Perhaps my least favourite memorial in the Borders, this stone pimple with its curiously carved lion was designed by J. S. Rhind.

William H Gillis who appears on this memorial is also recorded on the Kelso War Memorial and St.Cuthbert's church in Hawick, where he was born.
His father was headteacher at Kelso school and an ex head of St.Cuthberts school, Hawick.
William was Hawick High Dux medallist of 1913 and he enlisted after his final exam in 1915.

PRIVATE JAMES BROWN, CANADIANS.
James Brown – age 34 – Private (467042) 13th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
James had served his apprenticeship in Sprouston and was a carpenter in Calgary, Alberta when he enlisted in July 1915. He sailed from Montreal in September 1915 and landed in France in January 1916. He joined his battalion in February but was killed two months later.
Born 1882 in Sprouston. Son of the late Agnes (Tait) Brown (died 1905 in Sprouston) and of Walter Brown of Morebattle, Roxburghshire.
Killed in Action on 1 April 1916 and buried in Railway Dugouts Burial Ground (Transport Farm) Belgium.
Also named on the Kelso War Memorial.


PRIVATE JOHN BRUNTON, R.W. SURREYS.
John Brunton – age 23 – Private (T/207303) 2nd Battalion, The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment)
John enlisted as Private (270604) in the Hertfordshire Regiment. He was posted as Private (15769) to the 8th Battalion of the Somerset Light Infantry and landed with them at Le Havre in September 1915 before being transferred to The Queen's. His remains were recovered from the battlefield and were re-interred at Buttes in March 1920.
Born 1894 at Longnewton in Ancrum, Roxburghshire. Son of Mark and Isabella (Wood) Brunton of Easter Softlaw, Sprouston and of Bridgeheugh, Selkirk.
Killed in Action on 4 October 1917 and buried in Buttes New British Cemetery, Polygon Wood, Belgium.
Also named on the Kelso War Memorial.


PRIVATE THOMAS DICKSON, CAMn. H.
Thomas Dickson – age 21 – Private (41028) 5th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Thomas enlisted as Private (4865) in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and was posted as Private (302303) to the 1/8th Battalion in France before transferring to the 5th Camerons. He was reported to be a prisoner of war in July 1918 but he died in the Field Hospital at Bucy-les-Cerny and he was buried in the German Cemetery at Morieulois near St. Quentin. Thomas was re-interred at Vendresse in February 1925.
Born 1897 in Jedburgh, Roxburghshire. Son of John and Margaret (Wood) Dickson of Kerchesters, Sprouston.
Died of Wounds on 13 July 1918 and buried in Vendresse British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Kelso War Memorial.

PRIVATE ALEXANDER FAIR, K.O.S.B.
Alexander Fair – age 19 – Private (623) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Alexander was mobilised in August 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle of Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1896 in Kelso, Roxburghshire. Son of Peter and Isabella (Richardson) Fair of Victoria Cottages, Sprouston.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Kelso War Memorial.


SERGEANT THOMAS GALBRAITH, CANADIANS.
Thomas Galbraith, Military Medal – age 29 – Company Sergeant Major (59348) 21st Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
Thomas was employed as a groom when he enlisted at Kingston. Ontario in March 1915. He sailed with his battalion from Montreal in May 1915 and they landed in France in September. Thomas was promoted to Corporal in April 1916 and to Sergeant in September. He was wounded January 1917 and treated in the 11th General Hospital in Camiers. He then spent some time at the Canadian Base where he suffered a badly broken leg in an accident and he was admitted to the 8th Stationary Hospital in Wimereux before being evacuated to the Military Hospital in Dundee in May 1917. He had been awarded a M.M. for bravery in the field. Thomas was able to rejoin his battalion in July 1918 but he was killed a month later.
Born 1889 in Sprouston. Son of the late Jane (Liddell) Galbraith (died 1912) and of Thomas Galbraith of Graden Farm, Yetholm and of Holefield Farm, Sprouston.
Killed in Action on 27 August 1918 and buried in Tigris Lane Cemetery, Wancourt, France.
Also named on the Kelso War Memorial.


SERGEANT WILLIAM H. GILLIS, A.&S.H.
William Hartley Gillis – age 20 – Lance Sergeant (276851) 14th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
William was educated at Hawick Higher Grade School where he was dux in 1913.
Born 1897 in Hawick, Roxburghshire. Son of David Gillis, formerly headmaster at St. Cuthbert's School in Hawick, and at Lampitlaw, Sprouston, and of Harriet (Hartley) Gillis.
Missing in Action on 27 March 1918 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Kelso War Memorial.

William Halliday – age 23 – Private (201538) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was a ploughman at Lurdenlaw Farm, Sprouston, where his father was the farm steward. He enlisted as Private (8646) in the 1/4th KOSB. He was wounded in May 1917 and transferred to the 6th KOSB.
Born 1895 in Sprouston. Son of William and Agnes (Keddie) Halliday of Lurdenlaw, Sprouston.
Killed in Action on 30 September 1918 and buried in Dadizeele New British Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Kelso War Memorial.


