PRIVATE ROBERT BRYSON
CAMERON HIGHLANDERS. FRANCE 1915
.
Robert Bryson – age 22 – Private (17720) 1st Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Robert came to study farming at West Morriston in Legerwood and, with his brother George, he took a joint tenancy of Corsbie Farm, Legerwood in May 1913. He enlisted in March 1915 and joined his battalion in France in June but he died three months later in the 10th Stationary Hospital in St. Omer.
Born 1892 in Edinburgh. Son of Robert and Mary (Grant) Bryson of 15 Salisbury Road, Edinburgh.
Died of Wounds on 5 October 1915 and buried in Longuenesse (St. Omer) Souvenir Cemetery, France.

His brother George served as Corporal (1152) with the Lothians and Borders Horse Yeomanry and was commissioned in the Cameron Highlanders in June 1918 and was awarded a Military Cross.
T./2nd Lt. George Bryson, 1st Bn., Cam.Hrs.
For conspicuous gallantry near Berthancourt, 18th September, 1918, in command of his platoon. Under heavy machine-gun fire he charged and knocked out a machine gun which was holding up the advance and captured the gun crew, thus enabling his men to reach the second objective.

Another brother, James Graham Bryson, served as Private (945) with the Lothians and Borders Horse Yeomanry and was commissioned in the Royal Scots in March 1917. He was also awarded a Military Cross.

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. After the objective had been reached, noticing the enemy counter-attacking, he immediately returned and led forward a party under heavy fire and dispersed the enemy. His fine example and disregard of danger was largely instrumental in the success of the operations.


PRIVATE JOSEPH COLTHERD
2nd SEAFORTH HIGHLANDERS. FRANCE 1915
.
Joseph Coltherd – age 23 – Private (S/5751) 7th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
Joseph enlisted at Lauder in Berwickshire and he landed with his battalion at Boulogne in May 1915 but he was killed four months later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1891 in Innerwick, Haddington, East Lothian. Son of the late John Coltherd (died 1910) and Janet (Stewart) Coltherd of Aikengall, Oldhamstocks, East Lothian.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Oldhamstocks Parish War Memorial in East Lothian.


2nd LIEUT. ROBERT LOGAN
KING'S OWN SCOT BORDers. FRANCE 1918
.
Robert Logan – age 25 – Second Lieutenant, 4th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert, as Corporal (1254) in the Lothians and Border Horse Yeomanry, landed with his squadron in France in September 1915 and served with the Regiment as Corporal (120106) until he was commissioned in the KOSB in April 1917.
Born 1893 in Legerwood as Abram Robert Logan. Son of James and Mary (Dickinson) Logan of Birkhill, Legerwood.
Killed in Action on 20 October 1918 and buried in Caudry British Cemetery, France.
Also named on an individual memorial in Legerwood Church.


PRIVATE JAMES THOMSON
CAMERON HIGHLANDERS. FRANCE 1915.

James Thomson – age 23 – Private (S/14461) 1st Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
James had been employed for some years on the farm of Corsbie in Legerwood but was at Edge Head Dairy in Dalkeith Road in Edinburgh when he enlisted. He joined his battalion in France in February 1915 but he was killed three months later.
Born 1891 in Minto, Roxburghshire. Son of Adam and Helen (Smith) Thomson of Greenknowe, Gordon, Berwickshire and of Howden, Selkirk.
Missing in Action on 9 May 1915 and named on the Le Touret Memorial, France.


PRIVATE GEORGE TODD
2/4th KING'S OWN SCOT BORDers. FRANCE 1917.

George Todd – age 38 – Private (23777) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
George was an estate worker at West Morriston, Legerwood when he enlisted.
Born 1880 in Edrom, Berwickshire. Son of the late Mary (Crombie) Todd (died 1889) and of Peter Todd of Lambden, Greenlaw, Berwickshire. Husband of Janet (Scott) Todd of Earlston and of 30 Bank Street, Cambuslang, Glasgow who he married in 1906 in Eccles, Berwickshire.
Missing in Action on 4 October 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Earlston Parish War Memorial and on the Earlston Parish Church memorial.


PRIVATE DAVID WILKIE
10th ARGYLL & SUTHERLAND Hrs. FRANCE 1915.

David Wilkie – age 22 – Private (11324) 10th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
David was a ploughman on West Morriston Farm, Legerwood when he enlisted in the Royal Scots Greys in February 1915. He was posted to the 10th Argylls in France in early October 1915 but was fatally wounded less than two months later.
Born 1893 in Edgerston, Roxburghshire as David Ewart Wilkie. Son of Thomas and Mary (Carrie) Wilkie of West Morriston Farm and of Kedstie, Earlston, Berwickshire.
Died of Wounds on 22 November 1915 and buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, France.

As a post-script, looking at the text at the head of the plaque, I suspect that this is the Legerwood Parish War Memorial.
