2nd LIEUT. DAVID W. DINWOODIE, S.R.
David Wallace Dinwoodie – age 23 – Second Lieutenant, 8th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) attached to the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry.
In 1911 the family were at 133 Onslow Drive, Dennistoun in Glasgow.
David was educated at Whitehill School in Dennistoun and at Glasgow High School and was engaged with a firm of chartered accountants in Glasgow when he enlisted as Private (S/12169) in the 5th Cameron Highlanders in September 1914. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in May 1915 but was wounded at Festubert in July. He was commissioned in January 1916 and died at Ronssoy but was re-interred at Templeux in August 1919.
Born 1894 at the Schoolhouse in Kirkmichael where his father was for many years the headmaster. Son of Samuel and Helen Caroline (Dougall) Dinwoodie of St. Clair, Bishopbriggs near Glasgow, of 274 Bath Street, Glasgow and of "Braerig" 16 Lindsay Drive, Kelvindale, Glasgow.
Killed in Action on 19 April 1917 and buried in Templeux-Le-Guerard British Cemetery, Somme, France.
Also named on the Bishopbriggs and District War Memorial, on the Whitehill and Glasgow High School memorials and on the Glasgow Roll of Honour.

George Sinclair Dinwoodie – age 26 – Second Lieutenant, 38th Training Depot Station, Royal Air Force.
In 1911 the family were at 133 Onslow Drive, Dennistoun in Glasgow and George was a drapery salesman. He had been educated at Whitehill School in Dennistoun and was in business in Glasgow when he enlisted as Private (5193) in the 1/9th (Glasgow Highland) Battalion of the Highland Light Infantry. He went to France in April 1916 and, as Private (332220), he was wounded at Transloy in November and at St. Vast in December after which he was evacuated to hospital in Stockport near Manchester. He was commissioned in the 7th HLI in August 1917 and at some point after April 1918 he joined the newly formed Royal Air Force. He was in training at Tadcaster when he crashed and he died in the Military Hospital in York. Born 1894 at the Schoolhouse in Kirkmichael where his father was for many years the headmaster. Son of Samuel and Helen Caroline (Dougall) Dinwoodie of St. Clair, Bishopbriggs near Glasgow, of 274 Bath Street, Glasgow and of "Braerig" 16 Lindsay Drive, Kelvindale, Glasgow.
Died on Service on 29 August 1918 and buried in Glasgow (Riddrie Park) Cemetery. (CWG)

PTE. THOMAS DRYSDALE, CAN.
Thomas Drysdale – age 30 – Private (829715) 2nd Battalion, Canadian Machine Gun Corps.
Thomas emigrated to Canada in about 1912 and was working on a farm in Manitoba when he enlisted in Winnipeg in December 1915. He sailed for England in September 1916 and joined the 14th Machine Gun Company in France in April 1917. He was wounded and treated at the 24th General Hospital at Etaples in November 1917. When he recovered, Thomas was posted to the 2nd CMGC in March 1918.
Born 1888 in Twynholm, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Malcolm and Elizabeth or Lizzie (Marley) Drysdale of Willowfield, Netherfield, Kirkmichael.
Killed in Action on 28 August 1918 and buried in Sun Quarry Cemetery, Cherisy, France.


PTE. JOHN GALLOWAY, AUS.
John Galloway – age 31 – Private (775) 13th Battalion, Australian Infantry.
John was working as a rabbit trapper at Narrabri in New South Wales when he enlisted in November 1915. He sailed from Sydney in May 1916.
Born 1886 in Llanllechid, Bangor, Caernarvonshire, North Wales.
Son of John (a gamekeeper) and Flora Martha (Gumbleton) Galloway of The Corses, Kirkmichael and of South Cowshaw Cottages, Tinwald, Dumfriesshire.
Missing in Action on 11 April 1917 and named on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, Somme, France.


