The Stirling memorial/roll of honour has Alexander Young A&SH, Ochil Cottage, Burnside, Stirling; there is a report in the 1st August 1916 Stirling Observer of his death in Ruchill Hospital.

I can't find him on CWGC or SNWM. His death certificate states he died on 27th July 1916 with the cause of death pulmonary tuberculosis and diabetes mellitus. Thanks to Ancestry's free weekend, I've found his discharge papers (service number 4598) which state he was discharged on 22nd May 1916 as he was medically unfit - tubercle on lung; this was due to active service - hardship and exposure. The register of soldier's effects gives just his discharge date (quite often they state "died after discharge" but not in this case).

Is it possible he is a non-comm???

Sandra - this looks like a clear-cut case. I did wonder if it might have been a pre-existing condition since he enlisted in November 1915 and was discharged in the following May, but the medical report clearly states "Originated April 1916 France".
Sad to say that Army non-comm cases do not seem to be getting processed at the moment as the MoD has withdrawn the liaison post but you should send the details on to the In From the Cold Project just to confirm that your man is eligible.
Well done in finding him Very Happy

Thank you Ken for confirming it looks like a possibility for "official" commemoration.

Thank you John for the email address to submit the info - you guessed correctly I've never done this before!

I don't think there's any doubt about your man being a non-comm Sandra.

Good luck with collating all the relevant info.

I emailed Terry at "In from the Cold" and had a very prompt reply. Alexander's case will be submitted today. It could take up to 10 months as there has been an issue at MoD, which is now resolved, but there is a backlog of 200 cases.

Thanks to all who gave advice on here, by PM and by email, I had sent all the relevant paperwork to Terry with the first email.

I've just had an email from Terry from In the Cold:-

Alexander YOUNG was accepted and added by CWGC today.

The grave verification process will now begin.

Terry's email was sent at 11.11 - how spooky is that!!

PS I don't know how to change the title to *now commemorated* but I'm sure someone will!!

Sandra - well done on your "first" Very Happy

If you log on, go to your original post and edit it - then you can change the title to included "now commemorated".

Then you can do your little jig Laughing
