th October. Lieut. Prentice had been on a flight, and his aeroplane commenced to descend rapidly,. In his downward course it came upon the top of another aeroplane and both descended to the earth together. It was discovered that Lieut. Prentice had received fatal injuries. The remains of the deceased officer were interred with military honours m Pettlnain Churchyard on Tuesday. Prior to enlisting he was in the Lanark Branch of the Royal Bank.

Liverpool Daily Post 19/10/1918 p.5

COLLISION IN MID-AIR. A verdict of accidental death was returned at an inquest on Sec.-Lieut. Andrew Jack Prentice, R.A.F. The evidence showed that Mr. Prentice was flying single-seater a height of about 5.000 feet. Coming down out of a cloud his machine collided with two-seater flying about 1.OOO feet lower. One of the wings of his machine was smashed, but the two aeroplanes were locked together. With great skill the pilot of the second machine brought both to earth. It was then found that Mr. Prentice's head had been jammed between the two machines, fracturing his skull.

His death was registered at Brentford, Middlesex.
