L-CPL. ANDREW STITT, SEAFORTHS.
Andrew Stitt – age 23 – Lance Corporal (S/7087) 2nd Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
Andrew was educated at Sanquhar Public School and served his apprenticeship with a Flesher and Ham Curer in Sanquhar. He had been employed there for nine years when he enlisted in January 1915 together with a group of friends. Three of the group, John Hiddleston (7089), Hugh Hume (7086) and Jimmy Stoddart (7085) are listed here. He joined his battalion in France in March 1915. Andrew was wounded on 1 July 1916, the first day of the battle of the Somme, and was evacuated to the Alexandra Hospital at Cosham, Fareham in Hampshire but he died there two weeks later.
Born 1893 in Sanquhar. Son of James and Elizabeth (Thomson) Stitt of 118 High Stret, Sanquhar.
Died of Wounds on 14 July 1916 and buried in Sanquhar Parish Churchyard Extension.
Also named on the Sanquhar School memorial.

John Stitt – age 23 – Private (12248) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was educated at Sanquhar Public School and was a miner at Gateside Colliery, Kirkconnel when he enlisted in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in May 1915 but was killed four months later during the battle of Loos.
Born December 1890 in Sanquhar as John Thomson Stitt. Son of James and Elizabeth (Thomson) Stitt of 118 High Street, Sanquhar.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Sanquhar School memorial.


L-CPL. JAMES STODDART, SEAFORTHS.
James Stoddart – age 26 – Lance Corporal (S/7085) 2nd Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
James was educated at Sanquhar Public School and was a well known local footballer who played at right-back for Nithsdale Wanderers. He was a miner when he enlisted in January 1915 together with a group of friends. Three of the group, John Hiddleston (7089), Hugh Hume (7086) and Andrew Stitt (7087) are listed here. He joined his battalion in France in March 1915 and was wounded and evacuated to hospital in Boulgne in May but was able to rejoin his battalion.
Born 1892 in Kirkconnel, Dumfriesshire as James Wilson Stoddart. Son of George and Jane (Reid) Stoddart of "Ivy Neuk," Sanquhar.
Killed in Action on 11 April 1917 and buried in Brown's Copse Cemetery, Roeux, France.
Also named on the Sanquhar School memorial.

PTE. JAMES B. THOMSON, CANADIANS.
James Brown Thomson – age 28 – Private (443124) 54th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
James was educated at Sanquhar Public School and had been in Canada for about eight years, farming in the Notch Hill area of British Columbia. He was a member of the local militia, the Rocky Mountain Rangers, when he enlisted in the 54th (Kootenay) Battalion at Vernon Camp near Kamloops in October 1915. The battalion sailed from Canada in November and they continued their training in England until August 1916 when they landed in France.
Born 1888 in Annan, Dumfriesshire. Son of John and Mary (Brown) Thomson of 27 High Street, Sanquhar.
Killed in Action on 1 March 1917 and buried in Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery, Souchez, France.
Also named on the Sanquhar School memorial, on the St. Ninian's Church memorial in Sanquhar and on the Kamloops Cenotaph in British Columbia.

Samuel Thomson – age 26 – Private (S/7247) 9th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
Samuel was working at Gateside Colliery when he enlisted in 1914. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in May 1915.
Born 1891 in Sorn, Ayrshire. Son of the late Ellen or Helen (Guffie) Thomson and of William Thomson. Husband of Barbara (Marshall) Thomson of Windyedge, Crawick Mill, Sanquhar who he married in 1909 in Catrine, Ayrshire. (from 1918 Mrs. John Cunningham McKechnie)
Killed in Action on 12 July 1916 and buried in Carnoy Military Cemetery, Somme, France.


