MEMORIALS IN DUNKELD CATHEDRAL
BLACK WATCH OLD COLOURS
A private memorial to several officers of the Cameronians who have fallen in the war has been placed by their friends in Dunkeld Cathedral, in the vicinity of which the regiment fought and won its first battle against the Jacobite troops, on 21st August, 1869 after the Jacobite victory at Killiecrankie. This interesting historical fact is recorded on a tablet erected in the Cathedral by the regiment, to the memory of Lieut.-Col. Wm. Cleland, the commanding officer, who was killed during the action at Dunkeld. The Cathedral is also the repository of the old colours of the Black Watch, the county Territorial Regiment, which were presented to the church by the late Dowager Duchess of Atholl. In the vestibule there is a finely sculpted memorial erected in 1872 by the officers of the corps "In memory of the officers, N.C.O.'s, and private soldiers of the 42d Highlanders, who fell in war from the creation of the regiment at Aberfeldy in 1739 to the close of the Indian Mutiny, 1859". In view of the historical connection of both distinguished regiments with the ancient edifice, it is not improbable that the Cathedral will be officially associated with the records of the Cameronians and the Black Watch in the European War.
