Just by pure coincidence I found the following article whilst perusing articles from The Scotsman;

THE SCOTSMAN 27.12.1920
ARBROATH

A fine brass mural tablet was yesterday forenoon unveiled in the vestbule of Ladyloan United Free Church, Arbroath, by the Rev. James Cameron, to the memory of 26 men connected with the congregation who fell in the war. Alongside of the memorial has been placed a framed oak vellum roll of honour bearing 174 names.

So the memorial posted here, if what the minister says is correct, is from Ladyloan Parish Church. This then begs the question where is the Ladyloan U.F. Memorial and velum RoH. I hope more memorials will be found as we go but thus far the amount of Arbroath church memorials that 'appear' to have been lost is frightening.

Just to add to the confusion, if any more was needed, the former Erskine U.F. and Princes Street U.F. Churches merged in 1957 to form St Columba's, then merged with the united congregations of Ladyloan Parish & Ladyloan U.F. So the plaque could possibly be from Erskine or Princes St.

I noted that Ladyloan Parish Church united with the former Ladyloan Free Church in 1941, the former building being demolished.
Do we have any definite information that would tell us from which congregation this plaque is from?

There are only 8 names on this memorial, so this doesn't appear to be either of the Ladyloan church memorials.

Here's the details I've found in the Arbroath Herald for a report of the unveiling of a mural tablet in Ladyloan Parish Church, on 23rd November 1919. Located beside the pulpit on the wall, a service was conducted by the churches Rev J. McWilliam and the unveiling was performed by Provost A.C. Anderson.

The article related 15 names which are as follows:

Pte. Alexander Cameron 1/6th Black Watch
Pte. D.S. Croall, Black Watch
AB. George Rodger Dawson, R.N.V.R.
Sgt. James Carrie Douglas M.M. 5th Batt. Cameron Highlanders
AB. William Wilson Fleming, H.M.S. 'Goliath'
Gnr. Thomas Gordon, 51st Div. R.F.A.
Pte. David Fairweather Jamieson, 18th King's Liverpool Regt.
Pte. Alexander Lindsay, 1st Black Watch
L/Cpl. James Milne, 1/5th Black Watch
Pte. Alexander Mitchell, 1st Gordon Highlanders
Pte. James Morrison, Scots Guards
Pte. Alexander McKnight, 1st K.O.S.B.
Cpl. William Rose, K.O.S.B.
Pte. Thomas Stewart Smith, 16th Royal Scots
AB. Henry Tocher, Minesweeper 'Queen of the North'

So this must be from elsewhere?!

Derek.

It looks a bit like the Ladyloan WW2 memorial in its style and the information. Could this be the Ladyloan U.F. memorial if it isn't the parish church one and the information in the newspaper is actually wrong? (although mixing up 8 and 26 is a bit of a stretch!)

Given the former Ladyloan UF church became the new parish church in 1941 the Ladyloan WW2 memorial was possibly more likely to follow the style of the Ladyloan UF WW1 memorial though.

Adam

P.s. with the names and information above there should be a thread for the Ladyloan PC WM with 'Photos required'

Excellent work in identifying this memorial. I have now edited the thread's title.

The unveiling report indicates that a bible, bookmark and cover for the communion table were also presented to the church in memory of those who served and died.
The lectern was unveiled by Mr David Thomson, father of one of those who died.