LIEUT. WILLIAM THOMSON, AUSTRALIANS (R.N.)
Not listed by CWGC.
William is believed to have been serving as an officer on a British Transport ship when he was killed as the result of an explosion. He had enlisted as William James Thomson, Private (554) in the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force in Sydney, New South Wales in July 1915 and he was posted to Rabaul in German New Guinea but he was discharged two months later. No reason is given. He was an engineer and gave his address as c/o the Queen's Hotel Crown Street, Sydney, NSW. He named his father J. Thomson of Newark, Sanquhar as his next of kin.
William was brought up on Castle Farm and on Newark Farm in Sanquhar and in 1911, aged 24, he was assisting his father in the running of Newark Farm.
Born 1887 in Kirkpatrick Durham, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of James and Mary (Ramsay) Thomson of Newark Farm, Sanquhar.
Died on 18 March 1917. Burial place not known.

PTE. HERMAN TOFERN, K.O.S.B.
Herman Tofern – age 25 – Private (1846) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Herman was a miner at Gateside Colliery, Kirkconnel when he enlisted in September 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was killed during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1890 in Bethnal Green, London as Herman Julius Tofern. Son of the late Julius Tofern and of Sarah (Meggat) Tofern of Gosport Road, Walthamstow, Essex who had married in 1884 in Kensington.
His late father Julius was a hairdresser who had been born in Hanover, Germany.
In 1901 Herman and his siblings were living in Pathhead, New Cumnock, Ayrshire with members of the Meggat family.
Brother of Robert Tofern of Queensbury Square and of Mrs Margaret (Tofern) Gibson of Buccleuch Road, both in Sanquhar.
Missing in Action on 11 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the New Cumnock War Memorial.


CAPTAIN MAXWELL TURNBULL, BORDER REG.
Maxwell Turnbull, Military Cross – age 27 – Captain, 3rd Battalion attached to the 8th Battalion, Border Regiment.
Maxwell was educated at the Mennock Village School and at the Sanquhar Public School before serving his apprenticeship in the British Linen Bank branch in Sanquhar. He then took up an appointment in Jamaica but he returned on the outbreak of war and joined the 28th London Regiment (Artists' Rifles) as Lance Corporal (7361). He was commissioned in the Border Regiment in September 1916 and joined the 6th Battalion in France in October. He was wounded in December 1916 and promoted to Adjutant and Captain in August 1917. He was awarded an M.C. as T./Lt. (A./Capt.) Maxwell Turnbull, Bord. R. in the King's birthday honours in May 1918. Maxwell died of pneumonia in the 20th General Hospital in Camiers.
Born 1891 in Sanquhar. Son of David and Isabella (Beattie) Turnbull, of Eliock Sawmill, Sanquhar.
Died on Active Service on 18 October 1918 and buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Mennock School and Sanquhar School memorials and on the St. Ninian's Church memorial in Sanquhar.

PTE. EDWARD WATSON, M.R.F.C.
Edward Watson – age 41 – Air Mechanic 2nd Class (119615) Reserve Depot, Royal Flying Corps.
Edward was educated at Sanquhar Public School and served his apprenticeship at a tailor in Sanquhar. He was a member of the local Volunteers and of the Sanquhar Brass Band but by 1911 he and his wife and young son Tom were living in 14 Clarendon Place in Preston, Lancashire where he became a Sergeant in the Territorials. He joined the Royal Flying Corps just ten days before his death in the Cambridge Military Hospital in Aldershot, Farnham, Hampshire.
Born 1876 in Sanquhar. Son of the late James and Jessie or Janet (Penman) Watson of Buccleuch Road, Sanquhar. Husband of Jessie (Cunningham) Watson who he married in 1901 in Sanquhar.
Died on Service on 27 January 1918 and buried in Sanquhar Parish Churchyard Extension (CWG)
Also named on the Sanquhar School memorial as RAF.

Andrew was educated at Sanquhar Public School and had been a grocer in Sanquhar for nine years when he enlisted in September 1914. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915 but was killed two months later during the battle of Loos.

PTE. ROBERT WYLIE, K.O.S.B.
Robert Wylie – age 24 – Private (20361) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert was educated at Sanquhar Public School and was a moulder at the Buccleuch Brickworks when he enlisted. He joined the 1st KOSB in Gallipoli in October 1915 but contracted dysentery and enteric fever and was evacuated to the Merryflats War Hospital in Govan in January 1916. When he recovered he joined the Lewis Gun Section of the 6th KOSB in France.
Born c.1893 in Hawick, Roxburghshire. Son of Robert and Grace (Little) Wylie of 21Queensberry Square, Sanquhar who married in 1897 in Bellingham, Northumberland. Brother of Isa Wylie of 21A, Queensbury Square, Sanquhar who was born in Wilton, Roxburghshire in 1898.
Missing in Action on 3 May 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.

