His entry only lists very basic details.

Update on previous posts of September 2013 regarding my great uncle Andrew Huldberg who was included on the Bo'ness War Memorial when in fact he did survive WW1.
Through the International Red Cross records I have discovered that Andrew fought in the first battle of Ypres. He was captured on 14/11/1914 and interred in Wittenberg POW camp on 16/12/1914. He remained there until 3/4/1916 when he was transferred to Altengrabow Camp. On 19/9/1917 he was transferred to Zerbst Camp. I do not know when he was repatriated but I take it that he probably remained in Zerbst until then.
There is a record of my great grandmother's (his mother) enquiry to the Red Cross about him dated December 1916.
The family had moved away from Bo'ness and were living in Leith at the time of the 1911 Census. I think that they may have moved away as early as 1902/03. Although Andrew and his siblings were all born in Bo'ness most of them continued to live in Leith or Edinburgh for the rest of their lives. As Andrew and the family had moved away from Bo'ness several years before the outbreak of WW1 I wonder why he was included, albeit erroneously, on that particular memorial?

Just a guess .....

Possibly someone local put his name forward and if the family had no further contact with the Bo'ness area, the details of his repatriation may not have been known.

Delighted to announce that Bo’ness Town Trust Association has received a grant of £10,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund’s First World War: then and now programme to undertake a project called “Without Fear: tracing the Great War stories of the fallen on the Bo’ness War Memorial”.

The latin phrase Sine Metu meaning “Without Fear” forms part of the Bo’ness town coat of arms. This project aims to discover more about the 398 men named on the Bo’ness War Memorial who died during WW1.

The Association has asked members Robert Jardine, Richard Hannah and Alan Gow (me!) to undertake the project on it's behalf. We are all local amateur researchers with an interest in WW1.

The results of this research will be found in an illustrated book, website, exhibition and talks.

As a long time user of this brilliant site for my own family military research I hope that members can help with our mammoth task of researching our names. In return I will share info on our findings with SMRG and also make the offer to help anyone out there with their own research where there is a link to Bo'ness.

All the best,

Alan Gow (Gow67)

Hello Alan
I got your message but I am blocked from sending you a reply - not sure why! I would love to have any information you have about my great uncle. What can I do now.
Thank you.

Regards
Diane

I've PM'ed Diane with information that we have found including a photo of Andrew Huldberg from his Merchant Navy records after the war.

We think that Andrew Huldberg’s inclusion on the Bo’ness War Memorial is simply an administrative error, and not the only one.

After WW1 there was some uncertainty in Bo’ness as to if and when a War memorial would actually be built and indeed it didn’t happen until 1924.

As far as we can make out, the criteria for inclusion seems a bit vague, and there are no written records we have found so far to confirm. It appears if you were in, or had been in, the armed forces and you died for any reason between 1914 and the WM being built your name could be included. Information suggests that there was a public consultation exercise but if there were no local family members to offer corrections, as is probably the case with Andrew, then the name would be included on the WM.

The POW angle would perhaps account for Andrew’s inclusion but a local newspaper article reports that there was a ceremony in January 1919 to honour returning POWs and according to the report, Andrew was in attendance!

The suggestion is that information was obtained in Bo’ness before 1924 to the effect that Andrew was now deceased. How that happened will probably remain a mystery, but despite the newspaper article I can imagine someone thinking that if Andrew wasn’t around then he must have perished in Germany.

Name: ROBERTSON, JAMES ALAN
Initials: JA
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Flying Officer (Pilot)
Service Number: 119168
Regiment/Service: Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, 512 Sqdn
Date of Death: 6/10/1943
Age: 27
Additional Information: Son of William and Janet S. Robertson, of Bo'ness.
Grave Reference: Sec H, Old WallBorder, Grave 292
Cemetery: Bo'ness Cemetery

Wigtownshire Free Press (12/10/1943): Many people in Stranraer will regret to learn of the death on active service of Flying-Officer, James Alan Robertson, RAF, a nephew of Mr James Robertson. He was the younger son of the late Mr William Robertson, draper, and of Mrs Robertson, Bo'ness.

Early in the war Flying-Officer Robertson joined the Royal Artillery, but later transferred to the RAF and went to Canada under the Empire Training Scheme. Subsequently he became a most experienced pilot in the Ferry and Transport Commands, and was entrusted with many important missions.

He was 27 years of age and had just qualified as a surveyor when he enlisted. Robertson lost his life to avoid crashing his plane in the streets of Marylebone, one of London's busiest districts.

After his plane had hit a barage balloon, Pilot-Officer Robertson kept it in the air until it reached Regents Park. He and his crew, except for one who managed to bale out, were killed when the plane crashed on a sports pavilion near the zoo. But not one civilian in Marylebone received a scratch.

The Mayor of Marylebone, on his own behalf and in the name of the grateful citizens of the borough, sent a message of sympathy and admiration to the pilot's mother. "Your son, by skillful handling of his machine over the densely populated centres of London, undoubtedly avoided what might have been a disaster of the first magnitude, and one can only feel distressed at the irony of fate which caused his gallant effort, successful in respect of his fellow men and women, to be unavailing as far as he, his crew and the passengers were concerned."

Mrs Roberston did not guess her son was London's unknown hero until the mayor's letter arrived. "I have written thanking the Mayor and people of Marylebone for their kindness in recogniing my son's gallantry," she said, "but pointed out that I was loath to see him brought into prominence when many of our lads are dying so nobly."

The Bo'ness War Memorial Without Fear Project has culminated with the launch of our book "Without Fear - World War One Stories of the Men on the Bo'ness War Memorial". The official launch event was held at a packed Bo'ness Hippodrome on 23rd July, 2019.

The book itself took 3 years to research, 8 months to write, contains 20 chapters over 568 pages, is an A4 hardback and weighs 2.3kg.

The book can be bought at the Inkspot and Silverleaf bookshop in South Street, Bo’ness and also very soon in Waterstones, Falkirk.

In the book we have acknowledged all users of this Group website, but in particular Anne Anderson, Ken Morrison and Mark Duffy, who were all integral to the success of our project.
