Just wanted to say that all of the Civic Memorials in Dumfriesshire have now been researched and have been added to the Project.
A series of big thank yous for all of your help and especially to the "usual suspects" - but also to Gladys (Teddy) and to some new pals, Rene Anderson at Annan, Sheila Ruddick at Eastriggs & Gretna and Sandy Hall at Moniaive.
Rene recently edited and published an updated booklet on Annan's War Memorials and War Graves (funded by the D&G Council's Museum Service)
while Sheila has produced booklets on the Eastriggs Parish and Gretna Parish War Memorials on behalf of the Eastriggs & Gretna Heritage Group.
Sandy involved me in a project after spotting this article in the D&G Standard of 16/1/1915
"A large crowd gathered at Moniaive railway station yesterday forenoon to witness the departure of 15 recruits with the 10.40 train. The lads, who were bound for Stirling, got hearty send-off, ringing cheers being raised the train steamed out of the station. Others are to follow in the course of a few days."
They were all bound for the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders and their service numbers were in the S/74xx to S/76xx range.
Almost all of the men we identified turned out to have been shepherds, which has left us with the questions of how did men working the fields and hills around Glencairn decide to come together and enlist - (all without the benefit of "soshal meja"!) - and why the Argylls rather than the local KOSB? _________________ Ken |

Well done Ken, a fabulous and tenacious job. And thanks for the assistance you've given me out West. I understand you are massing on the Border now. |

Congratulations, thank you and well done.
Having done Berwickshire a few years back I know how big a task it'd be. |