PTE. JOSEPH GREEN, K.O.S.B.
Joseph Green – age 40 – Private (241677) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Joseph was employed at Over Courance, Kirkmichael when he enlisted as Private (5439) in August 1916. He joined his battalion in Egypt and served in Palestine before he moved with his battalion to France in April 1918. He was wounded in October and died three days later in the 38th Casualty Clearing Station at Boisleux-St. Marc.
Born 1878 in Lochmaben, Dumfriesshire as Joseph Tweedie Green. Son of the late James and Elizabeth (Tweedie) Green. Husband of Sarah (Carmichael) Green of Burnrigg, Courance, Kirkmichael who he married in 1899 in Lochmaben.
Died of Wounds on 8 October 1918 and buried in Sunken Road Cemetery, France.

PTE. WILLIAM HALLIDAY, G.H.
William Halliday – age 19 – Private (S/19789) 1/7th Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
William was brought up by his grandparents Robert and Margaret Halliday and in 1911, aged 12, he was with them at Mount Stewart, Kirkmichael.
Born 1899 at Bankhead Cottage, Kirkmahoe, Dumfrieshhire. Son of Agnes Halliday and grandson of Robert and Margaret Halliday of Midtown, Kirkmichael.
Missing in Action on 14 April 1918 and named on the Ploegsteert Memoria, Belgium.


PTE. JOHN HOPE, K.O.S.B.
John Hope, Military Medal – age 25 – Private (23679) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was brought up by grandparents John and Mary at Bogg in Sanquhar, Dumfriesshire and was a ploughman, aged 21, when he married in 1912. He had enlisted in the 7th/8th KOSB before being posted to the 1st Battalion. He was a stretcher-bearer and was awarded a M.M. for his actions in recovering wounded on 23 April 1917. He was doing the same task when he was hit by a shell.
Born 1892 in Crawford, Lanarkshire. Son of Elizabeth (Hope) Watson who married James Watson in 1894 in Kells, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Husband of Agnes Jane (Johnston) Hope of Glencorse Cottage, Kirkmichael who he married in 1912 in Dryfesdale. (from 1918, Mrs John Gibson of Garrel Hill Cottage, Courance, Kirkmichael)
Missing in Action on 16 August 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.


PTE. ARCHIE JOHNSTONE, R.I.F.
Archibald Johnstone – age 23 – Private (14371) 9th Battalion (County Armagh) Princess Victoria's Royal Irish Fusiliers.
Archibald was painter to trade and had served his apprenticeship in Killylea, Co. Armagh. He landed with his battalion at Le Havre in October 1915. He was wounded on 1 July 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme, and died in the 11th Stationary Hospital in Rouen.
Born 1893 in Kirkmichael. Son of the late James Johnstone of Garrel Smithy, Kirkmichael and of Bessie Johnstone of 1 High Street, Ecclefechan.
Died of Wounds on 16 July 1916 and buried in St. Sever Cemetery, Rouen, France.
Also named on the Hoddom Parish War Memorial in Ecclefechan.

CPL. PETER JOHNSTONE, CAN.
Peter Johnstone – age 30 – Lance Corporal (28929) 16th (Scottish) Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
Peter was a Fire Warden and a member of the Legion of Frontiersmen in British Columbia when he enlisted in the 72nd Regiment, The Seaforth Highlanders of Canada, in Vancouver. Men from this Regiment were transferred to the 16th Battalion, in September 1914 at Valcartier Quebec.
Born 1885 in Kirkmichael. Son of the late Maxwell Johnstone of Stidriggs, Kirkmichael and of Jane (Charteris) Johnstone of 5 Braehead Terrace, Rosemount Street, Maxwelltown, Kirkcudbrightshire and later of Seaforth, Chapel Street, Moniaive, Dumfriesshire.
Killed in Action on 22 April 1915 and buried in New Irish Farm Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Maxwelltown Burgh and Troqueer Parish War Memorial in Dumfries and on the Troqueer Parish Church Memorial.


PTE. JOHN KIRKPATRICK, R.S.
John Kirkpatrick – age 28 – Private (40288) 12th Battalion, Royal Scots.
John was engaged in farm work when he enlisted in September 1916. He was posted as Private (25137) to the 7th/8th King's Own Scottish Borderers in France but was transferred to the Royal Scots in December 1916. John was badly wounded and died in the 26th General Hospital in Etaples.
Born 1887 in Kirkmichael as John James. Son of William and Mary Kirkpatrick of Gillrigg Cottage, Kirkmichael.
Died of Wounds on 25 April 1917 and buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, France.


