When I Heard The Bell by John Macleod (Birlinn Books) covers the loss of HMY Iolaire - in good bookshops this month - book launch early March.
c284 pages.
There is another book on the Iolaire being written by Donald J.MacLeod at present - title and publishing date not yet decided but will cover the Iolaire men and their families.
I'm pleased to have helped/ currently helping both gentlemen with their projects.

Excellent imagery, ADP. It is worth pointing out that it is not easy to make out the monument from the ferry, but the spike on top of the Beasts of Holm reef is a good pointer. |

The first and third were at my telephoto lens's maximum focal length of 300mm (relative to natural focal legth of 50mm), so the monument is greatly zoomed in upon. The second photo was taken with focal length of 81mm, so is not zoomed in by far.
The third photo also shows the access footpath that you described in an earlier post.

Thanks Malcolm for the info on the newly published book on the Iolaire . I found it on W H Smith's website and you can either order it by delivery to a W H Smiths shop near you or by First Class post delivery to your door . Got the book yesterday and it looks well researched with interesting factual info and excellent info on the crew and passengers who were casualties or survivors .

A new Memorial to the disaster is being constructed in Carn Gardens, beside Stornoway Town Hall. It is a cairn constructed of stones from the home village of each man lost- 20 of whom were from outside the Isles, including Hartlepool. London and the Isle of Wight.
It will be unveiled at 11am on 23rd March 2018
Full details are on WMR report 75762 & the Hebrides News of 11th March. |

|
|
For the centenary of the Iolaire tragedy, a new access path has been constructed. It is paved with tarmac, and wheelchair accessible.
A wall has been built just west of the memorial itself, which incorporates a special plaque. In front of it sits a bronze depiction of a coiled rope, the centenary memorial for the Iolaire. The names of all those lost have been cast into bronze strips, which are laid out in front of the wall and rope depiction.
HRH Prince Charles, Lord of the Isles and Duke of Rothesay, unveiled this new memorial on 1st January 2019.
A book has been published, which is held to be the definitive account of the tragedy. It is called "The Darkest Dawn", by Malcolm Macdonald and Donald John Macleod, ISBN 9781789070248. DJ sadly passed away before the book was published in November 1918.
I shall add further photos after my next visit to the memorial |