Two men buried in Commonwealth War Graves in Sanquhar but not named on the War Memorial.

CRICHTON, J. Private (768) 5th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was a miner and was living with his family at Crawick Mill, Sanquhar when he enlisted in the Territorial 5th KOSB in February 1911. He was living with the Dunlop family at Raefield, Sanquhar when he was mobilised in August 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in early June 1915 but within a couple of weeks he contracted dysentery and was treated in the 11th Casualty Clearing Station. He became ill again in August and was evacuated to the 3rd Canadian Stationary Hospital at Mudros before being evacuated to Malta and then to the UK in October. He was discharged from the army on 27 February 1916 as his service time had expired.
Born 1894 in Crawick Mill, Sanquhar. Son of the late John Crichton (died 1909) and of Mary (Lettimer) Crichton.
Died on 9 November 1920 and buried in Sanquhar Parish Churchyard Extension. (CWG)


JAMES KELLY – age 48 – Private (7274) 5th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)

SENTRY KILLED THE RAILWAY.
When Mr Wm. Chisholm, permament way inspector, was proceeding down line to Sanquhar Station yesterday morning at six o'clock he found the body of a man lying on the permanent way. It was terribly mutilated. The police were once apprised of the occurrence, and the body was conveyed to Sanquhar Station, where it was identified as that of James Kelly, about 50 years, one the National Reservists engaged in guarding Crawick Viaduct. It is supposed that the man had walked on to the railway on Monday evening and had been struck by the train which reaches Sanquhar at 6.13. The body had been dragged a considerable distance, and was discovered 220 yards south of the viaduct, and 130 yards beyond the block house. Deceased was a married man, and his wife resides in Glasgow. He held a South African medal and several clasps, being a reservist of 5th Scottish Rifles.
Named on the Glasgow Roll of Honour as of 11 Tennant Street, Townhead, Glasgow. (Thanks John!)

THE SECOND WORLD WAR 1939 - 1945.

L/BDR. JOSEPH BLACK, LANARKSHIRE YEOMANRY.
Joseph Black – age 33 – Lance Bombardier (322402) 155 (The Lanarkshire Yeomanry) Field Regiment, Royal Artillery.
Joseph was educated at Sanquhar Public School and had enlisted in the Yeomanry before the war. In March 1941, the 155th sailed from the River Clyde bound for India in preparation for a spell in the North African Desert. However in August they were sent to Malaya when the Japanese invaded the Malayan Peninsula with landings at Kota Bahru and an attack through neutral Siam. The 155th were thereafter continually in action until the fall of Singapore on 15th February 1942.
Joseph was amongst 250 men transported on the "England Maru" in 1942 to Tiawan to work in the Kinaseki Copper Mine. He was buried in the cemetery there and was re-interred at Sai Wan in July 1947.
Born 1910 in Morton, Dumfriesshire. Son of David Hastie Black and Janet or Jessie (Dunlop) Black of St Mary Street, Sanquhar.
Died on Service on 11 March 1943 and buried in Sai Wan Cemetery, Hong Kong, China.
Also named on the Sanquhar School memorial.


PTE. JOHN EADIE, A.&S,H.
John Eadie – age 18 – Private (14748453) 7th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Jack was educated at Sanquhar Public School and had been employed on farm work before he enlisted. He had been with his battalion for just three months when he was killed near Kessel in Germany. He was re-interred at Rheinberg in July 1946.
Born 1926 in Sanquhar. Son of James Steele Eadie and of Jessie Hyslop Hoatson Cotts (Hughes) Eadie of 108 High Street, Sanquhar who married in 1925 in Glasgow.
Killed in Action on 27 February 1945 and buried in Rheinberg War Cemetery, Germany.
Also named on the Sanquhar School memorial.