PRIVATE ALEXANDER HENDRY, SCOTS GDS.
Note: all records spell the family name as Henry.
Alexander Henry – age 26 – Private (11671) 2nd Battalion, Scots Guards
Alexander joined his battalion in France in April 1915 but he was killed a month later at Festubert.
Born 1889 Greenlaw, Berwickshire. Son of William Henry, farm steward at Lurdenlaw, Sprouston and at Redden, and of Janet (Richardson) Henry. Husband of Isabella (Morton) Henry of Swinton Hill, Berwickshire who he married in 1907 in Sprouston.
Missing in Action on 18 May 1915 and named on the Le Touret Memorial, France.
Also named on the Kelso War Memorial.


PRIVATE ALEXANDER McCRAW, K.O.S.B.
Alexander McCraw – age 20 – Private (66102) 141st Company, Machine Gun Corps.
Alexander was a ploughman at Redden Farm, Ednam, Roxburghshire when he enlisted as Private (25625) in the King's Own Scottish Borderers. He was posted to the MGC in France.
Born 1897 in Greenlaw, Berwickshire. Son of Robert and Margaret (Slater) McCraw of Redden Cottage, Ednam and of Kersheugh, Jedburgh, Roxburghshire.
Missing in Action on 30 November 1917 and named on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval, France.
Also named on the Kelso War Memorial together with his brother William McCraw, Private (206111) "C" Battalion, Tank Corps who died on 31 July 1917 and who is named on the Ednam Parish War Memorial.

James McCraw – age 27 – Corporal (S/3828) 7th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
James was an assistant gamekeeper in Sprouston when he enlisted in Kelso. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in May 1915 but he was killed four months later during the battle of Loos.
Born c.1888 in Fogo Berwickshire. (Source: SDGW but I cannot trace)
Son of Hugh McCraw. (Source: Army registers of Soldiers effects)
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Kelso War Memorial.


PRIVATE JAMES PATTERSON, K.O.S.B.
James Patterson – age 33 – Private (7353) 2/5th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was a journeyman slater when he enlisted in November 1914. He was discharged from the army in August 1916 due to illness and he was awarded a Silver War Badge (489706). James died of tuberculosis two months later in the family home in Sprouston.
Born 1883 in Sprouston. Son of William and Agnes (Ross) Patterson of Sprouston.
Died on 3 October 1916 and buried in Sprouston Parish Churchyard.
Also named on the Kelso War Memorial.


SERGEANT JOHN H. PATTERSON, GORn. H.
John Huggan Patterson – age 22 – Sergeant (S/2132) 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
John was a plate-layer on the railway when he enlisted in the Gordons as a regular in August 1914. He transferred to the 8th Battalion at Bordon Camp in Hampshire and landed with them at Boulogne in May 1915. He was wounded twice. John was a Sergeant in the 3rd (Reserve) Battalion based at Victoria Road School, Torry, Aberdeen when he married in December 1916.
Born 1895 Bunkle and Preston Parish, Berwickshire. John Huggan Patterson and Christina (Elliott) Patterson of Windywalls Farm, Sprouston. Husband of Bathia Jane Sinclair (Gray) Patterson of 88 Victoria Road, Torry, Aberdeen who he married in 1916 in St Machar, Aberdeen.
Missing in Action on 17 June 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Kelso War Memorial and on the Aberdeen Roll of Honour.

PRIVATE ANDREW TINLIN, K.O.S.B.
Andrew Elliot Tinlin – age 21 – Private (11808) 7th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Andrew enlisted at the outbreak of war and joined the 2nd KOSB in France in September 1914 during the retreat from Mons. He was wounded at the Aisne and then joined the 7th KOSB who had arrived at Boulogne in July 1915.
Born 1895 in Sprouston. Son of Robert and Elizabeth Jane (Alcorn) Tinlin of Toll House, Sprouston.
Missing in Action on 24 February 1916 and named on the Loos Memorial, Farnce.
Also named on the Kelso War Memorial.


PRIVATE JAMES WRIGHT, K.O.S.B.
James Wright – age 26 – Private (6833) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James, like his father, was a fishing tackle maker and was a player with the Kelso Rugby club when he enlisted in September 1914. He had previously served for 5 years with the Territorial 4th KOSB. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June but was he was wounded a month later during the battle of Achi Baba Nullah. James was evacuated to the 21st General Hospital in Alexandria where he died a week later.
Born 1889 in Kelso, Roxburghshire. Son of George and Margaret (Currie) Wright, of Tweedside, Sprouston.
Died of Wounds on 26 July 1915 and buried in Alexandria (Chatby) Military And War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
Also named on the Kelso War Memorial.
