OS Map Ref NX 45822 83163
This is a memorial to a USAF F111 jet which crashed in a remote location in the Galloway hills on 19th Dec 1979. The location is near the top of Craignaw and is very remote. If you intend to visit this memorial, please make sure you have suitable clothing and equipment for a trip to the hills and know how to use a map and compass.
The memorial is a mortared cairn of local stone with a plaque with the following inscription:
In Loving Memory of
Capt R A Hetzner 28 USAF
Capt R C Spaulding 30 USAF
F1-11E crew
Crashed Dec 19th 79
AKHWC
A few remaining pieces of aircraft wreckage have been placed nearby.
