This interesting article from the Washington State Department of Transport is about a Memorial Highway, which was first planted in the 1930's. Gradually all the elm trees died off, but it is now being replanted with one tree for each of the 50 casualties from the county.
From the Skagit County Roll of Honour we know that two of them were born at Inverkeilor, Scotland ,but are not commemorated there:
Private William Low Stewart, 2nd Black Watch, died Marseilles 13 October 1914
Private James Reed Stewart 2nd Scots Guards, died Battle of the Somme, 27 March 1918
Also there is a Robert Frazer Warren, Private 6th Battn 20th Engineers, US Army, born in the West Indies, died 5 February 1918, and buried at Kilngahton, Isle of Islay (but, clearly, not on CWGC lists)
