Very possibly Mike. In fact initially I thought the "M.M. Police" might refer to the Military Mounted Police before I found his award of a Military Medal.
The D&G Standard reported that his medal had arrived at the battalion a few hours before he was killed - so he did not see it.

Only his service record would have cleared this up (or not!) but there's no sign of it and the newspaper report doesn't mention his enlistment.

Another "odd" one is the final name in the right-hand column:

PTE. JAS. WILLIAMSON, NEW FOUNDRS.

He was in fact: James Williamson, Private (23/1586) 1/7th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers.

The names, ranks and service on the first line of each entry are as they appear on the memorial in Durisdeer Village. The entry in brackets is the name as it appears on the memorial near the former Carronbridge Station.

PTE. JOSEPH BARNETT, A.& S. HLDRS. (JOSEPH H. BARNETT, A.&S.H.)
Joseph Hill Barnett – age 19 – Piper/Private (S/3645) 11th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Joseph was a gamekeeper in Durisdeer when he enlisted in Dumfries in September 1914. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915 but was killed two months later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1895 in Ballantrae, Ayrshire. Son of Peter and Hughine Campbell (Munro) Barnett of Laggan Cottage, Ballantrae, Ayrshire.
Missing in Action on 26 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Durisdeer Parish Church Roll of Honour and on the Ballantrae War Memorial.


PTE. JOHN BELL, HLD. LT. INFANTRY. (JOHN BELL, S.R.)
John Bell – age 19 – Private (241509) 1/8th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
John was resident in Crawford, Lanarkshire when he enlisted at Lanark as Private (8074) in the Highland Light Infantry in 1915. He was posted as Private (5712) to the 1/8th Scottish Rifles in Egypt and served in Palestine where he was fatally wounded. John died in the 74th Casualty Clearing Station at the Deir el Belah railhead.
Born 1898 in Wamphray, Dumfriesshire. Son of William and Annie (Dinwoodie) Bell of Upper Dalveen, Durisdeer.
Died of Wounds on 2 November 1917 and buried in Deir el Belah War Cemetery, Palestine.
Also named on the Durisdeer Parish Church Roll of Honour.


PTE. RICHARD BRYDEN, K.O.S.B. (RICHARD BRYDEN, K.O.S.B.)
Richard Bryden – age 26 – Private (13610) 7th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Richard was a ploughman at Ingleston, Durisdeer when he enlisted in September 1914. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915 but was killed two months later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1889 in Durisdeer. Son of Janet Ferguson Bryden and of James Stitt.
In 1891 and 1901 he lived with his grandparents Richard and Wilhelmina Bryden in Durisdeer but in 1911 age 21 he was a ploughman at Aucheson Farm, Mennock, Sanquhar, Dumfriesshire.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Durisdeer Parish Church Roll of Honour, on the Mennock Village and School memorials and on the Sanquhar Parish War Memorial.

James Cairns – age 23 – Private (21633) 12th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
James enlisted as Private (22861) in the King's Own Scottish Borderers but was posted to the 12th HLI in France.
Born 1891 in Port of Menteith, Perthshire. Son of the late William Cairns (died 1914) and of Margaret (Wise) Cairns of Holestane Cottages and of Moss Side, Carronbridge, Durrisdeer.
Missing in Action on 13 August 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Durisdeer Parish Church Roll of Honour.


PTE . WILLIAM CARSON, WEST YORKS. (WILLIAM H. CARSON, W.Y.)
William Hewatson Carson – age 29 – Private (51766) 3rd (Reserve) Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own)
William was a hedger, living at Fardingbank, Durisdeer, when he enlisted as Private (21541) in the West Riding Regiment. He also served as Private (14536) in the Labour Corps but was with the 3rd West Yorks at Whitley Bay, Tynemouth, Northumberland when he contracted pneumonia and died.
Born 1890 in Maxwelltown Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of the late William Hewatson Carson (died 1904 in Dumfries) and of Catherine Jane (McGuire) Carson who had married in 1886 in Morton, Dumfriesshire.
In 1901 the family were in Port Dundas, Glasgow.
Died on Service on 20 November 1918 and buried in Morton (Thornhill) Cemetery, Dumfriesshire. (CWG)


PTE. HERBERT CROSBIE, K.O.S.B. (HERBERT H. CROSBIE, K.O.S.B.)
Herbert Herries Crosbie – age 24 – Private (240094) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Herbert enlisted as Private (1031) and joined his battalion in Egypt. He served in Palestine before moving with his battalion to France in April 1918.
Born 1894 in Maxwelltown, Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Robert Crosbie and of Mary Johnstone Duncan (Herries) Crosbie of Drumlanrig Mains, Durisdeer.
Killed in Action on 17 June 1918 and buried in Ecoivres Military Cemetery, Mont-St. Eloi, France.

