Percy Reed Dodd – age 33 – Captain, 2nd Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
Percy was commissioned from Royal Military College in January 1901 and served in the South African Wars. He was promoted to Lieutenant in March 1904 and to Captain in April 1912. He was with the 1st Battalion in South Africa in 1911 but he landed with the 2nd Battalion at Le Havre in November 1914. Percy was killed on the opening day of the battle of Nueve Chapelle.
Born 1882 in Perth. Son of the late John Dodd (formerly of the 78th Highlanders Regiment and Chief Constable of Perthshire) who had been born in Crailing and died there in 1892, and of Georgina Elphinstone Gordon (Robertson-Ross) Dodd.
Killed in Action on 10 March 1915 and buried in Brown's Road Military Cemetery, Festubert, France.


William Fairbairn – age 32 – Private (14048) 2nd Battalion, Scots Guards.
William served his apprenticeship as a gardener when the family were at Chesterhouse, Hownam where his father was a shepherd. In 1911 he was a gardener at Gorddinog Gardens, Llanfairfechan, Caernarfonshire, North Wales. He enlisted at Jedburgh in June 1915 and joined his battalion in France in November. William was wounded by an exploding shell and died in hospital at Etaples.
Born 1884 in Hownam, Roxburghshire as William Waters Fairbairn. Son of Robert and Ellen (Waters) Fairbairn of Palace Farm, Crailing and of Jedfoot Lodge, Jedburgh.
Died of Wounds on 29 September 1916 and buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, France.


Robert Kerss – age 19 – Private (S/2302) 1st Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
Robert was a forester on the Monteviot Estate, Crailing when he enlisted. He joined his battalion, which had arrived from India in October 1914, in March 1915 but he was killed six weeks later at Aubers.
Born 1896 in Jedburgh, Roxburghshire. Son of the late Robert Kerss, gamekeeper with the Marquis of Lothian at Ferniehirst, Jedburgh (died 1914) and Margaret Rathie (Sinton) Kerss of Nisbet Mill, Crailing.
Missing in Action on 9 May 1915 and named on the Le Touret Memorial, France.


William Young – age 20 – Private (S/7693) 8th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
William landed with his battalion at Boulogne in May 1915. He died just over a year later in the 7th Canadian General Hospital in Etaples.
Born 1896 in Crailing as William Waugh Young. Son of the late Jessie Tait (Waugh) Young (died 1904) and of William Young of Nisbet Level Crossing Gate House, Crailing.
Died of Wounds on 27 July 1916 and buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, France.

William and his older brother George are both named on the Roll of Hour as Black Watch. George died after the war but while still on service.

George Young – age 25 – Sapper (WR/276618) 49th Broad Gauge Operating Company, Royal Engineers.
George landed as Private (S/7225) with the 8th Battalion of the Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) at Boulogne in May 1915. He was wounded at Loos in September and evacuated to the military hospital at West Bridgford, Nottingham. He joined the Royal Engineers as Sapper (307466) and at the end of the war George was on service at Calais where he was found to have accidentally drowned.
Born 1894 in Crailing. Son of the late Jessie Tait (Waugh) Young (died 1904) and of William Young of Nisbet Level Crossing Gate House, Crailing. Died on Service on 22 January 1920 and buried in Les Baraques Military Cemetery, Sangatte, France.
