Southern Reporter 8/11/1945: Notification has been received of the posthumous award of the Military Medal to CSM J S Lees, Royal Marines, son of Mrs George Lees, Tweedholm Avenue, Walkerburn. CSM Lees was a Regular, and had been on active service in various theatres. He was twice wounded. He died from injuries in an accident in North West Europe on June 4 last. No details of the citation have yet been notified, but a letter has been received which says that, "by his courageous actions and leadership he has added lustre to the corps, and we, his comrades, would like to say how proud we are of his achievement".

Southern Reporter 1/11/1945: The death has taken place at Edenhall Cemetery, Musselburgh, of Private T H Lees, 8th Royal Scots, who was severely wounded in July 1944 in the fighting near Caen. Private Lees is the second son of Mrs George Lees, Tweedholm Avenue, Walkerburn, to die as a result of war wounds. His two surviving brothers have also been wounded, one seriously. Private Lees leaves a wife and baby girl.

Both are also named on Peebles War Memorial.

Named on the Caddonfoot Parish War Memorial in Selkirkshire as:

LIEUT. OSCAR F. MORITZ.
Oscar Frank Moritz – age 32 – Second Lieutenant, 99th Company, Machine Gun Corps.
Oscar was educated at Sherborne School in Dorset and was called to the Bar (Middle Temple) in 1909. He was the tenant at Elibank Farm, Caddonfoot when he enlisted in the Royal Army Medical Corps in September 1914 and, after becoming a Staff Sergeant, he was commissioned in the Border Regiment in April 1915 He transferred to the MGC in January 1916 and went to France in April. Oscar was killed three months later during the battle at Delville Wood.
Born 1885 in Edmonton, London. Son of the late Herman Rudolph Moritz of the London Stock Exchange (died 1906) and his wife, Elisa Mathilda (Kronheim) Moritz who married in 1869 in Tottenham, London.
Herman was a merchant in Glasgow when he married in 1869 and Oscar's older sibling were born in or near the city. Herman had been born in Prussia and obtained naturalisation papers in 1873.

Oscar's sister Hilda Moritz (born 1882 in Lenzie, Dunbartonshire) was named as an executor of his will. She had married John King Ballantyne (a woollen mill owner) in 1906 in Highgate London and lived at Tweedvale, Walkerburn, Peeblesshire.(very near to Elibank, Caddonfoot)

Missing in Action on 27 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.

Named on the Galashiels War Memorial in Selkirkshire as:

SGT. DAVID STEVENSON. Royal Scots
Note: All Red Cross PoW records refer to him as Sergeant.
David Stevenson – age 24 – Corporal (13317) 11th Battalion, Royal Scots.
David was a mill worker in Walkerburn, Innerleithen, Peebleshire when he enlisted and he landed in France with his battalion in May 1915. He was wounded and captured during the battle at Loos in September and remained a prisoner of war until he was repatriated, arriving at Hull on the SS “Porto” on 11 November 1918. David died of pneumonia in the Glencorse Military Hospital near Edinburgh.
Born 1895 in Galashiels. Son of Robert Graham Stevenson and of Janet Richardson (McNairn) Stevenson of Tweedside Cottages, Walkerburn.
Died on Service on 20 February 1919 and buried in Innerleithen Cemetery, Peeblesshire. (CWG)