PTE. JAMES HENDRIE, SCOTS GUARDS. (JAMES HENDRIE, S.G.)
James Hendrie – age 28 – Private (13043) 1st Battalion, Scots Guards.
James assisted on his father's farm and was a well known public speaker especially on the subject of Unionism in Ireland. He enlisted in January 1915 and went to France a year later. James wrote a series of letters which were published in the Dumfries and Galloway Standard and in April 1917 the “Standard” produced a book of the letters, with “Foreword by Professor Wallace, Edinburgh, and other Tributes. Also, notes and photographs of Durisdeer men who have fallen during the war. Profits from the Book will form the nucleus of a Fund to erect a Permanent Memorial to fallen Soldiers from Durisdeer.”
Born 1888 in Galston, Ayrshire. Son of David and Jeanie (Lochhead) Hendrie of Castlehill, Durisdeer.
Missing in Action on 15 September 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Durisdeer Parish Church Roll of Honour.

David Hendrie – age 23 – Corporal (S/16893) 6th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
David managed the dairy on his father's farm and was a well known local musician. He enlisted in November 1914 and joined his battalion in France in August 1915.
Born c.1893/1896 in Galston, Ayrshire. (Source: CWGC age 23 = 1893 and 1911 census age 15 = 1896 but I cannot trace)
Son of David and Jeanie (Lochhead) Hendrie of Castlehill, Durisdeer.
Died of Wounds on 22 October 1916 and buried in Becourt Military Cemetery, Becordel-Becourt, Somme, France.
Also named on the Durisdeer Parish Church Roll of Honour.


PTE. WILLIAM HUNTER, ROYAL SCOTS. (WILLIAM HUNTER, R.S.)
William Hunter – age 27 – Private (29863) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots.
William was working as a hedger on the Drumlanrig Estate when he enlisted in February 1916. He had been in France for just a few weeks when he was killed. William's remains were recovered from the battlefield after the war and re-interred in Longueval.
Born 1889 in Penpont, Dumfriesshire. Son of Margaret (Hunter) Graham and step-son of James Graham of Carronbridge who married in 1899 in Penpont.
Killed in Action on 22 July 1916 and buried in London Cemetery and Extension, Longueval, Somme, France.
Also named on the Durisdeer Parish Church Roll of Honour and on the Penpont Parish War Memorial.

Richard Hyslop – age 23 – Private (240947) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Richard had worked with a miller at Enterkinfoot before becoming a ploughman at Gateslack Farm, Durisdeer. He joined his battalion as Private (2882) in Egypt in January 1916 and served in Palestine where he was wounded before being killed at Gaza.
Born 1893 in Penpont, Dumfriesshire as Richard Brown Hyslop. Son of the late Robert Hyslop of Penpont and of Nicholas (Bryden) Hyslop of Gateslack Cottages, Durisdeer.
Killed in Action on 19 April 1917 and buried in Gaza War Cemetery, Palestine.
Also named on the Durisdeer Parish Church Roll of Honour and on the Penpont Parish War Memorial.

Thomas Hyslop – age 19 – Lance Corporal (29301) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers
Thomas was a 16 year old farm lad at Hollis when he enlisted in November 1915. He was posted to the 2nd KOSB in France in December 1916.
Born 1898 in Penpont, Dumfriesshire. Son of the late Robert Hyslop of Penpont and of Nicholas (Bryden) Hyslop of Gateslack Cottages, Durisdeer.
In 1901 & 1911 the family lived at Bilboa, Penpont.
Missing in Action on 9 April 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Durisdeer Parish Church Roll of Honour and on the Penpont Parish War Memorial.