SGT. DOUGLAS T. FORREST, R.A.F.
Douglas Thomas Forrest – age 19 – Sergeant/Air Gunner (1826053) 622 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Douglas was educated at Sanquhar Public School and was employed in a local colliery when he enlisted in December 1943. His Lancaster bomber had taken off from RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk for a raid on Frankfurt but collided with another aircraft and both crashed at Stattmalten, north of Strasburg.
Born 1925 in Sanquhar. Son of Robert and ???? Forrest of 46 Renwick Place, Sanquhar. Husband of Annie Deans (King) Forrest of Kirkconnel, Dumfriesshire who he married in 1944 in Kirkconnel.
Killed in Action on 12 September 1944 and buried in Sessenheim Communal Cemetery, Bas-Rhin, Alsace, France.
Also named on the Sanquhar School memorial and on the St. Ninian's Church memorial.

PTE. Wm. HIDDLESTON, GORDONS.
William Hiddleston – age 19 – Private (14774225) 2nd Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
William was educated at Sanquhar Public School and was employed with a butcher in Thornhill, Dumfriesshire when he enlisted in June 1944. He was a member of the Sanquhar Home Guard. On 29 April, the 15th (Scottish) Division made one last assault crossing with Buffaloes, stormboats and Sherman DD tanks, to get over the Elbe. With overwhelming artillery and tactical air support, opposition was limited but William was killed at Lauenberg. Three days later negotiations began for the surrender of all German forces in North Germany. William was re-interred in Hamburg in August 1946.
Born 1926 in Sanquhar. Son of Sam and Jenny Hiddleston of Euchan Bridge, Sanquhar.
Killed in Action on 29 April 1945 and buried in Hamburg Cemetery, Germany,

SGT. MATTHEW HOGARTH, R.A.F.
Matthew Hogarth – age 21 – Sergeant (1006421) 70 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Matthew was educated at Sanquhar Public School and was employed in the headquarters of Dumfries Police when he enlisted. In 1941 70 Squadron were based at RAF Kabrit in Egypt flying Wellington bombers in the North African campaign. Matthew's aircraft crashed, returning from a raid on Benina in Lybia, when an engine cut out on landing.
Born 1920 in Sanquhar. Son of the late Matthew Hogarth, and of Marion (McIlwrick) Hogarth of Post Office House, Sanquhar.
Missing in Action on 20 December 1941 and named on the Alamein Memorial, Egypt.
Also named on the Sanquhar School memorial.


FLT/SGT. ADAM B. S. HOWAT, R.A.F.
Adam Black Seaton Howat – age 29 – Flight Sergeant/Air Gunner (979354) 218 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Adam was educated at Sanquhar Public School and was employed as a motor mechanic at the Nithsdale Garage in Sanquhar when he enlisted in 1940. Adam's Stirling bomber had taken off from RAF Downham Market in Norfolk for a raid on Hamburg but the aircraft crashed near Neumunster and Adam died of his injuries in Neumunster hospital. He was buried in the Civic Cemetery but was re-interred in Hamburg in September 1946.
Born 1916 in Sanquhar. Son of Archibald and Annie (Black) Howat of 17 Glendyne Place, Sanquhar.
Died of Wounds on 25 July 1943 and Hamburg Cemetery, Germany.

C.P.O. ALBERT JARDINE, R.N.
Albert Jardine – age 28 – Chief Petty Officer (D/SSX 17848) H.M.S. Lapwing, Royal Navy.
Albert was educated at Sanquhar Public School and had joined the navy in 1936. On 11 March 1945 the sloop “Lapwing” joined to provide close escort for Russian Convoy JW65, with two destroyers and seven corvettes for defence during passage to Kola Inlet in Northern Russia. On the 20 March she was hit amidships by a torpedo fired from the German submarine U968 off the Kola Inlet. The ship broke in two but stern section remained afloat for 20 minutes which enabled some survivors to be rescued. There were 61 survivors, but 158 men died. Albert saved a number of his crewmates and was the last man to be pulled onto his liferaft but he died of exposure and was later buried at sea.
His son Kenneth Albert was born on 29 March, nine days after his death.
Born 1916 in Sanquhar. Son of William Mowbray Jardine and Marie Lena (McIntyre) Jardine of 1 Renwick Place, Sanquhar. Husband of Doris May (Down) Jardine of 10 Park Street, Drake's Circus, Plymouth who he married in 1941 in Sanquhar.
Killed in Action and buried at Sea on 20 March 1945 and named on the Plymouth Naval Memorial, Devon.
Also named on the Sanquhar School memorial.


