Southern Reporter (13/6/1940): Captain Alastair McLeman MA, minister of Craigside Church and Chaplain to the Forces, has died of wounds. Captain McLeman was a son of the late Rev GL McLeman, formerly of Polmadie Church, Glasgow, and Mrs McLeman, Glasgow. Innerleithen Church was his first charge. He came in 1937. He was married last year on 31st July to Miss Margaret B Mackie, MA, Broomieknowe, and on the outbreak of war went to France with the BEF. He was expected home some time this month on leave. The remains arrived by train on Saturday and were taken to Craigside Church. "

At 08.35 hours on 24 Feb 1942 the unescorted White Crest (Master Gordon Joures), a straggler from convoy ONS-67 due to a heavy gale on 19 February, was hit by two torpedoes from U-162 and sank capsizing after eight minutes southeast of St. John’s. The ship had been spotted at 02.30 hours and missed with two torpedoes at 04.45 hours. The master, 40 crew members and six gunners were lost. (Source: UBoat.net)