PTE. JAMES IRVING, HLD. LT. INFANTRY. (JAMES IRVING, H.L.I.)
James Irving – age 41 – Private (41806) 12th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
James was a gamekeeper with the Duke of Buccleugh at Newcastleton for four years and then moved to the Drumlanrig Estate for three years before he enlisted in the King's Own Scottish Borderers. He was posted as Private (5359) to the 2nd KOSB in France and transferred to the HLI. His remains were recovered from the battlefield in March 1920 and he was re-interred at Ypres.
Born 1875 in Canonbie, Dumfriesshire. Son of James and Mary (Carruthers) Irving of Canonbie. Husband of Janet Jackson (Coulthard) Irving of Holestane Cottage, Durisdeer who he married in 1902 in Westerkirk, Dumfriesshire.
Killed in Action on 27 July 1917 and buried in Ypres Reservoir Cemetery, Belgium.

PTE. SAMUEL LAIDLAW, ROY. SCOTS. FUS. (SAMUEL M. LAIDLAW, R.S.F.)
Samuel Moffat Laidlaw – age 34 – Private (23177) 6th/7th Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
Sam worked with his older brother Robert as a roadman in the Durisdeer district until he enlisted in March 1916. He was killed by a shell while he was working with a party of Engineers near Martinpuich and was buried there but was re-interred at Miraumont after the war.
Born 1882 in Durisdeer. Son of the late John and Agnes (Moffat) Laidlaw of Durisdeer Mill. He named his brothers, James, Robert and William, and his sisters Helen and Janet as his legatees.
Killed in Action on 11 October 1916 and buried in Adanac Military Cemetery, Miraumont, Somme, France.


PTE. JAMES LAIDLAW, M.M. CAM. HLDRS. (JAMES LAIDLAW, C.H.)
James Laidlaw, Military Medal – age 30 – Private (S/16483) 6th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
James was a stone-dyker, living in Durisdeer Village when he enlisted in January 1915. He joined his battalion in France in August 1915 but was killed a year later while trying to rescue a wounded comrade. The posthumous award of a M.M. was made in October 1916.
Born 1885 in Durisdeer. Son of the late John William Laidlaw (died 1912) and of Agnes Helen (Harper) Laidlaw of Durisdeer Village and of Dunteggan, Moniaive, Dumfriesshire.
Missing in Action on 24 August 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Durisdeer Parish Church Roll of Honour.


PTE. JAMES LITTLE, K.O.S.B. (JAMES LITTLE, K.O.S.B.)
James Little – age 22 – Private (240146) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James worked in the forestry department on the Drumlanrig Estate. He was a member of the Territorial 5th KOSB and was mobilised as Private (1168) in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 and then served in Egypt and in Palestine, where he was wounded in April 1917, before moving with his battalion to France in April 1918.
Born 1896 in Durisdeer. Son of the late Jane (Telfer) Little (died 1899) and of Walter Little of Carronbridge, Durisdeer.
Missing in Action on 2 September 1918 and named on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial, France.

Harry Lockhart – age 21 – Private (S/16221) 6th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Harry was a shepherd at Kilbirnie in Ayrshire when he enlisted in November 1914. He joined his battalion in France in August 1915.
Born 1895 in Durisdeer as Henry Babb Lockhart. Son of the late Mary Jane (Scott) Lockhart (died 1897) and of William Lockhart of High Gateslack, Durisdeer, of Park Farm, Irongray, Kirkcudbrightshire and of Merkland, Lochrutton, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Missing in Action on 29 January 1916 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.


PTE. JOHN McCARTNEY, K.O.S.B. (JOHN McCARTNEY, K.O.S.B.)
John McCartney – age 22 – Private (4323) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John joined his battalion at Gallipoli in September 1915 but was killed by a sniper.
Born 1893 in Minnigaff, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of John and Jane McCartney of Drumcruilton Farm, Durisdeer and later of Summerfield by Dumfries
Killed in Action on 27 November 1915 and buried in Redoubt Cemetery, Helles, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Durisdeer Parish Church Roll of Honour and on the Dumfries Burgh War Memorial.