FLT/SGT. ANDw. JOHNSTONE, R.A.F.
Andrew Johnstone – age 28 – Flight Sergeant/Air Gunner(659129) 50 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Andrew was educated at Sanquhar Public School and was employed by Thomas Gray and Sons, butchers in Sanquhar when he enlisted. Andrew's Lancaster bomber had taken off from RAF Skellingthorpe near Lincoln for a raid on Ladbergen north of Munster but the aircraft crashed at Zelhem near Arnhem.
Born 1916 in New Cumnock, Ayrshire. Son of Thomas and Mary Ann (Graham) of New Cumnock, of Sanquhar and of Crosskirk Cottage, Peebles.
Husband of Elizabeth Mary (Carruthers) Johnstone of 29 Queen's Road, Sanquhar who he married in 1937 in Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 23 September 1944 and buried in Zelhem General Cemetery, Netherlands.
Also named on the Sanquhar School memorial.

PTE. JOHN KIRKHOPE, K.O.S.B.
John Kirkhope – age 37 – Lance Corporal (3184028) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
The 1st KOSB embarked for France in 1939 as part of the British Expeditionary Force. They crossed the Belgian frontier in May 1940, and like the rest of the force, they were then ordered to withdraw. After fighting their way to the coast they were evacuated from the beaches of Dunkirk on the night of 31 May.
Born 1902 in Sanquhar as John Murray Kirkhope. Son of the late Helen (Murray) Kirkhope and of William Dempster Kirkhope of Sanquhar. Husband of Mary Tait (Virtue) Kirkhope of Berwick-on-Tweed who he married in 1938 in Edinburgh.
Missing in Action on 2 June 1940 and named on the Dunkirk Memorial, France.
Also named on the St. Andrew's Church of Scotland, Wallace Green, Berwick-on-Tweed.


SGT. JOHN LOVE, R.A.
John Love – age 28 – Sergeant (1682983) 82 Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Royal Artillery.
John was educated at Sanquhar Public School and was employed on the clerical staff of Bairds and Dalmellington Ltd. in their Sanquhar office. He enlisted in September 1940 and spent over two years with his unit in Gibraltar before they returned to their home county of Essex. John became ill and died in hospital in Chelmsford.
Born 1916 in Sanquhar. Son of Jessie Love and stepson of Hugh Black of 3 Buccleuch Road, Sanquhar. They married in 1921 in Sanquhar.
Died on Active Service on 15 February 1945 and buried in Sanquhar Parish Churchyard Extension. (CWG)

PTE. ANDw. M. McDOWALL, SEAFORTHS

Andrew McRobert McDowall – age 19 – Private (14213345) 2nd Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
Andrew was educated at Sanquhar Public School and served his time as a painter in Sanquhar before he enlisted. He was a keen local football player with Kello Rovers and the team held a minute's silence before the start of their first game of the season in August 1943. The 2nd Seaforths landed on Sicily on 10 July 1943 as part of the 51st (Highland) Division.
Born 1923 in Sanquhar. Son of Robert Welsh McDowall and Maggie Jane (Inglis) McDowall of 44 Renwick Place, Sanquhar.
Killed in Action on 19 July 1943 and buried in Catania War Cemetery, Sicily, Italy.
Also named on the Sanquhar School memorial.