PTE. FRANK LAMONT, A.S.C.
Francis William Lamont – age 30 – Private (M2/046804) Army Service Corps.
Frank was a chauffeur in Edinburgh when he married. He landed in Egypt in April 1915 but died of pneumonia.
Born 1888 in Kirkinner, Wigtownshire. Son of James and Isabella (Moon) Lamont, of The Kennels, Kirkmichael. Husband of Jeannie (Cameron) Lamont of 3 St. David's Place, Morrison Street, Edinburgh who he married in 1907 in Morningside, Edinburgh.
Died on Service on 24 November 1918 and buried in Alexandria (Hadra) War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.

George Little – age 22 – Private (28284) 11th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
George had enlisted as Private (2281) in the Lanarkshire Yeomanry in 1914. He joined his battalion in Salonica in Northern Greece after they had arrived there in November 1915.
Born 1895 in Kirkmichael. Son of David and Agnes (Robison) Little of Pleasance, Kirkmichael.
Missing in Action on 5 May 1917 and named on the Doiran Memorial, Greece.


PTE. JAMES McCULLOCH, K.O.S.B.
James McCulloch – age 26 – Private (201831) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
In 1911 James Jardine or McCulloch, aged 19 was a cattleman living with his mother Isabella at Townhead Cottages, Kirkmichael. He joined his battalion in Egypt and served in Palestine.
Born 1891 in Kirkmahoe, Dumfriesshire as James Jardine. Son of Isabella Jane (Jardine) McCulloch and step-son of the late Peter McCulloch who had married in 1900 in Holywood, Dumfriesshire.
Killed in Action on 30 October 1917 and buried in Jerusalem War Cemetery, Israel.


PTE. KENNETH McGREGOR, K.O.S.B.
Kenneth Grierson MacGregor – age 37 – Private (241593) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Kenneth was a gardener at Courance, Kirkmichael when he enlisted as Private (5296) in the 5th KOSB. He joined his battalion in Egypt and served in Palestine before moving with them to France in April 1918.
Born 1881 in Dumfries as McGregor. Son of the late James and Janet (Grierson) McGregor of Gilloch, Greogetown Road, Dumfries. Husband of Margaret Campbell (Reid) McGregor of Alton Head, Kilmaurs, Ayrshire who he married in 1900 in Dreghorn Ayrshire.
Died of Wounds on 18 June 1918 and buried in Ligny-St. Flochel British Cemetery, Averdoingt, France.

GUNNR. JAMES McNEISH, M.G.C.
James McNeish – age 23 – Private (5025) Machine Gun Corps.
James was in farm service when he enlisted as Private (6864) in the 11th (Reserve) Battalion of the Black Watch in 1914. He transferred to the MGC but was wounded in March 1917 and had been evacuated to the Military Hospital at Alnwick, Northumberland where he contracted pneumonia and died.
Born 1895 in Torthorwald, Dumfriesshire as James Douglas Broadfoot McNeish. His birth was also registered in Kirkmichael. Son of the late Jane (Cairney) McNeish and of George Little McNeish of Parkgate, Kirkmichael.
Died on Service on 29 October 1918 and buried in Kirkmichael Parish Churchyard. (CWG)


PTE. JOHN OLIPHANT, A.&S.H.
John Oliphant – age 21 – Private (40662) 1/8th (Argyllshire) Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
John was an under-gamekeeper with Brigadier General Allan Burns of Cumbernauld in East Dunbartonshire when he enlisted as Private (3124) in the 1/9th (Dunbartonshire) A&SH in November 1914. He served with the 10th Battalion before he was transferred to the 1/8th A&SH. He was wounded in April 1917 and was killed five months later.
Born 1895 in Aberdalgie, Perthshire. Son of John and Grace (Forbes) Oliphant of Milngate, Kirkmichael and of Cairnpark, Thornhill, Dumfriesshire.
Missing in Action on 20 September 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.