CPL. ROBERT McCLOUNIE, M.M. POLICE. (ROBERT S. McCLOUNIE, K.O.S.B)
Note: All military records have McClunie.
Robert Shankland McClunie, Military Medal – age 31 – Private (30981) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
In 1911 Robert was a gamekeeper, living with his family at Whitrigg Cottage, Hutton-in-the-Forest, Penrith, Cumberland. His wife Maggie died that same year and he was employed in the game department at Drumlanrig when he enlisted. He was posted initially to the 6th KOSB but transferred to the 7th/8th Battalion. Robert had just been awarded a M.M. and the medal arrived at the battalion a few hours before he was killed.
Born 1887 in Morton, Dumfriesshire as McClounie. Son of Thomas and Helen (Shankland) McClounie of Auchensell and of Tibbers, Durisdeer. Husband of the late Margaret Nisbet (McGinley) McClounie of Hillhead, Durisdeer who he married in 1911 in Durisdeer.
Killed in Action on 4 October 1918 and buried in Philosophe British Cemetery, Mazingarbe, France.
Also named on the Durisdeer Parish Church Roll of Honour as McClunie.

PTE. FRANCIS R. R. McJANNET, A.I.F.
Francis Ronald Reid McJannet – age 23 – Private (698) 11th Battalion, Australian Infantry.
The McJannet family had emigrated to Western Australia some years earlier. Francis was farming when he enlisted at Helena Vale in September 1914 and he sailed from Freemantle in November. After further training in Egypt, the battalion landed at Gallipoli at what became known as ANZAC Cove. Francis was killed during the landings but was Mentioned in Despatches for “having performed various acts conspicuous galantry or valuable service.”
Born 1891 in Durisdeer. Son of Francis James McJannet and Janet Bell (Blacklock) McJannet, formerly of Gateslack Farm, Durisdeer and of Kununoppin, Western Australia.
Missing in Action on 25 April 1915 and named on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.

John Blacklock McJannet – age 20 – Trooper (123) 10th Australian Light Horse.
John was educated at Durisdeer School and Dumfries Academy before the family left for Australia. He was farming when he enlisted in October 1914 at Guildford in Western Australia and he sailed from Freemantle in February 1915, landing at Gallipoli in May. John was killed three months later at Walker's Ridge.
Born 1895 in Durisdeer. Son of Francis James McJannet and Janet Bell (Blacklock) McJannet, formerly of Gateslack Farm, Durisdeer and of Kununoppin, Western Australia.
Missing in Action on 7 August 1915 and named on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Dumfries Academy Memorial.

Another brother, Frederick William McJannet, Private (1992) also of the 11th Battalion, enlisted in January 1915 and sailed from Freemantle on 26 April 1915 but due to illness he was returned to Australia from Gallipoli in September 1915.


PTE. JOHN McLELLAN, CAM. HLDRS. (JOHN McLELLAN, C.H.)
John McLellan – age 27 – Private (S/22210) 6th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
John was employed in Glasgow and was living at 12 Vernon Street, Maryhill when he enlisted. He had been at the front for just two months when he was killed.
Born 1889 in Durisdeer. Son of the late Sophia (Dempster) McLellan (died 1901) and of James McLellan, night watcher of the railway tunnel at Carronbridge Station, Durisdeer.
Missing in Action on 24 August 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Durisdeer Parish Church Roll of Honour and on the Glasgow Roll of Honour.

James McMinn – age 19 – Private (12126) 2nd Battalion, Scots Guards.
James was a farm servant in the Thornhill area when he enlisted in November 1914. He joined his battalion in France on 23 April 1915 but he was killed three weeks later.
Born 1896 at Park Cottage in Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire as James Miller McMinn. Son of William and Janet (McWilliam) McMinn of Marchhouse, Durisdeer and of Glenairlie Bridge, Sanquhar, Dumfriesshire.
Missing in Action on 16 May 1915 and named on the Le Touret Memorial, France.
Also named on the Kirkconnel Parish War Memorial and on the Kirkconnel Church memorial in Dumfriesshire.


PTE. EDWARD MARTIN, CAN. MTD. RIF. (EDWARD MARTIN, C.M.R.)
Edward Martin – age 32 – Private (1263700) 1st Battalion, Canadian Mounted Rifles.
Edward had been in Canada for about eight years and was farming near Eston in Saskatchewan when he was drafted at Regina, in March 1918. He sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia in April and joined his battalion in France in August but was killed a month later.
Born 1886 in Closeburn, Dumfriesshire. Son of Thomas and Christina (Murray) Martin of Drumlanrig Mains and of Drumlanrig Park, Durisdeer.
Killed in Action on 29 September 1918 and buried in St. Olle British Cemetery, Raillencourt, France.
Also named on the Eston War Memorial.