MARINE GEORGE F. McINTOSH, R.M.
George Fleming MacIntosh – age 19 – Marine (PLY/X 106069) H.M.S. Carlisle, Royal Marines.
George was educated at Sanquhar Public School.
The light cruiser “Carlisle” was sailing with the destroyers “Panther” and “Rockwood” in the area south of Piraeus in order to intercept German convoys in the Scarpanto Strait when they came under air-attack from German JU87 dive bombers. The “Carlisle” received four direct hits and 20 of the ship's company were killed and 17 wounded.
Born 1924 in Sanquhar as McIntosh. Son of Alexander and Marion (Fleming) McIntosh of Bridgend, Mennock, Sanquhar.
Killed in Action/Lost at sea on 9 October 1943 and named on the Plymouth Naval Memorial, Devon.
Also named on the Sanquhar School memorial and on the St. Ninian's Church memorial.


S/SGT. ALEXr. C. McMILLAN, GLIDER PILOT REGIMENT.
Alexander Crawford McMillan – age 22 – Staff Sergeant (6296502) The Glider Pilot Regiment, Army Air Corps.
Alexander was educated at Sanquhar Public School and enlisted in the Royal East Kent Regiment (The Buffs) in 1940 when he was 18. Later he was transferred to the Glider Pilot Regiment.
The first of the Horsa gliders landed at Arnhem on the first day of the battle, Sunday 17 September 1944, carrying the 1st Airlanding Brigade to secure the drop zones for the Parachute Regiment. The Glider Pilots fought alongside their Airborne colleagues until 25 September when the survivors were withdrawn to cross back over the Rhine.
Born 1922 in Sanquhar. Son of Archibald and Grace Malcolm (Crawford) McMillan of 19 Queen's Road, Sanquhar.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1944 and named on the Groesbeek Memorial, Gelderland, Netherlands.
Also named on the Sanquhar School memorial.


P/O. W. ELLIOTT STENHOUSE, R.A.F.
William Elliott Stenhouse – age 22 – Pilot Officer/Pilot (145346) 7 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Elliott was educated at Sanquhar Public School and at Wallace Hall Academy in Dumfriesshire before entering the Royal (Dick) Veterinary College in Edinburgh in June 1937. He had passed four years of the course when he enlisted in 1941. He was trained as a pilot in the USA and he was commissioned from Sergeant (1551780) in April 1943. He was injured in August when his Stirling bomber, which had developed a serious engine problem during a raid on Hamburg, crashed on landing at RAF Oakington in Cambridgeshire. Elliott's new aircraft, a Lancaster bomber, had taken off from Oakington for a raid on Hannover but the aircraft crashed at Geest-Munde, Bremerhaven and the crew were buried in Bremen-Walle Cemetery but were re-interred in Becklingen in March 1947.
Born 1921 in Sanquhar. Son of Alexander and Annie Frances (Elliott) Stenhouse of St. Mary Street, Sanquhar.
Killed in Action on 22 September 1943 and buried in Becklingen War Cemetery, Germany.
Also named on the Sanquhar School memorial, on the St. Ninian's Church memorial. and on the Royal (Dick) Veterinary College memorial and Roll of Honour.

Buried in a Commonwealth War Grave in Sanquhar but not named on the War Memorial.

James Hunter – age 20 – Sergeant/Flight Engineer (1568637) 158 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
James's Halifax bomber had taken from RAF Lisset in Yorkshire for a training flight but crashed near Filey. All of the crew, together with two ground-crew “passengers”, were killed.
Born c.1923 in Glasgow. Son of William and Isabella (Stoddart) Hunter of Sanquhar and of 4 Melville Street, Pollokshields, Glasgow who had married in 1919 in Sanquhar.
Died on Service on 14 September 1943 and buried in Sanquhar Parish Churchyard Extension.
Named on the Glasgow Roll of Honour.

PTE. WILLIAM H. MURRAY, PARACHUTE REGT

William Hunter Murray – age 25 – Private (23915792) Parachute Regiment.
Born 8 January 1940 in Sanquhar.
William was killed in a Wessex helicopter crash at Nanga Gaat.
Missing in Action on 12 April 1965 and named on the Terendak Military Cemetery Memorial Wall.

Are there any updates/images yet on the new memorial, please?

The new memorial is WMR 81002- a new report- the old memorial now being lost.

It has a couple of images on, supplied by Ken.
