The whereabouts of the Killicrankie School Roll of Honour is unknown. The school was closed around 1992 and I visited the old building recently which is now converted to a house. The present occupier was, for many years, Headmistress at the school and said that in all her time there she cannot remember seeing the memorial. She said that her husband was an injured WW2 veteran and if the roll had been around it would have been cherished by them all. Enquiries are ongoing but I fear this piece of history has been lost.

PERTHSHIRE ADVERTISER: 20.07.1921

BRAVE SONS OF KILLIECRANKIE
UNVEILING OF SCHOOL ROLL OF HONOUR

Killiecrankie School was closed for the summer vacation of Thursday afternoon, the occasion being marked by the annual distribution of prizes and the unveiling of a beautiful Roll of Honour commemorating the former pupils who served in the Great War in the presence of a gathering of parents and friends.
After prayer by the Rev. J. Lamb, B.D., Tenandry, and interesting programme was sustained by the pupils, including recitations by Jane Stewart, Peggy Smith, and Beatrice Petrie (who gave the test piece for the rendering of which she received a certificate at Perth Music festival). Three songs of a very dainty character were also rendered by the children in unison.
Thereafter Mr T. M’Glashan, M.A., said there had always been a close connection between the church and the school. In Tenandry Church they had a memorial to the men of the parish who had fallen in the Great War and he thought it would be appropriate that they should have in the school a Roll of Honour of those whom they knew had passed through the school and had gone out to take their part in the conflict. He had been so long there, personally, that it was for him to make up the roll, he knew practically every one of the 50 names which were inscribed on it. The roll had been prepared by Mr Douglas Robertson, Dundee, who, although not a Killiecrankie man, might well be called a “second cousin”, on account of his long connection with them. Mr M’Glashan mentioned that other friends, by their contribution,, made it easy for them to have the Roll of Honour there, and said they were indebted to major Foster for having taken the place of the Duchess of Atholl and for his continued interest in the school. Mr M’Glashan gave particulars of the interest former pupils took in the school, especially in the war years, and read the names inscribed on the roll, as follows, of whom the first nine made the supreme sacrifice:-

Mr Foster thanked those present for their attendance which showed the interest they showed in the school. They had also to thank Mr M’Glashan for arranging the Roll of Honour and those friends who had entrusted him. He then unveiled the roll which was covered by a Union Jack, after which a dedicatory prayer was offered by Rev. Mr Lamb, who petitioned that the memory of those names inscribed on the Roll of Honour might ever be cherished and held dear for all time.
Thereafter Mr Foster distributed the school certificates and complimented the boys and girls on the excellent programme they had rendered. He remarked on the increased attendance at the school, and reminded them they were going on holiday and that they would, as they grew older, come to look upon their school days as the happiest of their lives. He hoped they would have a happy holiday.
At the call of Mr M’Glashan, Major Foster was cordially thanked for his generosity in presenting the prizes, which were an encouragement to the pupils throughout the year.
Rev. Mr Lamb proposed a special vote of thanks to Mr Robertson for the fine piece of work he had produced, which was an ornament as well as a memorial.

Have now moved this to the lost memorials section as various enquiries over a period of time have failed to locate it.

Mark

Well even if the Roll of Honour is lost for good at least you have recorded the names here so they are not forgotten.

Regards

Adam

Long shot.

I wonder if there'd be value in contacting Robin Barbour of Glenfincastle, Pitlochry. A former professor of Divinity at Aberdeen, former Moderator of the General Assembly of the Kirk and, as I recall, former officer in the Scottish Horse, his family have lived thereabouts for many years and he may have some local knowledge to share.

I doubt his search included a look on the internet because if he had typed in "Killicrankie School Roll of Honour" in Google the very first link would have pointed him here.

Ah well, hopefully it will bring in a response of some sort.

That article was over 2 years ago so perhaps someone should contact him to see if anything turned up and point him at this forum?