GNR. ROBERT B. MILLAR, R.G.A. (ROBERT B. MILLAR, R.G.A.)
Note: All records show the family name as Miller.
Robert Bickett Miller – age 25 – Gunner (145668) 151st Heavy Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery.
Robert was a booking clerk with the Glasgow and Southwestern Railway Company when he enlisted in March 1917. He joined his battery in July but died three months later.
Born 1892 in Durisdeer Robert Bickett Miller. However the probate of his will gives his name as Robert Beckett Miller.
Son of James and Jane (Beck) Miller of Holestane, Durisdeer and of 7 North Drumlanrig Street, Thornhill, Dumfriesshire.
Died of Wounds on 30 October 1917 and buried in Bedford House Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Durisdeer Parish Church Roll of Honour and on the G&SW Railway Company memorial now in Ayr Station.

Robert Muir – age 23 – Private (12580) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert was brought up by his grandparents James and Mary Ann (Milligan) Muir in Carronbridge, Durisdeer. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in May 1915 but was killed four months later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1892 in Durisdeer as Robert Milligan Muir. Son of Isabella Muir, later Mrs Alexander Taylor of 15 High Street, Portobello, Midlothian who married in 1899 in Leith.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.


PTE. JOHN MURPHY, SCOTS RIFLES. (JOHN MURPHY, S.R.)
John Murphy – age 26 – Private (29194) 10th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
In 1911 John, age 19 was a fencer, living with his family at Farding Bank, Durisdeer.

George Rogerson – age 21 – Private (43228) 1st Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
George was a porter and ticket collector with the Glasgow and Southwestern Railway Company at Carronbridge Station, Durisdeer when he enlisted as Private (963) in the Highland Light Infantry. He landed with the 10th Battalion at Boulogne in May 1915 and then served with the 12th HLI before he transferred to the Scottish Rifles.
Born 1895 in Durisdeer. Son of Robert and Lilly (Twynholm) Rogerson of Drumshinnoch, Carronbridge, Durisdeer and of Southampton House, New Cumnock, Ayrshire.
Died of Wounds on 22 September 1916 and buried in Foncquevillers Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on the New Cumnock War Memorial and on the G&SW Railway Company memorial now in Ayr Station.

Alexander Rogerson – age 19 – Private (S/6415) 2nd Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
Alexander was employed by the New Cumnock Collieries when he enlisted in 1914. He landed with the 8th Black Watch at Boulogne in March 1915 and was wounded at Loos in September 1915. After he recovered he was posted to 2nd Black Watch in Mesopotamia in March 1916 but was killed in the following month.
Born 1897 in Durisdeer as Alexander Twynholm Rogerson. Son of Robert and Lilly (Twynholm) Rogerson of Drumshinnoch, Carronbridge, Durisdeer and of Southampton House, New Cumnock, Ayrshire.
Killed in Action on 22 April 1916 and buried in Amara War Cemetery, Iraq.
Also named on the New Cumnock War Memorial.


PTE. JAMES SHAW, K.O.S.B. (JAMES A. J. SHAW, K.O.S.B.)
James Alexander Johnstone Shaw – age 24 – Private (16857) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James enlisted in November 1914 and joined the 1st KOSB at Gallipoli in May 1915. He was wounded in June and later contracted dysentery and was evacuated home. He was posted to the 7th/8th KOSB in France in March 1916 and after two periods in hospital, during which he also served with the 2nd KOSB, he joined the 1/5th KOSB in France after they had arrived from Palestine. James was killed in the battalion's last action of the war at Tieghem. He was re-interred at Harlebeke in June 1920.
Born 1894 in St. Mungo, Dumfriesshire. Son of Benjamin and Jane (Carruthers) Shaw of Path Head, St. Mungo, of Westerhall East Lodge, Westerkirk, Dumfriesshire and of Drumlanrig Bridge, Durisdeer.
Killed in Action on 31 October 1918 and buried in Harlebeke New British Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Lockerbie War Memorial and (possibly) on the Eskdalemuir War Memorial.