L/CPL. JOHN SMITH, W.Y. RGT.
John Smith – age 33 – Private (57198) 2/5th Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own)
John had served his apprenticeship at the British Linen Bank in Moffat and was second cashier at the Barclay's Bank in Middlesborough when he enlisted.
Born 1884 in Kirkmichael. Son of John and Janet (Gracie) Smith of Dumgree Schoolhouse, Kirkpatrick Juxta and of Newfield Bank, Moffat.
Husband of Maria (Leibfried) Smith who he married in 1913 in Teesdale, County Durham.
Died of Wounds on 13 April 1918 and buried in Gezaincourt Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France.
Also named on the Moffat War Memorial

James Burgess Bell – age 31 – Private (1719884) 5th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
James was employed at Heathhall in Dumfries when he enlisted. His battalion had crossed the Rhine near Rees when James was killed at the village of Esserden. He was buried there but was re-interred at Reichswald in September 1946.
Born 1913 in Kirkmichael. Son of John and Janet (Burgess) Bell of Nethermill, Parkgate, Kirkmichael. Husband of Barbara Turner (Edgar or McVittie) Bell of Meikleholm Cottage Courance, Kirkmichael who he married in 1940 in Kirkmichael.
Killed in Acrtion between 23 and 24 March 1945 and buried in Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Germany.


SERG. RODERICK CAMPBELL, R.A.F.V.R.
Roderick Campbell – age 19? – Sergeant/Air Gunner (1820283) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Roderick's Lancaster bomber from 1654 Heavy Conversion Unit, RAF Wigsley, near Lincoln, was on a night exercise practice bombing when it was attacked by a German Ju88 night-fighter and crashed at Sookholme, near Mansfield in Nottinghamshire.
Born 1928 in Kirkconnel, Dumfriesshire. (So age is 17+)
Son of Hugh and Janet Campbell of Lambholm Cottages, Parkgate, Dumfriesshire.
Killed by enemy action on 4 March 1945 and buried in Gamerig Cemetery, Kirkmichael.
Also named on the Royal Four Towns War Memorial in Hightae, Dumfriesshire.


AC1 J. J. DOUGLAS, R.A.F.
John James Douglas – age 22 – Aircraftman 1st Class (1562716) 2744 Squadron, RAF Regiment, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
John worked at Newtonairds Home Farm, Holywood when he enlisted. 2744 Squadron arrived in Italy in December 1943, initially based in the Naples area. Although their primary role was airfield defence, they later operated alongside Army units as infantry support at Monte Cassino on the Gothic Line. John was buried in a battlefield grave but was re-interred in Assisi in August 1946.
Born 1922 in Kirkconnel, Dumfriesshire as John James Lori.....Son of Mr. & Mrs. Douglas of Craigshields, Parkgate, Kirkmichael.
Killed in Action on 30 June 1944 and buried in Assisi War Cemetery, Italy.
Also named on the Closeburn Parish War Memorial and on the Holywood Parish WW2 memorial.

P/O G. H. HANNAN, R.A.F.V.R.
George Henry Hannan – age 30 – Pilot Officer/Air Gunner (79237) 236 Squadron, Coastal Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Harry was a member of the Dumfries county clerk’s staff before joining the Forces. An amateur footballer with Nithside Juveniles, he was also an assistant secretary for South-East Scotland in connection with the Government’s physical training and recreation scheme. He was commissioned as a Pilot Officer in May 1940 and fought with his squadron during the Battle of Britain as a Coastal Command squadron, where it was used for a mix of reconnaissance and long range fighter duties. Harry's Bristol Blenheim had taken of from RAF St. Eval in Cornwall for a reconnaisance sortie to Brest but it failed to return and it was not until early 1944 that a Frenchman, who had reached England, reported that the aircraft had been shot down near his village. The three crewmen were buried in Plouguin, Finistere, north of Brest, and were re-interred in Bayeux in July 1948.
Born 1910 in Terregles, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Henry Beattie Hannan and of Jean (Macmillan) Hannah of Kirkmichael and of 80 High Street, Sanquhar, Dumfriesshire.
Killed in Action on 21 December 1940 and buried in Bayeux War Cemetery, Calvados, France.


