The Stirling Roll of Honour has:
Morrison, James M., Major, 5th Royal Irish Rifles
There was no-one with these details on CWGC and too many others with this name to be able to identify him.
Thanks to the British Newspaper Archive, I found a death notice for James Maidment Morrison in August 1915 stating that he had died in Alexandria of pneumonia following wounds received in action in the Dardanelles. Armed with these details I found him:
MORRISON, JAMES MAIDMENT
Sergeant
Service Number 752
Died 11/06/1915
13th Bn.
Australian Infantry, A.I.F.
ALEXANDRIA (CHATBY) MILITARY AND WAR MEMORIAL CEMETERY L 105
Hmm, not a major and not in the Royal Irish Rifles!!
His Australian service record shows that he had served 14 years with the 53rd Regiment of RIR. It also states he was born in Stirling so it looks as if I do have the right one.
Another brick wall demolished - only 36 to go!! |

James Gwynne and Alfred McArthur Gwynne listed on the WW1 panels were brothers and the oldest and youngest sons of John Gwynne and Mary McGillivray. They were cousins of my great grandmother.
James was serving as a Lance Corporal with the 2nd Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders when he died on 23 Mar 1916, aged 31.
Alfred was a Private with the 1st/7th Argyl and Sutherland Highlanders and was killed at Beaumont Hamel on 15 Nov 1916 a week before his 20th birthday.
I have a copy of another 'patriotic Stirling families' clipping from the Stirling Observer, dated 25 Dec 1915 which gives their photos and those of their brothers [John, William and Joseph] and brother-in-law (James White) who also served (and who all survived). This mentions that there are 10 cousins named Gwynne serving with the forces and I have tracked down most of these and a few other cousins not called Gwynne, spread across the mining communities of the Central Belt and as far afield as Worcester. I'm happy to send this to anyone who may be interested, as I cannot attach it here.
On the WW2 memorial, the John Gwynne listed is the son of the John Gwynne who is listed in the Stirling Observer clipping of Dec 1915. The younger John Gwynne was a Private in the 2nd Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and died on 8 Mar 1942 of enteritis in Kuala Lumpur. John was a regular soldier with 11 years service. His brother [/img]James also served with the A&SH and was captured in Normandy and then a POW in Germany. James survived the war.
Hope that's of interest to someone.

The Trustees of the SNWM at the Edinburgh Castle have in the last weeks accepted the Casualty of the Great War on the Black Watch roll of honour :
Pte 2418 Peter Chalmers Ritchie , Royal Highlanders The Black watch died of wounds on 9th September 1920 in hospital in Glasgow .
Hie was from Kirkcaldy and joined the Black watch in 1912 and was wounded to his head on Xmas day 1914 having only landed at Havre on 14th August 1914 from Southampton . he was discharged from the army unfit for further war service on 17th June 1915 and married in 1917 and resided at 20 Broad Street Stirling
The SNWM accepted the casualty as a casualty of War although Derek Robertson of Arbroath ( Delboy ) submitted a file to the MOD but they have a long back log of files to be reviewed for the CWGC index
Peter RITCHIE is listed on the Stirlinig War Memorial but not on the war memorial of Kirkcaldy where he was born .