PTE. JACOB SCOTT, HLD. LT. INFANTRY. (JACOB SCOTT, H.L.I.)
Jacob Scott – age 39 – Private (39219) 14th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
Jacob was a stone mason. He was captured in late March 1918 and sent a postcard to his wife in April to say that he was a prisoner of war. He died in the Military Hospital in Julich, to the west of Cologne, and was buried there but was re-interred in Cologne after the war.
Born 1879 in Kirkpatrick Fleming, Dumfriesshire. Son of the late Elizabeth (Given) Scott and of John Scott. Husband of Agnes (Dunkeld) Scott of High Farthingbank, Durisdeer and of 13 Victoria Park, Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire who he married in 1910 in Ruthwell, Dumfriesshire.
Died on Service on 13 October 1918 and buried in Cologne Southern Cemetery, Germany.
Also named on the Durisdeer Parish Church Roll of Honour, on the Hutton & Corrie Parish War Memorial and on the Lockerbie War Memorial.


PTE. JAMES THORBURN, K.O.S.B. (JAMES G. THORBURN, K.O.S.B.)
James Thorburn – age 21 – Private (240147) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was employed in the forestry department of the Drumlanrig Estate and served, with his brother John, in the Territorial 5th KOSB. They were mobilised in August 1914 but James as Private (1169) did not join the battalion until 1916 in Egypt. He was killed in Palestine, near Jerusalem.
Born 1896 in Durisdeer as James Graham Thorburn. Son of the late Christopher Thorburn and of Susan (Graham) Thorburn of Carronbridge, Durisdeer.
Killed in Action on 28 November 1917 and buried in Ramleh War Cemetery, Israel.


PTE. ADAM WAUGH, HLD. LT. INFANTRY. (ADAM L. WAUGH, H.L.I.)
Adam Waugh – age 22 – Private (30506) 17th Battalion (3rd Glasgow), Highland Light Infantry.
Adam was reported missing in November 1916 but his remains were recovered from the battlefield after the war and he was re-interred at Serre-les-Puisieux.
Born 1894 in Durisdeer as Adam Lockhart Waugh. Son of John and Jane Reid (Lockhart) Waugh of Enoch, Durrisdeer.
Killed in Action on 18 November 1916 and buried in Serre Road Cemetery No.1, France.
Also named on the Durisdeer Parish Church Roll of Honour.


PTE. JAS. WILLIAMSON, NEW FOUNDRS. (JAMES WILLIAMSON, N.F.)
James Williamson – age 24 – Private (23/1586) 1/7th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers.
In 1901 James, aged 7, was living with his grandmother Helen Williamson in Glencairn but by 1911 he was with his uncle and aunt at Farthingbank in Durisdeer. He enlisted in the 23rd Northumberland Fusiliers (the 4th Tyneside Scottish Battalion) in Newcastle and served in the 8th and 26th Battalions before he joined the 1/7th Battalion.
Born 1893 at Birkshaw, Glencairn, Dumfriesshire. Son of Janet Williamson.
Nephew of Thomas and Agnes Williamson of Farthingbank, Durisdeer.
Missing in Action on 31 December 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.

1939 - 1945

LDG. TEL. THOMAS T. BLANE, R.N. (THOMAS T. BLANE, R.N.)
Thomas Tonar Blane – age 20 – Leading Telegraphist (P/JX 159608) H.M. Submarine Thunderbolt, Royal Navy.
The “Thunderbolt” was a T-class submarine originally called HMS Thetis. The “Thetis” sank in Liverpool Bay during her sea trials on 1 June 1939. The boat was raised, repaired, and commissioned in 1940 as HMS Thunderbolt. She is believed to have been sunk by the Italian corvette “Cicogna” on 14 March 1943, off the coast of Capo San Vito, Sicily, Italy. It is not certain that Thunderbolt was lost in that attack as her wreck has never been found. She was reported overdue on 28 March.
Born 1922 in Ayr. Son of George and Jane (Tonar) Blane of Carronbridge, Durisdeer.
Missing in Action/Lost at Sea on 28 March 1943 and named on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire.
Also named on the Durisdeer Parish Church Roll of Honour.


SGT. ROBERT BONE, R.A.F. (ROBERT BONE, R.A.F.)
Robert Bone – age 31 – Sergeant/Untrained Pilot (974165) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Robert was a butcher in Thornhill when he enlisted in December 1939. He served in the catering and butchers' department of the RAF until he volunteered to be a pilot. He went to the 24 Air School at RAF Nigel in South Africa in 1944. 24 AS provided advanced training for cadet pilots and it was there that they would qualify and receive their 'wings'. Robert was killed in a flying accident.
Born 1915 in Colmonell, Ayrshire. Son of Thomas and Janet (Sharp) Bone of High Fardingbank, Durisdeer. Husband of Phyllis (Haining) Bone of 50 Kinnell Street, Thornhill, Dumfriesshire who he married in 1940 in Thornhill. Died on Service on 12 January 1945 and buried in Nigel New Cemetery, Gauteng, near Johannesburg, South Africa.
Also named on the Durisdeer Parish Church Roll of Honour and on the Morton Parish War Memorial in Thornhill.


