Hello
I am wondering why these two lads were left off the memorial in the wellmedow, J Murry and Alex Smith. Also would there be a copy of the book mentioned above in the Blair library.

Thanks
Smid

Hello Smiddy,

I think it has been mentioned on the forum previously that there are a variety of reasons why some casualties appear on particular memorials whilst others do not.
It depended on whose name was put forward for which memorial. Some are on those where they were born, others where they grew up, were schooled, worked, family choice etc. I can't give a definitive answer to your question in this case either I'm afraid.

There is a copy of Blairgowrie & Rattray War Memorial Behind the Names' in Blair & Alyth Libraries.

rgds.,
Mark

Hi
Many thanks for your reply, I can understand why the family would want the names put on a memorial in a particular church or school but I think it so sad that they are not recorded along with there comrades on the community memorial.

Thanks Again
Smid

Absolutely, and I will quote one example, again relating to Blairgowrie - and no doubt replicated throughout the country.

Name: FICHLIE, WILLIAM
Initials: W
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Highland Light Infantry
Unit Text: 17th Bn.
Age: 20
Date of Death: 18/11/1916
Service No: 43263
Additional information: Son of Patrick Fichlie, of 26, George St., Blairgowrie, Perthshire, and the late Elizabeth Smith Fichlie.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Pier and Face 15 C.
Memorial: THIEPVAL MEMORIAL

The Fichlies were well-known in the town for years. Willie's younger brother, Martin, was a good friend of my grandfather, Martin Duffy. My great uncle, John Duffy, is on the memorial but Willie Fichlie is not and I thought that would have been a stick on. Willie Fichlie does appear in the Dundee RoH as he had been working as a butcher in Lochee prior to the outbreak of war.
