Penicuik War Memorial
Location: Jackson Street Entrance to George V Playing Fields
OS Ref: NT 233 602

This memorial would have been in a prominent position when built but now feels a bit hidden away.

The council could do with cutting back the trees a bit.

Note also a more recent addition of a Great War name.

The memorial panels are not in great condition and it was difficult to photgraph the names. I will post them here but please contact me if you want a name checked on the original images.

Great War additions

The quality isn't that good on this image but the original is a bit better.

Later Great War addition

Here is a transcription of the names in alphabetical order. On the memorial the are split into three. Officers, then Non-Commissioned Officers and then Privates. Within each split they are listed alphabetically except William G Birrell who gets pride of place but I'll explain why in the next post.

Most names are Royal Scots which is no surprise but note the large number of men serving in the HLI in the Great War. There are also quite a few RAMC and RFA which makes me suspect there were TF units recruiting in this area. There are quite a few in the Navy and a lot of RAF in the Second World War

Penicuik has a Major General listed. You don't see many of them on civic memorials.

Surgeon General Birrell is given pride of place on the Great War list. He was 59 at his death in 1918 and had seen a lot of campaigning in his time. Gallipoli is briefly mentioned in his CWGC entry. In 1915 He was actually the former Director of Medical Services, Mediterranean Expeditionary Force.
