Placed at the rear of the kirk, this plaque says -

Remember the men of this church who fell in the Great War, 1914-1918.

Given there are 39 casualties on Ayton's Roll of Honour and the memorial communion table (and 42 on the civil memorial), but 16 casualities on this plaque... I would speculate this could well be from the United Free Church ('Summerhill' - later Ayton West Church of Scotland).

That would adhere to the sort of proportions found elsewhere in the county. I'll do some digging and see if I can turn-up anything to clarify this possibility.

Found these articles which confirm it was the UF congregation memorial.

Unveiled by the famous Principal Cairns, a native of Ayton parish.


The Scotsman, 7th August 1923

AYTON - Principal DS Cairns DD, Moderator of the United Free Church, unveiled on Sunday evening a memorial tablet which has been erected in the vestibule of Ayton United Free Church - of which he was formerly minister - to the memory of the 16 men belonging to the congregation who fell in the war. UF CHURCH MODERATOR IN BERWICKSHIRE - ... in the evening, after preaching at the thanksgiving service, he unveiled a beautiful war memorial tablet in the prescence of a large company.