FUS. ADAM McFADZEAN, R.S.F.
Adam McFadzean – age 35 – Fusilier (3127436) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
Adam had been a quarry worker and had been a prisoner of war in Germany. He died of tuberculosis at his home in Ecclefechan.
Born December 1910 at Millpool in Kirkpatrick Durham, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Son of John and Mary (Johnstone) McFadzean of Auchenskew, Courance, Kirkmichael. Husband of Mary Roddick (Quirk) McFadzean, of Ecclefechan, Dumfriesshire who he married in 1939 in Kirkpatrick Juxta, Dumfriesshire.
Died on 18 December 1944 and buried in Hoddom New Parish Churchyard in Ecclefechan.


PTE. ALEX. F. T. McNEISH, R.A.S.C.
Alexander Fraser Taylor McNeish – age 34 – Driver (T/14780583) Royal Army Service Corps.
Born 1910 in Kirkmichael as Alexander Fraser Taylor. Son of Margaret Jane (Taylor) McNeish of Parkgate, Kirkmichael and step-son of George Little McNeish who had married in 1912 in Kirkmichael. Husband of Margaret (Polland) McNeish of The Cottage, Newbridge, Dumfries who he married in 1940 in Kirkmichael.
Died on Active Service on 20 May 1945 and buried in Fayid War Cemetery, Egypt.
Also listed on the Terregles Parish War Memorial in Kirkcudbrightshire.
George's son from his first marriage, James McNeish – age 23 – Private (5025) Machine Gun Corps, died on 29 October 1918 and is buried in Kirkmichael Churchyard. (see above)

PTE. JOHN MUIRHEAD, K.O.S.B.
John Muirhead – age 23 – Private (3188119) 5th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John had been a farm worker at Parkgate, Kirkmichael when he enlisted. He was one of six men of 5th KOSB who were killed when a mine they were guarding on the beach between Dunbar and North Berwick in East Lothian exploded. John died in the Vert Memorial Hospital in Haddington, East Lothian.
Born 1918 in Kirkgunzeon, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Elizabeth Muirhead, later Mrs. John Robertson. They married in 1932 at Auchencairn, Rerrick, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Died of Wounds on 21 April 1941 and buried in Gamerig Cemetery, Kirkmichael. (CWG)
The CWGC register shows him to be the son of Rebecca Muirhead, of Carswadda, Lockenhead.(sic)
This was actually his aunt, Rebecca Bowman Muirhead, born 1891 in Kirkmichael, who lived at Carswadda, Lochanhead, Lochrutton, Kirkcudbrightshire and who was a resident of Lochfoot Village, Lochrutton when she died in Dumfries Infirmary on 24 April 1944. I assume Rebecca raised John as her son and they are buried together in Gamerig Cemetery.


P/O JAS. L. SHIELLS, D.F.M. R.A.F.V.R.
James Lauder Shiells, Distinguished Flying Medal – age 31 – Pilot Officer/Pilot (143451) 15 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
James was commissioned from Flight Sergeant (1052462) in March 1943 and was awarded a DFM as “1052462 James Lauder SHIELLS (later Pilot Officer), R.A.F.V.R., 15 Sqn., with effect from 15th April, 1943 (since deceased)”.
His Stirling bomber had taken off from RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk for a raid on Mannheim but the aircraft crashed at St-Erme-Soutre-et-Ramecourt, north of Reims.
Born 1911 in Annan, Dumfriesshire. Son of James Alexander Shiells and Agnes Robson Butler (Lauder) Shiells of The Barony Lodge, Parkgate, Kirkmichael and of The Bungalow, Bemersyde, St. Boswells, Melrose, Roxburghshire. Husband of “Reta” Margaret Elizabeth (Bradshaw) Shiells (Third Officer W.R.N.S.) of 9 Lauderdale Street, Edinburgh who he married in 1942 in Edinburgh.
Killed in Action on 16 April 1943 and buried in St. Erme Communal Cemetery Extension, Aisne, France.
