The memorial to the 'Men of Bute' who fought under Sir John Stewart and fell to a man at the Battle of Falkirk in 1298 takes the form of a stone cairn with memorial tablet set onto the face.
The cairn stands adjacent to the entrance to the Tourist Information Offices on the seafront.

It never ceases to amaze me what is turning up. A War of Independence memorial for the 1298 Battle of Flakirk on Bute!

Thanks for finding this one Jim.

Regards

Adam

This is a plaque on a rectangular plan, rough dressed, stone about 1m high. The stone is sited just by the entrance to the Isle of Bute Discovery Centre, close to the Pier. The main Rothsay War Memorial - 'the angel'- is only 20 or 30 meters away.

The plaque reads:

IN HONOUR OF THE 'MEN OF BUTE'
WHO, UNDER THE COMMAND OF
SIR JOHN STEWART
FELL TO A MAN
AT THE BATTLE OF FALKIRK 22ND JULY 1298.
YOU FOUGHT FOR WALLACE ON FALKIRK'S FIELD
JOHN STEWART'S MEN WITH SWORD AND SHIELD
BUT O'ERPOW'RD THUS! YOUR FATE WAS SEALED
FOR FREEDOM FELL.
