‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He showed great skill in handling his company in an attack on enemy trenches, capturing a large section od trench, and killing and capturing many of the enemy. He personally supervised the work of establishing string posts, which was successfully accomplished under heavt enfilade fire from hostile machine guns, and his coolness and energy were most marked. In the recent Birthday Honours List, the name of Captain J. Oliphant Mackellar, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders appeared as having been awarded the Military Cross. Intimation is now to hand that he has received a bar to his cross.
Biography, George Watson’s College, Edinburgh
James O. Mackellar, M.C., Lieutenant-Colonel, The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, only son of the late Rev. D. C. Mackellar, U.F. Church, Denny, was born on 13th November 1894 and attended Watson's from 1906 to 1914. During his last session he was Captain of the School, Captain of the 1st XV and a member of the 1st XI. His intention on leaving school was to prepare for entrance to the Indian Police, but on the outbreak of war he enlisted in the 9th Royal Scots and in December 1914 entered Sandhurst, ultimately receiving a commission in The A. & S. H. He went to France with the 2nd Battalion and gained the M.C. and Bar. Transferring to the Reserve in the early twenties, he spent most of the years between the wars abroad. Recalled to the colours in 1939, he left a tea estate in Ceylon to rejoin his old battalion, then stationed in Malaya. Later he was given command of the 4th (Pahang) Battalion, F.M.S.V.F., with which he saw service on. the Peninsula, being mentioned in dispatches. Taken prisoner he died at Nakou Patou, Thailand, in February 1945.

Named on the Colvend Parish WW2 Memorial in Kirkcudbrightshire as:
FLT. SGT. ALLAN K. EDGAR, R.A.F.V.R.
Allan Knowles Edgar - age 22 - Flight Sergeant (1380422) 77 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Allan was educated at the George Watson's College in Edinburgh from 1934 to 1939 before he returned to Argentina to enter his father's business, but in September 1939 he returned to the UK to enlist.
The family travelled regularly between Liverpool and Buenos Aires from 1925 with Allan’s last trips being in 1937 and 1939. He was a member of the Buenos Aires Cricket and Rugby Club.
Allan's Halifax bomber took off from RAF Elvington in Yorkshire for a raid on the Skoda works in Pilsen, Czechoslovakia but the aircraft caught fire and crashed in southern Germany. He was buried in Boeblingen Cemetery, Baden-Württemberg but re-interred in Durnbach in July 1948.
Born 1921 at West Derby, Lancashire. Son of Thomas Edgar, who was born in1892 at Kippford, Colvend, and of Elsie (Knowles) Edgar who married in 1918 at Prescott, Lancashire.
Killed in Action on 17 April 1943 and buried in Durnbach War Cemetery, Bad Tolz, Germany.
Also named on the Memorial to the Fallen in St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, Buenos Aires and on the Argentine British Community Council memorial. _________________ Ken |

LT. ALAN K. MOTHERSILL 1st Para. Sqn. RE
Alan Keith Mothersill – age 21 – Lieutenant (226306) Parachute Squadron, Royal Engineers.
Alan's father became minister of St. Cuthbert's Parish church in 1927 and Alan was educated at Kirkcudbright Academy and at George Watson's College in Edinburgh from 1936 to 1939. He was studying Engineering at Edinburgh University when he enlisted in 1941 and he was commissioned in February 1942. Alan was killed, serving alongside the 2nd Parachute Battalion, in the cork forest of Tamera in north east Tunisia and he was buried there. Alan was re-interred in Tabarka in May 1944.
Born 1921 in Montreal, Canada. Son of the Revd. John Elmore Mothersill, who had served as a Chaplain in the Canadian Army in WW1, and of Eleanor Oughtred Mothersill, of St. Cuthbert's Manse, Kirkcudbright.
Killed in Action on 10 March 1943 and buried in Tabarka Ras Rajel War Cemetery, Tunisia.
Also named on the Kirkcudbright Academy Memorial, on the Old College Memorial in Edinburgh University and on the Canadian Virtual War Memorial. _________________ Ken |

Wigtownshire Free Press (11/4/1918): Captain Charles Inglis Clark (died of wounds) was the only son of Dr and Mrs Inglis Clark, of 29 Lauder Road, Edinburgh, and Oakwood, Rosslyn Castle, and was educated at George Watson's College, and later at the University of Edinburgh, where he took the degree of Bachelor of Science in Natural Science, with honours in Physiology. Subsequently he was involved in scientific work with the firm of Duncan, Flockhart @ Co., Edinburgh, until the outbreak of war. He applied for a commission in the first week of August 1914 and was gazetted Lieutenant in the Army Service Corps a month later. He was wounded at Givenchy in November 1914 and soon obtained a Captaincy. The deceased, who was a son-in-law of Mrs Matthews Frederick of Gass, was 29 years of age, and leaves a widow and son. |

Named on the Teviothead Parish War Memorial in Roxburghshire as:
EDWARD J. ELLIOT MAJOR R.A.M.C.
Edward John Elliot – age 37 – Captain, 10th Stationary Hospital, Royal Army Medical Corps.
He had been educated at George Watson's College in Edinburgh and at Edinburgh University where he studied medicine and graduated M.B., Ch.B. in 1904. He became a house surgeon at the Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford before he joined the RAMC as a Lieutenant in July 1906 and he was promoted to Captain three years later. He was at the Military Hospital in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1911 and he landed in France on 15 August 1914. Notice of his promotion to Major appeared after his death and was withdrawn. Edward was killed during an air raid on the hospital in St.Omer.
Born 1881 in Castleton, Roxburghshire. Son of the late John Elliot of Binks, Roxburghshire (died 1909) and of Jane Pott (Oliver) Elliot of Manvers House, Southsea, Hampshire. Husband of Dorothy Allin (Smith) Elliot of "Osmington," Canada Grove, Bognor, Sussex who he married in 1910 in Marylebone, London.
Killed by enemy action on 23 May 1918 and buried in Longuenesse (St. Omer) Souvenir Cemetery, France. _________________ Ken |