PTE. ROBERT COOK, 5th CAM. HRS. (ROBERT COOK, 5th CAM. HRS.)
Robert Cook – age 27 – Private (14709339) 5th Battalion, Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders.
The 5th Camerons landed at Normandy on 7 June 1944 as part of the 51st (Highland) Division. Robert was killed south of Nijmegen during the advance into Germany (Operation Veritable)
Born 1917 in Durisdeer. Son of John and Elizabeth Galt McKeller (McMurray) Cook of Broomrigg, Durisdeer.
Killed in Action on 17 February 1945 and buried in Mook War Cemetery, Netherlands.
Also named on the Durisdeer Parish Church Roll of Honour and on the Morton Parish War Memorial in Thornhill.

PTE. CHRISTINA RANKIN, A.T.S. (CHRISTINA RANKIN, A.T.S.)
Christina Black Rankin – age 28 – Private (W/96323) Auxiliary Territorial Service.
Christina was a hairdresser. She had been suffering with thymoma metastasis for some time and died in the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.
Born 1919 in Durisdeer. Daughter of the late John Smith Rankin and of Jane (Maxwell) Rankin of Waulkmill, Carronbridge, Durisdeer.
Died on Service on 9 April 1947 and buried in Morton (Thornhill) Cemetery, Dumfriesshire.
Also named on the Durisdeer Parish Church Roll of Honour.


F/SGT. ADAM TELFER, R.A.F. (ADAM TELFER, R.A.F.)
Adam Telfer – age 22 – Sergeant/Flight Engineer (1371009) 49 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Adam's Lancaster bomber had taken off from RAF Fiskerton in Lincolnshire for a raid on Stettin (now Szczecin, Poland) but was hit by anti-aircraft fire and crash landed near Stadil on the Danish west coast. Four of the crew were killed.
Born 1920 in Durisdeer. Son of Alexander and Janet (Findlater) Telfer of Durisdeer.
Killed in Action on 21 April 1943 and buried in Lemvig Cemetery, Denmark.
Also named on the Durisdeer Parish Church Roll of Honour.


LT. CDR. WILLIAM THOMSON, R.N. (WILLIAM THOMSON, R.N.)
William Thomson – age 29 – Lieut-Commander, H.M.S. Willamette Valley, Royal Naval Reserve.
William was educated at the Wallace Hall Academy in Thornhill and at the Royal Technical College in Glasgow (now Strathclyde University). He was a ship's captain in the Merchant Navy and was commissioned in the Royal Naval Reserve.
The motor merchantman “Willamette Valley” was requisitioned by the Royal Navy in September 1939 and converted to a Q-ship, fitted with Asdic and a concealed armament of nine 4inch guns, one 12pounder gun, four machine guns, four 21inch torpedo tubes and 100 depth charges. She was commissioned in January 1940 as special service vessel (SSV) HMS Willamette Valley with the cover name “Edgehill”, in service as Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) vessel. While disguised as the “Edgehill”, she was torpedoed and sunk in the Western Approaches by the German submarine U-51.
Born 1911 in Durisdeer. John and Margaret (Muir) Thomson of Durisdeer.
Killed in Action/Lost at sea on 29 June 1940 and named on the Liverpool Naval Memorial, Lancashire.
Also named on the Durisdeer Parish Church Roll of Honour.


PTE. JOHN WOOD, R.A.M.C. (JOHN WOOD, R.A.M.C.)
Not listed by CWGC/SNWM – Possibly:
John Wood – age 27 – Royal Army Medical Corps.
John was a gamekeeper, living at Auchensell, Durisdeer, when he died of tuberculosis in the Dumfries and Galloway Sanatorium at Lochmaben, Dumfriesshire.
Born 1919 in Castleton, Roxburghshire. Son of George and Marion (Campbell) Wood of Auchensell, Durisdeer. (His parents had married in 1917 in Castleton)
Died on 17 June 1947 and buried in Durisdeer Cemetery.
Also named on the Durisdeer Parish Church Roll of Honour.
