Wigtownshire Free Press (27/12/1917): Second-Lieutenant John Forrest McCredie, Machine Gun Corps, elder son of Mrs McCredie, 18 Academy Street, Stranraer, is reported missing from November 30. He received his training in the Inns of Court Officers' Training Corps, and was gazetted in October of last year. He is 21 years of age, and was a medical student at Edinburgh University. |

Wigtownshire Free Press (11/4/1918): Captain Charles Inglis Clark (died of wounds) was the only son of Dr and Mrs Inglis Clark, of 29 Lauder Road, Edinburgh, and Oakwood, Rosslyn Castle, and was educated at George Watson's College, and later at the University of Edinburgh, where he took the degree of Bachelor of Science in Natural Science, with honours in Physiology. Subsequently he was involved in scientific work with the firm of Duncan, Flockhart @ Co., Edinburgh, until the outbreak of war. He applied for a commission in the first week of August 1914 and was gazetted Lieutenant in the Army Service Corps a month later. He was wounded at Givenchy in November 1914 and soon obtained a Captaincy. The deceased, who was a son-in-law of Mrs Matthews Frederick of Gass, was 29 years of age, and leaves a widow and son. |

John Maxwell Edgar was born in Middlesbrough in April 1887, the son of John Edgar (an Inland Revenue Supervisor) and his wife Margaret. He lived variously in Middlesbrough (1891), Stirling (1901) and Bridgwater (1911). The 1893-5 Vauluation Rolls show the family living in Wigtown.
Wigtownshire Free Press (18/4/1918): Captain John Maxwell Edgar, only surviving son of Mr John Edgar, retired collector of Customs and Excise, 18 Whirlowdale Rd, Millhouses, Sheffield, formerly of Wigtown, was killed in action on 22 March. Captain Edgar, who was 30 years of age, was in the South Staffordshire Regiment, and, before enterring the Army was master at Dr Morgan's Endowed School, Bridgwater, Somerset. He was in France when war broke out , at Caen University.
Sheffield Telegraph (April 4 1918): Captain John Maxwell Edgar, only surviving son of Mr John Edgar, retired collector of customs, of 48 Whirlowdale Road, Millhouses, Sheffield, was killed in action on the 22nd March. Captain Edgar, who was 30 years of age, was in the South Staffordshire Regiment and, before going into the Army, was master at Dr Morgan's Endowed School, Bridgwater, Somerset. He was in France when war broke out at Caen University. The governors were not able to release him until the end of 1914 when he came home and joined the Sheffield University OTC. He gained a commission early in 1915. He was badly gassed at Loos in September of the same year, made a good recovery, and rejoined his regiment at the front line at the start of October last year. He was in the front line in the recent big German attack. He had been at home on leave at the beginning of last month. Captain Edgar had a fine scholastic record. Educated first at Stirling High School, where he was captain of his school, he went on to Edinburgh University. There he graduated MA with honours in classics and gained a number of scholarships and distinctions. He obtained his blue for football and played cricket for Stirling County, and later he played rugby for Somerset County. |
