I cannot read the names on the memorial photographs and if this soldier has not been left out then there is a difference in the regiment printed in the Selkirk Roll of Honour. It reads Royal Scots - should be Royal Scots Fusiliers. He was transferred to the R.S.F. September, 1916.

The Glasgow Herald, Saturday, 24th March, 1917.
"Deaths on Service.
HAMILTON.- At a British Red Cross Hospital on the 22nd inst., William Gillespie, aged 17 years, youngest son of James Hamilton, Philiphaugh, Selkirk."

Ran across this story yesterday - four brothers and a brother-in-law!

Southern Reporter 24/10/1918
Sergt. James Douglas. Seaforth Highlanders. died on Thursday at the house of his father, Mr James Douglas, Green Terrace, Selkirk. He enlisted in August, 1914. and went through much severe fighting in France. Wounded at Loos in July, 1917. he underwent much suffering and ultimately received his discharge at Cromarty. He was formerly a gardener, and was working in Edinburgh at the outbreak of war. A married man. 32 years of age. he leaves a widow and five sons. Three brothers of the deceased have been killed in the war. namely. Private J. J. S. Douglas. K. 0.S.B., October 13, 1914; Private T. Douglas, R.F.A. April 15. 1917; and Sergt. G. Douglas. Tank Corps. November 20, 1917. A brother-in-law, John Dickson. Machine Gun Corps, was killed on November 8, 1917. The only remaining son of Mr and Mrs Douglas, Sergt. Wm. Douglas, has been discharged from the Royal Engineers after three years' service.

The Douglas brothers appear in a couple of paragraphs in my new book and I also mention John Dickson but I had no further information on him.
